Abstract
The generation of noncovalent intermolecular interactions represents a powerful method to control molecular vibrations and rotations. Combining these with the axial ligand field enforced by the metallocene ligand scaffold provides a dual-pronged approach in controlling the magnetic-relaxation pathways for dysprosium-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Here, we present the first implementation of 2,3,4,5-tetraiodopyrrole (TIPH) in its anionic form [TIP]- as a ligand in three isostructural rare-earth metal complexes Cp*2RE(TIP) (1-RE, RE = Y, Gd, and Dy; Cp* = pentamethylcylopentadienyl), where the TIP ligand binds through the nitrogen and one iodine atom κ2(N,I) to the metal centre. The shallow potential energy surface of the intermolecular σ-hole interaction yields distortions of the interatomic distances at elevated temperatures which were investigated by variable-temperature SCXRD. 1-RE constitute the first crystallographically characterized molecules containing TIP as a ligand for any metal ion, and 1-Dy is the first SMM that employs the TIP ligand. The structural dependence on temperature allowed the mechanism of magnetic relaxation to be explored through ab initio calculations at different temperatures. The electronic influence of the coordinated iodine substituent was probed via magnetometry and cw-EPR spectroscopy on 1-Gd. To further scrutinize the impact of the iodine substituents on the physical properties, a second set of new complexes Cp*2RE(DMP) (2-RE, RE = Y, and Dy) where DMP = 2,5-dimethylpyrrolyl were synthesized. Here, the DMP ligand binds similarly to the TIP ligand and represents an all-hydrocarbon analogue to 1-RE. 2-Dy constitutes the first SMM bearing a DMP ligand.

Abstract
A mononuclear cobalt(ii) complex [C5H8N3]2[CoCl4(C5H7N3)2] (I) was synthesized and structurally characterized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that monometallic Co(ii) ions acted as coordination nodes in a distorted octahedral geometry, giving rise to a supramolecular architecture. The latter is made up of a ½ unit form composed of an anionic element [Co0.5Cl2(C5H7N3)]- and one 2-amino-4-methylpyrimidinium cation [C5H8N3]+. The crystalline arrangement of this compound adopts the sandwich form where inorganic parts are sandwiched between the organic sheets following the [100] direction. More information regarding the structure hierarchy has been supplied based on Hirshfeld surface analysis; the X⋯H (X = N, Cl) interactions play a crucial role in stabilizing the self-assembly process of I, complemented by the intervention of π⋯π electrostatic interaction created between organic entities. Thermal analyses were carried out to study the thermal behavior process. Static magnetic measurements and ab initio calculations of compound I revealed the easy-axis anisotropy character of the central Co(ii) ion. Two-channel field-induced slow-magnetic relaxation was observed; the high-frequency channel is characterized by underbarrier relaxation with U eff = 16.5 cm-1, and the low-frequency channel involves a direct relaxation process affected by the phonon-bottleneck effect.

Abstract
Most 3d metal-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs) use N-ligands or ligands with even softer donors to impart a particular coordination geometry and increase the zero-field splitting parameter |D|, while complexes with hard O-donor ligands showing slow magnetization relaxation are rare. Here, we report that a diamagnetic NiII complex of a tetradentate ligand featuring two N-heterocyclic carbene and two alkoxide-O donors, [LO,ONi], can serve as a {O,O'}-chelating metalloligand to give a trinuclear complex [(LO,ONi)Co(LO,ONi)](OTf)2 (2) with an elongated tetrahedral {CoIIO4} core, D = -74.3 cm-1, and a spin reversal barrier Ueff = 86.9 cm-1 in the absence of an external dc field. The influence of diamagnetic NiII on the electronic structure of the {CoO4} unit in comparison to [Co(OPh)4]2- (A) has been probed with multireference ab initio calculations. These reveal a contrapolarizing effect of the NiII, which forms stronger metal-alkoxide bonds than the central CoII, inducing a change in ligand field splitting and a 5-fold increase in the magnetic anisotropy in 2 compared to A, with an easy magnetization axis along the Ni-Co-Ni vector. This demonstrates a strategy to enhance the SMM properties of 3d metal complexes with hard O-donors by modulating the ligand field character via the coordination of diamagnetic ions and the benefit of robust metalloligands in that regard.

Abstract
Three- vs. two-carbon N-to-N connectors give rise to monomeric, tetrahedral N2S2Co(II) (μeff = 4.24 BM) or dimeric [(N2S2)Co(II)]2 (diamagnetic) complexes, respectively. Differences in the derivative products of the Lewis acid receivers, W0(CO)3 and W0(CO)4, illustrate nucleophilicity of the thiolate sulfur lone pairs in each case, as well as their structural control.

