Abstract
Near-infrared two-photon absorption and excited state dynamics of a fluorescent diarylethene (fDAE) derivative were investigated by time-resolved absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies. Prescreening with quantum chemical calculation predicted that a derivative with methylthienyl groups (mt-fDAE) in the closed-ring isomer has a two-photon absorption cross-section larger than 1000 GM, which was experimentally verified by Z-scan measurements and excitation power dependence in transient absorption. Comparison of transient absorption spectra under one-photon and simultaneous two-photon excitation conditions revealed that the closed-ring isomer of mt-fDAE populated into higher excited states deactivates following three pathways on a timescale of ca. 200 fs: (i) the cycloreversion reaction more efficient than that by the one-photon process, (ii) internal conversion into the S1 state, and (iii) relaxation into a lower state (S1' state) different from the S1 state. Time-resolved fluorescence measurements demonstrated that this S1' state is relaxed to the S1 state with the large emission probability. These findings obtained in the present work contribute to extension of the ON-OFF switching capability of fDAE to the biological window and application to super-resolution fluorescence imaging in a two-photon manner.

Abstract
Diarylethene molecular photoswitches hold great fascination as optical information materials due to their unique bistability and exceptional reversible photoswitching properties. Conventional diarylethenes, however, rely on UV light for ring-closure reactions, typically with modest yields. For practical application, diarylethenes driven by visible lights are preferred but achieving high ring-closure reaction yield remains a significant challenge. Herein, we synthesized a novel all-visible-light-driven photoswitch, TPAP-DTE, by facilely endcapping the dithienylethene (DTE) core with triphenylamine phenyl (TPAP) groups. Owing to the electron-donating conjugation effect of TPAP, the open-form TPAP-DTE responds strongly to short-wavelength visible lights with considerable photocyclization quantum yields and molar absorption coefficient. Upon 405 nm visible-light irradiation, TPAP-DTE achieves a ring-closure reaction yield exceeding 96.3 % (confirmed by both nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography). Its ring-opening reaction yield is 100 % upon irradiation with long-wavelength visible light. TPAP-DTE could be regarded as a bidirectional "quasi"-quantitative conversion molecular switch. Furthermore, TPAP-DTE exhibits robust fatigue resistance over 100 full photoswitching cycles and great anti-aging property under 85 °C and 85 % humidity for at least 1000 h. Consequently, its rewritable QR-code, multilevel data storage, and anti-counterfeiting/encryption applications are successfully demonstrated exclusively using visible lights, positioning TPAP-DTE as a highly promising medium for information recording.

Abstract
Materials with phototunable full-color circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) have a large storage density, high-security level, and enormous prospects in the field of information encryption and decryption. In this work, device-friendly solid films with color tunability are prepared by constructing Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) platforms with chiral donors and achiral molecular switches in liquid crystal photonic capsules (LCPCs). These LCPCs exhibit photoswitchable CPL from initial blue emission to RGB trichromatic signals under UV irradiation due to the synergistic effect of energy and chirality transfer and show strong time dependence because of the different FRET efficiencies at each time node. Based on these phototunable CPL and time response characteristics, the concept of multilevel data encryption by using LCPC films is demonstrated.

Abstract
Nucleosidic and oligonucleotidic diarylethenes (DAEs) are an emerging class of photochromes with high application potential. However, their further development is hampered by the poor understanding of how the chemical structure modulates the photochromic properties. Here we synthesized 26 systematically varied deoxyuridine- and deoxycytidine-derived DAEs and analyzed reaction quantum yields, composition of the photostationary states, thermal and photochemical stability, and reversibility. This analysis identified two high-performance photoswitches with near-quantitative, fully reversible back-and-forth switching and no detectable thermal or photochemical deterioration. When incorporated into an oligonucleotide with the sequence of a promotor, the nucleotides maintained their photochromism and allowed the modulation of the transcription activity of T7 RNA polymerase with an up to 2.4-fold turn-off factor, demonstrating the potential for optochemical control of biological processes.

Abstract
Photon upconversion based on triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA-UC) has attracted great attention due to its remarkable features including the high upconversion quantum yield, low threshold, and flexible combination of sensitizer and annihilator. Endowing TTA-UC with responsiveness will offer additional application dimensions; however, it is a challenge to develop annihilators with responsive features in the excited triplet state. Here we demonstrate the synthesis and photophysical behaviors of photofluorochromic annihilators derived from fluorescent diarylethenes. A series of turn-on mode fluorescent diarylethenes based on 1,2-bis(2-ethyl-1-benzothiophen-1,1-dioxide-3-yl)perfuorocyclopentene were synthesized, and their photochromism and photofluorochromism behaviors were thoroughly investigated. When sensitized by near-infrared ruthenium phthalocyanine, TTA-UC could be observed under excitation of 730 nm, accompanied by upconverted emission ranging from 500 to 700 nm. Because of the photoresponsive properties of the annihilators, TTA-UC can be switched between "on" and "off" by alternating irradiation of ultraviolet and visible light.

