Abstract
Multilayer vesicles with an onion-like architecture can form by self-assembly of organic amphiphiles such as dendrimers, small-molecule surfactants, and block copolymers. Thus far, there are limited reports about multilayer vesicles based on coordination compounds. Herein, we show that nano onions are obtained by aggregation of an amphiphilic Au3(pyrazolate)3 complex in aqueous solution. The nanostructures were characterized by cryogenic and transition electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Control experiments with analogous Ag(I) and Cu(I) complexes revealed the importance of Au(I) for the formation of well-defined nano onions. A structurally related Au(I) complex without solubilizing polyethylene glycol side chains was analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the solid state, columns of offset, π-stacked Au3(pyrazolate)3 complexes are observed, but short intermolecular Au⋯Au contacts were not found. Molecular dynamics simulations provided further insights into the aggregation process in aqueous solution, supporting the formation of nano-onion structures through lateral interactions between stacked complexes.

Abstract
Understanding the property-function relation of nanoparticles in various application fields involves determining their physicochemical properties, which is still a remaining challenge to date. While a multitude of different characterization tools can be applied, these methods by themselves can only provide an incomplete picture. Therefore, novel analytical techniques are required, which can address both chemical functionality and provide structural information at the same time with high spatial resolution. This is possible by using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), but due to its limited depth information, TERS is usually restricted to investigations of the nanoparticle surface. Here, TERS experiments are established on polystyrene nanoparticles (PS NPs) after resin embedding and microtome slicing. With that, unique access to their internal morphological features is gained, and thus, enables differentiation between information obtained for core- and shell-regions. Complementary information is obtained by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and from force-distance curve based atomic force microscopy (FD-AFM). This multimodal approach achieves a high degree of discrimination between the resin and the polymers used for nanoparticle formulation. The high potential of TERS combined with advanced AFM spectroscopy tools to probe the mechanical properties is applied for quality control of the resin embedding procedure.

Abstract
We observe the formation of highly controllable and responsive onion-like vesicles by using rigid sphere-rod amphiphilic hybrid macromolecules, composed of charged, hydrophilic Keggin-type clusters (spheres) and hydrophobic rod-like oligofluorenes (OFs). Unlike the commonly used approach, which mainly relies on chain bending of flexible molecules to satisfy different curvatures in onion-like vesicles, the rigid hybrids form flexible interdigitations by tuning the angles between OFs, leading to the formation of bilayers with different sizes. The self-assembled vesicles possess complete onion-like structures from most inner to outer layers, and their size (layer number) can be accurately manipulated by different solution conditions including solvent polarity, ionic strength, temperature, and hybrid concentration, with fixed interbilayer distance under all conditions. Moreover, the vesicle size (layer number) shows excellent reversibility to the change of temperature. The charged feature of spheres, rod length, and overall hybrid architecture shows significant effects on the formation of such onion-like vesicles.

Abstract
The coordination of the chiral metalloporphyrin ([5,10,15,20-[4-([Formula: see text]-2-[Formula: see text]-octadecylamidoethyloxiphenyl]porphyrin] zinc (II)) and an achiral homologue to an amphiphilic block copolymer of poly(styrene-[Formula: see text]-4-vinyl pyridine) (PS-[Formula: see text]-P4VP) have been studied in solution and as cast material. The resulting chiral dye-polymer hybrid material has been accomplished via axial coordination between the zinc (II) metal ion in the core of the porphyrin ring and the pyridyl units of the block-copolymer in a non-coordinative solvent. The supramolecular organization and possible chirality transfer to the hybrid material have been studied in solution by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Circular Dichroism. The morphology of the chiral and achiral doped polymers has been studied in solid state by Transmission Electron Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy. We show that the nanostructures formed depend greatly upon the nature of the side-chains on the porphyrins, where a chiral group leads to a very homogeneous phase-separated material, perhaps indicating that chiral side groups are useful for the preparation of this type of supramolecular hybrid.

Abstract
We reported a facile and efficient strategy for the construction of polycarbonate-based core-crosslinked redox-responsive nanoparticles (CC-RRNs), which can efficiently regulate the drug loading content and redox-responsive drug release. A series of CC-RRNs for delivery of doxorubicin (DOX) were synthesized by the click reaction between alkyne-bearing amphiphilic block copolymer PEG-b-poly(MPC)n (PMPC) and azide-terminated α-lipoic acid derivative (LA) and 6-bromohexanoic acid derivative (AHE) at different ratios, followed by introduction of crosslinked networks under a catalytic amount of dithiothreitol (DTT). Dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments showed that the CC-RRNs presented more excellent stability over non-crosslinked unresponsive nanoparticles (NC-URNs) under physiological conditions. Interestingly, the DOX loading content of nanoparticles (NPs) increased as the proportion of LA moieties increased, and the maximum value was up to 20.0 ± 0.6%, close to the theoretical value of 23.1%. The in vitro redox-responsive release of DOX and MTT assays confirmed that the ratio of LA-to-AHE of PMPC-based polymers not only determined the ultimate drug release of DOX-loaded CC-RRNs in a reductive environment, but also dominated the cytotoxicity towards HepG2 cells. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLMS) and flow cytometry further proved the enhancement of cellular uptake and tumor accumulation. This facile strategy overcomes tedious fabrication procedures for drug nanocarriers, offers an opportunity for regulating the functionality of NPs, and thus paves the pathway for scale-up production of biodegradable drug carriers with biocompatibility, stability and targetability.

Abstract
Self-assembly behavior of the blends of AB diblock copolymers and C homopolymers in soft confinement is studied by using a simulated annealing method. Polymer solution droplets in a poor solvent environment realize the soft confinement. Several sequences of soft confinement-induced copolymer aggregates with different shapes and internal structures are predicted as functions of the size of confinement, the number ratio of AB diblock copolymers to C homopolymers, the volume fraction of blocks, the selectivity of confinement's surface, the incompatibility between blocks, and the competition between two block-homopolymer interactions. Simulation results demonstrate that those factors are able to tune the morphology of the aggregates precisely. We anticipate the rules achieved here is helpful to fabrication of polymeric particle with predesigned morphology.

Abstract
In this highlight, we discuss the self-assembly of block copolymer (BCP) nanoparticles. We first review the state-of-art of hierarchical structural features of BCP nanoparticles due to 3D geometric confinement, both theory and experiments. Simultaneously, we highlight the applications based on these structural features: the generation of multifunctional hybrid nanoparticles, the fabrication of mesoporous BCP nanoparticles, and applications of using BCP nanoparticles as nanocontainers or nanocargos. Finally, we discuss the challenge in the fabrication and potential applications of nanostructured BCP nanoparticles.
