Abstract
Alcohols are abundant and attractive feedstock molecules for organic synthesis. Many methods for their functionalization require them to first be converted into a more activated derivative, while recent years have seen a vast increase in the number of complexity-building transformations that directly harness unprotected alcohols. This Review discusses how transition metal catalysis can be used toward this goal. These transformations are broadly classified into three categories. Deoxygenative functionalizations, representing derivatization of the C-O bond, enable the alcohol to act as a leaving group toward the formation of new C-C bonds. Etherifications, characterized by derivatization of the O-H bond, represent classical reactivity that has been modernized to include mild reaction conditions, diverse reaction partners, and high selectivities. Lastly, chain functionalization reactions are described, wherein the alcohol group acts as a mediator in formal C-H functionalization reactions of the alkyl backbone. Each of these three classes of transformation will be discussed in context of intermolecular arylation, alkylation, and related reactions, illustrating how catalysis can enable alcohols to be directly harnessed for organic synthesis.

Abstract
An iodine-promoted domino reaction of arylamines/benzylamines, dialkyl but-2-ynedioates and 3-hydroxy-3-(indol-3-yl)indolin-2-ones showed very interesting molecular diversity. The reaction in acetonitrile at 65 °C in the presence of 30% mmol I2 resulted in spiro[indoline-3,1'-pyrido[4,3-b]indoles] in satisfactory yields. When anilines without para-substituents were used in the reaction, a direct substitution of the hydroxyl group to 2-(phenylamino)maleate at the para-position of aniline gave chain products in good yields. Additionally, similar reactions with benzylamines not only gave spiro[indoline-3,1'-pyrido[4,3-b]indoles], but also afforded spiro[indoline-3,1'-pyrano[4,3-b]indol]-2-ones in lower yields. A plausible domino annulation mechanism was rationally proposed for the formation of different kinds of polycyclic compounds.

Abstract
The In(OTf)3-catalyzed α-vinylation of various hydroxy-functionalized quaternary carbon centers using in situ generated isobutylene from tert-butyl acetate is presented as a novel synthetic methodology. Moreover, tert-butyl acetate is a nonflammable feed stock and is a readily available source for the in situ production of vinyl substituents, as demonstrated by the vinylation reaction with quaternary hydroxy/methoxy compounds. Moreover, an excellent selectivity for methylallylation over vinylation was obtained with Ni(OTf)2 as a catalyst. In the case of peroxyoxindole, methylallyl-functionalized 1,4-benzoxazin-3-one derivatives were formed through the sequential rearrangement of peroxyoxindole followed by the nucleophilic attack by isobutylene. The detailed mechanism for this reaction and rationalization for the selectivity are provided using kinetics and density functional theory studies.

Abstract
Brønsted acid- and/or Lewis acid-catalyzed selective C3-allylation and formal [3 + 2]-annulation of spiro-aziridine oxindoles with allylsilanes have been demonstrated to deliver direct access to 3-allyl-3-aminomethyl oxindoles and 5-silyl methyl spiro[pyrrolidine-3,3'-oxindoles], respectively. The acid-catalyzed methods do not provide any stereoselectivity when chiral spiroaziridines are used. However, the reaction of nonracemic sprioaziridines with allyl-Grignard reagent under catalyst-free conditions afforded 3-allyl-3-aminomethyl oxindoles with good stereoselectivity (ee up to 80%). The allylation protocol is utilized for the short synthesis of coerulescine and various 5'-substituted spiro[pyrrolidine-3,3'-oxindoles].

Abstract
The first copper-catalyzed direct dehydrative alkynylation of 2H-chromene hemiketals with terminal alkynes has been uncovered. The use of cheap and readily available CuCl2 as the catalyst allowed the preparation of various 2,2-disubstituted 2-alkynylated 2H-chromenes in moderate to good yields, which compensates for the limitation of the current methods only suited for the synthesis of 2-monosubsituted 2-alkynylated 2H-chromenes.

Abstract
Herein, a divergent synthesis of a variety of 2α- and 5α-substituted furan derivatives from 2-hydroxy-1,4-diones is reported. By using appropriate substrates and an acid catalyst, the reactions occurred selectively through cyclization/1,6-conjugate addition or cyclization/Friedel-Crafts-type cascade reactions. A broad range of nucleophilic reagents (>10 types for the 1,6-conjugate addition for 5α substitution and >20 types for the Friedel-Crafts-type cascade reaction for 2α substitution), including alcohols, amides, furan, thiophene, pyrrole, indole, phenols, and many others, can successfully participate in the reactions, providing a universal strategy for a diversity-oriented synthesis of α-substituted furan derivatives. Deuteriation experiments and DFT calculations were carried out to support the proposed reaction mechanisms. Antifungal activity experiments revealed that products with an indole or 4-hydroxycoumarin core substituted at the 2α position showed moderate activities against Rhizoctorzia solani and Botrytis cinerea, respectively.

Abstract
:Nanoparticle catalyzed synthesis is a green and convenient method to achieve most of the chemical transformations in water or other green solvents. Nanoparticle ensures an easy isolation process of catalyst as well as products from the reaction mixture avoiding the hectic work up procedure. Zinc oxide is a biocompatible, environmentally benign and economically viable nanocatalyst with effectivity comparable to the other metal nanocatalyst employed in several reaction strategies. This review mainly focuses on the recent applications of zinc oxide in the synthesis of biologically important heterocyclic molecules under sustainable reaction conditions.:Application of zinc oxide in organic synthesis: Considering the achievable advantages of this nanocatalyst, presently several research groups are paying attention in anchoring zincoxide or its modified structure in several types of organic conversions e.g. multicomponent reactions, ligand-free coupling reactions, cycloaddition reaction, etc. The advantages and limitations of this nanocatalyst are also demonstrated. The present study aims to highlight the recent multifaceted applications of ZnO towards the synthesis of diverse heterocyclic motifs. Being a promising biocompatible nanoparticle, this catalyst has an important contribution in the fields of synthetic chemistry and medicinal chemistry.

Abstract
An efficient Cu(ii)-PHOX-catalyzed malonate addition onto 3-hydroxy 3-indolyl-2-oxindoles is envisioned to afford excellent enantioselectivities (up to >99% ee) in high chemical yields. Detailed characterization techniques including X-ray, NMR, CV and EPR experiments suggest that a Cu(ii)-complex is involved as an active species in this process. Applying this strategy, an advanced intermediate of cyclotryptamine alkaloids has been synthesized in few steps for a general approach to bis-cyclotryptamine alkaloids.
