Abstract
A series of Ru(II)-acetylide complexes (Ru1, Ru2, and Ru1m) with alkynyl-functionalized borondipyrromethene (BODIPY) conjugates were designed by varying the position of the linker that connects the BODIPY unit to the Ru(II) metal center through acetylide linkage at either the 2-(Ru1) and 2,6-(Ru2) or the meso-phenyl (Ru1m) position of the BODIPY scaffold. The Ru(II) organometallic complexes were characterized by various spectroscopic methods, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, CHN, and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) analyses. The Ru(II)-BODIPY conjugates exhibit fascinating electrochemical and photophysical properties. All BODIPY-Ru(II) complexes exhibit strong absorption (εmax = 29,000-72,000 M-1 cm-1) in the visible region (λmax = 502-709 nm). Fluorescence is almost quenched for Ru1 and Ru2, whereas Ru1m shows the residual fluorescence of the corresponding BODIPY core at 517 nm. The application of the BODIPY-Ru(II) dyads as nonporphyrin-based triplet photosensitizers was explored by a method involving the singlet oxygen (1O2)-mediated photo-oxidation of diphenylisobenzofuran. Effective π-conjugation between the BODIPY chromophore and Ru(II) center in the case of Ru1 and Ru2 was found to be necessary to improve intersystem crossing (ISC) and hence the 1O2-sensitizing ability. In addition, electrochemical studies indicate electronic interplay between the metal center and the redox-active BODIPY in the BODIPY-Ru(II) dyads.

Abstract
Anion- and temperature-induced alteration of the photoredox behaviors of our recently reported trimetallic complexes was carried out to fabricate potential molecular switches. The triads [(phen)2Ru(d-HIm-t)M(t-HIm-d)Ru(phen)2]6+ (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, d-HIm-t = heterotopic bipyridine-terpyridne type bridging ligand, and M = RuII and OsII) possess two acidic imidazole NH protons that upon interaction with anions give rise to considerable changes in their photophysical and electrochemical behaviors. Red-shifts of the absorption and emission maximum and a decrease in the M3+/M2+ potential occur when the triads are treated with basic anions. In fact, the triads can function as triple-channel sensors for F-, AcO-, CN-, OH-, and H2PO4- in acetonitrile and as selective probes for CN- and SCN- in water. The equilibrium constants for the receptor-anion interaction are on the order of 106 M-1, while the limit of detection was on the order of 10-9 M. Temperature plays a key role in the luminescence properties of the triads by adjusting the energy barrier between the emitting triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer and non-emitting triplet metal-centered levels. A decrease in temperature leads to increases in the emission intensity and lifetime of the triads displaying the "on state", whereas an increase in temperature leads to a decrease in their emission characteristics and thus indicates the "off state" and that the process is fully reversible. In essence, the triads could function as potential switches on the basis of the reversible change in their spectral and redox behaviors under the influence of anion, acid, and temperature. The most important outcome of this study is mimicking several advanced Boolean and fuzzy logic functions by utilizing the spectral response of the triads upon the action of said external stimuli.

Abstract
The benzimidazole-based ligand containing polymerizable styrene group has been prepared via condensation of picolinaldehyde derivative containing styrene moiety and benzimidazole-based hydrazine. The ligand reacted with iron(II) tetrafluoroborate and iron(II) trifluoromethanesulfonate giving red-brown complexes of Fe(II) ions of formula [FeL2]X2, where X = CF3SO3− (1) or BF4− (2). Reductive electropolymerization was used to obtain a thin layer of the polymeric complex, poly-1. Further investigation of electrochemical properties of the compound by cyclic voltammetry showed two quasi-reversible redox processes assigned to electrooxidation and electroreduction of the polymer. Spectroelectrochemical measurements confirmed that the polymer undergoes the color changes during oxidation and reduction process. The polymer in its neutral state (Fe(II)) is yellow and it exhibits absorption band at 370 nm, after oxidation to Fe(III) state absorption band shifts to 350 nm and the polymer is almost colorless. While the metal ions are reduced to Fe(I) absorption band at around 410 nm has been observed and the polymer changed its color to intense yellow. The stability of the polymer during multiple oxidation/reduction cycles has also been investigated.

