Abstract
Tunable and reconfigurable materials with autonomic shape transformation in response to the environment have emerged as one of the most promising approaches for a variety of biomedical applications, such as tissue engineering, biosensing, and in vivo biomedical devices. Currently, it is still quite challenging to fabricate soft, microscaled 3D shape-reconfigurable structures due to either complicated microfabrication or limited microscale photopolymerization-based printing approaches to enable adaptive shape transformation. Here, a one-step photo-cross-linking approach has been demonstrated to obtain a 3D-to-3D morphological transformable microhelix from a self-rolled hydrogel microsheet, resulting in chirality conversion. It was enabled by a custom-designed "hard" stripe/"soft" groove topography on the microsheets for introducing, which introduced both in-planar and out-of-planar anisotropies. Both experiment and simulation confirmed that a stripe/groove geometry can effectively control the 3D transformation by activating in-planar or/and out-of-planar mismatch stress within the microsheets, resulting in switching of the rolling direction between perpendicular/parallel to the length of the stripe. Furthermore, versatile 3D microconstructs with the ability to transform between two distinct 3D configurations have been achieved based on controlled rolling of microhelices, demonstrated as "windmill"-to-"T-cross" and "cylinder"-to-"scroll" transformations and dynamic blossoming of biomimetic orchids. In contrast to conventional 2D-to-3D micro-origami, we have successfully demonstrated an approach for fabricating microscale, all-soft-material-based constructs with autonomic 3D-to-3D structural transformation, which presents an opportunity for designing more complex hydrogel-based microrobotics.

Thermal responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) grafted chicken feather keratin prepared via surface initiated aqueous Cu(0)-mediated RDRP: Synthesis and properties. Int J Biol Macromol 2020; 153:364-372. Abstract
Poultry chicken feather keratin was extracted and then modified for the fabrication of keratin-graft-PNIPAM copolymers. The keratin was well extracted from feather fiber and powdered. Subsequently, it underwent the surficial functionalization process with initiator groups. After the study conducted full disproportionation of Cu(I)Br/Me6Tren into Cu(0) and Cu(II)Br2 in the solvent, surface initiated aqueous Cu(0)-mediated reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) was performed in a methanol/water mixture solvent. The reaction was performed rapidly and efficiently, during which over 100% graft rate was achieved at 60 min. After 6 h reaction, 200% graft rate could be achieved. High graft rate (up to 287%) was achieved, and graft rate could be regulated by controlling the reaction time and the addition of monomer. The fabricated keratin-g-PNIPAM exhibited a rough surface. As revealed from the results of thermal analysis, the thermal stability of keratin-g-PNIPAM was enhanced noticeably compared with the original keratin. Besides, grafted PNIPAM chains exhibited a higher glass transition temperature. The grafted keratin particles displayed enhanced hydrophilicity. Keratin-g-PNIPAMs exhibit a lower LCST comparing to homopolymer and the flocculation in hot water behavior could be controlled by regulating graft rate.

Abstract
Sharply thermo- and pH-responsive pentablock terpolymer with a core-shell-corona structure was prepared by RAFT polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide and methacrylic acid monomers using PEG-based benzoate-type of RAFT agent. The PEG-based RAFT agent could be easily synthesized by dihydroxyl-capped PEG with 4-cyano-4-(thiobenzoyl) sulfanylpentanoic acids, using esterification reaction. This pentablock terpolymer was characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR, and GPC. The PDI was obtained by GPC, indicating that the molecular weight distribution was narrow and the polymerization was well controlled. The thermo- and pH-responsive micellization of the pentablock terpolymer in aqueous solution was investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy technique, UV-vis transmittance, and TEM. The LCST of pentablock terpolymer increased (over 50 °C) compared to the NIPAM homopolymer (~32 °C), due to the incorporation of the hydrophilic PEG and PMA blocks in pentablock terpolymer (PNIPAM block as the core, PEG the block and the hydrophilic PMA block as the shell and the corona). Also, pH-dependent phase transition behavior shows at a pH value of about ~5.8, according to pKa of MAA. Thus, in acidic solution at room temperature, the pentablock terpolymer self-assembled to form core-shell-corona micelles, with the hydrophobic PMA block as the core, the PNIPAM block and the hydrophilic PEG block as the shell and the corona, respectively.

Abstract
This article describes the synthesis and characterization of a novel 'schizophrenic' diblock copolymer [poly(2-succinyloxyethyl methacrylate)-b-poly[(N-4-vinylbenzyl),N,N-diethylamine)]; PSEMA-b-PVEA] via reversible addition of fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization technique. The chemical structures of all samples as representatives were characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies. The molecular weights of PHEMA and PVEA segments were calculated to be 9770 and 12,630 gmol-1, respectively, from 1H NMR spectroscopy. The self-assembly behavior of the synthesized PSEMA-b-PVEA diblock copolymer was investigated by means of 1H NMR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation. The average sizes of the PSEMA-b-PVEA micelles at pHs 3.0, 6.0, and 10.0 were obtained to be 294, 237, and 201 nm, respectively, from DLS analysis. The zeta potential measurements at various pHs demonstrated that the synthesized PSEMA-b-PVEA diblock copolymer has zwitterionic properties, and the range of isoelectric point's (IEP's) was determined as 5.8-7.3. It is expected that the synthesized PSEMA-b-PVEA diblock copolymer considered as a prospective candidate in nanomedicine applications such as drug delivery, mainly due to its excellent 'schizophrenic' micellization behavior.

Abstract
Self-assembly and associated dynamic and reversible non-covalent interactions are the basis of protein biochemistry (e.g., protein folding) and development of sophisticated nanomaterial systems that can respond to and amplify biological signals. In this study, we report a systematic investigation of non-covalent interactions that affect the pH responsive behaviors and resulting supramolecular self-assembly of a series of ultra-pH sensitive (UPS) block copolymers. Increase of hydrophobic and π-π stacking interactions led to the decrease of pKa values. In contrast, enhancement of direct ionic binding between cationic ammonium groups and anionic counter ions gave rise to increased pKa. Moreover, hydration of hydrophobic surfaces and hydrogen bonding interactions may also play a role in the self-assembly process. The key parameters capable of controlling the subtle interplay of different non-covalent bonds in pH-triggered self-assembly of UPS copolymers are likely to offer molecular insights to understand other stimuli-responsive nanosystems. Selective and precise implementation of non-covalent interactions in stimuli-responsive self-assembly processes will provide powerful and versatile tools for the development of dynamic, complex nanostructures with predictable and tunable transitions.
