Recent advances in lanthanide-doped up-conversion probes for theranostics

Up-conversion (or anti-Stokes) luminescence refers to the phenomenon whereby materials emit high energy, short-wavelength light upon excitation at longer wavelengths. Lanthanide-doped up-conversion nanoparticles (Ln-UCNPs) are widely used in biomedicine due to their excellent physical and chemical properties such as high penetration depth, low damage threshold and light conversion ability. Here, the latest developments in the synthesis and application of Ln-UCNPs are reviewed. First, methods used to synthesize Ln-UCNPs are introduced, and four strategies for enhancing up-conversion luminescence are analyzed, followed by an overview of the applications in phototherapy, bioimaging and biosensing. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of Ln-UCNPs are summarized.

Gold Nanostars Combined with the Searched Antibody for Targeted Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Therapy

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common cancer in the oral and maxillofacial region. Due to the special physiological and anatomical position of the oral cavity, the disease often has a significant impact on the chewing, swallowing, language, and breathing functions of patients. In recent years, with the development of medical molecular biology, molecular targeted therapy has received increasing clinical attention and has gradually become a new method for the treatment of malignant tumors. In this research, gold nanostars with a high photothermal effect combined with the searched targeted antibody were used for OSCC therapy. We use the data set in the public database and construct a gene co-expression module by weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). It was found that the turquoise module and the midnight blue module had the greatest connection to tumorigenesis. Cytoscape software was used to analyze the important modules, and the top 10 genes of each module were selected; the survival analysis of the top 10 genes was carried out by gene expression profiling interactive analysis (GEPIA), which indicated that these genes (SERPINH1, MMP11, ADAM12, FADS3, SLC36A2, C1QTNF7, SCRG1, and APOBEC2) have statistical significance as key genes that are related to the tumorigenesis of OSCC. Then, the anti-SERPINH1 antibody targeted to SERPINH1 was chosen as the inhibitor and combined with gold nanostars for photothermal assisted targeted therapy. Thus, the searched key genes can be regarded as biomarkers and therapeutic targets for further precise diagnosis.

Application or function of citric acid in drug delivery platforms

Nontoxic materials with natural origin are promising materials in the designing and preparation of the new drug delivery systems (DDSs). Today's, citric acid (CA) has attracted a great deal of attention because of its special features; green nature, biocompatibility, low price, biodegradability, and commercially available property. So, CA has been employed in the preparation of the various platforms to induce a suitable property on their structure. Recently, several research groups investigated the CA-based platforms in different forms like tablets, dendrimers, hyperbranched polymers, (co)polymer, hydrogels, and nanoparticles as efficient DDSs. By considering an increasing amount of published articles in this field, for the first time, in this review, an overview of the published works regarding CA applications in the design of various DDSs is presented with a detailed and insightful discussion.

Lanthanide-Doped Photoluminescence Hollow Structures: Recent Advances and Applications

Lanthanide-doped nanomaterials have attracted significant attention for their preeminent properties and widespread applications. Due to the unique characteristic, the lanthanide-doped photoluminescence materials with hollow structures may provide advantages including enhanced light harvesting, intensified electric field density, improved luminescent property, and larger drug loading capacity. Herein, the synthesis, properties, and applications of lanthanide-doped photoluminescence hollow structures (LPHSs) are comprehensively reviewed. First, different strategies for the engineered synthesis of LPHSs are described in detail, which contain hard, soft, self-templating methods and other techniques. Thereafter, the relationship between their structure features and photoluminescence properties is discussed. Then, niche applications including biomedicines, bioimaging, therapy, and energy storage/conversion are focused on and superiorities of LPHSs for these applications are particularly highlighted. Finally, keen insights into the challenges and personal prospects for the future development of the LPHSs are provided.

