One-pot synthesis of azabora[6]helicene by a Schiff base forming reaction

Azabora[6]helicene as a new heterohelicene analogue was synthesized by a one-pot reaction of commercially available 2,6-diaminopyridine and benzo[c,d]indole-2(1H)-one and subsequent boron coordination. While the single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis elucidated a helical structure in the solid state, a dynamic helicity inversion was observed in solution.

Density Functional Studies on Photophysical Properties of Boron-Pyridyl-Imino-Isoindoline Dyes: Effect of the Fusion

In this work, to make out the aryl-fusion effect on the photophysical properties of boron-pyridyl-imino-isoindoline dyes, compounds 1-5 were theoretically studied through analyses of their geometric and electronic structures, optical properties, transport abilities, and radiative (k _r) and non-radiative decay rate (k _nr) constants. The highest occupied molecular orbitals of aryl-fused compounds 2-5 are higher owing to the extended conjugation. Interestingly, aryl fusion in pyridyl increases the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level, while isoindoline decreases the LUMO level; thus, 4 and 5 with aryl fusion both in pyridyl and isoindoline exhibit a similar LUMO to 1. Compounds 4 and 5 show relatively low ionization potentials and high electron affinities, suggesting a better ability to inject holes and electrons. Importantly, the aryl fusion is conducive to the decrease of k _IC. The designed compound 5 exhibits a red-shifted emission maximum, low λ_h, and low k _IC, which endow it with great potential for applications in organic electronics. Our investigation provides an in-depth understanding of the aryl-fusion effect on boron-pyridyl-imino-isoindoline dyes at molecular levels and demonstrates that it is achievable.

Rigid, yet flexible: formation of unprecedented silver MB-DIPY dimers with orthogonal chromophore geometry

Unprecedented for BODIPY/DIPY and aza-BODIPY/azaDIPY chemistry, MB-DIPY₂Ag₂ dimers with a twisted chromophore geometry were prepared and characterized by spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and DFT calculations.

Conjugated Polymers Containing Building Blocks 1,3,4,6-Tetraarylpyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole-2,5-dione (isoDPP), Benzodipyrrolidone (BDP) or Naphthodipyrrolidone (NDP): A Review

π-Conjugated organic donor-acceptor (D-A) type polymers are widely developed and used in electronic device. Among which, diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based polymers have received the most attention due to their high performances. The novel chromophores named 1,3,4,6-tetraarylpyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole-2,5-dione (isoDPP), benzodipyrrolidone (BDP) and naphthodipyrrolidone (NDP) are resemble DPP in chemical structure. IsoDPP is an isomer of DPP, with the switching position of carbonyl and amide units. The cores of BDP and NDP are tri- and tetracyclic, whereas isoDPP is bicyclic. π-Conjugation extension could result polymers with distinct optical, electrochemical and device performance. It is expected that the polymers containing these high-performance electron-deficient pigments are potential in the electronic device applications, and have the potential to be better than the DPP-based ones. IsoDPP, BDP, and NDP based polymers are synthesized since 2011, and have not receive desirable attention. In this work, the synthesis, properties (optical and electrochemical characteristics), electronic device as well as their relationship depending on core-extension or structure subtle optimization have been reviewed. The final goal is to outline a theoretical scaffold for the design the D-A type conjugated polymers, which is potential for high-performance electronic devices.

aza-BODIPY synthesis towards vis/NIR functional chromophores based on a Schiff base forming reaction protocol using lactams and heteroaromatic amines

Spectral and physicochemical properties of difluoroboranyls containing N,N-dimethylamino group studied by solvatochromic methods

The solvatochromism of the dyes was analyzed based on the four-parameter scale including: polarizability (SP), dipolarity (SdP), acidity (SA) and basicity (SB) parameters by method proposed by Catalán. The change of solvent to more polar caused the red shift of absorption and fluorescence band position. The frequency shifts manifest the change in the dipole moment upon excitation. The ground-state dipole moment of the difluoroboranyls was estimated based on changes in molecular polarization with temperature. Moreover, the Stokes shifts were used to calculate the excited state dipole moments of the dyes. For the calculation, the ground-state dipole moments and Onsager cavity radius were also determined theoretically using density functional theory (DFT). The experimentally determined excited-state dipole moments for the compounds are higher than the corresponding ground-state values. The increase in the dipole moment is described in terms of the nature of the excited state.

