Abstract
A new coumarin based fluorescent switch PCEH is fabricated which displays high selective sensing towards Al3+ among other metal cations at physiological pH. On gradual addition of Al3+, PCEH shows a brilliant "turn-on" emission enhancement in MeOH/H2O (4/1, v/v) solution. This new fluorescent switch is proven to be a reversible probe by gradual addition of F- into the PCEH-Al3+ solution. Detection limit as well as binding constant values are calculated to be in the order of 10-9 M and 104 M-1 respectively. We have also explored its potential as a biomarker in the application of live cell imaging using breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231 cell).

Abstract
The recognition of toxic Al3+ in foods and biosystems has of great interest to researchers. Herein, a novel cyanobiphenyl-based chemosensor CATH (E)-N'-((4'-cyano-4-hydroxy-[1,1'-biphenyl]-3-yl)methylene)thiophene-2-carbohydrazide was fabricated and shown to recognize Al3+ in HEPES buffer:EtOH (90:10, v:v, pH = 7.4) by ''lighting-up'' fluorescence sensing. The CATH evidenced high sensitivity (LOD = 13.1 nM) and excellent selectivity to Al3+ over competing cations. The Job's plot, TOF-MS and theoretical computation studies were performed to probe the binding mechanism of Al3+ to CATH. Additionally; CATH was successfully utilized to practical applications and employed to recover of Al3+ from different food samples. More importantly, it was employed to intracellular Al3+ detection in living cells including THLE2 and HepG2.

Abstract
An AIE (aggregation induced emission) active probe DFP-AMQ was designed and synthesized as a hexa-coordinated N2O donor chelator for the selective sensing of Al3+ colorimetrically as well as fluorimetrically with a 27-fold fluorescence enhancement for CH3CN-H2O (9 : 1, v/v, pH 7.2, HEPES buffer). The fluorescence enhancement occurred through the blocking of ESIPT, chelation enhanced fluorescence effect (CHEF) arose, and as a result fluorescence enhancement was observed through 1 : 1 complexation with Al3+ ions. Detailed spectroscopic studies including UV-Vis, FTIR, 1H NMR, and HRMS studies were carried out to characterize the probable structure of DFP-AMQ including the complexation of DFP-AMQ with Al3+ ions. The spectrophotometric and spectrofluorimetric titrations revealed strong binding towards Al3+ and the K d values were obtained from UV-Vis (3.26 × 10-5 M-1) and fluorescence titration (2.02 × 10-5 M-1). The limit of detection of Al3+ by DFP-AMQ was 1.11 μM. The quantum yields of DFP-AMQ and [DFP-AMQ-Al]+ were calculated to be 0.008 and 0.211, respectively. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies showed that the sizes of the particles increased with increasing water percentage due to aggregation. SEM (scanning electron microscopy) studies revealed interesting morphological changes in microstructures in which DFP-AMQ demonstrated a rod-like shape, which was converted to a spherical-like shape in the presence of Al3+ and when DFP-AMQ aggregated in H2O it showed aggregated block-like shape. In the solid phase, DFP-AMQ with nitrate has no particular shape, but in the presence of acetate, it converts to stone-like shape. This probe (DFP-AMQ) could be employed for on-site Al3+ ion detection in the solid state.

Abstract
This paper proposes a strategy for fabricating new artificial light-harvesting systems (ALHSs) based on supramolecular multi-component metallogels. Al3+ was introduced into a solution of an acylhydrazone compound (L) in DMSO or DMF to form the L-Al3+ assembly. After adding Al3+ to the L solution, a noticeable blue shift appeared in the fluorescence spectra of L. Moreover, L could form a gel (L-B-gel) with 1,3:2,4-dibenzylidene sorbitol (B) in a DMSO-H2O binary solution. Finally, we obtained a multi-component metallogel (L-Al3+-B-gel) and successfully fabricated two ALHSs (L-Al3+/rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) and L-Al3+/rhodamine B (RhB)). In these systems, the L-Al3+ supramolecular assembly acts as the donor, while Rh6G and RhB act as acceptors. Additionally, we confirmed an energy-transfer process from the L-Al3+ component to Rh6G and RhB separately. The proposed fabrication strategy will facilitate the development of ALHSs.

