In situ coupling of carbon dots with zeolitic imidazolate frameworks enabling highly red emission in solid state

In this work, an extraordinary solid red emissive phosphor was prepared based on red-emitting carbon dots (R-CDs). The synthesis was conducted under an in-situ strategy, with assistance of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks. The obtained phosphor possesses a stronger red emission located at 630 nm in solid state, with CIE coordinate of (0.63, 0.35) and quantum yield of ∼ 45 %. As a consequence, not only aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching of R-CDs is avoided in solid state, but also an enhanced emission with high quantum yield is presented. Fluorescence properties were further explored in detail. The emission is found to be responsive to temperature and applied pressure. Based on the excellent emissive performance, the material has great potentials in anti-counterfeiting, latent fingerprint imaging, and temperature/pressure-sensing. This work provides a facile and promising way of preparing solid carbon-based phosphors for special applications.

A family of CuI-based 1D polymers showing colorful short-lived TADF and phosphorescence induced by photo- and X-ray irradiation

Exploiting 2-(alkylsulfonyl)pyridines as 1,3-N,S-ligands, herein we have constructed 1D CuI-based coordination polymers (CPs) bearing unprecedented (CuI)_n chains and possessing remarkable photophysical properties. At room temperature, these CPs show efficient TADF, phosphorescence or dual emission in the deep-blue to red range with outstandingly short decay times of 0.4-2.0 μs and good quantum performance. Owing to great structural diversity, the CPs demonstrate a variety of emissive mechanisms, spanning from TADF of ¹(M + X)LCT type to ³CC and ³(M + X)LCT phosphorescence. Moreover, the designed compounds emit strong X-ray radioluminescence with the quantum efficiency of up to an impressive 55% relative to all-inorganic BGO scintillators. The presented findings push the boundaries in designing TADF and triplet emitters with very short decay times.

TADF and X-ray Radioluminescence of New Cu(I) Halide Complexes: Different Halide Effects on These Processes

A series of complexes [Cu2X2(Pic3PO)2] (X = Cl, Br, I) based on tris(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)phosphine oxide (Pic3PO) has been synthesized. At 298 K, these compounds exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) of 1(M+X)LCT type with λmax varying from 485 to 545 nm, and quantum efficiency up to 54%. In the TADF process, the halide effect appears as the emission intensification and bathochromic shift of λmax in the following order X = I < Br < Cl. Upon X-ray irradiation, the title compounds emit radioluminescence, the emission bands of which have the same shape as those at TADF, thereby meaning a similar radiative excited state. By contrast to TADF, the halide effect in the radioluminescence is reversed: its intensity grows in the order X = Cl < Br < I, since heavier atoms absorb X-rays more efficiently. These findings essentially contribute to our knowledge about the halide effect in the photo- and radioluminescent Cu(I) halide emitters.

Green Emissive Copper(I) Coordination Polymer Supported by the Diethylpyridylphosphine Ligand as a Luminescent Sensor for Overheating Processes

Tertiary diethylpyridylphosphine was synthesized by the reaction of pyridylphosphine with bromoethane in a suberbasic medium. The reaction of phosphine with the copper(I) iodide led to the formation of a copper(I) coordination polymer, which, according to the X-ray diffraction data, has an intermediate structure with a copper-halide core between the octahedral and stairstep geometries of the Cu₄I₄ clusters. The obtained coordination polymer exhibits a green emission in the solid state, which is caused by the ³(M+X)LCT transitions. The heating up of the copper(I) coordination polymer to 138.5 °C results in its monomerization and the formation of a new solid-state phase. The new phase exhibits a red emission, with the emission band maximum at 725 nm. According to the experimental data and quantum chemical computations, it was concluded that depolymerization probably leads to a complex that is formed with the octahedral structure of the copper-halide core. The resulting solid-state phase can be backward-converted to the polymer phase via recrystallization from the acetone or DMF. Therefore, the obtained coordination polymer can be considered a sensor or detector for the overheating of processes that should be maintained at temperatures below 138 °C (e.g., engines, boiling liquids, solar heat systems, etc.).