Abstract
A Kagome structure covalent organic framework (COF) film with three-state NIR electrochromic properties was designed and synthesized. The COFTPDA-PDA film is composed of hexagonal nanosheets with high crystallinity and has three reversible color states at different applied potentials. It has high absorption spectra changes in the NIR region, ascribed to the strong intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) interaction of the Class III mixed-valence systems of the conjugated triphenylamine species. The film showed sub-second response time (1.3 s for coloring and 0.7 s for bleaching at 1050 nm) and long retention time in the NIR region. COFTPDA-PDA film shows superior NIR electrochromic properties in term of response time and stability, attributed to the highly ordered porous structure and the π-π stacking structure of the COFTPDA-PDA architecture. The COFTPDA-PDA film was applied in mimicking a flip-flop logic gate with optical memory function.

Abstract
Transmissive-to-colored electrochromism has been achieved by combination of MLCT of transition metal complexes with the electrochromic properties of ligand molecules. The color transitions were from yellow to dark brown for the Fe(ii) complex, yellow to orange to bluish-green for the Co(ii) complex and yellow to green for the Zn(ii) complex. By using a metal ion-ligand coordination approach, the self-assembly of hydrazone-based ligands containing a triphenylamine group with appropriate metal salts (FeCl2, Co(ClO4)2 and Zn(BF4)2) produced novel complexes of the general formula [ML2]X2. The isolated complexes were characterized by spectroscopic methods, and the Co(ii) complex also by X-ray diffraction analysis. Thin films of the complexes have been obtained by a spray-coating method and they were used in the construction of electrochromic devices, which showed good electrochromic stability, a high color contrast of 47.5% for Fe(ii), 37.2% for Co(ii) and 33.7% for Zn(ii) complexes and fast coloring and bleaching times.

Abstract
An electrochromic (EC) hyperbranched coordination nanosheet (CONASH) comprising a three-arm terpyridine (3tpy)-based ligand and Fe(II) ion has been synthesized by interfacial complexation at the liquid-liquid interface. The film can be easily deposited on the desired substrate such as indium tin oxide (ITO) glass. Characterization of CONASH deposited on ITO by microscopic methods reveals the homogeneous nanosheet film with an ∼350 nm thickness after 48 h of reaction. The fabricated solid-state EC device (ECD) undergoes a reversible redox reaction (Fe2+ → Fe3+) in the potential range of +3 to -2 V in ECDs accompanied with a distinct color change from intense pink to colorless for several switching cycles with a coloration time of 1.15 s and a bleaching time of 2.49 s along with a high coloration efficiency of 470.16 cm2 C-1. Besides, the nonconjugated 3tpy ligand restricts the easy electron redox conduction inside the EC film to enhance the EC memory in open-circuit condition as it shows 50% retention of its colorless state until 25 min. The long EC memory compared to other metallo-supramolecular polymers having a conjugated ligand suggests the potentiality of the 3tpy-Fe CONASH film to be used as a power-efficient EC material for modern display device applications.

Abstract
A cyclometalated ruthenium sensitizer 3 containing a triphenylamine unit was synthesized and immobilized on a nanocrystalline TiO2 surface. By using oxidative electrochemical deposition, a covalent layer of a related cyclometalated ruthenium complex 2 was coupled to the top of dye 3. Electrochemical studies suggested that complex 2 was immobilized on the TiO2/3 film surface by a tetraphenylbenzidine linker to form a dimer-like structure. The immobilization of 3 and 2 was further supported by absorption spectral analysis. The resulting electrodeposited TiO2/(3+2) film displays significantly enhanced sensitizer stabilization toward basic aqueous NaOH solution with respect to the original TiO2/3 film. The dye-sensitized solar cells with the TiO2/(3+2) photoanode display a power conversion efficiency of 4.4%, which is slightly inferior to that with the TiO2/3 film (5.1%) under the same measurement conditions.

Abstract
Sb-Doped nanocrystalline SnO2 (SnO2:Sb) thin films functionalized with cyclometalated ruthenium complexes 1 or 2 on FTO conductive glasses have been prepared and characterized. These complexes contain a redox-active amine unit separated from the ruthenium ion by a phenyl or biphenyl linker, respectively, to modify the absorption wavelengths at different redox states. Near-infrared electrochromism of both films has been examined by oxidative spectroelectrochemical measurements and double-potential-step chronoamperometry. A contrast ratio (ΔT%) of 33% at 1070 nm and 63% at 696 nm has been achieved for the SnO2:Sb/1 film in two stepwise oxidation processes, respectively. The other film with complex 2 shows two-step electrochromism at 1310 and 806 nm with ΔT% of 36% and 76%, respectively. The response time of electrochromic switching is around a few seconds. Taking advantage of the good contrast ratio, the rapid response, and the long retention time of each oxidation state, these films have been successfully used to demonstrate surface-confined flip-flop memory functions with a high ON/OFF ratio.