Abstract
To get a better insight into understanding the factors affecting the enhancement of the magnetic anisotropy in single molecule (single ion) magnets, two cobalt(II) complexes based on a tridentate ligand 2,6-di(thiazol-2-yl)pyridine substituted at the 4-position with N-methyl-pyrrol-2-yl have been synthesized and studied by X-ray crystallography, AC and DC magnetic data, FIRMS and HFEPR spectra, and theoretical calculations. The change of the counteranion in starting Co(II) salts results in the formation of pentacoordinated mononuclear [Co(mpyr-dtpy)Cl2]·2MeCN (1) complex and binuclear [Co(mpyr-dtpy)2][Co(NCS)4] (2) compound. The observed marked distortion of trigonal bipyramid geometry in 1 and cationic octahedral and anionic tetrahedral units in 2 brings up a question about the validity of the spin-Hamiltonian formalism and the possibility of determining the value and sign of the zero-field splitting D parameter. Both complexes exhibit field-induced slow magnetic relaxation with two or three relaxation channels at BDC = 0.3 T. The high-frequency relaxation time in the reciprocal form τ(HF)-1 = CTn develops according to the Raman relaxation mechanism (for 2, n = 8.8) and the phonon-bottleneck-like mechanism (for 1, n = 2.3). The high-frequency relaxation time at T = 2.0 K and BDC = 0.30 T is τ(HF) = 96 and 47 μs for 1 and 2, respectively.

Abstract
Three mononuclear cobalt(II) tetrahedral complexes [Co(CzPh2PO)2X2] (CzPh2PO = (9H-carbazol-9-yl)diphenylphosphine oxide and X = Cl (1), Br (2), I (3)) have been synthesized using a simple synthetic approach to examine their single-ion magnetic (SIM) behavior. A detailed study of the variation in the dynamic magnetic properties of the Co(II) ion in a tetrahedral ligand field has been carried out by the change of the halide ligand. The axial zero-field splitting parameter D was found to vary from -16.4 cm-1 in 1 to -13.8 cm-1 in 2 and +14.6 cm-1 in 3. All the new complexes exhibit field-induced SIM behavior. The results obtained from ab initio CASSF calculations match well with the experimental data, revealing how halide ions induce a change in the D value as we move from Cl- to I-. The ab initio calculations further reveal that the change in the sign of D is due to the multideterminant characteristics of the ground state wave function of 1 and 2, while single-determinant characteristics are instead observed for 3. To gain a better understanding of the relationship between the structural distortion and the sign and magnitude of D values, magnetostructural D correlations were developed using angular relationships, revealing the importance of structural distortions over the heavy halide effect in controlling the sign of D values. This study broadens the scope of employing electronically and sterically modified phosphine oxide ligands in building new types of air-stable Co(II) SIMs.

Abstract
We report three CoII-based complexes with the general formula [CoII(L)(X)2] by changing the halide/pseudo-halide ions [X = NCSe (1SeCN); Cl (2Cl) and Br (3Br)]. The obtained τ5 and CShM values confirm a distorted square pyramidal geometry around the CoII ion in all these complexes. In these three complexes, the central CoII ion is situated above the basal plane of the square pyramidal geometry. The extent of distortion from the ideal SPY-5 geometry differs upon changing the coordinating halide/pseudo-halide ion in these complexes. This essentially results in the alteration of the anisotropic parameter D and hence impacts the magnetic properties in these complexes. This phenomenon has been corroborated with the aid of theoretical investigations. All these complexes display field-induced SIM behaviour with magnetic relaxation occurring through a combination of processes depending on the applied dc magnetic field values and dilution.

Abstract
The design and synthesis of high-spin Mn(II)-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have not been well developed to a great extent, as compared with a large number of SMMs based on the other first row transition metal complexes. In light of our success in designing Fe(II), Co(II) and Fe(III)-based SMMs with a high coordination number of 8, it is of great interest to design Mn(II) analogues with such a strategy. In this contribution, four Mn(II) compounds, [MnII(Ln)2](ClO4)2 (1-4) were obtained from reactions of neutral tetradentate ligands, L1-L4, with hydrated MnII(ClO4)2 (L1 = 2,9-bis(carbomethoxy)-1,10-phenanthroline, L2 = 2,9-bis(carbomethoxy)-2,2'-dipyridine, L3 = N2,N9-dibutyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide, L4 = 6,6'-bis(2-(tert-butyl)-2H-tetrazol-5-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine). Their crystal structures have been determined by X-ray crystallography and it clearly shows that the Mn(II) centers in these compounds have an oversaturated coordination number of 8. Their magnetic properties have been investigated in detail; to our surprise, all of these Mn(II) compounds show interesting slow magnetic relaxation behaviors under an applied direct current field, although they have very small negative D values.

Abstract
For single-ion magnets (SIMs), understanding the effects of the local coordination environment and ligand field on magnetic anisotropy is key to controlling their magnetic properties. Here we present a series of tetracoordinate cobalt(ii) complexes of the general formula [FL2Co]X2 (where FL is a bidentate diamido ligand) whose electron-withdrawing -C6F5 substituents confer stability under ambient conditions. Depending on the cations X, these complexes adopt structures with greatly varying dihedral twist angle δ between the N-Co-N' chelate planes in the solid state (48.0 to 89.2°). AC and DC field magnetic susceptibility measurements show this to translate into very different magnetic properties, the axial zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameter D ranging from -69 cm-1 to -143 cm-1 with substantial or negligible rhombic component E, respectively. A close to orthogonal arrangement of the two N,N'-chelating σ- and π-donor ligands at the Co(ii) ion is found to raise the energy barrier for magnetic relaxation to above 400 K. Multireference ab initio methods were employed to describe the complexes' electronic structures, and the results were analyzed within the framework of ab initio ligand field theory to probe the nature of the metal-ligand bonding and spin-orbit coupling. A relationship between the energy gaps of the first few electronic transitions and the ZFS was established, and the ZFS was correlated with the dihedral angle δ as well as with the metal-ligand bonding variations, viz. the two angular overlap parameters eσ and eπs. These findings not only give rise to a Co(ii) SIM showing open hysteresis up to 3.5 K at a sweep rate of 30 Oe s-1, but they also provide design guidelines for Co(ii) complexes with favorable SIM signatures or even switchable magnetic relaxation properties.

