Research Progress and Application of Polyimide-Based Nanocomposites

Polyimide (PI) is one of the most dominant engineering plastics with excellent thermal, mechanical, chemical stability and dielectric performance. Further improving the versatility of PIs is of great significance, broadening their application prospects. Thus, integrating functional nanofillers can finely tune the individual characteristic to a certain extent as required by the function. Integrating the two complementary benefits, PI-based composites strongly expand applications, such as aerospace, microelectronic devices, separation membranes, catalysis, and sensors. Here, from the perspective of system science, the recent studies of PI-based composites for molecular design, manufacturing process, combination methods, and the relevant applications are reviewed, more relevantly on the mechanism underlying the phenomena. Additionally, a systematic summary of the current challenges and further directions for PI nanocomposites is presented. Hence, the review will pave the way for future studies.

Comparative Studies on Carbon Paste Electrode Modified with Electroactive Polyamic Acid and Corresponding Polyimide without/with Attached Sulfonated Group for Electrochemical Sensing of Ascorbic Acid

In this study, electroactive poly (amic acid) (EPAA) and corresponding polyimide (EPI) without or with a sulfonated group (i.e., S-EPAA, and S-EPI) were prepared and applied in electrochemical sensing of ascorbic acid (AA). The electroactive polymers (EAPs) containing EPAA/EPI and S-EPAA/S-EPI were synthesized by using an amine-capped aniline trimer (ACAT) and sulfonated amine-capped aniline trimer (S-ACAT) as an electroactive segment that controlled the redox capability and influenced the degree of sensitivity of the EAPs towards AA. Characterization of the as-prepared EAPs was identified by FTIR spectra. The redox capability of the EAPs was investigated by electrochemical cyclic voltammetric studies. It should be noted that the redox capability of the EAPs was found to show the following trend: S-EPAA > S-EPI > EPAA > EPI. For the electrochemical sensing studies, a sensor constructed from an S-EPAA-modified carbon paste electrode (CPE) demonstrated 2-fold, 1.27-fold, and 1.35-fold higher electro-catalytic activity towards the oxidation of AA, compared to those constructed using a bare CPE, S-EPI-, and EPI/EPAA-modified CPE, respectively. The higher redox capability of S-EPAA-modified CPE exhibited a good electrochemical response towards AA at a low oxidative potential, with good stability and selectivity. Moreover, an electrochemical sensor constructed from S-EPAA-modified CPE was found to reveal better selectivity for a tertiary mixture of AA/DA/UA, as compared to that of EPI-modified, EPAA-modified and S-EPI-modified CPE, based on a series of differential pulse voltammograms.

Amphiphilic Peptoid-Directed Assembly of Oligoanilines into Highly Crystalline Conducting Nanotubes

It is reported herein the synthesis of a novel amphiphilic diblock peptoid bearing a terminal conjugated oligoaniline and its self-assembly into small-diameter (D ≈ 35 nm) crystalline nanotubes with high aspect ratios (>30). It is shown that both tetraaniline (TANI)-peptoid and bianiline (BANI)-peptoid triblock molecules self-assemble in solution to form rugged highly crystalline nanotubes that are very stable to protonic acid doping and de-doping processes. The similarity of the crystalline tubular structure of the nanotube assemblies revealed by electron microscopy imaging, and X-ray diffraction analysis of the nanotube assemblies of TANI-functionalized peptoids and nonfunctionalized peptoids showed that the peptoid is an efficient ordered structure directing motif for conjugated oligomers. Films of doped TANI-peptoid nanotubes has a dc conductivity of ca. 95 mS cm^-1 , while the thin films of doped un-assembled TANI-peptoids show a factor of 5.6 lower conductivity, demonstrating impact of the favorable crystalline ordering of the assemblies on electrical transport. These results demonstrate that peptoid-directed supramolecular assembly of tethered π-conjugated oligo(aniline) exemplify a novel general strategy for creating rugged ordered and complex nanostructures that have useful electronic and optoelectronic properties.

