Micellar control of the photooxidation pathways of 10-methyl phenothiazine: electron versus energy transfer mechanisms

A Simple Live Cell Imaging "Turn-On" Fluorescence Probe for the Selective and Sensitive Detection of Aqueous Hg2+ Ions

A simple, efficient, and reversible fluorescent sensor probe, PBA (2,6-dimethyl pyrone barbituric acid conjugate), comprised of a pro-aromatic donor conjugated with a barbituric acid, was developed for the detection of highly toxic mercuric ions. The probe showed high selectivity and "Turn-On" fluorescence response towards Hg2+ among various metal cations such as Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Ba2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+, in both homogeneous and microheterogeneous micelle medium sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). The binding stoichiometry, limit of detection (LOD), and binding constant for the PBA-Hg complex were determined. The mechanism of binding was ascertained using the N,N'-dimethylbarbituric acid conjugate of 2,6-dimethylpyran (PDMBA), where no binding interaction by deprotonation is possible. In the presence of cysteamine hydrochloride and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), the complexation of Hg2+ with PBA was demonstrated to be reversible, indicating its potential for the development of reusable sensors. Moreover, the practical applicability of PBA in monitoring Hg2+ in living cells was also evaluated.

On the mechanism of visible-light sensitized photosulfoxidation of toluidine blue O

We report on the formation of toluidine blue O (TBO) sulfoxide by a self-sensitized photooxidation of TBO. Here, the photosulfoxidation process was studied by mass spectrometry (MS) and discussed in the context of photodemethylation processes which both contribute to TBO consumption over time. Analysis of solvent effects with D2O, H2O, and CH3CN along with product yields and MS fragmentation patterns provided mechanistic insight into TBO sulfoxide's formation. The formation of TBO sulfoxide is minor and detectable up to 12% after irradiation of 3 h. The photosulfoxidation process is dependent on oxygen wherein instead of a type II (singlet oxygen, 1O2) reaction, a type I reaction involving TBO to reach the TBO sulfoxide is consistent with the results. Density functional theory results point to the formation of the TBO sulfoxide by the oxidation of TBO via transiently formed peroxyl radical or thiadioxirane intermediates. We discover that the TBO photosulfoxidation arises competitively with TBO photodemethylation with the latter leading to formaldehyde formation.

Effects of the Chalcogenide Identity in N‐Aryl Phenochalcogenazine Photoredox Catalysts

Phenochalcogenazines such as phenoxazines and phenothiazines have been widely employed as photoredox catalysts (PCs) in small molecule and polymer synthesis. However, the effect of the chalcogenide in these catalysts has not been fully investigated. In this work, a series of four phenochalcogenazines is synthesized to understand how the chalcogenide impacts catalyst properties and performance. Increasing the size of the chalcogenide is found to distort the PC structure, ultimately impacting the properties of each PC. For example, larger chalcogenides destabilize the PC radical cation, possibly resulting in catalyst degradation. In addition, PCs with larger chalcogenides experience increased reorganization during electron transfer, leading to slower electron transfer. Ultimately, catalyst performance is evaluated in organocatalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization and a photooxidation reaction for C(sp²)−N coupling. Results from these experiments highlight that a balance of PC properties is most beneficial for catalysis, including a long‐lived excited state, a stable radical cation, and a low reorganization energy.

SET and HAT/PCET acid-mediated oxidation processes in helical shaped fused bis-phenothiazines

Helical shaped fused bis-phenothiazines 1-9 have been prepared and their red-ox behaviour quantitatively studied. Helicene radical cations (Hel.+ ) can be obtained either by UV-irradiation in the presence of PhCl or by chemical oxidation. The latter process is extremely sensitive to the presence of acids in the medium with molecular oxygen becoming a good single electron transfer (SET) oxidant. The reaction of hydroxy substituted helicenes 5-9 with peroxyl radicals (ROO. ) occurs with a 'classical' HAT process giving HelO. radicals with kinetics depending upon the substitution pattern of the aromatic rings. In the presence of acetic acid, a fast medium-promoted proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process takes place with formation of HelO. radicals possibly also via a helicene radical cation intermediate. Remarkably, also helicenes 1-4, lacking phenoxyl groups, in the presence of acetic acid react with peroxyl radicals through a medium-promoted PCET mechanism with formation of the radical cations Hel.+ . Along with the synthesis, EPR studies of radicals and radical cations, BDE of Hel-OH group (BDEOH ), and kinetic constants (kinh ) of the reactions with ROO. species of helicenes 1-9 have been measured and calculated to afford a complete rationalization of the redox behaviour of these appealing chiral compounds.

A simple cost effective carbazole–thiobarbituric acid conjugate as a ratiometric fluorescent probe for detection of mercury(ii) ions in aqueous medium

A multimode ratiometric Hg²⁺ selective chemosensor based on a carbazole–thiobarbituric acid conjugate was developed. It responds to the presence of Hg²⁺ by colorimetry and by fluorescence. The sensor action is demonstrated in both aqueous homogeneous or microheterogeneous media.