Abstract
Diarylethene derivatives having benzothiophene S,S-dioxide groups undergo turn-on mode fluorescence photoswitching. For the practical application to super-resolution fluorescence microscopy, photoswitchable fluorescent molecules are desired to be resistant against photodegradation. Here we synthesized turn-on mode fluorescent diarylethenes having electron-withdrawing (trifluoromethyl or nitro) or electron-donating (methyl, methoxy, or dimethylamino) substituents on phenyl rings at 6- and 6'-positions of the benzothiophene S,S-dioxide groups and examined the effect of the substituents on the photoswitchiing performance. The derivatives having electron-donating substituents showed significant bathochromic shifts of the absorption and fluorescence spectra. The cycloreversion quantum yield was increased by introducing electron-withdrawing substituents, while it was decreased by the electron-donating ones. Introduction of electron-donating substituents was found to remarkably improve the fatigue resistance of the fluorescent diarylethene under continuous ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Such highly fatigue-resistant fluorescent diarylethenes are useful for super-resolution fluorescence imaging or single-molecule fluorescence tracking.

Abstract
Diarylethene photoswitches in supramolecular gels constitute a system where the writing and erasing of multicolored fluorescent information is easily achieved.
A facile cocktail approach implying the mixing of diarylethene (DAE) photoswitches and low molecular weight gelators (LMWG) is presented. The photoresponsive gels exhibit multicolored emission that can be precisely controlled by different light exposure schemes (wavelength and dose), applicable for fluorescence patterning/writing. Including also a blue-emitting fluorophore allows for tri-chromatic color tuning of the emission via multistep energy transfer reactions, which in turn yields a non-linear response between the emission spectra and the light dose. This feature is highly desired in data security and anti-counterfeiting contexts. The information written in the gels can be conveniently erased by light, mass diffusion, or shaking; the latter being due to the thixotropic properties of the gels.

Abstract
The one- and two-photon cycloreversion reactions of a fluorescent diarylethene derivative with oxidized benzothiophene moieties were investigated by means of ultrafast laser spectroscopy. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy under the one-photon excitation condition revealed that the excited closed-ring isomer is simply deactivated into the initial ground state with a time constant of 2.6 ns without remarkable cycloreversion, the results of which are consistent with the very low cycloreversion reaction yield (<10-5) under steady-state light irradiation. On the other hand, an efficient cycloreversion reaction was observed under irradiation with a picosecond laser pulse at 532 nm. The excitation intensity dependence of the cycloreversion reaction indicates that a highly excited state attained by the stepwise two-photon absorption is responsible for the marked increase of the cycloreversion reaction, and the quantum yield at the highly excited state was estimated to be 0.018 from quantitative analysis, indicating that the reaction is enhanced by a factor of >1800.

Abstract
sEDA, pEDA, and cSAR descriptors of the substituent effect were determined for >30 monosubstituted benzenes in the first excited singlet S1 state at the LC-ωB97XD/aug-cc-pVTZ level. It was found that in the S1 state, the σ- and π-valence electrons are a bit less and a bit more affected, respectively, than in the S0 state, but basically, the effect in both states remains the same. In the S0 and S1 states, the d(C-X) distances to the substituent's first atom and the ring perimeter correlate with the sEDA and pEDA in the appropriate states, respectively. The energies and the gap of the frontier orbitals in the two states are linearly correlated and for the HOMO(S1), LUMO(S1), and HOMO(S1)-LUMO(S1) gap correlate also with the pEDA(S1) and cSAR(S1) descriptors. In all studied correlations, three similar groups of substituents can be distinguished, for which correlations (i) are very good, (ii) deviate slightly, and (iii) deviate significantly. Comparison of the shape of the HOMO(S0) and HOMO(S1) orbitals shows that for case (i) HOMO orbitals exhibit almost perfect antisymmetry against the benzene plane, for case (ii) the antisymmetry of HOMO in one of the states is either perturbed or changed, and for case (iii) one HOMO state has σ-character.