Abstract
Six terphenyl-bridged cyclometalated ruthenium-amine conjugated complexes 4(PF6)-9(PF6) were synthesized and studied. Three different substituents, methoxy, methyl, and chloro, were used to vary the electronic nature of the amine unit, and two terminal ligands 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) and trimethyl-4,4',4″-tricarboxylate-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (Me3tctpy) were used to tune the electronic nature of the ruthenium component. All complexes, except 7(PF6) with the methoxy substituent and Me3tctpy ligand, display two well-separated redox waves in the potential range of +0.5 to +1.1 V versus Ag/AgCl. The regular electrochemical changes of these complexes help to establish the oxidation order of ruthenium and amine and hence of the direction of the electron transfer in odd-electron state. The degree of electronic coupling was estimated by analyzing the donor-to-acceptor charge transfer band in the near-infrared region obtained by oxidative spectroelectrochemical measurements. Electron paramagnetic resonance analyses and density functional theory calculations were performed on the one-electron oxidized forms to obtain information on the spin distribution of these complexes.

Abstract
Ruthenium polypyridyl type complexes are potent photoactive compounds, and have found - among others - a broad range of important applications in the fields of biomedical diagnosis and phototherapy, energy conversion schemes such as dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and molecular assemblies for tailored photo-initiated processes. In this regard, the linkage of RuII polypyridyl-type complexes with specific functional moieties is highly desirable to enhance their inherent photophysical properties, e.g., with a targeting function to achieve cell selectivity, or with a dye or redox-active subunits for energy- and electron-transfer. However, the classical approach of performing ligand syntheses first and the formation of Ru complexes in the last steps imposes synthetic limitations with regard to tolerating functional groups or moieties as well as requiring lengthy convergent routes. Alternatively, the diversification of Ru complexes after coordination (termed "chemistry-on-the-complex") provides an elegant complementary approach. In addition to the Click chemistry concept, the rapidly developing synthesis and purification methodologies permit the preparation of Ru conjugates via amidation, alkylation and cross-coupling reactions. In this regard, recent developments in chromatography shifted the limits of purification, e.g., by using new commercialized surface-modified silica gels and automated instrumentation. This review provides detailed insights into applying the "chemistry-on-the-complex" concept, which is believed to stimulate the modular preparation of unpreceded molecular assemblies as well as functional materials based on Ru-based building blocks, including combinatorial approaches.

Abstract
Four bridged cyclometalated diruthenium systems are highlighted in this Frontier article, including strongly-coupled diruthenium complexes with a short phen-1,4-diyl or a planar pyren-2,7-diyl bridge, redox asymmetric diruthenium complexes characterized by different terminal ligands on the two ends, diruthenium complexes with a urea bridge that allows modulating the degree of electronic coupling, and those with a redox-active amine bridge with varying electronic structures. These complexes posess redox couples with low potentials and intense intervalence charge transfer absorptions in the near-infrared region in the one-electron-oxidized mixed-valent state. They are appealing not only for providing a platform for fundamental electron transfer studies but also as molecular materials with multi-stage redox switching properties.

Abstract
Uniform Co9Se8 quantum dots (CSQDs) were successfully synthesized through a facile solvothermal method. The obtained CSQDs with average size of 3.2 ± 0.1 nm and thickness of 1.8 ± 0.2 nm were demonstrated good stability and strong fluorescence under UV light after being easily dispersed in both of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and deionized water. We demonstrated the flexible resistive switching memory device based on the hybridization of CSQDs and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) (CSQDs-PVP). The device with the Al/CSQDs-PVP/Pt/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) structure represented excellent switching parameters such as high ON/OFF current ratio, low operating voltages, good stability, and flexibility. The flexible resistive switching memory device based on hybridization of CSQDs and PVP has a great potential to be used in flexible and high-performance memory applications.