Tris(2-Pyridyl)Arsine as a New Platform for Design of Luminescent Cu(I) and Ag(I) Complexes

The coordination behavior of tris(2-pyridyl)arsine (Py₃As) has been studied for the first time on the example of the reactions with CuI, CuBr and AgClO₄. When treated with CuI in CH₂Cl₂ medium, Py₃As unexpectedly affords the scorpionate complex [Cu(Py₃As)I]∙CH₂Cl₂ only, while this reaction in MeCN selectively leads to the dimer [Cu₂(Py₃As)₂I₂]. At the same time, the interaction of CuBr with Py₃As exclusively gives the dimer [Cu₂(Py₃As)₂Br₂]. It is interesting to note that the scorpionate [Cu(Py₃As)I]∙CH₂Cl₂, upon fuming with a MeCN vapor (r.t., 1 h), undergoes quantitative dimerization into the dimer [Cu₂(Py₃As)₂I₂]. The reaction of Py₃As with AgClO₄ produces complex [Ag@Ag₄(Py₃As)₄](CIO₄)₅ featuring a Ag-centered Ag₄ tetrahedral kernel. At ambient temperature, the obtained Cu(I) complexes exhibit an unusually short-lived photoluminescence, which can be tentatively assigned to the thermally activated delayed fluorescence of (M + X) LCT type (M = Cu, L = Py₃As; X = halogen). For the title Ag(I) complexes, QTAIM calculations reveal the pronounced argentophilic interactions for all short Ag∙∙∙Ag contacts (3.209–3.313 Å).

Pyridylarsine-based Cu(I) complexes showing TADF mixed with fast phosphorescence: a speeding-up emission rate using arsine ligands

Can arsine ligands be preferred over similar phosphines to design Cu(I)-based TADF materials? The present study reveals that arsines can indeed be superior to reach shorter decay times of Cu(I) emitters. This has been exemplified on a series of bis(2-pyridyl)phenylarsine-based complexes [Cu₂(Py₂AsPh)₂X₂] (X = Cl, Br, and I), the emission decay times of which are significantly shorter (2-9 μs at 300 K) than those of their phosphine analogs [Cu₂(Py₂PPh)₂X₂] (5-33 μs). This effect is caused by two factors: (i) large ΔE(S₁-T₁) gaps of the arsine complexes (1100-1345 cm^-1), thereby phosphorescence is admixed with TADF at 300 K, thus reducing the total emission decay time compared to the TADF-only process by 5-28%; (ii) higher SOC strength of arsenic (ζ_l = 1202 cm^-1) against phosphorus (ζ_l = 230 cm^-1) makes the k_r(T₁ → S₀) rate of the Cu(I)-arsine complexes by 1.3 to 4.2 times faster than that of their phosphine analogs. It is also noteworthy that the TADF/phosphorescence ratio for [Cu₂(Py₂AsPh)₂X₂] at 300 K is halogen-regulated and varies in the order: Cl (1 : 1) < Br (3 : 1) ≈ I (3.5 : 1). These findings provide a new insight into the future design of dual-mode (TADF + phosphorescence) emissive materials with reduced lifetimes.

Coordination-induced emission enhancement in copper(I) iodide coordination polymers supported by 2-(alkylsulfanyl)pyrimidines

First examples of copper(i) complexes with 2-(alkylsulfanyl)pyrimidine ligands have been synthesized. Reactions of copper(i) iodide with 2-(methylsulfanyl)pyrimidine (L1) in various metal-to-ligand molar ratios in MeCN afford a ladder-type coordination polymer [Cu2L1I2]n with polymeric chains built from double-stranded (Cu2I2)n ribbons supported on both sides by μ2-N,S-L1 molecules. Although the second ligand, 2-(ethylsulfanyl)pyrimidine (L2), differs from L1 only by a methylene group, its reactions with copper(i) iodide in MeCN yield not only a congenerous coordination polymer, [Cu2L2I2]n, but also [CuL2I]n, in which a similar (Cu2I2)n ribbon is decorated by N-monodentate L2 molecules. Absorption spectra of all compounds represent an interplay of metal + iodine-to-ligand charge transfer (XMLCT) and ligand-centered (LC) and cluster-centered (CC) transitions, while the emission occurs from the excited states of XMLCT nature. The luminescence of [Cu2L1I2]n and [Cu2L2I2]n is blue-shifted and greatly enhanced in comparison with that of [CuL2I]n (quantum yields: 89% and 68% for [Cu2L1I2]n and [Cu2L2I2]nvs. 23% for [CuL2I]n at 77 K), which can be associated with a more rigid μ2-N,S coordination of 2-(alkylsulfanyl)pyrimidine ligands in [Cu2L1I2]n and [Cu2L2I2]n leading to a less distorted T1 state.

Effects of transition metal cations and temperature on the luminescence of a 3-cyano-4-dicyanomethylene-5-oxo-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrole-2-olate anion

The luminescence intensity of a 3-cyano-4-dicyanomethylene-5-oxo-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrol-2-olate anion (HA−) drops to zero upon complexation with transition metal cations, and reversibly drops by 6–7 times upon heating from 27 up to 123 °C.

