Abstract
This work aimed to explore a novel protocol for selective reduction of the nitro group on the aromatic ring while remaining the ester group unaffected. In this study, NaBH4-FeCl2 was disclosed as a key reductant in the process. NaBH4-FeCl2-mediated reduction showed high chemoselectivity, gave the desired products in magnificent yield (up to 96%), and was applied to synthesize a key intermediate of vilazodone (an antidepressant drug) on a hectogram scale in a total yield of 81% (two steps). The protocol is practical, and capable of synthesis of a range of aromatic amines, especially those with ester substituted in the ring.

Abstract
We report an efficient catalytic protocol that chemoselectively reduces nitroarenes to arylamines, by using methylhydrazine as a reducing agent in combination with the easily synthesized and robust catalyst tris(N-heterocyclic thioamidate) Co(III) complex [Co(κS,N-tfmp2S)3], tfmp2S = 4-(trifluoromethyl)-pyrimidine-2-thiolate. A series of arylamines and heterocyclic amines were formed in excellent yields and chemoselectivity. High conversion yields of nitroarenes into the corresponding amines were observed by using polar protic solvents, such as MeOH and iPrOH. Among several hydrogen donors that were examined, methylhydrazine demonstrated the best performance. Preliminary mechanistic investigations, supported by UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and high-resolution mass spectrometry, suggest a cooperative action of methylhydrazine and [Co(κS,N-tfmp2S)3] via a coordination activation pathway that leads to the formation of a reduced cobalt species, responsible for the catalytic transformation. In general, the corresponding N-arylhydroxylamines were identified as the sole intermediates. Nevertheless, the corresponding nitrosoarenes can also be formed as intermediates, which, however, are rapidly transformed into the desired arylamines in the presence of methylhydrazine through a noncatalytic path. On the basis of the observed high chemoselectivity and yields, and the fast and clean reaction processes, the present catalytic system [Co(κS,N-tfmp2S)3]/MeNHNH2 shows promise for the efficient synthesis of aromatic amines that could find various industrial applications.

Abstract
In the present study, nickel nanoparticles (Ni-NPs) immobilized on graphene oxide-chitosan
(GO-Chit-Ni) have been synthesized and characterized as a catalyst for reduction of nitroarenes in water.
For this purpose, GO has been functionalized with chitosan (GO-Chit). Then, Ni-NPs were immobilized
on the surface of GO-Chit using a simple method. The GO-Chi-Ni nanocomposites were characterized
using Fourier Transforms Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Transmission Electron Microscopy
(TEM), X-Ray Diffraction Measurements (XRD), and Atomic Adsorption Spectrometry (AAS). The
GO-Chi-Ni nanoparticles demonstrated appropriate catalytic activity in reducing nitroarenes to aryl
amines in the existence of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) aqueous solution as a hydrogen source at
80oC. This catalytic system applies environmentally benign water as a solvent that is cheap, easily accessible,
non-toxic, non-volatile, non-flammable and thermally stable. This type of catalyst can be applied
several times with no considerable change in its performance.

Abstract
Graphene oxide was functionalized with chitosan for palladium immobilization (GO–Chit–Pd), which was used as an efficient catalyst for the reduction of aromatic nitro compounds using sodium borohydride in water. To achieve the best catalytic efficacy, various parameters such as temperature, solvent, mole ratio of hydrogen sources, and the amount of catalyst were optimized. The method has been applied to the reduction of a broad range of nitroarenes with different properties. The easy purification, convenient operation, environmental friendliness, and high product yields render this method viable for use. The nanocatalyst can be easily separated and efficiently recovered and reused for multiple cycles without appreciable loss in its catalytic activity.

Abstract
A very simple synthesis of bimetallic Pd-Pt-Fe3O4 nanoflake-shaped alloy nanoparticles (NPs) for cascade catalytic reactions such as dehydrogenation of ammonia-borane (AB) followed by the reduction of nitro compounds (R-NO2) to anilines or alkylamines (R-NH2) in methanol at ambient temperature is described. The Pd-Pt-Fe3O4 NPs were easily prepared via a solution phase hydrothermal method involving the simple one-pot coreduction of potassium tetrachloroplatinate (II) and palladium chloride (II) in polyvinylpyrrolidone with subsequent deposition on commercially available Fe3O4 NPs. The bimetallic Pd-Pt alloy NPs decorated on Fe3O4 NPs provide a unique synergistic effect for the catalysis of cascade dehydrogenation/reduction. Various nitroarene derivatives were reduced to anilines with very specific chemoselectivity in the presence of other reducible functional groups. The bimetallic Pd-Pt-Fe3O4 NPs provide a unique synergistic effect for the catalysis of cascade dehydrogenation/reduction. The nitro reduction proceeded in 5 min with nearly quantitative conversions and yields. Furthermore, the magnetically recyclable nanocatalysts were readily separated using an external magnet and reused up to 250 times without any loss of catalytic activity. A larger scale (10 mmol) reaction was also successfully performed with >99% yield. This efficient, recyclable Pd-Pt-Fe3O4 NPs system can therefore be repetitively utilized for the reduction of various nitro-containing compounds.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to understand and address the previous experimental results that showed the reduction of nitrobenzene to aniline prefers direct over indirect reaction pathways irrespective of the catalyst surface. Nitrobenzene to aniline conversion occurs via the hydroxyl amine intermediate (direct pathway) or via the azoxybenzene intermediate (indirect pathway). Through our computational study we calculated the spin polarized and dispersion corrected reaction energies and activation barriers corresponding to various reaction pathways for the reduction of nitrobenzene to aniline over a Ni catalyst surface. The adsorption behaviour of the substrate, nitrobenzene, on the catalyst surface was also considered and the energetically most preferable structural orientation was elucidated. Our study indicates that the parallel adsorption behaviour of the molecules over a catalyst surface is preferable over vertical adsorption behaviour. Based on the reaction energies and activation barrier of the various elementary steps involved in direct or indirect reaction pathways, we find that the direct reduction pathway of nitrobenzene over the Ni(111) catalyst surface is more favourable than the indirect reaction pathway.
