Optical Processes behind Plasmonic Applications

Plasmonics is a revolutionary concept in nanophotonics that combines the properties of both photonics and electronics by confining light energy to a nanometer-scale oscillating field of free electrons, known as a surface plasmon. Generation, processing, routing, and amplification of optical signals at the nanoscale hold promise for optical communications, biophotonics, sensing, chemistry, and medical applications. Surface plasmons manifest themselves as confined oscillations, allowing for optical nanoantennas, ultra-compact optical detectors, state-of-the-art sensors, data storage, and energy harvesting designs. Surface plasmons facilitate both resonant characteristics of nanostructures and guiding and controlling light at the nanoscale. Plasmonics and metamaterials enable the advancement of many photonic designs with unparalleled capabilities, including subwavelength waveguides, optical nanoresonators, super- and hyper-lenses, and light concentrators. Alternative plasmonic materials have been developed to be incorporated in the nanostructures for low losses and controlled optical characteristics along with semiconductor-process compatibility. This review describes optical processes behind a range of plasmonic applications. It pays special attention to the topics of field enhancement and collective effects in nanostructures. The advances in these research topics are expected to transform the domain of nanoscale photonics, optical metamaterials, and their various applications.

Landau Damping in Hybrid Plasmonics

The Landau damping (LD) mechanism of the localized surface plasmon (LSP) decay is studied for the hybrid nanoplasmonic (metal core/dielectric shell) structures. It is shown that LD in hybrid structures is strongly affected by the permittivity and the electron effective mass in the dielectric shell in accordance with previous observations by Kreibig, and the strength of LD can be enhanced by an order of magnitude for some combinations of permittivity and effective mass. The physical reason for this effect is identified as an electron spillover into the dielectric where the electric field is higher than that in the metal and the presence of quasi-discrete energy levels in the dielectric. The theory indicates that the transition absorption at the metal-dielectric interface is a dominant contribution to LD in such hybrid structures. Thus, by judicious selection of dielectric material and its thickness, one can engineer decay rates and hot carrier production for important applications, such as photodetection and photochemistry.

Resonance photogeneration of hot electrons through Tamm surface states

Internal surface photoemission of electrons from 1D crystal into a barrier with participation of Tamm state (TS) at the interface crystal barrier is considered theoretically for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. It is shown that resonant tunneling of electrons through a TS could lead to substantial enhancement of the quantum efficiency and lowering the red border to a value defined by the TS. In contrast to the Fowler quadratic law, the photocurrent scales linearly with photon energy near the red border. The results suggest that the efficiency of hot electron generation with plasmonic metal nanoparticles could reach several tens of percent, which is very attractive for application in energy conversion technologies such as water splitting.

Controlling the Spatial and Momentum Distributions of Plasmonic Carriers: Volume vs Surface Effects

Spatial and momentum distributions of excited charge carriers in nanoplasmonic systems depend sensitively on optical excitation parameters and nanoscale geometry, which therefore control the efficiency and functionality of plasmon-enhanced catalysts, photovoltaics, and nanocathodes. Growing appreciation over the past decade for the different roles of volume- vs surface-mediated excitation in such systems has underscored the need for explicit separation and quantification of these pathways. Toward these ends, we utilize angle-resolved photoelectron velocity map imaging to distinguish these processes in gold nanorods of different aspect ratios down to the spherical limit. Despite coupling to the longitudinal surface plasmon, we find that resonantly excited nanorods always exhibit transverse (sideways) multiphoton photoemission distributions due to photoexcitation within volume field enhancement regions rather than at the tip hot spots. This behavior is accurately reproduced via ballistic Monte Carlo modeling, establishing that volume-excited electrons primarily escape through the nanorod sides. Furthermore, we demonstrate optical control over the photoelectron angular distributions via a screening-induced transition from volume (transverse/side) to surface (longitudinal/tip) photoemission with red detuning of the excitation laser. Frequency-dependent cross sections are separately quantified for these mechanisms by comparison with theoretical calculations, combining volume and surface velocity-resolved photoemission modeling. Based on these results, we identify nanomaterial-specific contributions to the photoemission cross sections and offer general nanoplasmonic design principles for controlling photoexcitation/emission distributions via geometry- and frequency-dependent tuning of the volume vs surface fields.

