Ion exchange fabrication of lanthanide functionalized layered double hydroxides microcapsules for rapid and visual detection of anthrax biomarker

Lanthanide ion probes have recently been considered as promising sensing materials due to their high sensitivity and good optical properties. Herein, the 3D hierarchical lanthanide functionalized layered double hydroxides microcapsules were synthesized via a facile ion exchange strategy and further developed as novel fluorescent probes for detecting trace amounts of the anthrax biomarker dipicolinicacid (DPA). Benefiting from the 3D porous superstructure and abundant unsaturated coordination sites of lanthanide ion, the ternary Ni-Fe-Ln-LDHs (Ln = Tb/Eu) not only possess a large reactive contact area to improve the sensitivity of DPA detection, but also demonstrate very fast reaction rate. The design of inexpensive fluorescent test strips can perform the on-site and real-time detection via a smartphone with a color recognition application. More prominently, the sensitivity of the system was evaluated by actual spore samples with the detection limit as low as 3.54 × 10⁴ spores/mL. The 3D lanthanide functionalized LDHs nanoprobe constructed by ion exchange exhibits a new vision for the development of a sensing platform in other research areas.

Smart intercalation and coordination strategy to construct stable ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobes for the detection of anthrax biomarker

L@Mg-Al-Ln-LDHs (Ln = Tb, Eu) constructed by the intercalation coordination strategy exhibited a strong and stable fluorescence reference signal and achieved reliable ratiometric detection of DPA in complex environments and actual spores.

Investigation of Structural and Luminescent Properties of Sol-Gel-Derived Cr‑Substituted Mg3Al1-xCrx Layered Double Hydroxides

In the present work, Cr-substituted Mg₃Al_1−xCr_x layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were synthesised through the phase conversion of sol-gel-derived mixed-metal oxides in an aqueous medium. The chromium substitution level in the range of 1 to 25 mol% was investigated. It was demonstrated that all synthesised specimens were single-phase LDHs. The results of elemental analysis confirmed that the suggested synthetic sol-gel chemistry approach is suitable for the preparation of LDHs with a highly controllable chemical composition. The surface microstructure of sol-gel-derived Mg₃Al_1−xCr_x LDHs does not depend on the chromium substitution level. The formation of plate-like agglomerated particles, which consist of hexagonally shaped nanocrystallites varying in size from approximately 200 to 300 nm, was observed. Optical properties of the synthesised Mg₃Al_1−xCr_x LDHs were investigated by means of photoluminescence. All Cr-containing powders exhibited characteristic emission in the red region of the visible spectrum. The strongest emission was observed for the sample doped with 5 mol% Cr³⁺ ions. However, the emission intensity of samples doped with 1–10 mol% Cr³⁺ ions was relatively similar. A further increase in the Cr³⁺ ion concentration to 25 mol% resulted in severe concentration quenching.

Direct molecular confinement in layered double hydroxides: from fundamental to advanced photo-luminescent hybrid materials

We report here new approaches for the direct intercalation of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) from carbonate-LDHs by using various organic acids as proton sources for de-carbonation.

Luminescent Layered Double Hydroxides Intercalated with an Anionic Photosensitizer via the Memory Effect

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) containing Eu3+ activators were synthesized by coprecipitation of Zn2+, Al3+, and Eu3+ in alkaline NO3−-rich aqueous solution. Upon calcination, these materials transform into a crystalline ZnO solid solution containing Al and Eu. For suitably low calcination temperatures, this phase can be restored to LDH by rehydration in water, a feature known as the memory effect. During rehydration of an LDH, new anionic species can be intercalated and functionalized, obtaining desired physicochemical properties. This work explores the memory effect as a route to produce luminescent LDHs intercalated with 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC), a known anionic photosensitizer for Eu3+. Time-dependent hydration of calcined LDHs in a BTC-rich aqueous solution resulted in the recovery of the lamellar phase and in the intercalation with BTC. The interaction of this photosensitizer with Eu3+ in the recovered hydroxide layers gave rise to efficient energy transfer from the BTC antennae to the Eu3+ ions, providing a useful tool to monitor the rehydration process of the calcined LDHs.

Layered Rare-Earth Hydroxide/Polyacrylamide Nanocomposite Hydrogels with Highly Tunable Photoluminescence

Polymer nanocomposite (NC) hydrogels, with 3D networks composed of delaminated inorganic nanoparticles and a polymer matrix, usually display super mechanical toughness. However, the few types of inorganic materials and relatively scarce research for NC hydrogel functions seriously limit their applications. For the first time layered rare-earth hydroxide (LRH)/polyacrylamide NC hydrogels with highly tunable photoluminescence (PL) function are reported, prepared via a convenient and green in situ polymerization process. Interestingly, the NC hydrogels reveal exciting multicolored PL phenomenon (green, yellow, orange, reddish-orange to bluish violet), long luminescence lifetime, and relatively high quantum efficiency. Furthermore, the fascinating PL function is highly tunable by adjusting LRH constituent or its concentration, and excitation wavelength. The results highlight the fabrication and applications of functional polymer NC hydrogels with highly tunable PL function.

A convenient green preparation of layered double hydroxide/polyacrylamide nanocomposite hydrogels with ultrahigh deformability

A convenient green preparation method has been developed to achieve layered double hydroxide (LDH)/polymer nanocomposite (NC) hydrogels. In contrast to previous publications using toxic organic solvent of formamide or methanol in LDH exfoliation or anion exchange, the interlayer anion exchange and exfoliation of LDH are completed in one step with the help of an amino acid (L-serine). The LDH/polyacrylamide (PAM) NC hydrogels are achieved by a convenient exfoliation-adsorption in situ polymerization method. The exfoliation of LDH is characterized by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Interestingly, the developed NC hydrogels reveal ultrahigh deformability and extraordinary stretchability, confirmed by qualitative images and qualitative tensile and compression tests. The molecular mechanism for the ultrahigh deformability and extraordinary stretchability is discussed by crosslinking density, inter-crosslinking molecular weight and swelling tests. We believe that the findings reported herein will deepen our understanding towards the chemistry of network soft materials including gels, and further widen the applications of polymer hydrogels in mechanical devices such as artificial muscles, biomedical devices and drug delivery systems.

Novel nanocomposite hydrogels consisting of layered double hydroxide with ultrahigh tensibility and hierarchical porous structure at low inorganic content

A novel type of polymer nanocomposite (NC) hydrogel with extraordinary mechanical properties at low inorganic content is prepared and investigated. The NC hydrogels consist of isethionate-loaded layered double hydroxide/polyacrylamide (LDH-Ise/PAM) - with LDH-Ise being used because of its swelling properties - and no conventional organic crosslinker. The NC hydrogels exhibit an unusual hierarchical porous structure at the micro- and nanometer scales, and their elongation at break can exceed 4000%.

Hybrid lanthanide complexes based on a novel β-diketone functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and their nanocomposites with PMMA via in situ polymerization