Dicopper(I) Paddle-Wheel Complexes with Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Adjusted by Ancillary Ligands

A suite of paddle-wheel shaped [Cu₂(PymPPh₂)₃(L_an)_n](PF₆)₂ complexes showing efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) has been synthesized. In these complexes, Cu(I) ions are P,N-bridged by three diphenyl(2-pyrimidyl)phosphine (PymPPh₂, L) ligands in a "head-to-tail" fashion, and one or both metals are also capped by the ancillary ligand (L_an = MeOH, Me₂CO, MeCN, PhCN). At ambient temperature, the solid complexes emit TADF with the quantum yield of up to 85% and the lifetimes of from 9.6 to 27 μs. The ancillary ligands, whose orbitals negligibly contribute to the radiative ¹(M + L + L_an)LCT state, remarkably adjust emission energies and ΔE(S₁-T₁) energy splitting magnitudes of the emitters obtained. Thus, depending on structure and/or number of the L_an molecules, the emission maxima vary from 500 to 563 nm, and the ΔE(S₁-T₁) gaps range 550-1100 cm^-1. Such tunable TADF characteristics coupled with the excellent solubility and air-stability make the complexes presented to be promising TADF materials.

Copper(i) halide polymers derived from tris[2-(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl]phosphine: halogen-tunable colorful luminescence spanning from deep blue to green

A series of isostructural 1D coordination polymers bearing stair-step [Cu₄X₄] modules is reported. At ambient temperature, they feature bright halogen-modulated colorful luminescence spanning from deep blue to green.

Copper(i)-polymers and their photoluminescence thermochromism properties

Under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions, four organic bidentate bridging N,N'-donor ligands 1,3-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)propane (L1), 4,4'-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-1,1'-biphenyl (L2), 1,2-bis(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (L3) and 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinoxaline (L4) were employed to react with CuBr/CuI, generating four 2-D layered copper(i)-polymer coordination polymer materials [Cu2Br2(L1)] 1, [CuI(L2)] 2, [CuI(L3)] 3 and [CuI(L4)0.5] 4. In 1-4, different Cu-X motifs are found: a cubic Cu4Br4 core in 1; a castellated Cu-I single chain in 2; a rhombic Cu2I2 core in 3; and a staircase-like Cu-I double chain in 4. The 2-D layer networks of 1-3 can all be simplified into a simple 44 topology (planar for 1 and 3; wave-like for 2), while the 2-D layer network of 4 has a 63 topology. The photoluminescence behaviors of 1-4 under a UV lamp suggest that 1 and 2 possess fluorescence thermochromism properties. Under the UV lamp, with the decrease in temperature, (i) 1 exhibits a yellow-to-red emission; (ii) 2 exhibits a yellow-to-green emission; (iii) 3 always emits green light; and (iv) 4 never emits light. These are further confirmed by their emission spectra. From 297 K to 77 K, the emission of 1 exhibits a large red shift from 561 nm to 623 nm; the emission of 2 exhibits a large blue shift from 571 nm to 515 nm; only a minor red shift is observed for the emission of 3; and no peaks appear in the emission spectra of 4. The crystal data of 1 and 2 at different temperatures have been collected for revealing the origination of their fluorescence thermochromism properties. Based on the above investigations, the effect of the rigidity/flexibility of the organic ligand on the fluorescence thermochromism properties of copper(i)-polymer coordination polymer materials is discussed. The quantum yields at 297 K and the photoluminescence lifetimes at 297 K and 77 K for 1-3 were also measured for better understanding their photoluminescence properties.

Temperature- and excitation wavelength-dependent emission in a manganese(ii) complex

A mononuclear manganese(ii) complex with a chelating 4-(3,5-diphenyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-6-(piperidin-1-yl)pyrimidine ligand (L), [MnL₂Cl₂]·H₂O, shows intriguing excitation wavelength-dependent emission. Depending on the excitation wavelength, the complex demonstrates three emission bands with the maxima at 380 nm, 440 nm and 495 nm. The 380 nm and 440 nm emissions originate from the π → π* and n → π* ligand-centered transitions. The long-wave 495 nm emission with microsecond lifetimes is related to the d-d transitions and/or metal-to-ligand and halogen-to-ligand charge transfer. The emission behavior of this complex is strongly temperature-dependent: upon cooling from 300 K down to 77 K, the intensity of emission considerably increases. The enhancement of the luminescence upon cooling is accompanied by the appearance of the vibrational structure. This complex is the first example of manganese(ii) complexes demonstrating excitation wavelength-dependent emission.

