Single-molecule conductance in a unique cross-conjugated tetra(aminoaryl)ethene

A 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)ethene with three paths of π-conjugation, linear-cis, linear-trans and a cross-conjugation, has been prepared. The molecule is able to bind to gold electrodes forming molecular junctions for single-molecule conductance measurements. Only two regimes of conduction are found experimentally. The modelling of the conductance allows to assign them to through-bond transmission in the linear case, while the cross-conjugated channel is further assisted by through-space transmission, partially alleviating the destructive quantum interference.

Synthesis and Cyclization-Induced Charge Transfer of Rectangular Bisterthiophenesiloxanes

Cyclization-modified terthiophene displays the change of emission behavior from locally excited (LE) to the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state. The rectangular bisterthiophenesiloxanes (DSiTh) was successfully prepared by π-π-stacking-aided hydrogen-bonding interactions. Cyclization-induced ICT in DSiTh could be observed, which was confirmed by absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra, and quantum chemistry analysis. The cyclization produces a strong intramolecular electron redistribution of a highly packed π-conjugated terthiophene. Thus, a distinctive variation of the dipole moment and a through-space ICT happen.

Arene-Inserted Extended Germa[n]pericyclynes: Synthesis, Structure, and Phosphorescence Properties

This report describes the synthesis and characterization of arene-inserted extended (ArEx) germa[n]pericyclynes composed of germanium and 1,4-diethynylbenzene units. These novel cyclic germanium-π unit materials were synthesized with diethynylbenzene and germanium dichloride. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed their structures, and the planar conformation of ArEx germa[4]pericyclyne along with the regular aromatic rings. UV/Vis absorption spectra and fluorescence emission spectra showed considerably unique and highly improved character compared to previously reported germa[n]pericyclynes. Even in the absence of transition metal components, phosphorescence emissions were observed, and the emission lifetimes were dramatically improved. ArEx germa[n]pericyclynes showed high photoluminescence quantum yields, whereas low photoluminescence quantum yields were observed for acyclic compounds. Density functional theory calculations show delocalized orbitals between skipped alkyne units through a germanium tether, and an increase in the HOMO energy level, leading to a small HOMO-LUMO energy gap.

A Computational Investigation of the Substituent Effects on Geometric, Electronic, and Optical Properties of Siloles and 1,4-Disilacyclohexa-2,5-dienes

Thirty two differently substituted siloles 1a-1p and 1,4-disilacyclohexa-2,5-dienes 2a-2p were investigated by quantum chemical calculations using the PBE0 hybrid density functional theory (DFT) method. The substituents included σ-electron donating and withdrawing, as well as π-electron donating and withdrawing groups, and their effects when placed at the Si atom(s) or at the C atoms were examined. Focus was placed on geometries, frontier orbital energies and the energies of the first allowed electronic excitations. We analyzed the variation in energies between the orbitals which correspond to HOMO and LUMO for the two parent species, here represented as ΔεHL, motivated by the fact that the first allowed transitions involve excitation between these orbitals. Even though ΔεHL and the excitation energies are lower for siloles than for 1,4-disilacyclohexa-2,5-dienes the latter display significantly larger variations with substitution. The ΔεHL of the siloles vary within 4.57-5.35 eV (ΔΔεHL = 0.78 eV) while for the 1,4-disilacyclohexa-2,5-dienes the range is 5.49-7.15 eV (ΔΔεHL = 1.66 eV). The excitation energy of the first allowed transitions display a moderate variation for siloles (3.60-4.41 eV) whereas the variation for 1,4-disilacyclohexa-2,5-dienes is nearly doubled (4.69-6.21 eV). Cyclobutadisiloles combine the characteristics of siloles and 1,4-disilacyclohexa-2,5-diene by having even lower excitation energies than siloles yet also extensive variation in excitation energies to substitution of 1,4-disilacyclohexa-2,5-dienes (3.47-4.77 eV, variation of 1.30 eV).

Extended germa[N]pericyclynes: synthesis and characterization

We herein describe the syntheses and characterization of extended germa[N]pericyclynes, which are macrocycles composed of germanium-butadiyne units. The obtained novel extended germa[4]-[8]pericyclynes were characterized by X-ray crystallography, UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence and phosphorescence emission spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry, and exhibited characteristic absorptions and emissions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested smaller HOMO-LUMO gap energy compared to that of general germapericyclynes.