Synthesis and Properties of Covalently Linked AzaBODIPY-BODIPY Dyads and AzaBODIPY-(BODIPY)2 Triads

The azaBODIPYs containing one and two formyl functional groups on the 1,7-aryl groups present at the azaBODIPY core were synthesized over sequence of steps and characterized by mass, NMR, absorption, and electrochemical techniques. The monoformylated and diformylated azaBODIPYs are very useful synthons to prepare a wide variety of new fluorescent compounds. The mono- and diformylated azaBODIPYs were treated with pyrrole under mild acidic conditions followed by column chromatographic purification to afford azaBODIPYs appended with one and two dipyrromethanyl groups. The dipyrramethanyl groups of azaBODIPYs were oxidized with DDQ and complexed with BF₃·Et₂O to obtain covalently linked azaBODIPY-BODIPY dyads and azaBODIPY-(BODIPY)₂ triads. The dyads and triads were characterized in detail by HR-MS, 1D and 2D NMR, absorption, fluorescence, and electrochemical techniques and the structure of one of the triads was deduced by X-ray crystallography. The crystal structure of azaBODIPY-(BODIPY)₂ triad revealed that the two BODIPY units were in perpendicular orientation with azaBODIPY unit. The absorption and electrochemical studies indicated a weak interaction among the BODIPY and azaBODIPY moieties and the moieties retain their independent characteristic features in dyads and triads. The preliminary fluorescence studies supported an efficient energy transfer from BODIPY unit(s) to azaBODIPY unit in dyads and triads.

Synthesis and Spectroscopic Investigation of a Series of Push-Pull Boron Dipyrromethenes (BODIPYs)

A series of push-pull BODIPYs bearing multiple electron-donating and electron-acceptor groups were synthesized regioselectively from 2,3,5,6,8-pentachloro-BODIPY, and characterized by NMR spectroscopy, HRMS, and X-ray crystallography. The influence of the push-pull substituents on the spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of BODIPYs was investigated. Bathochromic shifts were observed for both absorbance (up to 37 nm) and emission (up to 60 nm) in different solvents upon introduction of the push-pull moieties. DFT calculations, consistent with the spectroscopic and cyclic voltammetry studies, show decreased HOMO-LUMO energy gaps upon the installation of the push-pull moieties. BODIPY 7 bearing thienyl groups on the 2 and 6 positions showed the largest λmax for both absorption (635-653 nm) and emission (706-707 nm), but also the lowest fluorescence quantum yields. All BODIPYs were nontoxic in the dark (IC50 > 200 μM) and showed low phototoxicity (IC50 > 100 μM, 1.5 J/cm2) toward human HEp2 cells. Despite the relatively low fluorescence quantum yields, the push-pull BODIPYS were effective for cell imaging, readily accumulating within cells and localizing mainly in the ER and Golgi. Our structure-property studies can guide future design of functionalized BODIPYs for various applications, including bioimaging and in dye-sensitized solar cells.

Zwitterionic BODIPYs with large stokes shift: small molecular biomarkers for live cells

The two first examples of zwitterionic BODIPYs have been synthesized via a simple S_N-Ar methodology. The molecules exhibit excellent optical behavior, such as a large Stokes shift in solution and therefore a very intense emission, and can thus avoid self-quenching. The zwitterionic nature of the molecules was unambiguously elucidated using single crystal XRD studies. The electronic conjugation was investigated by NMR, DFT (NICS (0)) and XRD analysis. Due to their inherent ionic nature, their enhanced solubility in aqueous conditions was exploited for their utility in bio-imaging and cell viability studies. These molecules demonstrate promising localization inside live yeast cells.

Iridium-based emitters containing pendant triphenylene moieties for bluish-green OLEDs with improved efficiency upon thermal annealing

High hole mobility was obtained for iridium complexes bearing triphenylene units, and the annealed emitter shows the best device performance.

Novel Dual BODIPY-Carbazole Conjugates with Various Linkers

Four dual BODIPY-carbazole conjugates (BDPa–d, BODIPY is 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene), with various π bridges, including none, phenyl, thiophene, and furan, were designed and synthesized. The results suggest that the π bridges have significant effect on the thermal, photophysical, and electrochemical properties of the conjugates. BDPc and BDPd, with a five-membered heterocycle as a π bridge possessing more coplanar molecular geometry, exhibit broader and red-shifted absorption with an obvious charge transfer shoulder peak, as well as red-shifted emission. UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry results show that the extension of the π-conjugated system leads to a reduction in the optical gap with a decrease of the LUMO level. All conjugates display remarkable Stokes shifts (107–216 nm) and low fluorescence quantum yields. BDPc and BDPd, which essentially possess broad and intense absorption, and suitable HOMO–LUMO energy levels, are potential candidates for light-harvesting and photovoltaic applications.

Synthesis and spectroscopic properties of β,β'-dibenzo-3,5,8-triaryl-BODIPYs

A series of β,β'-bicyclo-3,5-diaryl-BODIPYs were synthesized from the corresponding β,β'-bicyclo-3,5-diiodo-BODIPYs (1a,b) via Pd(0)-mediated Suzuki cross-coupling reactions in 82-92% yields. Subsequent aromatization with DDQ afforded the corresponding β,β'-dibenzo-aryl-BODIPYs, which showed red-shifted absorptions and emissions in the near-IR range. The dibenzo-appended BODIPYs showed characteristic 1H-, 13C-, 11B- and 19F-NMR shifts, and nearly planar conformations by X-ray crystallography.
