Hybrid PSf/TNT-SO3H Ultrafiltration Membrane Fouling by Sodium Alginate: Effect of Permeation Flux on Fouling Resistance and Desalination Efficiency

The development of low fouling UF membranes with boosting water flux for implementations in water purifications is critical. Organic foulants and ionic strength are the main characteristics of surface water which affect the membrane performance for water generation and seawater desalination. Low fouling hybrid ultrafiltration membranes were fabricated from a combination of sulfonic acid functionalized titanium nanotubes (TNTs-SO3H) and polysulfone (PSf) by the nonsolvent-induced phase separation approach. The membrane fouling was explored utilizing a polysaccharide sodium alginate (SA) as a hydrophilic nature organic matter, and the impact of Na+ and Ca2+ ions on alginate membrane fouling were also addressed. The results showed that the membranes’ water permeability and natural organic matter fouling resistances were affected by the proportion of TNTs-SO3H in the membranes. The inclusion of TNTs-SO3H improves the water penetration fluxes (Jw1) and surface hydrophilicity of the manufactured membranes. In the UF of sodium alginate solution, the produced membrane comprising 5% TNTs-SO3H exhibits a higher penetration flux and rejection value than the other membranes. The introduction of Na+ and Ca2+ ions to the SA solution reduces the membrane fouling. Furthermore, the adsorption investigation of sodium alginate solutions at $\text{pH}=7$ was lowered as the amount of TNTs-SO3H was increased. After ultrafiltration, the fouled membrane containing 5% TNTs-SO3H is readily removed, and recurrent antifouling experiments indicate a consistent and maximum filtration efficiency.

Understanding the Role of Shape and Composition of Star-Shaped Polymers and their Ability to Both Bind and Prevent Bacteria Attachment on Oral Relevant Surfaces

In this study, we have prepared a series of 4- and 6-arm star-shaped polymers with varying molecular weight and hydrophobicity in order to provide insight into the role and relationship that shape and composition have on the binding and protecting of oral relevant surfaces (hydroxyapatite, HAP) from bacteria colonization. Star-shaped acrylic acid polymers were prepared by free-radical polymerization in the presence of chain transfer agents with thiol groups, and their binding to the HAP surfaces and subsequent bacteria repulsion was measured. We observed that binding was dependent on both polymer shape and hydrophobicity (star vs. linear), but their relative efficacy to reduce oral bacteria attachment from surfaces was dependent on their hydrophobicity only. We further measured the macroscopic effects of these materials to modify the mucin-coated HAP surfaces through contact angle experiments; the degree of angle change was dependent on the relative hydrophobicity of the materials suggesting future in vivo efficacy. The results from this study highlight that star-shaped polymers represent a new material platform for the development of dental applications to control bacterial adhesion which can lead to tooth decay, with various compositional and structural aspects of materials being vital to effectively design oral care products.

A Carbonaceous Membrane based on a Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIM-1) for Water Treatment

As insufficient access to clean water is expected to become worse in the near future, water purification is becoming increasingly important. Membrane filtration is the most promising technologies to produce clean water from contaminated water. Although there have been many studies to prepare highly water-permeable carbon-based membranes by utilizing frictionless water flow inside the carbonaceous pores, the carbon-based membranes still suffer from several issues, such as high cost and complicated fabrication as well as relatively low salt rejection. Here, we report for the first time the use of microporous carbonaceous membranes via controlled carbonization of polymer membranes with uniform microporosity for high-flux nanofiltration. Further enhancement of membrane performance is observed by O₂ plasma treatment. The optimized membrane exhibits high water flux (13.30 LMH Bar⁻¹) and good MgSO₄ rejection (77.38%) as well as antifouling properties. This study provides insight into the design of microporous carbonaceous membranes for water purification.

Mussel-inspired dopamine- and plant-based cardanol-containing polymer coatings for multifunctional filtration membranes

A series of copolymers [PCD#s, where # is the weight percentage of dopamine methacrylamide (DMA) in polymers] containing mussel-inspired hydrophilic dopamine and plant-based hydrophobic cardanol moieties was prepared via radical polymerization using DMA and 2-hydroxy-3-cardanylpropyl methacrylate (HCPM) as the monomers. PCD#s were used as coating materials to prevent flux decline of the membranes caused by the adhesion of biofoulants and oil-foulants. Polysulfone (PSf) ultrafiltration membranes coated with PCD#s showed higher biofouling resistance than the bare PSf membrane, and the bactericidal properties of the membranes increased upon increasing the content of HCPM units in the PCD#s. Serendipitously, the PSf membranes coated with the more or less amphiphilic PCD54 and PCD74, having the optimum amount of both hydrophilic DMA and hydrophobic HCPM moieties, showed noticeably higher oil-fouling resistance than the more hydrophilic PCD91-coated membrane, the more hydrophobic PCD0-coated membrane, and the bare PSf membrane. Therefore, multifunctional coating materials having biofouling- and oil-fouling-resistant and bactericidal properties could be prepared from the monomers containing mussel-inspired dopamine and plant-based cardanol groups.

Utilization of star-shaped polymer architecture in the creation of high-density polymer brush coatings for the prevention of platelet and bacteria adhesion

We demonstrate utilization of star-shaped polymers as high-density polymer brush coatings and their effectiveness to inhibit the adhesion of platelets and bacteria. Star polymers consisting of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) and/or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), were synthesized using living radical polymerization with a ruthenium catalyst. The polymer coatings were prepared by simple drop casting of the polymer solution onto poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) surfaces and then dried. Among the star polymers prepared in this study, the PHEMA star polymer (star-PHEMA) and the PHEMA/PMMA (mol. ratio of 71/29) heteroarm star polymer (star-H71M29) coatings showed the highest percentage of inhibition against platelet adhesion (78-88% relative to noncoated PET surface) and Escherichia coli (94-97%). These coatings also showed anti-adhesion activity against platelets after incubation in Dulbecco's phosphate buffered saline or surfactant solution for 7 days. In addition, the PMMA component of the star polymers increased the scratch resistance of the coating. These results indicate that the star-polymer architecture provides high polymer chain density on PET surfaces to prevent adhesion of platelets and bacteria, as well as coating stability and physical durability to prevent exposure of bare PET surfaces. The star polymers provide a simple and effective approach to preparing anti-adhesion polymer coatings on biomedical materials against the adhesion of platelets and bacteria.