Nanoscale Engineering of Optical nonlinearity Based on a Metal Nitride/Oxide Heterostructure

The abilities to modulate linear and nonlinear optical response of materials in the nanoscale are of central importance in the design and fabrication of photonic devices for applications like optical modulators. Here, based on a simple transition metal oxide/nitride (TiO₂/TiN) system, we show that it is possible to tune the optical properties by controlling the nanoscale architecture. Through controlled oxidation of the plasmonic TiN nanoparticle surfaces, we observe a continuous change of linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties with the increase of the thickness of the oxide layer in the TiN/TiO₂ heterogeneous architecture. The NLO response is manifested by the strong saturable absorption with a structurally tunable negative NLO absorption coefficient. The variation in the NLO absorption coefficient by up to 7-fold can be connected to the relative change in the volume fraction of the metallic core and the dielectric shell. We demonstrate further that the optimized TiN-TiO₂ heterostructures can be used to drive an optical switch for pulse laser generation in the 1.5 μm wavelength region. Our results delineate a topochemical process for optimization of the NLO properties of common plasmonic materials for photonic applications based on simple materials chemistry.

Continuous angular control over anisotropic photoemission from isotropic gold nanoshells

A variety of applications rely on the efficient generation of hot carriers within metal nanoparticles and charge transfer to surrounding molecules or materials. The optimization of such processes requires a detailed understanding of excited carrier spatial, temporal, and momentum distributions, which also leads to opportunities for active optical control over hot carrier dynamics on nanometer and femtosecond scales. Such capabilities are emerging in nanoplasmonic systems and typically rely on tuning optical polarization and/or frequency to selectively excite one or more discrete hot spots defined by the particle geometry. Here, we introduce a unique case in which hot electron excitation and emission distributions can instead be continuously controlled via linear laser polarization in the azimuthal plane of a gold nanoshell supported on a substrate. In this configuration, it is the laser field that breaks the azimuthal symmetry of the supported nanoshell and determines the plasmonic field distribution. Using angle-resolved photoelectron velocity map imaging, we find that the hot electrons are predominantly emitted orthogonal to the nanoshell dipolar surface plasmon resonance axis defined by the laser polarization. Furthermore, such anisotropic emission is only observed for nanoshells, while solid gold nanospheres are found to be isotropic emitters. We show that all of these effects are recapitulated via simulation of the plasmonic electric field distributions within the nanoparticle volume and ballistic Monte Carlo modeling of the hot electron dynamics. These results demonstrate a highly predictive level of understanding of the underlying physics and possibilities for ultrafast spatiotemporal control over hot carrier dynamics.

Plasmonic nanostar photocathodes for optically-controlled directional currents

Plasmonic nanocathodes offer unique opportunities for optically driving, switching, and steering femtosecond photocurrents in nanoelectronic devices and pulsed electron sources. However, angular photocurrent distributions in nanoplasmonic systems remain poorly understood and are therefore difficult to anticipate and control. Here, we provide a direct momentum-space characterization of multiphoton photoemission from plasmonic gold nanostars and demonstrate all-optical control over these currents. Versatile angular control is achieved by selectively exciting different tips on single nanostars via laser frequency or linear polarization, thereby rotating the tip-aligned directional photoemission as observed with angle-resolved 2D velocity mapping and 3D reconstruction. Classical plasmonic field simulations combined with quantum photoemission theory elucidate the role of surface-mediated nonlinear excitation for plasmonic field enhancements highly concentrated at the sharp tips (Rtip = 3.4 nm). We thus establish a simple mechanism for femtosecond spatiotemporal current control in designer nanosystems.

Quantifying the role of surface plasmon excitation and hot carrier transport in plasmonic devices

Harnessing photoexcited “hot” carriers in metallic nanostructures could define a new phase of non-equilibrium optoelectronics for photodetection and photocatalysis. Surface plasmons are considered pivotal for enabling efficient operation of hot carrier devices. Clarifying the fundamental role of plasmon excitation is therefore critical for exploiting their full potential. Here, we measure the internal quantum efficiency in photoexcited gold (Au)–gallium nitride (GaN) Schottky diodes to elucidate and quantify the distinct roles of surface plasmon excitation, hot carrier transport, and carrier injection in device performance. We show that plasmon excitation does not influence the electronic processes occurring within the hot carrier device. Instead, the metal band structure and carrier transport processes dictate the observed hot carrier photocurrent distribution. The excellent agreement with parameter-free calculations indicates that photoexcited electrons generated in ultra-thin Au nanostructures impinge ballistically on the Au–GaN interface, suggesting the possibility for hot carrier collection without substantial energy losses via thermalization.