Abstract
A thiophene substituted naphthyl hydrazone derivative NHT was synthesized using a one-step route for the detection of trivalent chromium (Cr3+). UV-visible absorption and emission spectra, density functional theory calculations as well as 1H NMR titration confirmed that the probe underwent a turn-off response via the chelation enhanced fluorescence quenching effect upon exposure to Cr3+ and the NHT-Cr3+ complex was formed at a 1:1 binding stoichiometry. NHT exhibited a fast response rate of 2.3 min in buffer solution and a relatively low limit of detection of 41 nM. In addition, the Schiff base chemosensor exhibited excellent selectivity with high affinity towards Cr3+ in the presence of other competing cations. Bioimaging of the probe in PC3 cells further demonstrated the potential real life application of the probe in detecting Cr3+.

Abstract
Herein, a novel Schiff base fluorescent probe NIQ based on naphthalimide and iso-quinoline units has been readily prepared for the selective detection of Al3+ ions. The obviously visible color changes and prominent fluorescence enhancement were observed upon the addition of Al3+ to NIQ, which could be attributed to the complexation of NIQ with Al3+ and thus leading to the inhibition of photo-induced electron transfer (PET) and the chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) progress. The limit of detection (LOD) was 52 nM that was far below the standard recommended by the WHO. Binding ratio (1:1) of NIQ with Al3+ ions was supported by Job's plot. The binding constant of NIQ for Al3+ were calculated to be 3.27 × 105 M-1 on the basis of benesi-Hildebrand plot. The plausible binding mechanism for NIQ towards Al3+ ions was evidenced by the density functional theory (DFT) and 1H NMR titration experiment. Furthermore, this "turn-on" probe NIQ has been successfully applied as a biomarker for imaging the Al3+ ions in living cells.

Abstract
A new Schiff base fluorescent probe NBP derived from the one-step condensation strategy of 2-butyl-6-hydroxy-1,3-dioxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-5-carbaldehyde and N-(2-(hydrazinecarbonyl)phenyl)benzamide was synthesized and characterized. NBP exhibited high selectivity toward Al3+ along with naked-eye color changes and prominent fluorescence enhancement. The limit of detection (LOD) of NBP toward Al3+ was detected to be 80 nM. The binding ratio of NBP with Al3+ ions was obtained as 1 : 2 on the basis of Job's plot with the association constant Ka value of 4.22 × 1010 M-1/2. The plausible complexation mechanism of NBP toward Al3+ ions was validated by the density functional theory (DFT) and IR spectrum. In addition, in situ formed "NBP + Al3+" could be utilized as the second sensor for selective recognition of F-via fluorescence quenching with a low detection limit (44 nM). Furthermore, the cell imaging experiments of probe NBP in HeLa cells have successfully demonstrated that NBP could serve as an indicator for monitoring Al3+ ions in living cells. On top of that, NBP could be used to prepare simple test paper strips for quickly and qualitatively detecting a trace amount of Al3+ ions in a visible manner.

