Crystal structure of a tris(2-amino-eth-yl)methane capped carbamoyl-methyl-phosphine oxide compound

The mol-ecular structure of the tripodal carbamoyl-methyl-phosphine oxide compound diethyl {[(5-[2-(di-eth-oxy-phosphor-yl)acetamido]-3-{2-[2-(di-eth-oxy-phos-phor-yl)acetamido]-eth-yl}pent-yl)carbamo-yl]meth-yl}phospho-nate, C25H52N3O12P3, features six intra-molecular hydrogen-bonding inter-actions. The phospho-nate groups have key bond lengths ranging from 1.4696 (12) to 1.4729 (12) Å (P=O), 1.5681 (11) to 1.5811 (12) Å (P-O) and 1.7881 (16) to 1.7936 (16) Å (P-C). Each amide group adopts a nearly perfect trans geometry, and the geometry around each phophorus atom resembles a slightly distorted tetra-hedron.

Selective Liquid-Liquid Extraction of Thorium(IV) from Rare-Earth Element Mixtures

One of the major challenges in processing rare-earth element (REE) materials arises from the large amounts of radioactive thorium (Th) that are often found within REE minerals, encouraging enhanced metal separation procedures. We report here a study aimed at developing improved systems for REE processing with the goal of efficient extraction of Th(IV) from acidic solution. A tripodal ligand, TRPN-CMPO-Ph, was prepared that utilizes carbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (CMPO) chelators tethered to a tris(3-aminopropyl)amine (TRPN) capping scaffold. The ligand and its metal complexes were characterized by using elemental analysis, NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and luminescence spectroscopy. Using a liquid-liquid metal extraction protocol, TRPN-CMPO-Ph selectively extracts Th(IV) at an efficiency of 79% from a mixture of Th(IV), UO22+, and all rare-earth metal cations (except promethium) dissolved in nitric acid into an organic solvent. Th(IV) extraction selectivity is maintained upon extraction from a mixture that approximates a typical monazite leach solution containing several relevant lanthanide ions, including two ions at higher concentration relative to Th(IV). Comparative studies with a tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (TREN)-capped derivative are presented and support the need for a larger TRPN capping scaffold in achieving Th(IV) extraction selectivity.

Crystal structures of two bis-carbamoyl-methyl-phosphine oxide (CMPO) compounds

Two bis-carbamoyl-methyl-phosphine oxide compounds, namely {[(3-{[2-(di-phen-yl-phosphino-yl)ethanamido]-meth-yl}benz-yl)carbamo-yl]meth-yl}di-phenyl-phos-phine oxide, C36H34N2O4P2, (I), and diethyl [({2-[2-(di-eth-oxy-phosphino-yl)ethanamido]-eth-yl}carbamo-yl)meth-yl]phospho-nate, C14H30N2O8P2, (II), were synthesized via nucleophilic acyl substitution reactions between an ester and a primary amine. Hydrogen-bonding inter-actions are present in both crystals, but these inter-actions are intra-molecular in the case of compound (I) and inter-molecular in compound (II). Intra-molecular π-π stacking inter-actions are also present in the crystal of compound (I) with a centroid-centroid distance of 3.9479 (12) Å and a dihedral angle of 9.56 (12)°. Inter-molecular C-H⋯π inter-actions [C⋯centroid distance of 3.622 (2) Å, C-H⋯centroid angle of 146°] give rise to supra-molecular sheets that lie in the ab plane. Key geometric features for compound (I) involve a nearly planar, trans-amide group with a C-N-C-C torsion angle of 169.12 (17)°, and a torsion angle of -108.39 (15)° between the phosphine oxide phospho-rus atom and the amide nitro-gen atom. For compound (II), the electron density corresponding to the phosphoryl group was disordered, and was modeled as two parts with a 0.7387 (19):0.2613 (19) occupancy ratio. Compound (II) also boasts a trans-amide group that approaches planarity with a C-N-C-C torsion angle of -176.50 (16)°. The hydrogen bonds in this structure are inter-molecular, with a D⋯A distance of 2.883 (2) Å and a D-H⋯A angle of 175.0 (18)° between the amide hydrogen atom and the P=O oxygen atom. These non-covalent inter-actions create ribbons that run along the b-axis direction.

Crystallographic and Spectroscopic Characterization of Americium Complexes Containing the Bis[(phosphino)methyl]pyridine-1-oxide (NOPOPO) Ligand Platform

The crystal structures of americium species containing a common multifunctional phosphine oxide ligand, reported for its ability to extract f elements from acidic solutions, namely, 2,6-[Ph₂P(O)CH₂]₂C₅H₃-NO, L, were finally determined after over three decades of separations studies involving these species and their surrogates. The molecular compounds Am(L)(NO₃)₃, Am 1:1, and [Am(L)₂(NO₃)][2(NO₃)], Am 2:1, along with their neodymium and europium analogues, were synthesized and characterized using single-crystal X-ray crystallography, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy to provide a comprehensive comparison with new and known analogous complexes.