Plasmonic Photovoltaic Cells with Dual-Functional Gold, Silver, and Copper Half-Shell Arrays

Solid-state photovoltaic cells based on plasmon-induced charge separation (PICS) have attracted growing attention during the past decade. However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the previously reported devices, which are generally loaded with dispersed metal nanoparticles as light absorbers, has not been sufficiently high. Here we report simpler plasmonic photovoltaic cells with interconnected Au, Ag, and Cu half-shell arrays deposited on SiO₂@TiO₂ colloidal crystals, which serve both as a plasmonic light absorber and as a current collector. The well-controlled and easily prepared plasmonic structure allows precise comparison of the PICS efficiency between different plasmonic metal species. The cell with the Ag half-shell array has higher photovoltaic performance than the cells with Au and Cu half-shell arrays because of the high population of photogenerated energetic electrons, which gives a high electron injection efficiency and suppressed charge recombination probability, achieving the highest PCE among the solid-state PICS devices even without a hole transport layer.

Plasmon-induced charge separation: chemistry and wide applications

Recent development of nanoplasmonics has stimulated chemists to utilize plasmonic nanomaterials for efficient and distinctive photochemical applications, and physicists to boldly go inside the "wet" chemistry world. The discovery of plasmon-induced charge separation (PICS) has even accelerated these trends. On the other hand, some confusion is found in discussions about PICS. In this perspective, we focus on differences between PICS and some other phenomena such as co-catalysis effect and plasmonic nanoantenna effect. In addition, materials and nanostructures suitable for PICS are shown, and characteristics and features unique to PICS are documented. Although it is well known that PICS has been applied to photovoltaics and photocatalysis, here light is shed on other applications that take better advantage of PICS, such as chemical sensing and biosensing, various photochromisms, photoswitchable functionalities and nanoscale photofabrication.

Site-Selective Plasmonic Etching of Silver Nanocubes

Plasmon-induced charge separation (PICS) at the interface between a plasmonic nanoparticle and semiconductor is now widely used for photovoltaics and photocatalysis. Here we take advantage of PICS for site-selective nanoetching of silver nanocubes on TiO₂ beyond the diffraction limit. A silver nanocube exhibits two resonance modes localized at the top and bottom of the nanocube (distal and proximal modes, respectively) when it is placed on TiO₂. We achieved selective etching at the top and the bottom of the nanocubes by PICS based on the distal and proximal modes, respectively. The site-selective nanophotonic etching reveals that the anodic reaction involved in PICS is induced by the plasmonic near field, which causes an external photoelectric effect. In particular, the distal mode etching at the top edges is explained in terms of ejection of energetic electrons (or hot electrons) from the distal site to TiO₂ across the nanocube.

Surface plasmon assisted hot electron collection in wafer-scale metallic-semiconductor photonic crystals

Plasmon assisted photoelectric hot electron collection in a metal-semiconductor junction can allow for sub-bandgap optical to electrical energy conversion. Here we report hot electron collection by wafer-scale Au/TiO₂ metallic-semiconductor photonic crystals (MSPhC), with a broadband photoresponse below the bandgap of TiO₂. Multiple absorption modes supported by the 2D nano-cavity structure of the MSPhC extend the photon-metal interaction time and fulfill a broadband light absorption. The surface plasmon absorption mode provides access to enhanced electric field oscillation and hot electron generation at the interface between Au and TiO₂. A broadband sub-bandgap photoresponse centered at 590 nm was achieved due to surface plasmon absorption. Gold nanorods were deposited on the surface of MSPhC to study localized surface plasmon (LSP) mode absorption and subsequent injection to the TiO₂ catalyst at different wavelengths. Applications of these results could lead to low-cost and robust photo-electrochemical applications such as more efficient solar water splitting.