Abstract
A novel quinoline fluorescent probe QNP ((E)-N'-(5-chloro-2-hydroxybenzylidene) quinoline-2-carbohydrazide) for detection of Al3+ ion was designed, synthesized and characterized. QNP displayed a high fluorescence enhancement in the presence of Al3+ ion in DMF:PBS (99:1, v/v) solution and the detection limit was as low as 1.25 μM with high selectivity and excellent sensitivity from 0 to 3 μM. The sensing ability of QNP towards Al3+ ion is attributed to the synergistic effect of PET and ICT. Furthermore, the binding stoichiometry between QNP and Al3+ ion is of 1:1 by Job's plot and mass spectrum, and the calculated binding constant is 4.29 × 108 M-1. The detection of Al3+ ion in water samples illustrates that QNP could be applied to the detection of practical samples in the environment. Bioimaging experiments on Hela cells, zebrafish and soybean root tissues demonstrate that it has potential application to investigate biological processes involving Al3+ ion within living cells. Abstract
An easy to make organic probe (hereafter called as R) possessing multiple ligating sites have been synthesized and characterized using spectral techniques. The probe exhibits selective and sensitive turn-on fluorescence response with Al(III) in aqueous dimethylformamide (DMF) (1:1 v/v) solution. Fluorescence titration experiment shows that the probe binds with Al(III) with a 1:1 stoichiometry and a binding constant of 6.6 × 104 M-1.The mode of coordination of R with Al(III) has been established suing 27Al and 1H NMR studies and the results suggest formation of an octahedral complex been them. The suggested point of attachment of R with Al(III) corroborates well with Density Functional Theory (DFT) optimized structure and Mulliken charges computed. Chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) is proposed as the mechanism of enhancement of fluorescence upon addition of Al(III) to R. The probe detects Al(III) in aqueous solution with a detection limit of 0.2 μM, which is much lower than the permissible limit of Al(III) set by the World Health Organization (WHO).The probe works in a wide pH range (4-11) and thus makes it a suitable candidate for environmental and biological applications. The fluorescence signals of R were used to construct an INHIBIT molecular logic gate. The confocal fluorescence microscope experiments show that R could be employed as a fluorescent probe for detecting Al(III) in living cells.

Abstract
A simple commercially available probe 8-hydroxyjulolidine-9-aldehyde (HJ) has been developed as a turn-on fluorescent probe specifically for Al3+ and characterized systemically. The probe HJ for Al3+ ion exhibits strong green fluorescence under ultraviolet light. The HJ acted as an OFF-ON-OFF type fluorescent probe for Al3+ and ATP in nearly 100% aqueous media. The 1:1 binding stoichiometry between probe and Al3+ has been established from Job's plot and HRMS studies. The limit of detection for Al3+ ion is found to be 5.75 × 10-8 M. The large association constant between HJ and Al3+ ion is 1.05 × 105 M-1. Detailed insights of probe-metal interaction mechanisms have been studied by the density functional theory (DFT) as well as the time dependent-DFT (TDDFT) calculations. Moreover, benefiting from the water solubility and biocompatibility of the probe HJ and its HJ-Al3+ complex, they have also been successfully applied to detect Al3+ and ATP by bioimaging in onion epidermal cells and adult zebrafish respectively.

Abstract
Aluminium-selective ion optical sensor based on covalently attached lumogallion methacrylate was synthesized and investigated in this study. Lumogallion based derivatives were copolymerized with various methacrylate monomers via a simple one step free radical polymerization to produce a "self-plasticized" copolymer. We demonstrate that covalently attached lumogallion moieties provide adequate functionality to the optical film thus achieving a very simple, one component sensing membrane. Fluorescence experiments demonstrated excellent sensitivity towards aluminium (III) ions with the detection limits found at 4.8 × 10-12 M. Furthermore, proposed sensor displays high selectivity towards aluminium over a number of biologically relevant cations. Moreover, the synthesized copolymer was used for the fabrication of nanoparticles that exhibit strong fluorescence upon contact with aluminium (III) ions. It is anticipated that lumogallion-based copolymers may form the basis for the development of highly sensitive and robust aluminium selective sensors capable of in situ measurements.

