Abstract
A series of naphthalene-diimide (NDI) and perylene-diimide (PDI) connected bis-N-heterocyclic carbene complexes of iridium(III) have been prepared and fully characterized. The analysis of their NMR spectroscopic features, together with their molecular structures show that these species display lone-pair-π interactions between the chloride ligands of the Ir(III) complex and the heterocycles of the NDI/PDI moieties. The detection of this type of interaction in solution is due to the formation of two atropisomers, which are formed as a result of the restricted rotation about the Ir-Ccarbene bond imposed by the (Cl)lp⋅⋅⋅π interaction. Variable-temperature 1H NMR analysis allowed the determination of the strength of this non-covalent interaction, which lies between ΔH=6.6 and 10 kcal/mol. The computational studies performed fully support the experimental findings.

Abstract
In this study, a hybrid composite featuring zeolitic imidazolate framework-8/carbon aerogel (ZIF-8/CA) was synthesized via in situ nucleation and growth of ZIF-8 nanoparticles inside carbon aerogels. The novel material was used as the solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating for the five phthalic acid esters (PAEs) detection by coupling with a gas chromatography–flame ionization detector (GC-FID). Compared with bare carbon aerogel, the ZIF-8/CA presented the best performance, which is attributed to the unique advantages between the high surface area of CA and high hydrophobic properties, the thermal stability of ZIF-8, and their synergistic adsorption effects, such as molecular penetration, hydrogen bond, and π–π stacking interactions. Under the optimized conditions, the as-proposed ZIF-8/CA fiber provided a wide linearity range from 0.2 to 1000 μg L−1 and a low detection limit of 0.17–0.48 μg L−1 for PAEs analysis. The intra-day and inter-day of signal fiber and the fiber–fiber relative standard deviations were observed in the ranges of 3.50–8.16%, 5.02–10.57%, and 5.66–12.11%, respectively. The method was applied to the determination of five PAEs in plastic bottled and river water samples.

Abstract
In this study, a new series of extended linkers containing different polyaromatic chromophores (biphenyl, naphthalene, anthracene, fluorene, 9,9-dimethylfluorene and fluorenone) functionalized with isonicotinoyl moieties have been synthesized by Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions involving isonicotinamide and the appropriate aromatic dibromide. The optimized protocol led to the isolation of the target molecules in good yield and with high purity. These were characterized by 1H NMR, FTIR, MS, and elemental analysis and their solid state structures were solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Electronic absorption and emission spectra were collected both in solution (DMF) and in the solid state. TDDFT calculations were carried out to investigate the effect of the isonicotinoyl moieties on the spectral features of the central chromophores. Although in solution only the linker containing a fluorenone scaffold shows a weak fluorescence, all the isolated linkers turned out to be fluorescent in the solid state, thus paving the way for their use for the fabrication of fluorescent MOFs.

Abstract
Naphthalenediimide derivates are a class of π-conjugated molecules largely investigated in the literature and used as building blocks for metal-organic frameworks or coformers for hydrogen-bond-based cocrystals. However, their tendency to establish halogen-bond interactions remains unexplored. By using a crystalline engineering approach, we report here four new cocrystals with N,N'-di(4-pyrydyl)-naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxidiimide and diiodo-substituted coformers, easily obtained via a mechanochemical protocol. Cocrystals were characterized via NMR, electron ionization mass spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Crystallographic structures were then finely examined and correlated with energy framework calculations to understand the relative contribution of halogen-bond and π-π interactions toward framework stabilization.

Abstract
Anion-π based compounds, materials, and processes have gained significant interest due to the diversity of their aesthetic non-covalent synthons, and thanks to their significance in biological systems, catalytic processes, anion binding and sensing, or the supramolecular organization of hierarchical architectures. While systems based on typical inorganic anions or organic residues have been widely reviewed in recent years, those involving anionic d metal comlexes as the main components have been treated with a rather secondary interest. However, actively exploring the new systems of the latter type we have recognized systematic advances in the field. As a result, in the current review we describe the landscape that has recently emerged. Focusing on the established groups of π-acidic species, i.e. polycarbonitirles, polyazines, polyazine N-oxides, diimide derivatives, fluoroarenes, and nitroarenes, we explore and discuss anion-π crystal engineering together with the structure-property schemes important from the standpoint of charge transfer (CT) and electron transfer (ET), magnetism, luminescence, reactivity and catalysis, and the construction of core-shell crystalline composites.

Abstract
Naphthalenediimides, a class of organic dyes with an expanded π-electron-deficient plane, have attracted considerable interest because of their photoinduced electron transfer from neutral organic moieties to stable anionic radicals. This makes them excellent candidates for organic linkers in the construction of photochromic coordination polymers. Such a photochromic two-dimensional coordination polymer has been prepared using N,N'-bis(pyridin-4-ylmethyl)naphthalene-1,8:4,5-bis(dicarboximide) (DPMNI). In crystallization tubes, upon slow diffusion of an MeOH solution of cadmium perchlorate into a CHCl3 solution of DPMNI, the complex poly[[bis[μ2-2,7-bis(pyridin-4-ylmethyl)benzo[imn][3,8]phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2H,7H)-tetrone-κ2N:N']bis(perchlorato-κO)cadmium(II)] chloroform tetrasolvate], {[Cd(C26H16N4O4)2(ClO4)2]·4CHCl3}n, (I), was obtained. The asymmetric unit contains one Cd2+ cation, two DPMNI ligands, two coordinated ClO4- anions and four CHCl3 solvent molecules. Each Cd2+ cation is interconnected by four DPMNI linkers to generate a neutral two-dimensional naphthalenediimide coordination network with all the ClO4- anions above or below this plane. Strong interlaminar anion-π interactions between the coordinated ClO4- anions and the imide rings of an adjacent layer lead to a three-dimensional supramolecular structure. Compound (I) exhibits reversible photochromic behaviour and photocontrolled tunable luminescence properties, which may originate from the photoinduced electron-transfer generation of radicals in the DPMNI ligand.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as an exciting class of porous materials that can be structurally designed by choosing particular components according to desired applications. Despite the wide interest in and many potential applications of MOFs, such as in gas storage, catalysis, sensing and drug delivery, electrical semiconductivity and its control is still rare. The use and fabrication of electronic devices with MOF-based components has not been widely explored, despite significant progress of these components made in recent years. Here we report the synthesis and properties of a new highly crystalline, electrochemically active, cobalt and naphthalene diimide-based MOF that is an efficient electrical semiconductor and has a broad absorption spectrum, from 300 to 2500 nm. Its semiconductivity was determined by direct voltage bias using a four-point device, and it features a wavelength dependant photoconductive-photoresistive dual behaviour, with a very high responsivity of 2.5 × 105 A W-1.
