Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 to CO in Aqueous Solution under Red-Light Irradiation by a Zn-Porphyrin-Sensitized Mn(I) Catalyst

This work demonstrates photocatalytic CO₂ reduction by a noble-metal-free photosensitizer-catalyst system in aqueous solution under red-light irradiation. A water-soluble Mn(I) tricarbonyl diimine complex, [MnBr(4,4′-{Et₂O₃PCH₂}₂-2,2′-bipyridyl)(CO)₃] (1), has been fully characterized, including single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and shown to reduce CO₂ to CO following photosensitization by tetra(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphyrin Zn(II) tetrachloride [Zn(TMPyP)]Cl₄ (2) under 625 nm irradiation. This is the first example of 2 employed as a photosensitizer for CO₂ reduction. The incorporation of −P(O)(OEt)₂ groups, decoupled from the core of the catalyst by a −CH₂– spacer, afforded water solubility without compromising the electronic properties of the catalyst. The photostability of the active Mn(I) catalyst over prolonged periods of irradiation with red light was confirmed by ¹H and ¹³C{¹H} NMR spectroscopy. This first report on Mn(I) species as a homogeneous photocatalyst, working in water and under red light, illustrates further future prospects of intrinsically photounstable Mn(I) complexes as solar-driven catalysts in an aqueous environment.

A Mn(I) bipyridyl tricarbonyl complex, where the diimine ligand is functionalized with water-solubilizing phosphonate ester groups, has been prepared and is shown to catalytically convert CO₂ to CO in aqueous solution following photosensitization from a water-soluble Zn(II) porphyrin under red-light irradiation.

Effect of halide ions on the fluorescence properties of 3-aminoquinoline in aqueous medium

Fluorescence (FL) quenching of 3-aminoquinoline (3AQ) by halide ions Cl - Br - and I - has been explored in an aqueous acidic medium using the steady-state and time-domain FL measurement techniques. The halide ions showed no significant change in the absorption spectra of 3AQ in an aqueous acidic medium. The FL intensity is strongly quenched by I - ions and the order of FL quenching by halide ions is I - > Br - > Cl - . The decrease in FL lifetime along with a reduction in FL intensity of 3AQ suggested the dynamic nature of quenching. The obtained value of K SV was 328 M - 1 for I - ions and 119 M - 1 for Br - ions and the value k q was around 1.66 × 10 10 M - 1 s - 1 and 6.02 × 10 9 M - 1 s - 1 , respectively. Thus, the observations suggest that the likely governing mechanism for FL quenching should be an electron transfer process and the involvement of the heavy atom effect.

Photoinduced Electron Transfer between DNA and Water-Soluble Porphyrins

Photophysical properties of five kinds of porphyrins (H₂TMPyP, ZnTMPyP, PdTMPyP, H₂TPPS, and ZnTPPS) complexed with model DNAs (ctDNA and dGMP) have been investigated using steady-state absorption, circular dichroism (CD), and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Upon addition of ctDNA (or dGMP), larger hypochromism and red shifts are observed for H₂TMPyP and PdTMPyP compared to the other samples. The steady-state measurements have suggested that the binding modes of H₂TMPyP-ctDNA and PdTMPyP-ctDNA are partial intercalation and full intercalation, respectively, while ZnTMPyP-ctDNA shows outside groove binding. No significant interaction was observed between both H₂TPPS and ZnTPPS with two kinds of DNA. Upon excitation of the porphyrins into the higher excited state S₂ (Soret band), the appearance of the transient absorption from ∼500 to ∼620 nm at about 0.05 ps in H₂TMPyP-ctDNA, H₂TMPyP-dGMP, and PdTMPyP-dGMP indicates the occurrence of the electron transfer (ET) from guanine to H₂TMPyP and PdTMPyP. The forward ET are extremely fast (k_f ≥ 1.0 × 10¹³ s^-1), and the backward ET rates are ∼5.6 × 10¹² and ∼4.0 × 10¹² s^-1, respectively. The complexation with DNA may lead to the shorter lifetime of the fluorescence of H₂TMPyP and PdTMPyP.

Nanostructured Graphene Oxide Dots: Synthesis, Characterization, Photoinduced Electron Transfer Studies, and Detection of Explosives/Biomolecules

Herein, we report the preparation of graphene oxide dots (GO dots) by fine-tuning the carbonization degree of citric acid. The structure of GO dots was characterized by absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, as well as high-resolution scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analyses. The typical particle size of the GO dots was 42 nm. The fluorescent characteristics of the GO dots were analyzed by fluorescence spectroscopy. Once excited at 360 nm, the GO dots were fluorescent in the range of 450-550 nm, which was dependent on the excitation wavelength. Further, GO dots were effectively utilized for multifarious applications such as photoinduced electron transfer and detection of explosives and biomolecules. The emission property of GO dots was competently quenched by viologens, picric acid (PA), and bilirubin (BR). The mechanism of quenching by viologens and explosives/biomolecules was found to be due to photoinduced electron transfer and the internal filter effect, respectively. Intriguingly, the detection minimum of PA is in the nanomolar level. Toward commercialization, the economic test strips have also been introduced for the identification of PA. Furthermore, the GO dots have been applied as an efficient luminescent bioprobe for a selective and perceptive finding of BR.

Concerning correct and incorrect assignments of Soret (S2-S0) fluorescence in porphyrinoids: a short critical review

The relaxation dynamics of electronically excited porphyrinoids are often measured by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence methods. The unusual occurrence of measurable fluorescence from an upper excited singlet state (often identified as the second electronically excited singlet state, S2) of some porphyrins has, in recent years, prompted a spate of mis-assignments of observed emission from other porphyrinoids excited in the near UV-violet regions of the spectrum. The criteria for correctly assigning fluorescence to a Soret excited state are reviewed. Questionable and mis-assigned reports are identified.