Abstract
Homogeneous thin films of controlled thickness obtained from cyclometalated complexes of general formula [(C(∧)N)M(O(∧)N)], where M = Pd(II) or Pt(II), H(C(∧)N) = 2-phenylpyridine and, respectively, 2-thienylpyridine and H(O(∧)N) = a triphenylamine functionalized Schiff base, have been deposited by oxidative electropolymerization. The films have been electrochemically and morphologically characterized. The metallopolymeric thin films present stable reversible redox behavior and typical cauliflower-like textures in agreement with a nucleation-growth electropolymerization mechanism. However, the film growth is greatly influenced by the nature of the metal center, with a higher tendency of the Pt complexes to promote the 3D growth. Furthermore, a complete spectroelectrochemical study has been performed on electrodeposited films showing near-IR absorption in the oxidized state, high contrast ratios (up to 65%) and low response times.

Abstract
Electrochromic materials have attracted increasing attention in the field of smart devices and energy economy due to their excellent reversible chromic properties. Investigating an electrochromic process at the nano-scale is beneficial to the development of functional nano-devices exploiting chromophores. In this study, a new method for real-time imaging of an electrochromic process at the single nanoparticle level is developed based on an ultra-sensitive plasmon resonance energy transfer (PRET) technique. The scattering light intensity of nanoparticles is applied to reveal energy transfer from nanoparticles to chromophores modulated by an electrochromic reaction. This PRET-based technique achieves the detection of hundreds of molecules on the surface of a single nanoparticle. Furthermore, a color-coded amplifying method has been introduced for high-throughput, converting light intensity into easily recognized colors via the Matlab program. Compared with traditional electrochemical imaging techniques, this facile and rapid approach using optical techniques to characterize a real-time electrochemical process significantly enhances detection sensitivity, time and spatial resolution. Notably, the obtained electrochromic behavior of chromophores on a single nanoparticle is in good agreement with the simulated cyclic voltammetry (CV) curves on a nano-electrode. Therefore, this study provides a promising way to simultaneously monitor electrochromic reactions on single nano-electrodes with high-throughput.

Abstract
A series of bis-tridentate cyclometalated osmium complexes with a redox-active triarylamine substituent have been prepared, where the amine substituent is separated from the osmium ion by a p-oligophenylene wire of various lengths. X-ray crystallographic data of complexes 3(PF6) and 4(PF6) with three or four repeating phenyl units between the osmium ion and the amine substituent are presented. These complexes show two consecutive anodic redox couples between +0.1 and +0.9 V vs Ag/AgCl, with the potential splitting in the range of 300-390 mV. A combined experimental and theoretical study suggests that, in the one-electron-oxidized state, the odd electron is delocalized for short congeners and localized on the osmium component for long congeners. The electronic coupling parameter (Vab) was estimated by the Marcus-Hush analysis. The distance dependence plot of ln(Vab) versus the osmium-amine geometrical distance (Rab) gives a negative linear relationship with a decay slope of -0.19 Å(-1), which is slightly steeper with respect to the previously reported ruthenium-amine series with the same molecular wire. DFT calculations with the long-range-corrected UCAM-B3LYP functional gave more reasonable results for the osmium complexes with respect to those with UB3LYP.

Abstract
Self-assembled monolayer films of a cyclometalated ruthenium complex with a redox-active amine substituent and three carboxylic acid groups have been prepared on ITO electrode surfaces. The obtained thin films show three-state electrochromic switching with low electrochemical potential inputs and high near-infrared absorbance outputs. Thanks to the long retention time of each oxidation states, these films have been used to demonstrate surface-confined flip-flop memory functions with high ON/OFF ratios at the molecular scale.

Abstract
A diruthenium complex capped with two triphenylamine units was polymerized by electrochemical oxidation to afford metallopolymeric films with alternating diruthenium and tetraphenylbenzidine structures. The obtained thin films feature rich redox processes associated with the reduction of the bridging ligands (tetra(pyrid-2-yl)pyrazine) and the oxidation of the tetraphenylbenzidine and diruthenium segments. The sandwiched ITO/polymer film/Al electrical devices show excellent resistive memory switching with a low operational voltage, large ON/OFF current ratio (100-1000), good stability (500 cycles tested), and long retention time. In stark contrast, devices with polymeric films of a related monoruthenium complex show poor memory performance. The mechanism of the field-induced conductivity of the diruthenium polymer film is rationalized by the formation of a charge transfer state, as supported by DFT calculations.
