Abstract
This review article describes the development of the use of aluminum compounds in the chemistry of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) over the last 14 years. It also discusses the synthesis, reactivity and catalytic applications of intermolecular, intramolecular and so-called hidden FLPs with phosphorus, nitrogen and carbon Lewis bases. The intrinsically higher acidity of aluminum compounds compared to their boron analogs opens up different reaction pathways. The results are presented in a more or less chronological order. It is shown that Al FLPs react with a variety of polar and non-polar substrates and form both stable adducts and reversibly activate bonds. Consequently, some catalytic applications of the title compounds were presented such as dimerization of alkynes, hydrogenation of tert-butyl ethylene and imines, C-F bond activation, reduction of CO2, dehydrogenation of amine borane and transfer of ammonia. In addition, various Al FLPs were used as initiators in polymerization reactions.

Abstract
Gold catalysis has emerged as a groundbreaking field in synthetic chemistry, revolutionizing numerous organic transformations. Despite the significant achieved advancements, the mechanistic understanding behind many gold-catalyzed reactions remains elusive. This Concept article covers the so-called "self-activating" Au(I) complexes, sorting out their pivotal role in gold catalysis. We comment on how Au(I) complexes can undergo self-activation, triggering diverse catalytic transformations without the need for external additives. The most important examples reported so far that underlie the catalytic activity of these species are discussed. This intrinsic reactivity represents a paradigm shift in gold catalysis, offering new avenues for the design of efficient and sustainable catalytic systems. Furthermore, we explore the factors influencing the stability, reactivity, and selectivity of these Au(I) complexes, providing insights into their synthetic utility and potential applications. This area of research not only advances our fundamental understanding of gold catalysis but also paves the way for the development of novel catalytic strategies with broad implications in organic synthesis and the chemical industry.

Abstract
The combination of the ferrocene moiety with gold(I) catalysis remains a relatively unexplored field. In this article, we delve into the synthesis, characterization, and potential catalytic activity of four complexes utilizing both monodentate and bidentate ferrocenyl diphenylphosphane ligands (ppf and dppf), coordinated with two gold(I) metal centers, linked by either chloride or pentafluorophenylthiolate bridging ligands. This leads to the formation of cationic "self-activated" precatalysts capable of initiating the catalytic cycle without the need for external additives. The catalytic activity of these complexes was assessed through a model reaction in gold(I) catalysis, specifically the cyclization of a N-propargylbenzamide to produce an oxazole. In addition, we studied and compared the influence exerted by both the phosphane and the bridging ligand on the performance of these catalysts.

Abstract
The phosphine-borane iPr2P(o-C6H4)BFxyl2 (Fxyl = 3,5-(F3C)2C6H3) 1-Fxyl was found to promote the reductive elimination of ethane from [AuMe2(μ-Cl)]2. Nuclear magnetic resonance monitoring revealed the intermediate formation of the (1-Fxyl)AuMe2Cl complex. Density functional theory calculations identified a zwitterionic path as the lowest energy profile, with an overall activation barrier more than 10 kcal/mol lower than without borane assistance. The Lewis acid moiety first abstracts the chloride to generate a zwitterionic Au(III) complex, which then readily undergoes C(sp3)-C(sp3) coupling. The chloride is finally transferred back from boron to gold. The electronic features of this Lewis-assisted reductive elimination at gold have been deciphered by intrinsic bond orbital analyses. Sufficient Lewis acidity of boron is required for the ambiphilic ligand to trigger the C(sp3)-C(sp3) coupling, as shown by complementary studies with two other phosphine-boranes, and the addition of chlorides slows down the reductive elimination of ethane.