Abstract
The observation of single-molecule magnetism in transition-metal complexes relies on the phenomenon of zero-field splitting (ZFS), which arises from the interplay of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) with ligand-field-induced symmetry lowering. Previous studies have demonstrated that the magnitude of ZFS in complexes with 3d metal ions is sometimes enhanced through coordination with heavy halide ligands (Br and I) that possess large free-atom SOC constants. In this study, we systematically probe this "heavy-atom effect" in high-spin cobalt(II)-halide complexes supported by substituted hydrotris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate ligands (TptBu,Me and TpPh,Me). Two series of complexes were prepared: [CoIIX(TptBu,Me)] (1-X; X = F, Cl, Br, and I) and [CoIIX(TpPh,Me)(HpzPh,Me)] (2-X; X = Cl, Br, and I), where HpzPh,Me is a monodentate pyrazole ligand. Examination with dc magnetometry, high-frequency and -field electron paramagnetic resonance, and far-infrared magnetic spectroscopy yielded axial (D) and rhombic (E) ZFS parameters for each complex. With the exception of 1-F, complexes in the four-coordinate 1-X series exhibit positive D-values between 10 and 13 cm-1, with no dependence on halide size. The five-coordinate 2-X series exhibit large and negative D-values between -60 and -90 cm-1. Interpretation of the magnetic parameters with the aid of ligand-field theory and ab initio calculations elucidated the roles of molecular geometry, ligand-field effects, and metal-ligand covalency in controlling the magnitude of ZFS in cobalt-halide complexes.

Abstract
A comprehensive understanding of the ligand field and its influence on the degeneracy and population of d-orbitals in a specific coordination environment are crucial for the rational design and enhancement of magnetic anisotropy of single-ion magnets (SIMs). Herein, we report the synthesis and comprehensive magnetic characterization of a highly anisotropic CoII SIM, [L2Co](TBA)2 (L is an N,N'-chelating oxanilido ligand), that is stable under ambient conditions. Dynamic magnetization measurements show that this SIM exhibits a large energy barrier to spin reversal U eff > 300 K and magnetic blocking up to 3.5 K, and the property is retained in a frozen solution. Low-temperature single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction used to determine the experimental electron density gave access to Co d-orbital populations and a derived U eff, 261 cm-1, when the coupling between the d x 2 - y 2 and dxy orbitals is taken into account, in very good agreement with ab initio calculations and superconducting quantum interference device results. Powder and single-crystal polarized neutron diffraction (PNPD, PND) have been used to quantify the magnetic anisotropy via the atomic susceptibility tensor, revealing that the easy axis of magnetization is pointing along the N-Co-N' bisectors of the N,N'-chelating ligands (3.4° offset), close to the molecular axis, in good agreement with complete active space self-consistent field/N-electron valence perturbation theory to second order ab initio calculations. This study provides benchmarking for two methods, PNPD and single-crystal PND, on the same 3d SIM, and key benchmarking for current theoretical methods to determine local magnetic anisotropy parameters.

Change in the Electronic Structure of the Cobalt(II) Ion in a One-Dimensional Polymer with Flexible Linkers Induced by a Structural Phase Transition. Int J Mol Sci 2022; 24:ijms24010215. Abstract
A new 1D-coordination polymer [Co(Piv)2(NH2(CH2)6NH2)]n (1, Piv is Me3CCO2- anion) was obtained, the mononuclear fragments {Co(O2CR)2} within which are linked by μ-bridged molecules of hexamethylenediamine (NH2(CH2)6NH2). For this compound, two different monoclinic C2/c (α-1) and P2/n (β-1) phases were found at room temperature by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, with a similar structure of chains and their packages in unit cells. The low-temperature phase (γ-1) of crystal 1 at 150 K corresponds to the triclinic space group P-1. As the temperature decreases, the structural phase transition (SPT) in the α-1 and β-1 crystals is accompanied by an increase in the crystal packing density caused by the rearrangements of both H-bonds and the nearest ligand environment of the cobalt atom ("octahedral CoN2O4 around the metal center at room temperature" → "pseudo-tetrahedral CoN2O2 at 150 K"). The SPT was confirmed by DSC in the temperature range 210-150 K; when heated above 220 K, anomalies in the behavior of the heat flow are observed, which may be associated with the reversibility of SPT; endo effects are observed up to 300 K. The SPT starts below 200 K. At 100 K, a mixture of phases was found in sample 1: 27% α-1 phase, 61% γ-1 phase. In addition, at 100 K, 12% of the new δ-1 phase was detected, which was identified from the diffraction pattern at 260 K upon subsequent heating: the a,b,c-parameters and unit cell volume are close to the structure parameters of γ-1, and the values of the α,β,γ-angles are significantly different. Further heating leads to a phase transition from δ-1 to α-1, which both coexist at room temperature. According to the DC magnetometry data, during cooling and heating, the χMT(T) curves for 1 form a hysteresis loop with ~110 K, in which the difference in the χMT values reaches 9%. Ab initio calculations of the electronic structure of cobalt(II) in α-1 and γ-1 have been performed. Based on the EPR data at 10 K and the ab initio calculations, the behavior of the χMT(T) curve for 1 was simulated in the temperature range of 2-150 K. It was found that 1 exhibits slow magnetic relaxation in a field of 1000 Oe.

