Abstract
Iodine promotes the in situ formation of iron(II) species from η4-vinylketene[Fe(CO)3] (3a-h) as a key intermediate for the synthesis of 2(5H)-furanones (4a-h) by a sequential water-insertion/carbon-oxygen coupling under mild reaction conditions. Compounds 4a-h were obtained in good to excellent yields. A possible reaction pathway was also proposed by DFT calculations. This methodology can be extended to the synthesis of (5H)-pyrrol-2-ones using anilines, with moderate yields and a few limitations.

Abstract
In this study, a simple one-pot construction of β-lactam scaffolds was successfully achieved via 4,6-dihydroxysalicylic acid-catalyzed organocatalytic oxidation of amines to imines using molecular oxygen. Although some imines are highly unstable and difficult to isolate by conventional methods, the organocatalytic oxidation of amines described herein, followed by their direct reaction with acyl chlorides in the presence of a base, afforded a series of new β-lactam derivatives with excellent cis selectivity, which could not be synthesized and isolated by previously reported methods. Thus, this one-pot protocol will be one of the powerful methods applicable to the synthesis of various potential drug candidates and functional molecules. Furthermore, the subsequent hydrolysis of these β-lactams successfully afforded the corresponding β-amino acids as almost single diastereomers in up to 99% yields.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to study the Pd-catalyzed C-H functionalization of (E)-N-methoxy cinnamamide (E1), which selectively provides the α-C-H activation products (EP as minor product and its C═C rotation isomer ZP' as major product). Three crucial issues are solved: (i) The detailed mechanism leading to ZP' is one issue. The computational analyses of the mechanisms proposed in previously experimental and theoretical literature do not seem to be consistent with the experimental findings due to the high barriers involved. Alternatively, we present a novel oxidation/reduction-promoted mechanism featuring the Pd(0) → Pd(II) → Pd(0) transformation. The newly proposed mechanism involves the initial coordination of the active catalyst PdL2 (L = t-BuCN) with the C═C bond in EP, followed by the oxidative cyclization/reductive decyclization-assisted C═C double-bond rotation processes resulting in ZP' and regeneration of PdL2. (ii) The origin of the product E/Z selectivity is the second issue. On the basis of the calculated results, it is found that, at the initial stage of the reaction, EP is certainly completely generated, while no ZP' formation occurred. Once E1 is used up, EP immediately acts as the partner of the new catalytic cycle and sluggishly evolves into ZP'. A small amount of generated ZP' would reversibly transform to EP due to the higher barrier involved. (iii) The intrinsic reasons for the regioselectivity are the third issue. The calculated results indicate that the regioselectivity for α-C-H activation is mainly attributed to the stronger electrostatic attraction between the α-C and the metal center.

Abstract
A multicomponent Ugi reaction involving isatin, isocyanide and β-amino acid components has been developed. The reactions proceeded smoothly to give β-lactam-containing 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles in only one step and generally high yields. When chiral, non racemic, β-amino acids were used, products were obtained as enantiomerically pure β-lactams diastereoisomers, whose relative stereochemistry was determined by X-ray analysis. For one compound, a weak antibacterial activity has been preliminarily highlighted. A multicomponent Ugi reaction involving isatin, isocyanide and β-amino acid components has been developed.![]()

Abstract
Metathesis reactions is firmly established as a valuable synthetic tool in organic chemistry, clearly comparable with the venerable Diels-Alder and Wittig reactions and, more recently, with the metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Metathesis reactions can be considered as a fascinating synthetic methodology, allowing different variants regarding substrate (alkene and alkyne metathesis) and type of metathetical reactions. On the other hand, tandem metathesis reactions such Ring Rearrangement Metathesis (RRM) and the coupling of metathesis reaction with other reactions of alkenes such as Diels-Alder or Heck reactions, makes metathesis one of the most powerful and reliable synthetic procedure. In particular, Ring-Rearrangement Metathesis (RRM) refers to the combination of several metathesis transformations into a domino process such as ring-opening metathesis (ROM)/ring-closing metathesis (RCM) and ROM-cross metathesis (CM) in a one-pot operation. RRM delivers complex frameworks that are difficult to assemble by conventional methods constitutingan atom economic process. RRM is applicable to mono- and polycyclic systems of varying ring sizes such as cyclopropene, cyclobutene, cyclopentene, cyclohexene, pyran systems, bicyclo[2.2.1]heptene derivatives, bicyclo[2.2.2]octene derivatives, bicyclo[3.2.1]octene derivatives and bicyclo[3.2.1]octene derivatives. In this review our attention has focused on the RRM reactions in 7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptene derivatives and on their application in the synthesis of natural products or significant subunits of them.