Abstract
Reaction of 2 equivalents of (Me2PCH2AlMe2)2 with [{RhCl(cod)}2] (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) afforded [{κ2P,P-(Me3Al)ClMeAl(CH2PMe2)2}Rh(cod)] (1), which features a κ2-coordinated bis(phosphino)aluminate anion. In compound 1, an Al-Cl substituent bridges to a molecule of AlMe3, which could be removed in vacuo to provide [{κ2P,P-ClMeAl(CH2PMe2)2}Rh(cod)] (2). By contrast, reaction of 1 equiv. of (Me2PCH2AlMe2)2 with [{RhCl(cod)}2] yielded [Rh(cod)(μ-Cl)(Me2PCH2AlMe2)] (3) as the major product, where the phosphine donor of an intact Me2PCH2AlMe2 ligand is coordinated to rhodium and a chloride ligand bridges between Rh and Al. [Rh(cod)(μ-Cl)(Me2PCH2AlClMe)] (3A) and 2 were also formed as minor products. The aforementioned reactions were carried out in benzene or toluene, whereas the 1 : 1 reaction of (Me2PCH2AlMe2)2 with [{RhCl(cod)}2] in THF afforded [{Rh(μ-CH2PMe2)(cod)}2] (4). Reactions of (Me2PCH2AlMe2)2 with iridium(I), gold(I) and platinum(II) precursors were also explored. A 1 : 1 reaction of (Me2PCH2AlMe2)2 with [{IrCl(cod)}2] afforded [{κ2P,P-Cl2Al(CH2PMe2)2}Ir(cod)] (5) as one of two major phosphine-containing products; unlike 3, this compound features two chlorine substituents on aluminium. For comparison, the rhodium analogue of 5, [{κ2P,P-Cl2Al(CH2PMe2)2}Rh(cod)] (6), was also synthesized via the 1 : 1 reaction of {ClAl(CH2PMe2)2}2 with [{RhCl(cod)}2]. Reactions of (Me2PCH2AlMe2)2 with [AuCl(CO)] or [PtCl2(cod)] also resulted in chloride-methyl group exchange between the transition metal and aluminium. However, these reactions generated free (Me2PCH2AlClMe)2 accompanied by gold and ethane, or [PtMe2(cod)], respectively. Reaction of 1.5 equivalents of (Me2PCH2AlMe2)2 with [PtMe2(cod)] at 75 °C afforded zwitterionic [(PtMe{μ-κ1P:κ2P,P-MeAl(CH2PMe2)3})2] (7) which features two tris(phosphino)aluminate anions bridging between PtMe units. Compounds 1-2, 3/3A, 4-7 and (Me2PCH2AlClMe)2 were crystallographically characterized.

Abstract
![]()
The reaction of the hexahydride OsH6(PiPr3)2 with a P,Ge,P-germylene-diphosphine
affords
an osmium tetrahydride derivative bearing a Ge,P-chelate, which arises
from the hydrogenolysis of a P–C(sp3) bond. This
Os(IV)–Ge(II) compound is a pioneering example of a bifunctional
catalyst based on the coordination of a σ-donor acid, which
is active in the dehydrogenation of formic acid to H2 and CO2. The kinetics
of the dehydrogenation, the characterization of the resting state
of the catalysis, and DFT calculations point out that the hydrogen
formation (the fast stage) exclusively occurs on the coordination
sphere of the basic metal center, whereas both the metal center and
the σ-donor Lewis acid cooperatively participate in the CO2 release (the rate-determining step). During the process,
the formate group pivots around the germanium to approach its hydrogen
atom to the osmium center, which allows its transfer to the metal
and the CO2 release. An alternative
class of bifunctional catalysts can be assembled
by coordination of σ-donor Lewis acids to platinum-group-metal
basic fragments. In contrast to what happens with the previously reported
bifunctional catalysts, this design allows enhancing the basicity
of the base and the acidity of the acid. According to this, a bifunctional
catalyst for the dehydrogenation of formic acid, based on an osmium(IV)-germylene
cooperative system, has been prepared and the mechanism of the catalysis
established.

Abstract
Density functional theory calculations have been performed on metallatranes featuring a group 13 elements at the bridgehead position to understand the factors that influence the nature of the M···Z (M = Fe, Co, Ni; Z = Al, Ga, In) interaction present in these complexes and the resultant reactivity at the metal center. The strength of the M···Z interaction increases with the increase in the size and polarizability of the bridgehead group 13 elements. The calculated reaction free energies (ΔG° values) for binding of different Lewis bases to the metallatranes are found to be significantly more exergonic for the larger In(III) ions. Quantum theory of atoms in molecules calculations reveal the covalent nature of the M···Z interactions, while the EDA-NOCV analysis indicates the strong binding ability of these metallatranes not only to different σ-donor and π-acceptor ligands but also to relatively inert species, such as N2.