Abstract
Four new heterometallic complexes combining [MII(H2dapsc)]2+ cations with the chelating H2dapsc {2,6-diacetylpyridine-bis(semicarbazone)} Schiff base ligand and [Cr(CN)6]3- anion were synthesized: {[MII(H2dapsc)]CrIII(CN)6K(H2O)2.5(EtOH)0.5}n·1.2n(H2O), M = Mn (1) and Co (2), {[Mn(H2dapsc)]2Cr(CN)6(H2O)2}Cl·H2O (3) and {[Co(H2dapsc)]2Cr(CN)6(H2O)2}Cl·2EtOH·3H2O (4). In all the compounds, M(II) centers are seven-coordinated by N3O2 atoms of H2dapsc in the equatorial plane and N or O atoms of two apical -CN/water ligands. Crystals 1 and 2 are isostructural and contain infinite negatively charged chains of alternating [MII(H2dapsc)]2+ and [CrIII(CN)6]3- units linked by CN-bridges. Compounds 3 and 4 consist of centrosymmetric positively charged trimers in which two [MII(H2dapsc)]2+ cations are bound through one [CrIII(CN)6]3- anion. All structures are regulated by π-stacking of coplanar H2dapsc moieties as well as by an extensive net of hydrogen bonding. Adjacent chains in 1 and 2 interact also by coordination bonds via a pair of K+ ions. The compounds containing MnII (1, 3) and CoII (2, 4) show a significant difference in magnetic properties. The ac magnetic measurements revealed that complexes 1 and 3 behave as a spin glass and a field-induced single-molecule magnet, respectively, while 2 and 4 do not exhibit slow magnetic relaxation in zero and non-zero dc fields. The relationship between magnetic properties and non-covalent interactions in the structures 1-4 was traced.

Abstract
A combination of inelastic neutron scattering (INS), far-IR magneto-spectroscopy (FIRMS), and Raman magneto-spectroscopy (RaMS) has been used to comprehensively probe magnetic excitations in Co(AsPh3)2I2 (1), a reported single-molecule magnet (SMM). With applied field, the magnetic zero-field splitting (ZFS) peak (2D') shifts to higher energies in each spectroscopy. INS placed the ZFS peak at 54 cm-1, as revealed by both variable-temperature (VT) and variable-magnetic-field data, giving results that agree well with those from both far-IR and Raman studies. Both FIRMS and RaMS also reveal the presence of multiple spin-phonon couplings as avoided crossings with neighboring phonons. Here, phonons refer to both intramolecular and lattice vibrations. The results constitute a rare case in which the spin-phonon couplings are observed with both Raman-active (g modes) and far-IR-active phonons (u modes; space group P21/c, no. 14, Z = 4 for 1). These couplings are fit using a simple avoided crossing model with coupling constants of ca. 1-2 cm-1. The combined spectroscopies accurately determine the magnetic excited level and the interaction of the magnetic excitation with phonon modes. Density functional theory (DFT) phonon calculations compare well with INS, allowing for the assignment of the modes and their symmetries. Electronic calculations elucidate the nature of ZFS in the complex. Features of different techniques to determine ZFS and other spin-Hamiltonian parameters in transition-metal complexes are summarized.

Abstract
Herein, we report on the synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of a four-coordinate mononuclear Co(II) diiodide complex with the 3,5-dimethylpyrazole ligand. A distorted tetrahedral local coordination environment around the central cobalt ion is formed by the two nitrogen atoms of two monodentate pyrazole ligands and by iodide ions. Direct current (dc) magnetic measurements in combination with ab initio SA-CASSCF/NEVPT2 quantum-chemical calculations revealed a strong easy-axis-type magnetic anisotropy with a record value Dexp = -30.58(3) cm-1 of the axial zero field splitting parameter for pseudo-tetrahedral Co(II)-based CoL2Hal2 complexes. Moreover, it is the only complex in this series demonstrating the slow relaxation of magnetization at zero dc field. The Orbach process is shown to be the dominant mechanism of magnetic relaxations in the high temperature range, while the quantum tunneling of magnetization produces the leading contribution to the overall relaxation at temperatures below 4 K.