Abstract
A simple S-S (disulfide)-bridged dimeric Schiff base probe, L, has been designed, synthesized, and successfully characterized for the specific recognition of Al3+ and Fe2+ ions as fluorometric and colorimetric "turn-on" responses in a dimethylformamide (DMF)-H2O solvent mixture, respectively. The probe L and each metal ion bind through a 1:1 complex stoichiometry, and the plausible sensing mechanism is proposed based on the inhibition of the photoinduced electron transfer process (PET). The reversible chemosensor L showed high sensitivity toward Al3+ and Fe2+ ions, which was analyzed by fluorescence and UV-vis spectroscopy techniques up to nanomolar detection limits, 38.26 × 10-9 and 17.54 × 10-9 M, respectively. These experimental details were advocated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The practical utility of the chemosensor L was further demonstrated in electrochemical sensing, in vitro antimicrobial activity, molecular logic gate function, and quantification of the trace amount of Al3+ and Fe2+ ions in real water samples.

Abstract
Magnetic-fluorescent nanoparticles integrating imaging and therapeutic capabilities have unparalleled advantages in the biomedical applications. Apart from the dual ability of unique biomolecular fluorescent recognition and magnetic modes, the nanoparticle also endows combined effective therapies with high physiological stability, long-term imaging, rapid response time, and excellent circulation ability. Herein, we developed a carboxyl-functionalized magnetic nanoparticle that was further functionalized by polydopamine (PDA) and Schiff base ligand (3-aminopyridine-2-carboxaldehyde N(4)-methylthiosemicarbazone, HL) to form multilayered coating single nanoparticles (Fe3O4@PDA@HL). Our work showed that the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect could be produced by embedding In3+ into the Fe3O4@PDA@HL nanostructure, which offered a new opportunity for utilization as a fluorescent detection and therapeutic platform. Cellular fluorescent imaging experiments provided bacterial cell biodistribution, demonstrating their excellent luminescent performance, magnetic aggregation, and separation capability. We simultaneously confirmed that the synergistic antibacterial effect was closely related to both Fe3O4@PDA@HL and In3+, leading to the disruption of membrane integrity and the leakage of intracellular components, thus inducing bacterial death. This approach presented in our work could promote the development of future bioimaging and clinical therapy applications.

Abstract
Early detection of probes is very important for limiting toxic effects of various transition metal ions for example aluminum and zinc. Monitoring of these metal ions can be challenging via conventional methods since they are high cost instrumentations, time consuming and so on. We report facile preparation of a fluorescence probe containing biphenyl groups that effectively selective and superb sensitivity towards aluminum (III) and zinc (II) in neutral solutions without interference from each other and other ions. In neutral pH value, the probe FOB displayed the OFF-ON fluorescence enhancement at 464 nm and 512 nm toward aluminum (III) and zinc (II), respectively. The detection limit values of FOB for Al3+ and Zn2+ in neutral solutions were 1.27 and 1.02 nM, respectively and these values were significantly lower than permitted Al3+ and Zn2+ concentrations in drinking water determined by the World Health Organization (WHO) and European Water Quality. Also, fabricated cyano-biphenyl based probe is effective for sensing for aluminum (III) and zinc (II) in living human colon cancer cells even when employed at low concentrations (1.0 μM). Overall, this work allows us to obtain a great potential to be applied to detect Al3+ and Zn2+.

Abstract
A hydrazone-based N'1,N'3-bis((E)-4-(diethylamino)-2 -hydroxybenzylidene)isophthalohydrazide (NDHIPH), has been synthesized, characterized, and assessed for its highly selective and sensitive (limit of detection, 2.53 nM) response toward Al(III) via fluorescence enhancement in 95% aqueous medium. All experimental results of analytical studies are in good consonance with the theoretical studies performed. Further, this NDHIPH-Al(III) ensemble is used for selective and sensitive (12.15 nM) detection of explosive picric acid (PA) via fluorescence quenching. This reversible behavior of NDHIPH toward Al(III) and PA is used for the creation of a molecular logic gate.

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to design near-infrared (NIR) Al3+ fluorescent probes based on a Schiff base to extend their applications in biological systems. By combining benzo[h]quinoline unit and salicylaldehyde acylhydrazone, we designed two new Schiff base derivatives. According to theoretical simulations on previous experimental Al3+ probes, we obtained the appropriate theoretical approaches to describe the properties of these fluorescent probes. By employing such approaches on our newly designed molecules, it is found that the new molecules have high selectivity toward Al3+ and that their corresponding Al3+ complexes can emit NIR fluorescence. As a result, they are expected to be potential NIR Al3+ fluorescent probes.

