New Corrosion Inhibitors Based on Perylene Units in Epoxy Ester Resin Coatings

Four new compounds from perylene dianhydride were prepared and tested for their anti-corrosion properties. Dizinc salt of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid and dimagnesium salts of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid, 5,5′-(1,3,8,10-tetraoxo-1,3,8,10-tetrahydroanthra[2,1,9-def:6,5,10-d′e′f′] diisoquinoline-2,9-diyl) bis(2-hydroxybenzoic acid) and N,N′-bis[3,3′-(dimethylamino)propylamine]-3,4,9,10-perylenediimide were characterized by analytical methods (SEM, EDX, X-ray) and parameters used in the field of paints (density, oil number and critical volume concentrations of pigment). The pigments (in a pigment volume concentration series) were used to prepare paints also containing a perylene C26H14N2O4 (Compound I) derivative pigment plus inert titanium dioxide to maintain a constant concentration of solids in the paint film. A mixture containing zinc nitroisophthalate and both the perylene derivative and titanium dioxide served as the reference material. The paints were applied to steel panels in two layers with a ruler. The organic coatings were subjected to electrochemical measurements and accelerated cyclic corrosion tests. The highest corrosion resistance was found for the coating containing C24H8O8Mg2. Superior to the coating containing either C26H14N2O4 or the conventional corrosion inhibitor C8H5N06-Zn, this pigment type acted mainly by a mechanism based on the compound’s complexation capacity at the metallic surface/organic coating/corrosion medium interface. The organic coatings containing perylene acid salts also attained high mechanical resistance.

Coordination polymer-derived nano-sized zinc ferrite with excellent performance in nitro-explosive detection

Herein, a mixed metal coordination polymer, {(H₂pip)[Zn_1/3Fe_2/3(pydc-2,5)₂(H₂O)]·2H₂O} 1 {where H₂pip = piperazinediium and pydc-2,5 = pyridine-2,5-dicarboxylate}, was successfully synthesized using a hydrothermal technique. To confirm the structure and phase purity of 1, single crystals of an isomorphous pure Fe compound, {(H₂pip)[Fe(pydc-2,5)₂(H₂O)]·2H₂O} 1a, were synthesized based on similar synthetic conditions. Single crystal X-ray data of 1a confirmed the one-dimensional anionic metal-organic coordination polymer hydrogen bonded with protonated piprazine (piperazinediium) and lattice water molecules. The phase purity of 1 and 1a were confirmed via powder X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 was systematically characterized using IR, TGA, SEM, and EDX elemental mapping analysis. Compound 1 was used as a single source precursor for the preparation of nano-sized ZnFe₂O₄via thermal decomposition. The as-obtained ZnFe₂O₄ was fully characterized using PXRD, SEM, TEM, and EDX elemental mapping analysis. It was found that ZnFe₂O₄ was formed in its pure form with particle size in the nano-dimension. The aqueous dispersion of nano-sized ZnFe₂O₄ exhibits a strong emission at 402 nm upon excitation at 310 nm. This emissive property was employed for luminescence-based detection of nitroaromatic explosives in an aqueous medium through luminescence quenching for the first time. Importantly, selective detections have been observed for phenolic nitroaromatics based on differential luminescence quenching behaviour along with a detection limit of 57 ppb for 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) in water.

Cyano-bridged coordination polymer hydrogel-derived Sn-Fe binary oxide nanohybrids with structural diversity: from 3D, 2D, to 2D/1D and enhanced lithium-storage performance

Metal oxide nanohybrids with uniform dimensions and controlled architectures possess unique compositional and structural superiorities, and thus harbor promising potential for a series of applications in energy, catalysis, and sensing systems. Herein, we propose a facile, general, and scalable cyano-bridged coordination polymer hydrogel-derived thermal-oxidation route for the construction of main-group metal and transition-metal heterometallic oxide nanohybrids with controlled constituents and architectures. The formation of Sn-Fe binary oxide nanohybrids has been demonstrated as an example by using cyano-bridged Sn(iv)-Fe(ii) bimetallic coordination polymer hydrogels (i.e., SnCl4-K4Fe(CN)6 cyanogels, Sn-Fe cyanogels) as precursors. The physicochemical properties of Sn-Fe cyanogels with different Sn/Fe ratios have been systematically examined, and it is found that perfect Sn-Fe cyanogels without unbridged Sn(iv) or Fe(ii) can be formed with Sn/Fe ratios from 2 : 1 to 1 : 2. More importantly, the simple adjustment of Sn/Fe ratios in the Sn-Fe cyanogel precursors can realize flexible dimensional control of the Sn-Fe binary oxide nanohybrids, and 2D/1D SnO2-Fe2O3 hierarchitectures, 2D SnO2-Fe2O3 nanosheets, and 3D SnO2-Fe2O3 networks have been synthesized using the Sn-Fe 1 : 2, Sn-Fe 1 : 1, and Sn-Fe 2 : 1 cyanogels as precursors, respectively. To demonstrate their compositional/structural superiorities and potential applications, the lithium-storage utilization of the Sn-Fe binary oxide nanohybrids has been selected as an objective application, and the nanohybrids exhibit Sn/Fe ratio-dependent lithium-storage performance. As a representative example, the 2D/1D SnO2-Fe2O3 hierarchitectures manifest markedly enhanced Li-storage performance in terms of reversible capacities and cycling stability in comparison with their constituent units, i.e., bare SnO2 nanosheets and Fe2O3 nanorods. The proposed cyanogel-derived thermal-oxidation strategy could open up new opportunities for constructing heterometallic oxide nanohybrids, and the rationally designed metal oxide nanohybrids may find broad applications in energy, catalysis, and sensing fields by virtue of their structural and compositional features.