Abstract
Two 3d transition metal mononuclear complexes, [(FeL2)(ClO4)2]2·CH3CN (1) and (CoL2)(ClO4)2·2CH3CN (2), have been prepared from a rigid tetradentate bpybox (L = 6,6'-bis(2,5-dihydrooxazol-4-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine) ligand. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses together with the help of calculations show that both compounds are octa-coordinate. Direct current magnetic studies reveal their significant magnetic anisotropy. Impressively, field-induced relaxation of magnetism is observed in the two complexes and the apparent anisotropy barriers are 14.1 K for 1 and 21.6 K for 2, respectively. Theoretical calculations reveal that two Fe(II) centers in 1 have small negative D values of -4.897 and -4.825 cm-1 and relatively small E values of 0.646 and 0.830 cm-1, indicating a uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. In contrast, the D and E values in the Co(II) center of 2 are 46.42 cm-1 and 11.51 cm-1, featuring a rhombic anisotropy. This work demonstrates that field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in 3d transition metal complexes with high coordination numbers can be manipulated through rigid ligand design.

Abstract
Magnetoactive coordination compounds exhibiting bi- or multistability between two or more magnetic stable states present an attractive example of molecular switches. Currently, the research is focused on molecular nanomagnets, especially single molecule magnets (SMMs), which are molecules, where the slow relaxation of the magnetization based on the purely molecular origin is observed. Contrary to ferromagnets, the magnetic bistability of SMMs does not require intermolecular interactions, which makes them particularly interesting in terms of application potential, especially in the high-density storage of data. This paper aims to introduce the readers into a basic understanding of SMM behaviour, and furthermore, it provides an overview of the attractive Co(II) SMMs with emphasis on the relation between structural features, magnetic anisotropy, and slow relaxation of magnetization in tetra-, penta-, and hexacoordinate complexes. Abstract
Recently, the choice of ligand and geometric control of mononuclear complexes, which can affect the relaxation pathways and blocking temperature, have received wide attention in the field of single-ion magnets (SIMs). To find out the influence of the coordination environment on SIMs, two four-coordinate mononuclear Co(II) complexes [NEt4][Co(PPh3)X3] (X = Cl-, 1; Br-, 2) have been synthesized and studied by X-ray single crystallography, magnetic measurements, high-frequency and -field EPR (HF-EPR) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Both complexes are in a cubic space group Pa3̄ (No. 205), containing a slightly distorted tetrahedral moiety with crystallographically imposed C3v symmetry through the [Co(PPh3)X3]- anion. The direct-current (dc) magnetic data and HF-EPR spectroscopy indicated the anisotropic S = 3/2 spin ground states of the Co(II) ions with the easy-plane anisotropy for 1 and 2. Ab initio calculations were performed to confirm the positive magnetic anisotropies of 1 and 2. Frequency- and temperature-dependent alternating-current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed slow magnetic relaxation for 1 and 2 at an applied dc field. Finally, the magnetic properties of 1 and 2 were compared to those of other Co(II) complexes with a [CoAB3] moiety.

Abstract
Herein, we test the hypothesis that neutral, heavy-atom stibine donors can increase the extent of spin-orbit coupling on light, 3d transition metal. To this end, we developed a novel synthetic route toward coordinating a paramagnetic 3d metal ion─cobalt(II)─with neutral stibine ligands. Such complexes have not been reported in the literature due to the weak σ donor strength of stibines and the hard-soft mismatch between a 3d metal and a 5p ligand─which herein has been overcome using alkylated Sb donors. Magnetometry of [(SbiPr2Ph)2Co(I)2] (1) reveals that the stibine complex 1 exhibits a higher magnitude D value (D = |24.96| cm-1) than the spectroscopically derived value for the corresponding phosphine complex 3 (D = -13.13 cm-1), indicative of large zero-field splitting. CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations corroborate the experimental D values for 1 and 3, predicting D = -31.9 and -8.9 cm-1, respectively. A re-examination of magnetic parameters across the entire series [(ER3)2Co(X)2] (E = P → Sb; X = Cl → I) reveals that (i) increasingly heavy pnictogens lead to an increased X-Co-X bond angle, which is correlated with larger magnitude D values, and (ii) for a given X-Co-X bond angle, the D value is always higher in the presence of a heavy pnictogen as compared with a heavy halide. Ab initio ligand field theory calculations for 1 (stibine complex) and 3 (phosphine complex) reveal no substantial differences in spin-orbit coupling (ζ = 479.2, 480.2 cm-1) or Racah parameter (B = 947.5, 943.9 cm-1), an indicator of covalency. Thus, some "heavy atom effect" on the D value beyond geometric perturbation is operative, but its precise mechanism(s) of action remains obscure.

Abstract
Treatment of CoCl2·6H2O and tris(pyrazolyl-1-yl)borate tricyanoiron(III) anions at an elevated temperature (55 °C) afforded two less-common pearl-chain-like compounds, {[(TpR)Fe(CN)3CoCl2]2Co(DMF)4}·nDMF (1, TpR = Tp4-Me = hydridotris(4-methylpyrazol-1-yl)borate, n = 1 and 2, TpR = Tp*Me = hydridotris(3,4,5-trimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate, n = 4.5), in which the 4-coordinate Co(II) ions and [(TpR)FeIII(CN)3]- units are alternately bridged by cyanide groups into squares, which are further linked with the 6-coordinate Co(II) ions into an infinite chain. Interestingly, the magnetic study revealed that 1 exhibits a typical single-chain magnet behaviour with an effective energy barrier of 28.0 K, while surprisingly no Glauber dynamics was observed for 2 despite their very similar structures. The variations of the local coordination environments of the cobalt ions and the cyanide linkages were evidenced, and they may account for the significant difference in their magnetic properties related to the global magnetic anisotropy and magnetic exchange of the chain.