Abstract
AbstractN’-(5-nitro-2-oxoindolin-3-ylidene) thiophene-2-carbohydrazide (NH) was successfully synthesized as a ligand, then grafted onto the surface of mesoporous silica SBA-15via an aminopropyl bridge. The successful grafting of ligand NH onto the hybrid nanomaterial (SBA-15/APTES-NH) was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy. On excitation at 276 and 370 nm, the ligand NH and the hybrid nanomaterial SBA-15/APTES-NH showed a strong and narrow emission peak centered at 533 nm. By dispersing SBA-15/APTES-NH in an aqueous solution containing metal ions, the resulting solid materials showed a higher binding of NH sensing site to Fe3+ ions as compared to the others with a quench of the emission intensity up to 84%. This result showed that the hybrid nanomaterial is a potential chemosensor that requires development for the detection of metal ions.

Abstract
A novel fluorescent chemosensor based on crown ether-acylhydrazone (L) was synthesized and characterized. The sensor L exhibited high selectivity and sensitive recognition towards Al3+ through a significant "turn-on" fluorescence response at 444 nm in methanol solution. While, other competitive ions had no such significant effects on the fluorescence emission. The associated spectra behavior might be attributed to the formation of 2:1 L-Al3+ complex and the proposed binding mode of L-Al3+ was demonstrated by the fluorescence titration profiles, Job's plot, ESI-MS spectrometry, 1H NMR titration and the IR analysis. Besides the high reproducibility of the optical signals, very low detection limit of 0.24 μM was calculated. The association constant (Ks) for L-Al3+ complex was about 5.56 × 109 ± 8.19 × 107 M-2. The results of various experiments showed the sensor L followed a turn-on mechanism via of the suppression of CN isomerization and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process and the activation of chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF). Theoretical calculations using DFT/B3LYP method was also used to get insight into the sensing mechanism and electronic structure of L. The sensor L could be conceived as an effective and practical fluorescent chemosensor for determination of Al3+.

Abstract
As an efficient turn-on fluorescent chemosensor for Al3+, a new coumarin derivative (CND) has been designed and synthesized by the condensation of 8-formyl-7-hydroxycoumarin with niacin hydrazide. The spectroscopic studies revealed that the sensor CND exhibited a remarkable fluorescence enhancement towards Al3+ with high selectivity and sensitivity in EtOH-HEPES (95:5, v/v, pH = 7.40), which was attributed to the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and CN isomerization mechanism. Fluorescence titration calculations data showed that the detection limit and the association constants of CND for Al3+ were found to be 2.51 × 10-7 M and 9.64 × 104 M-1, respectively. The results of experiments, including Job's plot, 1H NMR titration and ESI-MS, revealed that the stoichiometric binding between CND and Al3+ was 1:1. The investigations of the pH dependency of CND for Al3+ detection, and the cell imaging suggested the sensor CND could be promisingly applied for the recognition of Al3+ in biological cells.

Abstract
Developing high performance fluorescent chemo-sensors for in vitro and in vivo Al3+ detection is highly desirable, because Al3+ accumulation has been involved to various diseases. Herein, we report a highly selective and sensitive Schiff base fluorescent probe, H3L, based on 2-hydroxynaphthalene, which can recognize aluminum ions and exhibit an "off-on" mode with high selectivity in methanol solutions. The detection limit of the probe for Al3+ is as low as 10-7 M which was determined by fluorescent titration. The high selectivity and high sensitivity of H3L for Al3+ are attributed to the inhibition of ESIPT. Additionally, the distribution of intracellular Al3+ ions could be observed under confocal fluorescence microscopy. Moreover, we also applied H3L for in vivo detection of Al3+ ions in living zebrafish larvae.