Copper and Gold Cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)carbene Complexes with Sub-Microsecond Photoemissions: Structure and Substituent Effects on Redox and Luminescent Properties

Copper and gold halide and pseudo-halide complexes stabilised by methyl-, ethyl- and adamantyl-substituted cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) ligands are mostly linear monomers in the solid state, without aurophilic Au⋅⋅⋅Au interactions. (^Et2 L)CuCl shows the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in the series, 70 %. The photoemissions of ^Me2 L and ^Et2 L copper halide complexes show S₁ →S₀ fluorescence on the ns time scale, in agreement with theory, as well as a long-lived emission. Monomeric (^Me2 L)CuNCS is a white emitter, whereas dimeric [(^Et2 L)Cu(μ-NCS)]₂ shows intense yellow emission with a photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of 49 %. The reaction of (^Ad L)MCl (M=Cu or Au) with phenols ArOH (Ar=Ph, 2,6-F₂ C₆ H₃ , 2,6-Me₂ C₆ H₃ , 3,5-tBu₂ C₆ H₃ , 2-tBu-5-MeC₆ H₃ , 2-pyridyl), thiophenol, or aromatic amines H₂ NAr'' (Ar'=Ph, 3,5-(CF₃ )₂ C₆ H₃ , C₆ F₅ , 2-py) afforded the corresponding phenolato, thiophenolato and amido complexes. Although the emission wavelengths are only marginally affected by the ring substitution pattern, the PL intensities respond sensitively to the presence of substituents in the ortho or meta positions. In gold aryloxides, PL is controlled by steric factors, with strong luminescence in compounds with Au-O-C-C torsion angles <50°. Calculations confirm the dependence of oscillator strength on the torsion angle, as well as the inter-ligand charge transfer nature of the emission. The HOMO/LUMO energy levels were estimated based on first reduction and oxidation potentials.

Synthesis, crystal structure, DFT studies and photophysical properties of a copper(I)–triphenylphosphane complex based on trans-(±)-2,4,5-tris(pyridin-2-yl)-2-imidazoline

The possibility of using less expensive and nontoxic metals, such as copper, as substitutes for more expensive heavy metals in the synthesis of new transition-metal complexes to be used as sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) has stimulated research in this field. The novel photoluminescent copper(I) complex bis(triphenylphosphane-κP)[trans-(±)-2,4,5-tris(pyridin-2-yl)-2-imidazoline-κ2 N 2,N 3]copper(I) hexafluorophosphate, [CuI(C18H15N5)(C18H15P)2]PF6, has been successfully synthesized and characterized by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy, as well as by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. The complex showed interesting photophysical properties, which were studied experimentally in solution and in the solid state by UV–Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations with dichloromethane as solvent reproduced reasonably well the HOMO and LUMO orbitals of the title compound.

Luminescent CuI thiocyanate complexes based on tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine and its oxide: from mono-, di- and trinuclear species to coordination polymers

The synthesis, structural and photophysical properties of the novel family of Cu(i) thiocyanate complexes supported by tripodal ligands are presented.

Mixed-valence copper(i,ii) complexes with 4-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-6-R-pyrimidines: from ionic structures to coordination polymers

All copper ions in a copper(i,ii) mixed-valence 1D-polymer show tetrahedral coordination cores, CuNBr₃ and CuN₂Br₂, which is extremely rare for mixed-valence copper(i,ii) compounds.

Synthesis, Structural Characterisation, and Spectroscopic Properties of Copper(I) Complexes and their Applications to Dye-Sensitised Solar Cells

Based on the ligand 1,4-bis(2-(diphenylphophino)benzylideneamino)benzene (pbb), two complexes, [Cu2(pbb)(2,2′-bipyridine)2](BF4)2 (1) and [Cu2(pbb)(phen)2](BF4)2 (2), have been prepared and characterised by IR, 1H NMR, 31P NMR, 19F NMR, and 11B NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystal structure analysis. Structural analysis reveals that complexes 1 and 2 contain 1D infinite chains and 2D supramolecular networks constructed by C–H···π and π···π interactions, and an ordered-layer-lattice of BF4– is located between these 2D networks. The results show that C–H···π and π···π interactions play an important role in the formation of 2D supramolecular networks. The UV-vis absorption peaks of complexes 1 and 2 display intraligand charge transfer and metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorption. Complexes 1 and 2 display efficient luminescent emission assigned to MLCT excited states, and the maximum emissions of these complexes in acetonitrile solution are different from those of the solid-state samples. In addition, complexes 1 and 2 have been exploited as sensitisers in dye-sensitised solar cells, and efficiencies are also observed.

Synthesis, structure, characterization and photophysical properties of copper(i) complexes containing polypyridyl ligands

Two novel photoluminescent copper(i) complexes have been successfully synthesized and characterized. Both complexes showed interesting photophysical properties.