Comparative Studies of CPEs Modified with Distinctive Metal Nanoparticle-Decorated Electroactive Polyimide for the Detection of UA

In this present work, an electrochemical sensor was developed for the sensing of uric acid (UA). The sensor was based on a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with electroactive polyimide (EPI) synthesized using aniline tetramer (ACAT) decorated with reduced nanoparticles (NPs) of Au, Pt, and Ag. The initial step involved the preparation and characterization of ACAT. Subsequently, the ACAT-based EPI synthesis was performed by chemical imidization of its precursors 4,4′-(4.4′-isopropylidene-diphenoxy) bis (phthalic anhydride) BPADA and ACAT. Then, EPI was doped with distinctive particles of Ag, Pt and Au, and the doped EPIs were abbreviated as EPIS, EPIP and EPIG, respectively. Their structures were characterized by XRD, XPS, and TEM, and the electrochemical properties were determined by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. Among these evaluated sensors, EPI with Au NPs turned out the best with a sensitivity of 1.53 uA uM⁻¹ UA, a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.78 uM, and a linear detection range (LDR) of 5–50 uM UA at a low potential value of 310 mV. Additionally, differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) analysis showed that the EPIG sensor showed the best selectivity for a tertiary mixture of UA, dopamine (DA), and ascorbic acid (AA) as compared to EPIP and EPIS.

A novel Au/electroactive poly(amic acid) composite as an effective catalyst for p-nitrophenol reduction

A Au/electroactive poly(amic acid) (Au/EPAA) composite was synthesized and characterized, and its catalytic ability was evaluated. EPAA was synthesized via oxidative coupling polymerization and Au nanoparticles were anchored to the amino and carboxyl groups. The Au/EPAA composite was characterized via X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, which confirmed that the Au nanoparticles were well dispersed on the EPAA surface. p-Nitrophenol was reduced to p-aminophenol within 5 min at room temperature, with a rate constant of 0.84 min⁻¹. Cycling measurements showed that the Au/EPAA composite achieved higher than 92% conversion. The Au/EPAA composite showed excellent performance and stability as a catalyst for the reduction of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol.

Application of electroactive Au/aniline tetramer-graphene oxide composites as a highly efficient reusable catalyst

This study proposes a cost-effective, energy-saving, and green process that uses π-π interactions to modify graphene oxide (GO), and the conjugate structure of aniline tetramer (AT) to enhance the dispersion of GO. Au/aniline tetramer-graphene oxide (Au/ATGO) composites were synthesized and applied as a catalyst in this study. The adsorption of AT on GO, via π-π interaction, formed ATGO composites. Subsequently, the amine group on ATGO was stably anchored on Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) to form Au/ATGO composites. The Au/ATGO composites were characterized and the electroactive properties determined by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The Au/ATGO composites showed excellent performance and stability as catalysts when applied for the reduction of nitrophenol to aminophenol within 225 s and the rate constant was 0.02 s-1. The activation energy for the reduction of 4-NP and 2-NP was 48.10 and 68.71 kJ mol-1, respectively. Following a recycling test repeated 20 times, the Au/ATGO composites maintained a conversion rate higher than 94%.

A Novel Electroactive Imide Oligomer and Its Application in Anticorrosion Coating

A novel aniline tetramer (AT) capped electroactive imide oligomer (EIO) for metal corrosion protection was successfully synthesized in this study. The chemical structure of the EIO was characterized by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, the redox behavior of EIO was identified using electrochemical cyclic voltammetry studies. An EIO coated on a cold-rolled steel (CRS) electrode was found to possess superior corrosion resistance to polyimide (PI) on a series of electrochemical corrosion measurements in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution over an extended period (30 days). The mechanism for the advanced corrosion protection of the PI coating on the CRS electrode could be attributed to the redox catalytic capabilities of the AT units present in the EIO. These capabilities may induce the formation of passive metal oxide layers on the CRS electrode. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to analyze the surface condition of the CRS after the corrosion test. EIO- and PI-coated electrodes were identified by a series of electrochemical measurements, including corrosion potential (E_corr), polarization resistance (R_p), and corrosion current (I_corr) measurements, along with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).

