Development of supported intermetallic compounds: advancing the Frontiers of heterogeneous catalysis

Intermetallic compound (IMC) catalysts have garnered significant attention due to their unique surface and electronic properties, which can lead to enhanced catalytic performance compared to traditional monometallic catalysts. However, developing IMC materials as high-performance catalysts has been hindered by the inherent complexity of synthesizing nanoparticles with well-defined bulk and surface compositions. Achieving precise control over the composition of supported bimetallic IMC catalysts, especially those with high surface area and stability, has proven challenging. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent progress in developing supported IMC catalysts. We first examine the various synthetic approaches that have been explored to prepare supported IMC nanoparticles with phase-pure bulk structures and tailored surface compositions. Key factors influencing the formation kinetics and compositional control of these materials are discussed in detail. Then the strategies for manipulating the surface composition of supported IMCs are delved into. Applications of high-performance supported IMCs in important reactions such as selective hydrogenation, reforming, dehydrogenation, and deoxygenation are comprehensively reviewed, showcasing the unique advantages offered by these materials. Finally, the prevailing research challenges associated with supported IMCs are identified, including the need for a better understanding of the composition-property relationships and the development of scalable synthesis methods. The prospects for the practical implementation of these versatile catalysts in industrial processes are also highlighted, underscoring the importance of continued research in this field.

Preparing Alumina-Supported Gold Nanowires for Alcohol Oxidation

The development of shape-controlled noble metal nanocrystals such as nanowires (NWs) is progressing steadily owing to their potentially novel catalytic properties and the ease with which they can be prepared by reducing the metal ions in a particular solution as capping agents. Recently, many reports have been presented on the preparation of shape-controlled Au nanocrystals, such as nanostars and nanoflowers, by a one-pot method using 2-[4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazinyl] ethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) as capping and reducing agents. The catalytic activity is depressed due to the adsorption of the capping agent onto a Au surface. Since HEPES has low binding affinities on the Au surface, shape-controlled nanocrystals obtained using HEPES are effective for application as nanocatalysts because HEPES was easily removed from the Au surface. In this study, we report the preparation of AuNWs, with an average diameter of 7.7 nm and lengths of a few hundred nanometers, in an aqueous solution containing HEPES and sodium borohydride. A γ-Al2O3-supported AuNW (AuNW/γ-Al2O3) catalyst was obtained using catalytic supporters and a water extraction method that removed HEPES from the Au surface without morphological changes. AuNW/γ-Al2O3 was then utilized to catalyze the oxidation of 1-phenylethyl alcohol to acetophenone. The formation rate of acetophenone over AuNW/γ-Al2O3 was 3.2 times that over γ-Al2O3-supported spherical Au nanoparticles (AuNP/γ-Al2O3) with almost the same diameter.

Atomic Arrangement Modulation in CoFe Nanoparticles Encapsulated in N-Doped Carbon Nanostructures for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The properties and, hence, the application of materials are dependent on the way their constituent atoms are arranged. Here, we report a facile approach to produce body-centered cubic (bcc) and face-centered cubic (fcc) phases of bimetallic FeCo crystalline nanoparticles embedded into nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) with equal loading and almost similar particle size for both crystalline phases by a rational selection of precursors. The two electrocatalysts with similar composition but different crystalline structures of the encapsulated nanoparticles have allowed us, for the first time, to account for the effect of crystal structure on the overall work function of electrocatalysts and the concomitant correlation with the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This study unveils that the electrocatalysts with lower work function show lower activation energy to facilitate the ORR. Importantly, the difference between the ORR activation energy on electrocatalysts and their respective work functions are found to be identical (∼0.2 eV). A notable decrease in the ORR activity after acid treatment indicates the significant role of encapsulated FeCo nanoparticles in influencing the oxygen electrochemistry by modulating the material property of overall electrocatalysts.

The impact of synthetic method on the catalytic application of intermetallic nanoparticles

Intermetallic alloy nanocrystals have emerged as a promising next generation of nanocatalyst, largely due to their promise of surface tunability. Atomic control of the geometric and electronic structure of the nanoparticle surface offers a precise command of the catalytic surface, with the potential for creating homogeneous active sites that extend over the entire nanoparticle. Realizing this promise, however, has been limited by synthetic difficulties, imparted by differences in parent metal crystal structure, reduction potential, and atomic size. Further, little attention has been paid to the impact of synthetic method on catalytic application. In this review, we seek to connect the two, organizing the current synthesis methods and catalytic scope of intermetallic nanoparticles and suggesting areas where more work is needed. Such analysis should help to guide future intermetallic nanoparticle development, with the ultimate goal of generating precisely controlled nanocatalysts tailored to catalysis.

Highly active and noble-metal-alternative hydrogenation catalysts prepared by dealloying Ni-Si intermetallic compounds

Noble-metal-alternative Ni-Si catalysts more active than Pd in the hydrogen storage reaction were developed using a unique procedure, i.e., surface dealloying with hydrofluoric acid treatment. The combination of the structural analysis and the DFT calculation revealed a specific active site structure, a Ni cluster embedded in a SiO₂ matrix, and its unprecedented role in the molecular conversion.

Platinum recovery from industrial process streams by halophilic bacteria: Influence of salt species and platinum speciation

The increased use and criticality of platinum asks for the development of effective low-cost strategies for metal recovery from process and waste streams. Although biotechnological processes can be applied for the valorization of diluted aqueous industrial streams, investigations considering real stream conditions (e.g., high salt levels, acidic pH, metal speciation) are lacking. This study investigated the recovery of platinum by a halophilic microbial community in the presence of increased salt concentrations (10-80 g L^-1), different salt matrices (phosphate salts, sea salts and NH₄Cl) and a refinery process stream. The halophiles were able to recover 79-99% of the Pt at 10-80 g L^-1 salts and at pH 2.3. Transmission electron microscopy suggested a positive correlation between intracellular Pt cluster size and elevated salt concentrations. Furthermore, the halophiles recovered 46-95% of the Pt-amine complex Pt[NH₃]₄²⁺ from a process stream after the addition of an alternative Pt source (K₂PtCl₄, 0.1-1.0 g L^-1 Pt). Repeated Pt-tetraamine recovery (from an industrial process stream) was obtained after concomitant addition of fresh biomass and harvesting of Pt saturated biomass. This study demonstrates how aqueous Pt streams can be transformed into Pt rich biomass, which would be an interesting feed of a precious metals refinery.

Surface clean gold nanoflower obtained by complete removal of capping agents: an active catalyst for alcohol oxidation

Morphological stability and catalytic activity of Au nanoflowers (NFs) were improved by using γ-Al₂O₃ support and water extraction procedure. Formation rate of acetophenone on Au NFs/γ-Al₂O₃ was ten-fold higher than that on spherical Au NPs/γ-Al₂O₃.

Highly efficient aerobic oxidation of various amines using Pd3Pb intermetallic compounds as catalysts

Various amines including primary, secondary, benzylic, aliphatic and cyclic ones are converted into imines with high yields using the Pd₃Pb/Al₂O₃ catalyst.