Up-Conversion Luminescence Properties of Lanthanide-Gold Hybrid Nanoparticles as Analyzed with Discrete Dipole Approximation

Up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNP) under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation have been well investigated in the field of bio-imaging. However, the low up-conversion luminescence (UCL) intensity limits applications. Plasmonic modulation has been proposed as an effective tool to adjust the luminescence intensity and lifetime. In this study discrete dipole approximation (DDA) was explored concerning guiding the design of UCNP@mSiO₂-Au structures with enhanced UCL intensity. The extinction effects of gold shells could be changed by adjusting the distance between the UCNPs and the Au NPs by synthesized tunable mesoporous silica (mSiO₂) spacers. Enhanced UCL was obtained under 808 nm irradiation. The original theoretical predictions could not be demonstrated to full extend by experimental data, indicating that better models for simulation need to take into account in homogeneities in particle morphologies. Yet, one very certain conclusion resulting from the DDA calculations and experiments is that the absorbance can blue-shift with more Au NPs added and the absorbance can-red shift for samples with enhanced silica sizes in the UCNP@mSiO₂-Au structures. Furthermore, when the DDA model is more consistent with the practical structure (dispersed Au NPs instead of Au shell), the theoretical absorbance occurs almost the same as the practical absorbance. All in all, the DDA could fit the extinction effect of Au perfectly and be suitable for guiding how to design the UCNP and Au.

Temperature-mediated phase transformation, pore geometry and pore hysteresis transformation of borohydride derived in-born porous zirconium hydroxide nanopowders

Development of in-born porous nature of zirconium hydroxide nanopowders through a facile hydrogen (H2) gas-bubbles assisted borohydride synthesis route using sodium borohydride (NaBH4) and novel information on the temperature-mediated phase transformation, pore geometry as well as pore hysteresis transformation of in-born porous zirconium hydroxide nanopowders with the help of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) isotherm and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) images are the main theme of this research work. Without any surfactants or pore forming agents, the borohydride derived amorphous nature of porous powders was stable up to 500 °C and then the seed crystals start to develop within the loose amorphous matrix and trapping the inter-particulate voids, which led to develop the porous nature of tetragonal zirconium oxide at 600 °C and further sustain this porous nature as well as tetragonal phase of zirconium oxide up to 800 °C. The novel hydrogen (H2) gas-bubbles assisted borohydride synthesis route led to develop thermally stable porous zirconium hydroxide/oxide nanopowders with an adequate pore size, pore volume, and surface area and thus these porous materials are further suggested for promising use in different areas of applications.

Core–shell BaYbF5:Tm@BaGdF5:Yb,Tm nanocrystals for in vivo trimodal UCL/CT/MR imaging

PEGylated core–shell BaYbF₅:Tm@BaGdF₅:Yb,Tm nanocrystals have been constructed and successfully applied in UCL imaging, CT imaging and MR imaging.

Versatile properties of CaGd₂ZnO₅:Eu³⁺ nanophosphor: its compatibility for lighting and optical display applications

Red color-emitting CaGd2ZnO5:Eu(3+) (CGZO:Eu(3+)) nanophosphors were synthesized by a facile sol-gel process. The structural and luminescent properties of these phosphors were investigated as a function of annealing temperature and Eu(3+) ion concentration. The orthorhombic phase was confirmed at different annealing temperatures, showing an irregular morphology within the nanoscale range. Photoluminescence (PL) excitation spectra of CGZO:Eu(3+) showed host absorption band (HAB), charge transfer band (CTB), and intense f-f transitions of Eu(3+) in the violet and blue wavelength regions. The CTB intensity increased and the HAB intensity decreased with increasing annealing temperature or Eu(3+) ion concentration. The CGZO:Eu(3+) exhibited a strong absorption in the blue region as compared to the CTB and had a superior property compared to available commercial phosphors. This feature facilitates the fabrication of high color rendering index white light-emitting diodes for display systems. In PL spectra, an intense red emission was observed due to the hypersensitive (5)D0→(7)F2 transition with good asymmetry ratio and chromaticity coordinates. Optimized annealing temperature and concentration of Eu(3+) ions were observed for CGZO host lattice based on the 466 nm excitation wavelength. The cathodoluminescent properties were also similar to the PL results.