Abstract
The phosphine-borane iPr2P(o-C6H4)BFXyl2 (Fxyl = 3,5-(F3C)2C6H3) was found to react with gold(i) alkynyl and vinyl complexes via an original 1,1-phosphaboration process. Zwitterionic complexes resulting from Au to B transmetallation have been authenticated as key intermediates. X-ray diffraction analyses show that the alkynyl-borate moiety remains pendant while the vinyl-borate is side-on coordinated to gold. According to DFT calculations, the phosphaboration then proceeds in a trans stepwise manner via decoordination of the phosphine, followed by anti nucleophilic attack to the π-CC bond activated by gold. The boron center acts as a relay and tether for the organic group.

Abstract
Anionic molecular models for nonhydrolyzed and partially hydrolyzed aluminum and gallium framework sites on silica, M[OSi(OtBu)3 ]4 - and HOM[OSi(OtBu)3 ]3 - (where M=Al or Ga), were synthesized from anionic chlorides Li{M[OSi(OtBu)3 ]3 Cl} in salt metathesis reactions. Sequestration of lithium cations with [12]crown-4 afforded charge-separated ion pairs composed of monomeric anions M[OSi(OtBu)3 ]4 - with outer-sphere [([12]crown-4)2 Li]+ cations, and hydroxides {HOM[OSi(OtBu)3 ]3 } with pendant [([12]crown-4)Li]+ cations. These molecular models were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. Upon treatment of monomeric [([12]crown-4)Li]{HOM[OSi(OtBu)3 ]3 } complexes with benzyl alcohol, benzyloxide complexes were formed, modeling a possible pathway for the formation of active sites for Meerwin-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) transfer hydrogenations with Al/Ga-doped silica catalysts.

Abstract
The dative Pd→B interaction in a series of RDPBR’ Pd0 and PdII complexes (RDPBR’=(o‐PR2C6H4)2BR’, diphosphinoborane) was analyzed using XRD, 11B NMR spectroscopy and NBO/NLMO calculations. The borane acceptor discriminates between the oxidation state PdII and Pd0, stabilizing the latter. Reaction of lithium amides with [(RDPBR’)PdII(4‐NO2C6H4)I] chemoselectively yields the C−N coupling product. DFT modelling indicates no significant impact of PdII→B coordination on the inner‐sphere reductive elimination rate.

Abstract
A new mode of bond activation involving M→Z interactions is disclosed. Coordination to transition metals as σ-acceptor ligands was found to enable the activation of fluorosilanes, opening the way to the first transition-metal-catalyzed Si-F bond activation. Using phosphines as directing groups, sila-Negishi couplings were developed by combining Pd and Ni complexes with external Lewis acids such as MgBr2. Several key catalytic intermediates have been authenticated spectroscopically and crystallographically. Combined with DFT calculations, all data support cooperative activation of the fluorosilane via Pd/Ni→Si-F→Lewis acid interaction with conversion of the Z-type fluorosilane ligand into an X-type silyl moiety.

Abstract
The role of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) as ligands in gold(i) catalyzed-reactions has been computationally investigated by using state-of-the-art density functional theory calculations. To this end, the nature of (P,B)-FLP-transition metal interactions in different gold(i)-complexes has been first explored in detail with the help of the energy decomposition analysis method, which allowed us to accurately quantify the so far poorly understood AuB interactions present in these species. The impact of such interactions on the catalytic activity of gold(i)-complexes has been then evaluated by performing the Au(i)-catalyzed hydroarylation reaction of phenylacetylene with mesitylene. With the help of the activation strain model of reactivity, the factors governing the higher activity of Au(i)-complexes having a FLP as a ligand as compared to that of the parent PPh3 system have also been quantitatively identified.

Abstract
A PAlP pincer ligand derived from 2-diphenylphosphino-6-isopropylphenol was synthesized. The Lewis acidity of the Al center of the ligand was evaluated with coordination of (O)PEt3. A zwitterionic rhodium-aluminum heterobimetallic complex bearing the PAlP ligand was synthesized through its complexation with [RhCl(nbd)]2. Moreover, reduction of the zwitterionic rhodium-aluminum complex with KC8 afforded heterobimetallic complexes bearing an X-type PAlP pincer ligand.

