Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles Confined in Doped Mesoporous Carbons: A Strategy to Produce Catalysts for Imine Synthesis

A group of (doped N or P) carbons were synthesized using soluble starch as a carbon precursor. Further, ceria nanoparticles (NPs) were confined into these (doped) carbon materials. The obtained solids were characterized by various techniques such as N2 physisorption, XRD, TEM, SEM, XPS, and XAS. These materials were used as catalysts for the oxidative coupling between benzyl alcohol and aniline as the model reaction. Ceria immobilized on mesoporous-doped carbon shows higher activity than the other materials, benchmark catalysts, and most of the previously reported catalysts. The control of the ceria NP size, the presence of Ce3+ cations, and an increment in the disorder in the ceria NP structure caused by a support-ceria interaction could increase the number of oxygen vacancies and improve its catalytic performance. CN-meso/CeO2 was also used as the catalyst for a rich scope of substrates, such as substituted aromatic alcohols, linear alcohols, and different types of amines. The influence of various reaction parameters (substrate content, reaction temperature, and catalyst content) on the activity of this catalyst was also checked.

Silver nanomaterials: synthesis and (electro/photo) catalytic applications

In view of their unique characteristics and properties, silver nanomaterials (Ag NMs) have been used not only in the field of nanomedicine but also for diverse advanced catalytic technologies. In this comprehensive review, light is shed on general synthetic approaches encompassing chemical reduction, sonochemical, microwave, and thermal treatment among the preparative methods for the syntheses of Ag-based NMs and their catalytic applications. Additionally, some of the latest innovative approaches such as continuous flow integrated with MW and other benign approaches have been emphasized that ultimately pave the way for sustainability. Moreover, the potential applications of emerging Ag NMs, including sub nanomaterials and single atoms, in the field of liquid-phase catalysis, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis as well as a positive role of Ag NMs in catalytic reactions are meticulously summarized. The scientific interest in the synthesis and applications of Ag NMs lies in the integrated benefits of their catalytic activity, selectivity, stability, and recovery. Therefore, the rise and journey of Ag NM-based catalysts will inspire a new generation of chemists to tailor and design robust catalysts that can effectively tackle major environmental challenges and help to replace noble metals in advanced catalytic applications. This overview concludes by providing future perspectives on the research into Ag NMs in the arena of electrocatalysis and photocatalysis.

Cyclometalated Half-Sandwich Iridium(III) Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, and Diverse Catalytic Activity in Imine Synthesis Using Air as the Oxidant

Four air-stable cyclometalated half-sandwich iridium complexes 1-4 with C,N-donor Schiff base ligands were prepared through C-H activation in moderate-to-good yields. These complexes have been well characterized, and their exact structure was elaborated on by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The iridium(III) complexes 1-4 showed good catalytic activity in the imine synthesis under open-flask conditions (air as the oxidant) from primary amine oxidative homocoupling, secondary amine dehydrogenation, and the cross-coupling reaction of amine and alcohol. Substituents bonded on the ligands of the iridium complexes displayed little effect on the catalytic efficiency. The stability and good catalytic efficiency of the iridium catalysts, mild reaction conditions, and substrate universality showed their potential application in industrial production.

Facile SILAR approach to air-stable naked silver and gold nanoparticles supported by alumina

A synthetically convenient and scalable SILAR (successive ion layer adsorption and reaction) method is used to make air-stable films of silver and gold nanoparticles supported on alumina scaffolds. This solution-based deposition technique yields particles devoid of insulating capping agents or ligands. The optical properties of the nanoparticle films were investigated using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. A linear absorption arising from intraband excitation (775 nm laser pulse) is seen only for Au nanoparticles at low intensity. However, both Au and Ag particles exhibit plasmon resonance responses at high excitation intensity via two photon absorption of the 775 nm pump pulse. The difference in optical response to near-IR laser excitation is rationalized based on the known density of states for each metal. To demonstrate the potential applications of these films, alumina-supported Ag nanoparticles were utilized as substrates for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, resulting in a 65-fold enhancement in the Raman signal of the probe molecule rhodamine 6G. The exceptional stability and scalability of these SILAR films opens the door for further optical and photocatalytic studies and applications, particularly with ligand-free Ag nanoparticles that typically oxidize under ambient conditions. Additionally, isolating plasmonic and interband electronic excitations in stable AgNP under visible light irradiation could enable elucidation of the mechanisms that drive noble metal-assisted photocatalytic processes.
