Ab initio study revealing remarkable oscillatory effects and negative differential resistance in the molecular device of silicon carbide chains

Inspired by the requirements of miniaturization and multifunction of molecular devices, we investigate the quantum transport properties of three unique molecular devices with silicon carbide chains bridging gold electrodes by an ab initio approach. The pronounced quantum effects, including the oscillation of charge, conductance, and current, together with the negative differential resistance (NDR), have been observed simultaneously over a wide region in the double-chain device. It changes the regular situation that these two effects usually emerge in single-chain systems at the same time. Inspections of the visible differences in the transport behaviors relevant to length and bias between the three devices further evidence that the interchain interaction and molecule-electrode coupling are decisive factors for achieving the quantum effects of oscillation and NDR. These two factors can improve electronic transport capability through enhancing transmission, strengthening the delocalization of frontier molecular orbitals, and reducing potential barriers. Our results not only lay a solid foundation for the application of silicon carbide chains in the miniaturized and multifunctional molecular devices with good performance, but also provide an efficient way to the continuing search for materials with multiple controllable quantum effects in nanoelectronics.

Structural exploration of AuxM− (M = Si, Ge, Sn; x = 9–12) clusters with a revised genetic algorithm

We used a revised genetic algorithm (GA) to explore the potential energy surface (PES) of Au_xM⁻ (x = 9–12; M = Si, Ge, Sn) clusters. The most interesting finding in the structural study of Au_xSi⁻ (x = 9–12) is the 3D (Au₉Si⁻ and Au₁₀Si⁻) → quasi-planar 2D (Au₁₁Si⁻ and Au₁₂Si⁻) structural evolution of the Si-doped clusters, which reflects the competition of Au–Au interactions (forming a 2D structure) and Au–Si interactions (forming a 3D structure). The Au_xM⁻ (x = 9–12; M = Ge, Sn) clusters have quasi-planar structures, which suggests a lower tendency of sp³ hybridization and a similarity of electronic structure for the Ge or Sn atom. Au₉Si⁻ and Au₁₀Si⁻ have a 3D structure, which can be viewed as being built from Au₈Si⁻ and Au₉Si⁻ with an extra Au atom bonded to a terminal gold atom, respectively. In contrast, the quasi-planar structures of Au_xM⁻ (x = 9–12; M = Ge, Sn) reflect the domination of the Au–Au interactions. Including the spin–orbit (SO) effects is very important to calculate the simulated spectrum (structural fingerprint information) in order to obtain quantitative agreement between theoretical and future experimental PES spectra.

Au20Si12: A hollow Catalan pentakis dodecahedron

A stable hollow Au₂₀Si₁₂ cage with I_h symmetry has been predicted using first-principles density functional theory. The stability of the cage-like Au₂₀Si₁₂ structure is verified by vibrational frequency analysis and molecular dynamics simulations. A relatively large highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap of 1.057 eV is found. Electronic structure analysis shows that clearly p-d hybridizations between Si atoms and Au atoms are of great importance for the stability of Au₂₀Si₁₂ cage. The cage-like Au₂₀Si₁₂ structure may have potential applications in semiconductor industry and microelectronics.
