Vari-focal liquid microlens array using an electrically responsive fluid actuated by a ring array patterned electrode

A transparent fluid dibutyl adipate (DBA) is suitable for fabricating the adaptive lens due to its unique deformation under a direct current (DC) electric field. In this report, a DBA liquid microlens array (LMA) with a tunable focal length is demonstrated. A hydrophobic layer deposited in the ring array patterns on the electrode induced the formation of the DBA liquid microdroplets array self-assembly. The electronegative DBA liquid tends to move to the anode at a DC voltage. The proposed DBA LMA with a diameter of 100 µm can change its focal length from 0.92 to 1.42 mm when the voltage changes from 0 to 200 V. The response time is relatively fast (∼790m s). Due to the high optical transmittance (∼91%) and good thermal stability in the temperature range of -24.8-161.5^∘C, our DBA LMA shows good focusing properties and has potential applications in the field of image processing, portable electronic devices, beam steering, ophthalmology, and 3D displays.

In Situ Electrohydrodynamic Jet Printing-Based Fabrication of Tunable Microlens Arrays

Tunable microlens arrays (MLAs) with controllable focal lengths have been extensively used in optical sensors, biochips, and electronic devices. The commonly used method is electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) that controls the contact angle of the microlens to adjust the focal length. However, the fabrication of tunable MLAs at the microscale remains a challenge because the size of MLAs is limited by the external electrodes of EWOD. In this study, a highly integrated planar annular microelectrode array was proposed to achieve an electrowetting tunable MLA. The planar microelectrode was fabricated by electrohydrodynamic jet (E-jet) printing and the liquid microlens was then deposited in situ on the microelectrode. This method could realize 36 tunable liquid microlenses with an average diameter of 24 μm in a 320 × 320 μm² plane. The fabricated tunable MLAs with higher integration levels and smaller sizes can be beneficial for cell imaging, optofluidic systems, and microfluidic chips.

Anomalous dynamics in tracer-particle motions in an electrohydrodynamically driven oil-in-oil system

We characterize the superdiffusive dynamics of tracer particles in an electrohydrodynamically driven emulsion of oil droplets in an immiscible oil medium, where the amplitude and frequency of an external electric field are the control parameters. In the weakly driven electrohydrodynamic regime, the droplets are trapped dielectrophoretically on a patterned electrode, and the driving is therefore spatially varying. We find excellent agreement with a 〈x^{2}〉∼t^{1.5} power law and find that this superdiffusive dynamics arises from an underlying displacement distribution that is distinctly non-Gaussian and exponential for small displacements and short times. While these results are comparable with a random-velocity field model, the tracer particle speeds are in fact spatially varying in two dimensions, arising from a spatially varying electrohydrodynamic driving force. This suggests that the important ingredient for the superdiffusive t^{1.5} behavior observed is a velocity field that is isotropic in the plane and spatially correlated. Finally, we can extract, from the superdiffusive dynamics, a experimental length scale that corresponds to the lateral range of the hydrodynamic flows. This experimental length scale is non zero only above a threshold ion mobility length.

Optics-Integrated Microfluidic Platforms for Biomolecular Analyses

Compared with conventional optical methods, optics implemented on microfluidic chips provide small, and often much cheaper ways to interrogate biological systems from the level of single molecules up to small model organisms. The optical probing of single molecules has been used to investigate the mechanical properties of individual biological molecules; however, multiplexing of these measurements through microfluidics and nanofluidics confers many analytical advantages. Optics-integrated microfluidic systems can significantly simplify sample processing and allow a more user-friendly experience; alignments of on-chip optical components are predetermined during fabrication and many purely optical techniques are passively controlled. Furthermore, sample loss from complicated preparation and fluid transfer steps can be virtually eliminated, a particularly important attribute for biological molecules at very low concentrations. Excellent fluid handling and high surface area/volume ratios also contribute to faster detection times for low abundance molecules in small sample volumes. Although integration of optical systems with classical microfluidic analysis techniques has been limited, microfluidics offers a ready platform for interrogation of biophysical properties. By exploiting the ease with which fluids and particles can be precisely and dynamically controlled in microfluidic devices, optical sensors capable of unique imaging modes, single molecule manipulation, and detection of minute changes in concentration of an analyte are possible.

Bio-inspired eyes with eyeball-shaped lenses actuated by electro-hydrodynamic forces

Eye ball-shaped lenses, composed of a LCC-MLA are constructed through electro-hydrodynamic actuation. The curvature is adjusted by the electro-hydrodynamic force difference upon the lens interface. Bio-inspired eyes manifest a six-folds varifocal capability in 50 ms.
