Abstract
We report here a silver-catalyzed method for the enantio- and diastereodivergent synthesis of chiral pyroglutamic acid esters with multiple stereocenters. This process proceeds through asymmetric conjugate addition of glycine imine esters to a broad range of β-substituted α,β-unsaturated perfluorophenyl esters followed by lactamization. By leveraging catalyst control and stereospecificity of the 1,4-addition process, all four product stereoisomers containing two adjacent stereocenters are accessible with high stereoselectivity.

Abstract
Direct α-functionalization of NH2 -free glycinates with relatively weak electrophiles such as α,β-unsaturated esters still remains a big challenge in organic synthesis. With chiral pyridoxal 5 d as a carbonyl catalyst, direct asymmetric conjugated addition at the α-C of glycinate 1 a with α,β-unsaturated esters 2 has been successfully realized, to produce various chiral pyroglutamic acid esters 4 in 14-96 % yields with 81-97 % ee's after in situ lactamization. The trans and cis diastereomers can be obtained at the same time by chromatography and both of them can be easily converted into chiral 4-substituted pyrrolidin-2-ones such as Alzheimer's drug Rolipram (11) with the same absolute configuration via tert-butyl group removal and subsequent Barton decarboxylation.

Abstract
Electrically driven oxidation and reduction reactions are well-established methods for synthesis even in the chemical industry, but asymmetric versions are still few. The mild conditions used, atom efficiency and low cost make these reactions a very attractive alternative to other methods of synthesis. Very fine tuning can be achieved based on minute changes in potentials, allowing only one functional group in a molecule to react in the presence of several others, which is ideal for applications in total synthesis. In this review, the literature in the field of asymmetric synthesis of biologically active substances over the last 10 years is surveyed.

Abstract
Fluorine does not belong to the pool of chemical elements that nature uses to build organic matter. However, chemists have exploited the unique properties of fluorine and produced countless fluoro-organic compounds without which our everyday lives would be unimaginable. The incorporation of fluorine into amino acids established a completely new class of amino acids and their properties, and those of the biopolymers constructed from them are extremely interesting. Increasing interest in this class of amino acids caused the demand for robust and stereoselective synthetic protocols that enable straightforward access to these building blocks. Herein, we present a comprehensive account of the literature in this field going back to 1995. We place special emphasis on a particular fluorination strategy. The four main sections describe fluorinated versions of alkyl, cyclic, aromatic amino acids, and also nickel-complexes to access them. We progress by one carbon unit increments. Special cases of amino acids for which there is no natural counterpart are described at the end of each section. Synthetic access to each of the amino acids is summarized in form of a table at the end of this article with the aim to make the information easily accessible to the reader.

Abstract
Herein, we disclose the design of a model Ni(II) complex of glycine Schiff base possessing single-nitrogen stereogenic center, which was successfully used for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-assisted assessment of its configurational stability. The major finding is that the configurational stability of the Ni(II)-coordinated nitrogen is profoundly dependent on the reaction conditions used, in particular the solvent, and can range from inconsequential (t½ less than 5 min) to virtually completely stable (t½ 90 y). The discovery reported in this study most likely to be of certain theoretical and synthetic value.

Abstract
In this work, we disclose an advanced general process for the synthesis of tailor-made α-amino acids (α-AAs) via tandem alkylation-second-order asymmetric transformation. The first step is the alkylation of the chiral Ni(II) complex of glycine Schiff base, which is conducted under mild phase-transfer conditions allowing the structural construction of target α-AAs. The second step is based on the methodologically rare second-order asymmetric transformation, resulting in nearly complete precipitation of the corresponding (SC,RN,RC)-configured diastereomer, which can be collected by a simple filtration. The operational convenience and potential scalability of all experimental procedures, coupled with excellent stereochemical outcome, render this method of high synthetic value for the preparation of various tailor-made α-AAs.

Abstract
The reactivity of MoCl5 with α-amino acids was investigated for the first time by choosing CH2Cl2 as the reaction medium. The interaction of MoCl5 with l-proline proceeded with Cl/O interchange and led to the formation of [NH2(CH2)3CHC(O)Cl][MoOCl4], 1, in 63% yield. The reactions of MoCl5 with l-phenylalanine, sarcosine, N,N-dimethylglycine and N,N-dimethyl-l-phenylalanine afforded the α-amino-acylchloride complexes MoOCl3[O[double bond, length as m-dash]C(Cl)CH(R)N(R')(R'')] (R = CH2Ph, R' = R'' = H, 2a; R = R' = H, R'' = Me, 2b; R = H, R' = R'' = Me, 2c R = CH2Ph, R' = R'' = Me, 2d), in ca. 70% yields. According to DFT studies, 2a,d are mononuclear Mo(v) octahedral complexes bearing a N,O-coordinated α-amino-acylchloride ligand. The presumed species formed during the first stages of the MoCl5/l-phenylalanine interaction were DFT-elucidated, thus the calculated Gibbs free energy profile for the multi-step reaction of MoCl5 with l-phenylalanine was traced. [NH3CH(CH2Ph)C(O)Cl][MoOCl4], 3, acting as an intermediate in the course of the formation of 2a, was isolated by combination of [NH3CH(CH2Ph)C(O)Cl][Cl] with MoOCl3.

Abstract
Dinuclear complexes of formula Nb2Cl9[O2CCH(R)NR'R″2-κO,κO] (R = CH2CHMe2, R' = R″ = H, 1a; R = CH2Ph, R' = R″ = H, 1b; R = CH2CH2SCH3, R' = R″ = H, 1c; R = R' = H, R″ = Me, 1d; R = CH2Ph, R' = R″ = Me, 1e; Nb2Cl9[O2C⌈CH(CH2)3NH⌉], 1f) were prepared by allowing NbCl5 to react in dichloromethane with the appropriate α-amino acid in 1:2 amino acid/Nb molar ratio. The 1:1 reactions between MX5 (M = Nb, Ta; X = Cl, Br) and a series of α-amino acids resulted in the formation of the iminium salts [(R)CH═NR'R″2][MX6] (R = CH2Ph, R' = R″ = Me: M = Nb, X = Cl, 2a; M = Nb, X = Br, 2b; M = Ta, X = Cl, 2c; M = Ta, X = Br, 2d; R = CH2Ph, R' = R″ = H, M = Nb: X = Cl, 3a; X = Br, 3b; R = CH2CHMe2, R' = R″ = H, M = Nb, X = Cl, 4; R = R' = H, R″ = Me, M = Nb, X = Cl, 5). The formate/amino acidate derivative NbCl3(O2CH)[O2CCH(CH2Ph)NMe2], 6, was isolated and identified as coproduct of the 1:1 reaction between NbCl5 and N,N-dimethyl-l-phenylalanine, leading to 2a. All of the compounds were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic methods and by X-ray diffractometry in the cases of 2a, 2b, and 2d. Moreover, density functional theory studies were carried out to shed light on mechanistic and structural aspects.

Abstract
Reported herein is the first purely chemical method for the dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) of unprotected racemic α-amino acids (α-AAs), a method which can rival the economic efficiency of the enzymatic reactions. The DKR reaction principle can be readily applied for S/R interconversions of α-AAs, the methodological versatility of which is unmatched by biocatalytic approaches. The presented process features a virtually complete stereochemical outcome, fully recyclable source of chirality, and operationally simple and convenient reaction conditions, thus allowing its ready scalability. A quite unique and novel mode of the thermodynamic control over the stereochemical outcome, including an exciting interplay between axial, helical, and central elements of chirality is proposed.