Abstract
Photoswitching and fluorescent properties of sulfone derivatives of 1,2-bis(2-alkyl-4-methyl-5-phenyl-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene, 1–5, having methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, i-propyl, and i-butyl substituents at the reactive carbons (2- and 2′-positions) of the thiophene 1,1-dioxide rings were studied. Diarylethenes 1–5 underwent isomerization reactions between open-ring and closed-ring forms upon alternate irradiation with ultraviolet (UV) and visible light and showed fluorescence in the closed-ring forms. The alkyl substitution at the reactive carbons affects the fluorescent property of the closed-ring isomers. The closed-ring isomers 2b–5b with ethyl, n-propyl, i-propyl, and i-butyl substituents show higher fluorescence quantum yields than 1b with methyl substituents. In polar solvents, the fluorescence quantum yield of 1b markedly decreases, while 2b–5b maintain the relatively high fluorescence quantum yields. Although the cycloreversion quantum yields of the derivatives with methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, and i-propyl substituents are quite low and in the order of 10−5, introduction of i-butyl substituents was found to increase the yield up to the order of 10−3. These results indicate that appropriate alkyl substitution at the reactive carbons is indispensable for properly controlling the photoswitching and fluorescent properties of the photoswitchable fluorescent diarylethenes, which are potentially applicable to super-resolution fluorescence microscopies.

Abstract
A modular assembly of water-soluble diarylethenes (DAEs), applicable as biomarkers for optical nanoscopy, is reported. Reversibly photoswitchable 1,2-bis(2-alkyl-6-phenyl-1-benzothiophene-1,1-dioxide-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentenes possessing a fluorescent "closed" form were decorated with one or two methoxy group(s) attached to the para-position(s) of phenyl ring(s) and two, four, or eight carboxylic acid groups. Antibody conjugates of these DAEs feature low aggregation, efficient photoswitching in aqueous buffers, specific staining of cellular structures, and photophysical properties (high emission efficiencies and low cycloreversion quantum yields) enabling their application in superresolution microscopy. Images of tubulin, vimentin, and nuclear pore complexes are presented. The superresolution images can also be acquired by using solely 488 nm light without additional photoactivation with UV light. These DAEs exhibit reversible photoswitching without requiring any additives to the imaging media and open new paths toward the modular design of fluorescent dyes for bioimaging with optical superresolution.

Abstract
Reversibly photoswitchable 1,2‐bis(2‐ethyl‐6‐phenyl‐1‐benzothiophene‐1,1‐dioxide‐3‐yl)perfluorocyclopentenes (EBT) having fluorescent “closed” forms were decorated with four or eight carboxylic groups and attached to antibodies. Low aggregation, efficient photoswitching in aqueous buffers, specific staining of cellular structures, and good photophysical properties were demonstrated. Alternating light pulses of UV and blue light induce numerous reversible photochemical transformations between two stables states with distinct structures. Using relatively low light intensities, EBTs were applied in biology‐related super‐resolution microscopy based on the reversible saturable (switchable) optical linear fluorescence transitions (RESOLFT) and demonstrated optical resolution of 75 nm.

Abstract
The in situ imaging of soft matter is of paramount importance for a detailed understanding of functionality on the nanoscopic scale. Although super-resolution fluorescence microscopy methods with their unprecedented imaging capabilities have revolutionized research in the life sciences, this potential has been far less exploited in materials science. One of the main obstacles for a more universal application of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy methods is the limitation of readily available suitable dyes to overcome the diffraction limit. Here, we report a novel diarylethene-based photoswitch with a highly fluorescent closed and a nonfluorescent open form. Its photophysical properties, switching behavior, and high photostability make the dye an ideal candidate for photoactivation localization microscopy (PALM). It is capable of resolving apolar structures with an accuracy far beyond the diffraction limit of optical light in cylindrical micelles formed by amphiphilic block copolymers.

Abstract
Photoswitchable molecules and nanoparticles constitute superior biosensors for a wide range of industrial, research and biomedical applications. Rendered reversible by spontaneous or deterministic means, such probes facilitate many of the techniques in fluorescence microscopy that surpass the optical resolution dictated by diffraction. Here we have devised a family of photoswitchable quantum dots (psQDs) in which the semiconductor core functions as a fluorescence donor in Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), and multiple photochromic diheteroarylethene groups function as acceptors upon activation by ultraviolet light. The QDs were coated with a polymer bearing photochromic groups attached via linkers of different length. Despite the resulting nominal differences in donor-acceptor separation and anticipated FRET efficiencies, the maximum quenching of all psQD preparations was 38±2%. This result was attributable to the large ultraviolet absorption cross-section of the QDs, leading to preferential cycloreversion of photochromic groups situated closer to the nanoparticle surface and/or with a more favourable orientation.