Abstract
Two dinuclear complexes [M2(H2L)2](ClO4)4·2MeCN (M = Co for Co2 and Fe for Fe2) were synthesized using a symmetric hydrazone ligand with the metal ions in an N6 coordination environment. The crystal structures and magnetic properties were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The crystal structure study revealed that the spin centers were all in the high-spin state with a distorted octahedron (Oh) geometry. Dynamic magnetic properties measurements revealed that complex Co2 exhibited field-induced single-molecule magnet properties with two-step relaxation in which the fast relaxation path was from QTM and the slow relaxation path from the thermal relaxation under an applied field.

Abstract
A series of six seven-coordinate pentagonal-bipyramidal (PBP) erbium complexes, with acyclic pentadentate [N3O2] Schiff-base ligands, 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis-(4-methoxybenzoylhydrazone) [H2DAPMBH], or 2,6-diacethylpyridine bis(salicylhydrazone) [H4DAPS], and various apical ligands in different charge states were synthesized: [Er(DAPMBH)(C2H5OH)Cl] (1); [Er(DAPMBH)(H2O)Cl]·2C2H5OH (2); [Er(DAPMBH)(CH3OH)Cl] (3); [Er(DAPMBH)(CH3OH)(N3)] (4); [(Et3H)N]+[Er(H2DAPS)Cl2]- (5); and [(Et3H)N]+[Y0.95Er0.05(H2DAPS)Cl2]- (6). The physicochemical properties, crystal structures, and the DC and AC magnetic properties of 1-6 were studied. The AC magnetic measurements revealed that most of Compounds 1-6 are field-induced single-molecule magnets, with estimated magnetization energy barriers, Ueff ≈ 16-28 K. The experimental study of the magnetic properties was complemented by theoretical analysis based on ab initio and crystal field calculations. An experimental and theoretical study of the magnetism of 1-6 shows the subtle impact of the type and charge state of the axial ligands on the SMM properties of these complexes.

Abstract
The first-row transition metal compounds, [MII(L1)2](ClO4)2 (M = Ni (1); Co (2)), have been prepared by treatment of a neutral tetradentate ligand (L1 = N2,N9-dibutyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide) with metal perchlorate salts in MeOH. Both compounds have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography and it was found that the coordination numbers are 6 and 7, respectively. The reaction of 6,6'-bis(2-tbutyl-tetrazol-5-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine (L2) with hydrated FeII(ClO4)2 afforded a 8-coordinate Fe(II) compound, [FeII(L2)2](ClO4)2 (3); however its reaction with hydrated CoII(ClO4)2 resulted in 6-coordinate [CoII(L2)2](ClO4)2. It is interesting to observe field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in the 7-coordinate Co(II) compound 2 and 8-coordinate Fe(II) compound 3, which further supports the validity of designing high coordination number compounds as single-molecule magnets. Direct current magnetic studies demonstrate that 2 has a very large positive D value (56.2 cm-1) and a small E value (0.66 cm-1), indicating easy plane magnetic anisotropy. Consistent with the larger D value, an effective spin-reversal barrier of Ueff = 100 K (71.4 cm-1) is obtained, which is the highest value reported for 7-coordinate Co(II) complexes with a pentagonal bipyramidal geometry. In contrast, 8-coordinate Fe(II) compound 3 exhibits uniaxial magnetic anisotropy.

Abstract
Pure and Co3+-doped BaAl2O4 [Ba(Al1-xCox)2O4, x = 0, 0.0077, 0.0379] powder samples were prepared by a facile hydrothermal route. Elemental analyses by static secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements at the Co K-edge, and X-ray diffraction studies were fully correlated, thus addressing a complete description of the structural complexity of Co3+-doped BaAl2O4 powder. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns indicated that prepared samples were nanocrystalline with a hexagonal P63 symmetry. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) measurements revealed the presence of cobalt in a +3 oxidation state, while the rarely documented, tetrahedral symmetry around Co3+ was extracted from the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) oscillation patterns. Rietveld structure refinements showed that Co3+ preferentially substitutes Al3+ at tetrahedral Al3 sites of the BaAl2O4 host lattice, whereas the (Al3)O4 tetrahedra remain rather regular with Co3+-O distances ranging from 1.73(9) to 1.74(9) Å. The underlying magneto-structural features were unraveled through axial and rhombic zero-field splitting (ZFS) terms. The increased substitution of Al3+ by Co3+ at Al3 sites leads to an increase of the axial ZFS terms in Co3+-doped BaAl2O4 powder from 10.8 to 26.3 K, whereas the rhombic ZFS parameters across the series change in the range from 2.7 to 10.4 K, showing a considerable increase of anisotropy together with the values of the anisotropic g-tensor components flowing from 1.7 to 2.5. We defined the line between the Co3+ doping limit and influenced magneto-structural characteristics, thus enabling the design of strategy to control the ZFS terms' contributions to magnetic anisotropy within Co3+-doped BaAl2O4 powder.