Computational characterization of competing energy and electron transfer states in bimetallic donor-acceptor systems for photocatalytic conversion

The rapidly growing interest in photocatalytic systems for direct solar fuel production such as hydrogen generation from water splitting is grounded in the unique opportunity to achieve charge separation in molecular systems provided by electron transfer processes. In general, both photoinduced and catalytic processes involve complicated dynamics that depend on both structural and electronic effects. Here the excited state landscape of metal centered light harvester-catalyst pairs is explored using density functional theory calculations. In weakly bound systems, the interplay between structural and electronic factors involved can be constructed from the various mononuclear relaxed excited states. For this study, supramolecular states of electron transfer and excitation energy transfer character have been constructed from constituent full optimizations of multiple charge/spin states for a set of three Ru-based light harvesters and nine transition metal catalysts (based on Ru, Rh, Re, Pd, and Co) in terms of energy, structure, and electronic properties. The complete set of combined charge-spin states for each donor-acceptor system provides information about the competition of excited state energy transfer states with the catalytically active electron transfer states, enabling the identification of the most promising candidates for photocatalytic applications from this perspective.

Expanding the (cross-)hyperconjugation of 1,4-disilacyclohexa-2,5-dienes to larger monomers and oligomers: a computational investigation

DFT calculations are used to study molecules that can be regarded as expanded 1,4-disilacyclohexa-2,5-dienes as well as oligomers based on these or 1,4-disilacyclohexa-2,5-diene with the aim to identify systems with extended (cross)-hyperconjugation.

Stepwise synthesis and characterization of germa[4], [5], [8], and [10]pericyclynes

The stepwise syntheses of germa[N]pericyclynes, including [5]pericyclynes, and their characterization are described. The yields of germa[4] and [8]pericyclynes were improved significantly compared to those obtained in previous studies. The routes reported herein afforded the novel germa[5] and [10]pericyclynes, which were characterized by X-ray crystallography, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and fluorescence emission spectroscopy. A unique fluorescence emission was observed for the large germa[10]pericyclyne ring.

Conformation-determined through-bond versus through-space electronic communication in mixed-valence systems with a cross-conjugated urea bridge

Bis-triarylamine 2 and cyclometalated diruthenium 6(PF6)2 with a linear trans,trans-urea bridge have been prepared, together with the bis-triarylamine 3 and cyclometalated diruthenium 8(PF6)2 with a folded cis,cis-N,N-dimethylurea bridge. The linear or folded conformations of these molecules are supported by single-crystal X-ray structures of 2, 3, and other related compounds. These compounds display two consecutive anodic redox waves (N(·+/0) or Ru(III/II) processes) with a potential separation of 110-170 mV. This suggests that an efficient electronic coupling is present between two redox termini through the cross-conjugated urea bridge. The degree of electronic coupling has been investigated by using spectroelectrochemical measurements. Distinct intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) transitions have been observed for mixed-valent (MV) compounds with a linear conformation. The IVCT transitions can also be identified for the folded MV compounds, albeit with a much weaker intensity. DFT results support that the electronic communication occurs by a through-bond and through-space pathway for the linear and folded compounds, respectively. The IVCT transitions of the MV compounds have been reproduced by TDDFT calculations. For the purpose of comparison, a bistriarylamine and a diruthenium complex with an imidazolidin-2-one bridge and a urea-containing mono-triarylamine and monoruthenium complex have been synthesized and studied.

Synthesis and characterization of germa[n]pericyclynes

The synthesis and characterization of novel pericyclynes comprising germanium atoms and acetylenes, germa[n]pericyclynes, are described. The prepared germa[4]-, [6]-, and [8]pericyclynes were compared by (13)C NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, cyclic voltammetry, UV-visible spectroscopy, fluorescence emission spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculation analyses.

Quantum-chemical insights into mixed-valence systems: within and beyond the Robin–Day scheme

The application of quantum-chemical methods to both organic and transition-metal mixed-valence systems is reviewed, with particular emphasis on how to describe correctly delocalisation vs. localisation near the borderline between Robin–Day classes II and III.