Abstract
Al/P- and Ga/P-based frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) reacted with an azirine under mild conditions under cleavage of the heterocycle on two different positions. Opening of the C-C bond yielded an unusual nitrile-ylide adduct in which a C-N moiety coordinated to the FLP backbone. Cleavage of a C-N bond afforded the thermodynamically favored enamine adduct with the N atom bound to P and Al or Ga atoms. Ring closure was observed upon treatment of an Al/P FLP with electronically unsaturated substrates (4-(1-cyclohexenyl)-1-aza-but-1-en-3-ynes) and yielded by C-N bond formation hexahydroquinoline derivatives, which coordinated to the FLP through P-C and Al-C bonds. Diphenylcyclopropenone showed a diverse reactivity, which depending on steric shielding and the polarizing effect of Al or Ga atoms afforded different products. An AltBu2 /P FLP yielded an adduct with the C=O group coordinated to P and Al. The dineopentyl derivative gave an equilibrium mixture consisting of a similar product and a simple adduct with O bound to Al and a three-coordinate P atom. Both compounds co-crystallize. The Ga/P FLP only formed the simple adduct with the same substrate. Rearrangement resulted in all cases in C3 -ring cleavage and migration of a mesityl group from P to a former ring C atom by C-C bond formation. Diphenylthiocyclopropenone (evidence for the presence of P=C bonds) and an imine derivative afforded similar products.

Abstract
The unique Rh-Al bond in recently synthesized Rh(PAlP) 1 {PAlP = pincer-type diphosphino-aluminyl ligand Al[NCH2(P iPr2)]2(C6H4)2NMe} was investigated using the DFT method. Complex 1 has four doubly occupied nonbonding d orbitals on the Rh atom and one Rh d orbital largely participating in the Rh-Al bond which exhibits considerably large bonding overlap between Rh and Al atoms like in a covalent bond. Interestingly, Rhδ--Alδ+ polarization is observed in the bonding MO of 1, which is reverse to Rhδ+-Eδ- (E = coordinating atom) polarization found in a usual coordinate bond. This unusual polarization arises from the presence of the Al valence orbital at significantly higher energy than the Rh valence orbital energy. Characteristic features of 1 are further unveiled by comparing 1 with similar Rh complexes RhL(PMe3)2 (2 for L = AlMe2, 3 for L = Al(NMe2)2, 4 for L = BMe2, 5 for L = SiMe3, 6 for L = SiH3, 7 for L = CH3, 8 for L = OMe, and 9 for L = Cl). As expected, 7, 8, and 9 exhibit usual Rhδ+-Eδ- polarization (E = coordinating atom) in the Rh-E bonding MO. On the other hand, the reverse Rhδ--Eδ+ polarization is observed in the Rh-E bonding MOs of 2-5 like in 1, while the Rh-Si bond is polarized little in 6. These results are clearly understood in terms of the valence orbital energy of the ligand. Because the LUMO of 1 mainly consists of the Rh 4dσ, 5s, and 5p orbitals and the Al 3s and 3p orbitals, both Rh and Al atoms play the role of coordinating site for a substrate bearing a lone pair orbital. For instance, NH3 and pyridine coordinate to both Al and Rh atoms with considerably large binding energy. PAlP exhibits significantly strong trans influence, which is as strong as that of SiMe3 but moderately weaker than that of BMe2. The trans influence of these ligands is mainly determined by the valence orbital energy of the ligand and the covalent bond radius of the coordinating E atom.

