A review of bioinspired dry adhesives: from achieving strong adhesion to realizing switchable adhesion

In the early twenty-first century, extensive research has been conducted on geckos' ability to climb vertical walls with the advancement of microscopy technology. Unprecedented studies and developments have focused on the adhesion mechanism, structural design, preparation methods, and applications of bioinspired dry adhesives. Notably, strong adhesion that adheres to both the principles of contact splitting and stress uniform distribution has been discovered and proposed. The increasing popularity of flexible electronic skins, soft crawling robots, and smart assembly systems has made switchable adhesion properties essential for smart adhesives. These adhesives are designed to be programmable and switchable in response to external stimuli such as magnetic fields, thermal changes, electrical signals, light exposure as well as mechanical processes. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the development history of bioinspired dry adhesives from achieving strong adhesion to realizing switchable adhesion.

Enhanced Flexible Mold Lifetime for Roll-to-Roll Scaled-Up Manufacturing of Adhesive Complex Microstructures

Various functional complex 3D patterned surfaces with micro- or nanostructures have been developed and their superior performances over non-patterned smooth surfaces proven. However, it is challenging to mass-produce such complex micro-/nanopatterned surfaces, which limits their commercialization drastically. Although roll-to-roll (R2R) manufacturing using flexible molds has been implemented for mass-production of such functional surfaces, the poor mold repeatability issue has not been resolved yet. Here, a strategy to significantly improve the repeatability of the micropatterned flexible silicone molds over 1000 cycles against highly adhesive polyurethane acrylates (PUAs) in UV light curing based R2R systems by using a two-step curing process is reported. The mold repeatability is drastically increased from 10s of cycles to over 1000 cycles through the proposed strategy in spite of the complicated 3D undercut geometry and high tackiness of the microstructure. This two-step process would enable scaled-up production of micro-/nanostructured adhesives, such as gecko-inspired microfiber adhesives as demonstrated in this study, as well as various other functional micro-/nanostructured surfaces by enhancing the flexible mold lifetime.

Effects of loading and unloading control parameters on adhesive performance for biomimetic controllable adhesive with wedge-shaped microstructures

The adhesive performance of biomimetic controllable adhesive based on wedge-shaped microstructures is affected by some relevant control parameters in the process of loading and unloading. An appropriate selection of these control parameters is of great significance for its effective application. However, little research has concentratively and comprehensively explored these control parameters. In order to make up for the shortcoming, this study systematically explored the macroscopic adhesive performance of the self-developed wedge-shaped microstructures under different loading and unloading control parameters. The results show that preloading depth and tangential dragging distance have a positive effect on the adhesive performance, while preloading angle and peeling angle have a negative effect on the adhesive performance. Specifically, a low preloading angle can weaken the normal preloading force under the same preloading depth, thereby improving the preloading benefit; the application of tangential dragging distance can also induce the normal preloading force generated in the preloading stage to change the adhesion, so as to stimulate more adhesion. Based on the interactive analysis of these control parameters, it can be sure that applying a moderate normal preloading force and a larger tangential dragging distance to the wedge-shaped microstructures at low preloading angle not only makes the wedge-shaped microstructures possess better adhesive capacity, but also can obtain a good preloading benefit. In addition, the promotion effect of a low peeling angle on the adhesive performance also implies that a higher peeling angle should be used to realize the easy detachment of the adhesive interface. The first concentrative and comprehensive investigation of the relevant control parameters of wedge-shaped microstructures lays the foundation for designing a climbing robot or adhesive gripper based on the wedge-shaped microstructures, and also provides guidance for formulating the corresponding control strategies.

Slanted Functional Gradient Micropillars for Optimal Bioinspired Dry Adhesion

For biologically inspired dry adhesives, the fibrillar structure of the surface requires sufficient flexibility to form contacts and meanwhile high rigidity to maintain stability. This fundamental conflict has greatly hindered the advance of synthetic adhesives toward mass-scale and practical applications, where adhesion is desired to be simultaneously strong, durable, directional, and roughness-adaptive. In this work, we overcome such a long-term challenge by developing fibrillar structures that combine both slanted geometry and gradient material of micropillars. The termed slanted functional gradient pillars (s-FGPs), fabricated by a magnetically assisted mold replication technique, exhibit flexible tips for contacts, gradually stiffened stalks for reinforcement, slanted structure to give rise to anisotropy, and high aspect ratio (AR) to facilitate surface adaptation. We demonstrate that the material and structure of the s-FGPs complement each other, synergetic effects of which result in a multifunctional combination of adhesion properties including high strength (∼9 N/cm² in shear), ultradurability (over 200 cycles of attachment/detachment without adhesion degradation), super anisotropy (anisotropic ratio of ∼7), and good adaptability to rough surfaces. The s-FGPs not only step forward the bioinspired adhesion toward optimized designs and performances for practical applications but may also open up other concepts for various high-AR and structurally stable fibrillar surfaces with emerging functionalities and applications in the fields of self-cleaning, superhydrophobicity, biosensors, energy harvesting, etc.

Internally architectured materials with directionally asymmetric friction

Internally Architectured Materials (IAMs) that exhibit different friction forces for sliding in the opposite directions are proposed. This is achieved by translating deformation normal to the sliding plane into a tangential force in a manner that is akin to a toothbrush with inclined bristles. Friction asymmetry is attained by employing a layered material or a structure with parallel 'ribs' inclined to the direction of sliding. A theory of directionally asymmetric friction is presented, along with prototype IAMs designed, fabricated and tested. The friction anisotropy (the ξ-coefficient) is characterised by the ratio of the friction forces for two opposite directions of sliding. It is further demonstrated that IAM can possess very high levels of friction anisotropy, with ξ of the order of 10. Further increase in ξ is attained by modifying the shape of the ribs to provide them with directionally dependent bending stiffness. Prototype IAMs produced by 3D printing exhibit truly giant friction asymmetry, with ξ in excess of 20. A novel mechanical rectifier, which can convert oscillatory movement into unidirectional movement by virtue of directionally asymmetric friction, is proposed. Possible applications include locomotion in a constrained environment and energy harvesting from oscillatory noise and vibrations.

Fabrication of hierarchical gecko-inspired microarrays using a three-dimensional porous nickel oxide template

In the current work, a three dimensional porous nickel based (p-Ni/NiO) template processed by a simple electrodeposition method was used to fabricate the hierarchical gecko-inspired microarrays.

Bioinspired orientation-dependent friction

Spatular terminals on the toe pads of a gecko play an important role in directional adhesion and friction required for reversible attachment. Inspired by the toe pad design of a gecko, we study friction of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) micropillars terminated with asymmetric (spatular-shaped) overhangs. Friction forces in the direction of and against the spatular end were evaluated and compared to friction forces on symmetric T-shaped pillars and pillars without overhangs. The shape of friction curves and the values of friction forces on spatula-terminated pillars were orientation-dependent. Kinetic friction forces were enhanced when shearing against the spatular end, while static friction was stronger in the direction toward the spatular end. The overall friction force was higher in the direction against the spatula end. The maximum value was limited by the mechanical stability of the overhangs during shear. The aspect ratio of the pillar had a strong influence on the magnitude of the friction force, and its contribution surpassed and masked that of the spatular tip for aspect ratios of >2.
