Abstract
The concentration of intracellular zinc ions is a significant clinical parameter for diagnosis. However, it is still a challenge for direct visual detection of zinc ions in cells at single-cell level. To address this issue, herein, water-soluble amino-rich polydopamine carbon quantum dots (PDA-CQDs) were successfully synthesized, with strong blue-green fluorescence as the probes for zinc ions detection in cells. The structure and properties of PDA-CQDs were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR), UV-visible spectrophotometry (UV-vis), and fluorescence spectroscopy. Importantly, by successfully linking salicylaldehyde (SA) to PDA-CQDs via nucleophilic reaction, the FL quenching and Zn ions induced FL-recovering system was built up, thus offering a signal-on platform for the detection of zinc ions. This PDA-CQDs-SA nanoprobe can be applied for the detection of Zn2+with a detection limit of 0.09μM, with good biocompatibility confirmed using cytotoxicity assay. Of significance, the results of fluorescence bioimaging showed that PDA-CQDs-SA is able to detect Zn2+in single-cell visually, with the detection limit of Zn ions in cells as low as 0.11μM per cell, which was confirmed using flow cytometry. Therefore, this work offers a potential probe for Zn2+detection in cells at single-cell level, towards the precise diagnosis of zinc ions related diseases.

Abstract
The development of highly selective and sensitive chemosensors for Al3+ detection in pure aqueous solution is still a significant challenge. In this work, a novel water-soluble polymer PEGBAB based on salicylidene Schiff base has been designed and synthesized as a turn-on fluorescent chemosensor for the detection of Al3+ in 100% aqueous solution. PEGBAB exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity to Al3+ over other competitive metal ions with the detection limit as low as 4.05 × 10−9 M. PEGBAB displayed high selectivity to Al3+ in the pH range of 5–10. The fluorescence response of PEGBAB to Al3+ was reversible in the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Based on the fluorescence response, an INHIBIT logic gate was constructed with Al3+ and EDTA as two inputs. Moreover, test strips based on PEGBAB were fabricated facilely for convenient on-site detection of Al3+.

Abstract
Single crystal X-ray structurally characterized benzimidazole-naphthalene hybrid (NABI) functions as a unique dual analyte sensor that can detect Zn2+ cation and N3- anion independently. The NABI forms chelate with Zn2+ to inhibit internal charge transfer (ICT) and CHN isomerisation resulting chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF). On the other hand, the sensing of N3- is based on formation of supramolecular H-bonded rigid assembly. The association constant of NABI for Zn2+ and N3- ions are 19 × 104 M-1 and 11 × 102 M-1, respectively. Corresponding limit of detections (LOD) are 6.85 × 10-8 and 1.82 × 10-7 M, respectively. NABI efficiently detects intracellular Zn2+ and N3- ions with no cytotoxicity on J774A.1cells under fluorescence microscope. DFT studies unlock underlying spectroscopic properties of free NABI and Zn2+/N3- bound forms.

Abstract
Detection of heavy metal ions in water is important for environmental sustainability and food safety. Current fluorescent sensors interact with metal ions directly through chelation or chemical reactions. Those sensors are expensive to produce and often can detect only one ion at a time. Here we report a fluorescent turn-on sensor that can detect three group IIB metal ions and Pb2+ ions through label-free polypeptides in water. In our sensor-polypeptide mixture, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+ ions induce helix formation and inter-chain aggregation in poly-L-α-glutamic acid (PGA). The acridinium-based sensor molecules incorporate into the polypeptides and emit strongly with characteristic color for each group IIB ion under UV lamp. By adjusting the size of polypeptides or the length of the side chain carboxyl groups, we can selectively turn off or turn on the sensor emission for Hg2+ ions.

Abstract
The study reports synthesis and photophysical studies of a new zinc sensing pyrazole scaffold structurally characterized to be bis(2-hydroxybenzylidene)-1H-pyrazole-3,5-dicarbohydrazide (PHSA). Excitation of the probe at 330 nm results in an emission band at 417 nm which ratiometrically red shifts to 466 nm upon Zn2+ addition in an unprecedented way. The photo induced electron transfer (PET) coupled intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) working for a dual-channel fluorescence emission pathway is observed and studies were supported with density functional theory and NMR titration experiments. The probe exhibited dissociation constant of 1.2156 and detection limit as low as 992 nM. The cytotoxic effects of the probe on 60 tumour cell lines were tested. The intracellular zinc sensing with reversible binding potential is verified with fluorescence microscopy experiment.

Abstract
The fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism has been established between carbon dots (CDs) and naphthalimide to monitor the activity of thioredoxin reductase (TrxR), which is often overexpressed in many cancer cells. The naphthalimide moiety was covalently attached to the surface of CDs through a disulfide linkage. In normal cell conditions (when devoid of high concentrations of TrxR), the CDs act as an energy donor and naphthalimide acts as an acceptor, which establishes the FRET pair as interpreted from the emission at λem = 565 nm, when excited at λex = 360 nm. However, contrary to this, the elevated levels of TrxR cause the breakage of disulfide bonds and consequently abolishes the FRET pair through the release of the naphthalimide moiety from the surface of CDs. This process was studied by monitoring of fluorescence intensity at λem = 565 and 440 nm, when excited at the same wavelength (λex = 360 nm). The TrxR based ratiometric quenching and enhancement of fluorescence intensity offers an interesting opportunity to monitor the enzyme activities and has many advantages over conventional monitoring of fluorescence intensity at a single wavelength to avoid interference of external factors. Fluorescence images of cancer cells in response to the nanosensor were visualized under a confocal microscope. Cytotoxicity study of nanosensor retards the growth of HeLa and MCF-7 cell lines in the presence of visible light. Therefore, the nanosensor also acts as a theranostic agent to diagnose as well as killing of cancer cells.

Abstract
An amino acid Schiff base (R) capable of recognizing Zn(2+) ions selectively and sensitively in an aqueous medium was prepared and characterized. Upon addition of Zn(2+) ions, the receptor exhibits fluorescence intensity enhancements (~40 fold) at 460 nm (quantum yield, Φ=0.05 for R and Φ=0.18 for R-Zn(2+)) and can be detected by naked eye under UV light. The receptor can recognize the Zn(2+) (1.04×10(-8) M) selectively for other metal ions in the pH range of 7.5-11. The Zn(2+) chelation with R decreases the loss of energy through non-radiative transition and leads to fluorescence enhancement. The binding mode of the receptor with Zn(2+) was investigated by (1)H NMR titration and further validated by ESI-MS. The elemental color mapping and SEM/EDS analysis were also used to study the binding of R with Zn(2+). Density functional theory calculations were carried out to understand the binding mechanism. The receptor was applied as a microbial sensor for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