Abstract
Large separation of magnetic levels and slow relaxation in metal complexes are desirable properties of single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Spin-phonon coupling (interactions of magnetic levels with phonons) is ubiquitous, leading to magnetic relaxation and loss of memory in SMMs and quantum coherence in qubits. Direct observation of magnetic transitions and spin-phonon coupling in molecules is challenging. We have found that far-IR magnetic spectra (FIRMS) of Co(PPh3 )2 X2 (Co-X; X=Cl, Br, I) reveal rarely observed spin-phonon coupling as avoided crossings between magnetic and u-symmetry phonon transitions. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) gives phonon spectra. Calculations using VASP and phonopy programs gave phonon symmetries and movies. Magnetic transitions among zero-field split (ZFS) levels of the S=3/2 electronic ground state were probed by INS, high-frequency and -field EPR (HFEPR), FIRMS, and frequency-domain FT terahertz EPR (FD-FT THz-EPR), giving magnetic excitation spectra and determining ZFS parameters (D, E) and g values. Ligand-field theory (LFT) was used to analyze earlier electronic absorption spectra and give calculated ZFS parameters matching those from the experiments. DFT calculations also gave spin densities in Co-X, showing that the larger Co(II) spin density in a molecule, the larger its ZFS magnitude. The current work reveals dynamics of magnetic and phonon excitations in SMMs. Studies of such couplings in the future would help to understand how spin-phonon coupling may lead to magnetic relaxation and develop guidance to control such coupling.

Abstract
The reaction of the redox active 1,2-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene (dpp-BIAN) and iron(II) iodide in acetonitrile led to a new complex [(dpp-BIAN)FeIII2] (1). Molecular structure of 1 was determined by the single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The spin state of the iron cation in complex 1 at room temperature and the magnetic behavior of 1 in the temperature range of 2–300 K were studied using Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements, respectively. The neutral character of dpp-BIAN in 1 was confirmed by IR and UV spectroscopy. The electrochemistry of 1 was studied in solution and solid state using cyclic voltammetry. The generation of the radical anion form of the dpp-BIAN ligand upon reduction of 1 in a CH2Cl2 solution was monitored by EPR spectroscopy.

Abstract
Incorporating radical ligands into metal complexes is one of the emerging trends in the design of single-molecule magnets (SMMs). While significant effort has been expended to generate multinuclear transition metal-based SMMs with bridging radical ligands, less attention has been paid to mononuclear transition metal-radical SMMs. Herein, we describe the first α-diiminato radical-containing mononuclear transition metal SMM, namely, [κ2-PhTttBu]Fe(AdNCHCHNAd) (1), and its analogue [κ2-PhTttBu]Fe(CyNCHCHNCy) (2) (PhTttBu = phenyltris(tert-butylthiomethyl)borate, Ad = adamantyl, and Cy = cyclohexyl). 1 and 2 feature nearly identical geometric and electronic structures, as shown by X-ray crystallography and electronic absorption spectroscopy. A more detailed description of the electronic structure of 1 was obtained through EPR and Mössbauer spectroscopies, SQUID magnetometry, and DFT, TD-DFT, and CAS calculations. 1 and 2 are best described as high-spin iron(II) complexes with antiferromagnetically coupled α-diiminato radical ligands. A strong magnetic exchange coupling between the iron(II) ion and the ligand radical was confirmed in 1, with an estimated coupling constant J < -250 cm-1 (J = -657 cm-1, DFT). Calibrated CAS calculations revealed that the ground-state Fe(II)-α-diiminato radical configuration has significant ionic contributions, which are weighted specifically toward the Fe(I)-neutral α-diimine species. Experimental data and theoretical calculations also suggest that 1 possesses an easy-axis anisotropy, with an axial zero-field splitting parameter D in the range from -4 to-1 cm-1. Finally, dynamic magnetic studies show that 1 exhibits slow magnetic relaxation behavior with an energy barrier close to the theoretical maximum, 2|D|. These results demonstrate that incorporating strongly coupled α-diiminato radicals into mononuclear transition metal complexes can be an effective strategy to prepare SMMs.

Abstract
With the ongoing effort to obtain mononuclear 3d-transition-metal complexes that manifest slow relaxation of magnetization and, hence, can behave as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), we have modeled 14 Fe(III) complexes based on an experimentally synthesized (PMe3)2FeCl3 complex [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2017, 139 (46), 16474-16477], by varying the axial ligands with group XV elements (N, P, and As) and equatorial halide ligands from F, Cl, Br, and I. Out of these, nine complexes possess large zero field splitting (ZFS) parameter D in the range of -40 to -60 cm-1. The first-principles investigation of the ground-spin state applying density functional theory (DFT) and wave function-based multiconfigurations methods, e.g., SA-CASSCF/NEVPT2, are found to be quite consistent except for few delicate cases with near-degenerate spin states. In such cases, the hybrid B3LYP functional is found to be biased toward high-spin (HS) state. Altering the percentage of exact exchange admixed in the B3LYP functional leads to intermediate-spin (IS) ground state consistent with the multireference calculations. The origin of large zero field splitting (ZFS) in the Fe(III)-based trigonal bipyramidal (TBP) complexes is investigated. Furthermore, a number of complexes are identified with very small ΔGHS-ISadia. values indicating the possible spin-crossover phenomenon between the bistable spin states.