Abstract
The P/B FLP 6, formed by the 1,1-hydroboration of dimesitylphosphino(trimethylsilyl)acetylene with HB(C6F5)2 forms the Au(i)X complexes 9a (X: Cl) and 10a (X: NTf2), respectively. Both show marked AuB interactions. The P/B FLP isomer 8, featuring the bulky SiMe3 substituent at the carbon adjacent to boron forms gold complexes 9b and 10b, both of which show weaker AuB interactions. Complex 10a was employed in the catalytic hydroamination of a series of alkynes with p-toluidine. Complexes 9 and 10 were characterized by X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
The Al/P-based frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) Mes2 P-C(AltBu)2 =C(H)Ph (1; Mes=mesityl) reacted as an efficient two-electron reductant with benzil to afford a cis-enediolate that was coordinated to the FLP through P-O and Al-O bonds and the formation of a seven-membered heterocycle (2). The phosphorus atom is oxidised from +III to +V. Similar heterocycles (3 a to 3 f) were formed if 1 was treated with various enones (acrolein, acrylate, acrylamide). The resulting enolates are bound to the FLP through P-C and Al-O bonds. Cyclopropenone gave an adduct (4) with the C=O bond coordinated by P and Al. Ynones gave a fascinating variety of different structures. 1,3-Diphenylprop-2-yn-1-one afforded a remarkable allene-type moiety with two cumulated C=C bonds (5); 3-hexyn-2-one yielded a ligand with two conjugated C=C bonds by C-H bond activation at the carbonyl methyl group (7); and 4-(trimethylsilyl)-3-butyn-2-one reacted by C-H bond cleavage, formation of an enolate group with a terminal C=C bond, and shift of the proton to the P atom (8). The C≡C bond was not affected. Allene compound 5 rearranged at elevated temperature and in daylight through the formation of a tricyclic compound by C-H bond activation and C-C bond formation. DFT calculations on this unusual rearrangement suggest insertion of the central allene C atom into the C-H bond of a methyl group and the intermediate formation of a C3 ring.

Abstract
Hydroalumination of R-P(H)-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-tBu with bulky H-Al[CH(SiMe3)2]2 afforded the new P-H functionalized Al/P-based frustrated Lewis pair R-P(H)-C[[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)-tBu]-AlR2 [R = CH(SiMe3)2; FLP 7]. A weak adduct of 7 with benzonitrile (8) was detected by NMR spectroscopy, but could not be isolated. tert-Butyl isocyanide afforded a similar, but isolable adduct (9), in which the isocyanide C atom was coordinated to aluminium. The unique reactivity of 7 became evident from its reactions with the heteroatom substituted nitriles PhO-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N, PhCH2S-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N and H8C4N-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N. Hydrophosphination of the C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N triple bonds afforded imines at room temperature which were coordinated to the FLP by Al-N and P-C bonds to yield AlCPCN heterocycles (10 to 12). These processes depend on substrate activation by the FLP. Diphenylcyclopropenone and its sulphur derivative reacted with 7 by addition of the P-H bond to a C-C bond of the strained C3 ring and ring opening to afford the fragment (Z)-Ph-C(H)[double bond, length as m-dash]C(Ph)-C-X-Al (X = O, S). The C-O or C-S groups were coordinated to the FLP to yield AlCPCX heterocycles (13 and 14). The thiocarbonyl derived compound 14 contains an internally stabilized phosphenium cation with a localized P[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond, a trigonal planar coordinated P atom and a short P[double bond, length as m-dash]C distance (168.9 pm). Insight into formation mechanisms, the structural and energetic properties of FLP 7 and compounds 13 and 14 was gained by quantum chemical DFT calculations.

Abstract
In this work, we explored the coordination properties of the geminal phosphinoborane tBu2PCH2BPh2 (2) toward different gold(I) precursors. The reaction of 2 with an equimolar amount of the sulfur-based complex (Me2S)AuCl resulted in displacement of the SMe2 ligand and formation of linear phosphine gold(I) chloride 3. Using an excess of ligand 2, bisligated complex 4 was formed and showed dynamic behavior at room temperature. Changing the gold(I) metal precursor to the phosphorus-based complex, (Ph3P)AuCl impacted the coordination behavior of ligand 2. Namely, the reaction of ligand 2 with (Ph3P)AuCl led to the heterolytic cleavage of the gold-chloride bond, which is favored over PPh3 ligand displacement. To the best of our knowledge, 2 is the first example of a P/B-ambiphilic ligand capable of cleaving the gold-chloride bond. The coordination chemistry of 2 was further analyzed by density functional theory calculations.

Abstract
Direct structural evidence for group 11 metal-mediated B-B bond activation was obtained from reactions of tri(tert-butyl)azadiboriridine (1) with AuCl(L) complexes. The AuCl(SMe2) reaction afforded [η2-B,B-B(tBu)N(tBu)B(tBu)]AuCl (2) by ligand displacement. More donating phosphines as co-ligands led to B-B bond cleavage accompanied by either halide or L migration to form boron-gold complexes 3 (L = PPh3) and 4 (L = PMe3). A similar product 5, which is isostructural to 4, was obtained by the addition of dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) to 2-4. Complexes 2-5 constitute rare examples of metal complexes bearing two Lewis acidic centres. The effect of the boryl ligand was demonstrated in the formation of a gold(i) complex 6 bearing a 5-membered heterocycle from 3 and tert-butylisonitrile. Plausible reaction mechanisms that led to these complexes and their bonding situation were explored computationally at the DFT level.

