Macrocyclic complexes based on [N⋯I⋯N]+ halogen bonds

New 1-2 nm macrocyclic iodine(I) complexes prepared VIA a simple ligand exchange reaction manifest rigid 0.5-1 nm cavities that bind the hexafluorophosphate anion in the gas phase. The size of the cavities and the electrostatic interactions with the iodine(I) cations influence the anion binding properties of these macrocyclic complexes.

Guest-occupiable space in the crystalline solid state: a simple rule-of-thumb for predicting occupancy

The generally greater degree of thermal motion of guest molecule(s) relative to the host often impedes their accurate modelling in crystal structures. We propose a 'rule-of-thumb' for estimating the maximum number of guest molecules that can be accommodated in a given amount of accessible space in an adequately modelled host structure. A survey of the Cambridge Structural Database was carried out to evaluate the fractional occupancy θ of the accessible space for almost 40 000 solvates involving 20 common solvents. Using widely accessible software tools, the volume of a guest is estimated as its van der Waals surface, while the guest-occupiable space of a potentially porous host is determined as that available to a virtual spherical probe. We propose terminology more appropriate to the supramolecular interpretation of surface typology: the probe-traversable and probe-accessible boundaries as traced out by the locus and surface of a spherical probe, respectively. High-throughput analysis using commercial and free software packages yielded a mean θ = 51.1(4)%, ranging from 45.3(6)% for hexane to 60(1)% for acetic acid.

Solvent exchange in a metal-organic framework single crystal monitored by dynamic in situ X-ray diffraction

Understanding the processes by which porous solid-state materials adsorb and release guest molecules would represent a significant step towards developing rational design principles for functional porous materials. To elucidate the process of liquid exchange in these materials, dynamic in situ X-ray diffraction techniques have been developed which utilize liquid-phase chemical stimuli. Using these time-resolved diffraction techniques, the ethanol solvation process in a flexible metal-organic framework [Co(AIP)(bpy)_0.5(H₂O)]·2H₂O was examined. The measurements provide important insight into the nature of the chemical transformation in this system including the presence of a previously unreported neat ethanol solvate structure.

A new family of anionic organic-inorganic hybrid doughnut-like nanostructures

Solvent diffusion through a non-porous crystal ‘caught in the act’ and related single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations in a cationic dinuclear Ag(i) complex

A few snapshots of a dynamic solvent diffusion process through a seemingly non-porous crystal of a dinuclear, cyclic Ag(i) complex were revealed. These indicate the complexity of the process, which involves not only relocation of the molecules in the crystal lattice, but also conformational adjustments of the metallocycles in response to solvent uptake/release.

macrocycle embrace: encapsulation of fluoroarenes by m-phenylene ethynylene host

We report structural characterization of a new member of m-phenylene ethynylene ring family. This shape-persistent macrocycle also co-crystallizes with hexafluoro-, 1,2,4,5-tetrafluoro-, 1,3,5-trifluoro, and 1,4-difluorobenzene. The four complexes are almost isostructural, and all show the fluoroarene included into the central cavity of the macrocycle. Characterized by multiple short C - H⋅⋅⋅F - C contacts, these inclusion complexes further dimerize in the solid state into a 2+2 assembly, in which the two macrocycles embrace each other by their large hydrophobic groups that are rotated by 60° relative to one another.