Abstract
Introducing both tetrazine radical and azido bridges afforded two air-stable square complexes [MII4(bpztz•-)4(N3)4] (MII = Zn2+, 1; Co2+, 2; bpztz = 3,6-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine), where the metal ions are cobridged by μ1,1-azido bridges and tetrazine radicals. Magnetic studies revealed strong antiferromagnetic metal-radical interaction with a coupling constant of -64.7 cm-1 in the 2J formalism in 2. Remarkably, 2 exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization with an effective barrier for spin reverse of 96 K at zero applied field.

Abstract
The synthesis of 1D cobalt and zinc monometallic and heterometallic coordination polymers (CPs) was carried out applying one-pot synthetic methods by using either supercritical carbon dioxide or ethanol as the solvent. A collection of four 1D CPs were thus obtained by the combination of a metal (or a mixture of metals) with the linker 1,4-bis(4-pyridylmethyl)benzene. The used metallic complexes were zinc and cobalt hexafluoroacetylacetonate, which can easily incorporate pyridine ligands in the coordination sphere of the metal centre. Independently of the used solvent, the precipitated phases involving Zn(ii), i.e., homometallic CP of Zn(ii) and bimetallic CP of Zn(ii)/Co(ii), were isostructural. Contrarily, homometallic CPs of Co(ii) were precipitated as an isostructural phase of Zn(ii) or with a different structure, depending on the used solvent. All the structures were resolved by XRD using synchrotron radiation. In addition, the magnetic properties of the new CPs involving Co(ii) were studied. Remarkably, at low temperatures with the application of an external field, they acted as field-induced single molecule magnets. One-pot synthesis of heterometallic (Zn(ii)/Co(ii)) nodes directing CP magnetic behaviour to single molecule magnets.![]()

Abstract
The combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the magnetic properties of the cobalt(ii) NHC complexes (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene); [Co(CH2SiMe3)2(IPr)] (1), [CoCl2(IMes)2] (2) and [Co(CH3)2(IMes)2] (3) revealed a large easy plane anisotropy for 1 (D = +73.7 cm-1) and a moderate easy axis anisotropy for 2 (D = -7.7 cm-1) due to significant out-of-state spin-orbit coupling. Dynamic magnetic measurements revealed slow relaxation of the magnetization for 1 (Ueff = 22.5 K, τ0 = 3 × 10-7 s, 1000 Oe) and for 2 (Ueff = 20.2 K, τ0 = 1.73 × 10-8 s, 1500 Oe). The molecular origin of the slow relaxation phenomena was further supported by the retention of AC signal in 10% solutions in 2-MeTHF which reveals a second zero field AC signal in 1 at higher frequencies. Compound 3 was found to be an S = 1/2 system.

Abstract
There has been a renaissance in the interdisciplinary field of Molecular Magnetism since ~2000, due to the discovery of the impressive properties and potential applications of d- and f-metal Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) and Single-Ion Magnets (SIMs) or Monometallic Single-Molecule Magnets. One of the consequences of this discovery has been an explosive growth in synthetic molecular inorganic and organometallic chemistry. In SMM and SIM chemistry, inorganic and organic ligands play a decisive role, sometimes equally important to that of the magnetic metal ion(s). In SMM chemistry, bridging ligands that propagate strong ferromagnetic exchange interactions between the metal ions resulting in large spin ground states, well isolated from excited states, are preferable; however, antiferromagnetic coupling can also lead to SMM behavior. In SIM chemistry, ligands that create a strong axial crystal field are highly desirable for metal ions with oblate electron density, e.g., TbIII and DyIII, whereas equatorial crystal fields lead to SMM behavior in complexes based on metal ions with prolate electron density, e.g., ErIII. In this review, we have attempted to highlight the use of few, efficient ligands in the chemistry of transition-metal SMMs and SIMs, through selected examples. The content of the review is purely chemical and it is assumed that the reader has a good knowledge of synthetic, structural and physical inorganic chemistry, as well as of the properties of SIMs and SMMs and the techniques of their study. The ligands that will be discussed are the azide ion, the cyanido group, the tris(trimethylsilyl)methanide, the cyclopentanienido group, soft (based on the Hard-Soft Acid-Base model) ligands, metallacrowns combined with click chemistry, deprotonated aliphatic diols, and the family of 2-pyridyl ketoximes, including some of its elaborate derivatives. The rationale behind the selection of the ligands will be emphasized.

Abstract
A series of quinonoid-bridged dicobalt compounds [(N4Co)2LX](ClO4)2 (1-4) (X = H, Cl, Br and OMe; N4 = 1,4,7,10-tetrabenzyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane) are synthesized and well characterized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that the coordination geometry of one side Co in compounds 1-4 changes from a triangular prism to distorted octahedron with a change in the bridged-ligand substituent. Magnetic measurements show that compounds 1 and 3 exhibit single-molecule magnetic behavior. Magneto-structural analyses indicate that the difference in the relaxation barrier U between the four compounds results from the different orientations of the anisotropy axes of the two Co centers in the molecule.