A Novel Application of Electroactive Polyimide Doped with Gold Nanoparticles: As a Chemiresistor Sensor for Hydrogen Sulfide Gas

This research paper presents a new application of electroactive polyimide doped with gold nanoparticles (PI/AuNPs) as a chemiresistor sensor for detecting hydrogen sulfide gas. The synthesis of PI/AuNPs was done in a simple 3-step process of polymerization using the as prepared amine-capped aniline trimer (ACAT), followed by imidization, and doping. Spectral analyses via FTIR, LC-MS and ¹H-NMR confirmed the formation of amine-capped aniline trimer with a MW of 288 g mol⁻¹. Comparison of ACAT, BSAA, and PI FTIR spectra showed successful polymerization of the last, while XRD validated the incorporation of metal nanoparticles onto the polymer matrix, showing characteristic diffraction peaks corresponding to gold. Furthermore, TEM, and FE-SEM revealed the presence of well-dispersed Au nanoparticles with an average diameter of about 60 nm. The electroactive PI/AuNPs-based sensor showed a sensitivity of 0.29% ppm⁻¹ H₂S at a linear concentration range of 50 to 300 ppm H₂S (r = 0.9777). The theoretical limit of detection was found at 0.142 ppm or 142 ppb H₂S gas. The sensor provided a stable response reading at an average response time of 43 ± 5 s, which was easily recovered after an average time of 99 ± 5 s. The sensor response was highly repeatable and reversible, with RSD values of 8.88%, and 8.60%, respectively. Compared with the performance of the conventional conducting polyaniline also doped with gold nanoparticles (PANI/AuNPs), the fabricated electroactive PI/AuNPs exhibited improved sensing performance making it a potential candidate in monitoring H₂S in the environment and for work-related safety.

Determination of ascorbic acid in pharmaceutical preparation and fruit juice using modified carbon paste electrode

Acrobic acid is key substance in the human metabolism and the rapid and accurate determination in food is of a great interest. Ascorbic acid is an electroactive compound, however poorly responded on the bare carbon paste electrodes. In this paper, brilliant cresyl blue and multi-walled carbon nanotubes were used for the modification of carbon paste electrode. Brilliant cresyl blue acts as a mediator improving the transition of electrons, whereas multiwalled carbon nanotubes increased the surface of the electrode. Both brilliant cresyl blue and multiwalled carbon nanotubes were added directly to the composite material. The electrochemical behavior of modified electode was determined in electrolyte at various pH, and the effect of the scan rate was also performed. It was shown that the electrochemical process on the surface of the modified carbon paste electrode was diffusion-controlled. The resulted modified carbon paste electrode showed a good electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of ascorbic acid at a reduced overpotential of +100 mV descreasing the risk of interferences. A linear response of the ascorbic acid oxidation current measured by the amperometry in the range of 0.1 - 350 µmol.L-1 was obtained applying the sensor for the standard solution. The limit of detection and limit of quantification was found to be 0.05 and 0.15 µmol.L-1, respectively. The novel method was applied for the determination of ascorbic acid in pharmaceutical vitamin preparation and fruit juice, and the results were in good agreement with the standard HPLC method. The presented modification of carbon paste electrode is suitable for the fast, sensitive and very accurate determination of ascorbic acid in fruit juices and pharmaceutical preparation.

An in-fiber integrated optofluidic device based on an optical fiber with an inner core

A new kind of optofluidic in-fiber integrated device based on a specially designed hollow optical fiber with an inner core is designed. The inlets and outlets are built by etching the surface of the optical fiber without damaging the inner core. A reaction region between the end of the fiber and a solid point obtained after melting is constructed. By injecting samples into the fiber, the liquids can form steady microflows and react in the region. Simultaneously, the emission from the chemiluminescence reaction can be detected from the remote end of the optical fiber through evanescent field coupling. The concentration of ascorbic acid (AA or vitamin C, Vc) is determined by the emission intensity of the reaction of Vc, H2O2, luminol, and K3Fe(CN)6 in the optical fiber. A linear sensing range of 0.1-3.0 mmol L(-1) for Vc is obtained. The emission intensity can be determined within 2 s at a total flow rate of 150 μL min(-1). Significantly, this work presents information for the in-fiber integrated optofluidic devices without spatial optical coupling.