Abstract
Using the diphosphinoborane, (PPh2)2BMes (Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H3), we report the first examples of η3-P,B,P-ligated complexes using Ni(0) and Pt(ii). Reaction of (PPh2)2BMes with Ni(COD)2 or Pt(COD)Me2 (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) results in gradual COD displacement to give [η3-P,B,P-(PPh2)2BMes]Ni(COD) (3) or [η3-P,B,P-(PPh2)2BMes]Pt(CH3)2 (6). Complex 3 serves as a versatile Ni-containing synthon for the preparation of square planar or tetrahedral Ni(0) complexes. Notably, the M-B interaction in these systems is non-negligible - with coordination resulting in an upfield shift of ca. 80 ppm in the 11B NMR spectrum. We also show that treatment of the PtIV halide precursor, [PtMe3I]4 with this ligand framework results in migration of X-type ligands (CH3- and I-) to boron and reductive elimination of ethane (C2H6) to give a distorted square planar zwitterionic PtII complex, Pt[κ2-P,P-(PPh2)2B(Mes)(CH3)][κ2-P,P-(PPh2)2B(Mes)(I)] (10). This reactivity suggests the feasibility of (PPh2)2BMes-ligand-induced labilization of M-X ligands.

Abstract
With the synthesis of ortho-phenylene phosphino-tritylium cations as an objective, we generated (2-lithiophenyl)diphenylphosphine and (2-lithiophenyl)di-isopropylphosphine and allowed these organolithium reagents to react with benzophenone. The resulting phosphino-triarylcarbinols were allowed to react with HBF4 in the presence of trifluoroacetic anhydride in order to generate the corresponding cations. Instead of the targeted ortho-phenylene phosphino-tritylium, the cations formed in these reactions were identified as the four-membered phosphonium species 7,7-bis(phenyl)-8,8-bis(phenyl)-7-phosphoniabicyclo[4.2.0]octa-1,3,5-triene (3+) and 7,7-bis(phenyl)-8,8-bis(isopropyl)-7-phosphoniabicyclo[4.2.0]octa-1,3,5-triene (4+), which were both isolated as tetrafluoroborate salts. The structure of these compounds has been confirmed by X-ray analysis. These new cations are thermally unstable and isomerize into the corresponding 5,10-dihydro-5,5-diphenyl-10-phenyl-acridophosphinium (5+) and 5,10-dihydro-5,5-di(isopropyl)-10-phenyl-acridophosphinium (6+) as tetrafluoroborate salts. These reactions suggest the involvement of ortho-phenylene phosphino-tritylium cations, which would be obtained by dissociation of the R3P+-CAr3 bonds in 4+ and 5+This article is part of the themed issue 'Frustrated Lewis pair chemistry'.

Abstract
With the view of developing self-activating electrophilic catalysts, we are now investigating complexes with a Lewis acidic moiety in the immediate vicinity of the transition metal center. Toward this end, we have synthesized a platinum complex in which the metal is connected to a Lewis acidic bis(triflato)stiboranyl ligand. This complex, ((o-(Ph2P)C6H4)2SbOTf2)PtCl (2), which was obtained by treatment of ((o-(Ph2P)C6H4)2SbCl2)PtCl (1) with 2 equiv of AgOTf, is surprisingly air stable. Yet, it promptly reacts with cyclohexylisocyanide to afford the dicationic chlorostibine complex [((o-(Ph2P)C6H4)2SbCl)PtCNCy]2+ ([3]2+) as a bis-triflate salt. Formation of [3]2+ occurs through abstraction of the platinum-bound chloride ligand by the adjacent Lewis acidic antimony center. This halide migration reaction leads to activation of the platinum center. In turn, 2 behaves as a self-activating catalyst in reactions involving alkynes and readily mediates both enyne cyclization and intramolecular hydroarylation reactions, at room temperature, without addition of a chloride abstracting reagent. These results demonstrate that the coordination non-innocence of antimony ligands can be exploited for the purpose of electrophilic catalysis.
