Enhanced photocatalytic and electrochemical performance of hydrothermally prepared NiO-doped Co nanocomposites

In this study, we synthesize nanostructured nickel oxide (NiO) and doped cobalt (Co) by combining nickel(II) chloride hexahydrate (NiCl2.6H2O) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as initial substances. We analyzed the characteristics of the product nanostructures, including their structure, optical properties, and magnetic properties, using various techniques such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometers (VSM). The NiO nanoparticles doped with Co showed photocatalytic activity in degrading methylene blue (MB) dye in aqueous solutions. We calculated the degradation efficiencies by analyzing the UV-Vis absorption spectra at the dye's absorption wavelength of 664 nm. It was observed that the NiO-doped Co nanoparticles facilitated enhanced recombination and migration of active elements, which led to more effective degradation of organic dyes during photocatalysis. We also assessed the electrochemical properties of the materials using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and impedance spectroscopy in a 1 mol% NaOH solution. The NiO-modified electrode exhibited poor voltammogram performance due to insufficient contact between nanoparticles and the electrolyte solution. In contrast, the uncapped NiO's oxidation and reduction cyclic voltammograms displayed redox peaks at 0.36 and 0.30 V, respectively.

CoFeBP Micro Flowers (MFs) for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction and Oxygen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalysts

Hydrogen is one of the most promising green energy alternatives due to its high gravimetric energy density, zero-carbon emissions, and other advantages. In this work, a CoFeBP micro-flower (MF) electrocatalyst is fabricated as an advanced water-splitting electrocatalyst by a hydrothermal approach for hydrogen production with the highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The fabrication process of the CoFeBP MF electrocatalyst is systematically optimized by thorough investigations on various hydrothermal synthesis and post-annealing parameters. The best optimized CoFeBP MF electrode demonstrates HER/OER overpotentials of 20 mV and 219 mV at 20 mA/cm2. The CoFeBP MFs also exhibit a low 2-electrode (2-E) cell voltage of 1.60 V at 50 mA/cm2, which is comparable to the benchmark electrodes of Pt/C and RuO2. The CoFeBP MFs demonstrate excellent 2-E stability of over 100 h operation under harsh industrial operational conditions at 60 °C in 6 M KOH at a high current density of 1000 mA/cm2. The flower-like morphology can offer a largely increased electrochemical active surface area (ECSA), and systematic post-annealing can lead to improved crystallinity in CoFeBP MFs.

Shape-Controlled Iron-Paraffin Composites as γ- and X-ray Shielding Materials Formable by Warmth-of-Hands-Derived Plasticity

The design of shielding materials against ionizing radiation while simultaneously displaying enhanced multifunctional characteristics remains challenging. Here, for the first time, we present moldable paraffin-based iron nano- and microcomposites attenuating γ- and X-radiation. The moldability was gained by the warmth-of-hands-driven plasticity, which allowed for obtaining a specific shape of the composites at room temperature. The manufactured composites contained iron particles of various sizes, ranging from 22 nm to 63 μm. The target materials were widely characterized using XRD, NMR, Raman, TGA, SEM, and EDX. In the case of microcomposites, the shielding properties were developed at two concentrations: 10 and 50 wt %. The statistically significant results indicate that the iron particle size has a negligible effect on the shielding properties of the nano- and microcomposites. On the other hand, the higher iron particle contents significantly affected the attenuating ability, which emerged even as superior to the elemental aluminum in the X-ray range: at a 70 kV anode voltage, the half value layer was 6.689, 1.882, and 0.462 cm for aluminum, paraffin + 10 wt % Fe 3.5-6.5 μm, and paraffin + 50 wt % Fe 3.5-6.5 μm microcomposites, respectively. Importantly, the elaborated methodology-in situ cross-verified in the hospital studies recording real-life sampling-opens the pathway to high-performance, eco-friendly, lightweight, and recyclable shields manufactured via fully reproducible and scalable protocols.

Unravelling faradaic electrochemical efficiencies over Fe/Co spinel metal oxides using surface spectroscopy and microscopy techniques

Cobalt and iron metal-based oxide catalysts play a significant role in energy devices. To unravel some interesting parameters, we have synthesized metal oxides of cobalt and iron (i.e. Fe₂O₃, Co₃O₄, Co₂FeO₄ and CoFe₂O₄), and measured the effect of the valence band structure, morphology, size and defects in the nanoparticles towards the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The compositional variations in the cobalt and iron precursors significantly alter the particle size from 60 to <10 nm and simultaneously the shape of the particles (cubic and spherical). The Tauc plot obtained from the solution phase ultraviolet (UV) spectra of the nanoparticles showed band gaps of 2.2, 2.3, 2.5 and 2.8 eV for Fe₂O₃, Co₃O₄, Co₂FeO₄ and CoFe₂O₄, respectively. Further, the valence band structure and work function analysis using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and core level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses provided better structural insight into metal oxide catalysts. In the Co₃O₄ system, the valence band structure favors the HER and Fe₂O₃ favors the OER. The composites Co₂FeO₄ and CoFe₂O₄ show a significant change in their core level (O 1s, Co 2p and Fe 2p spectra) and valence band structure. Co₃O₄ shows an overpotential of 370 mV against 416 mV for Fe₂O₃ at a current density of 2 mA cm^-2 for the HER. Similarly, Fe₂O₃ shows an overpotential of 410 mV against the 435 mV for Co₃O₄ at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 for the OER. However, for the ORR, Co₃O₄ shows 70 mV improvement in the half-wave potential against Fe₂O₃. The composites (Co₂FeO₄ and CoFe₂O₄) display better performance compared to their respective parent oxide systems (i.e., Co₃O₄ and Fe₂O₃, respectively) in terms of the ORR half-wave potential, which can be attributed to the presence of the oxygen vacancies over the surface in these systems. This was further corroborated in density functional theory (DFT) simulations, wherein the oxygen vacancy formation on the surface of CoFe₂O₄(001) was calculated to be significantly lower (∼50 kJ mol^-1) compared to Co₃O₄ (001). The band diagram of the nanoparticles constructed from the various spectroscopic measurements with work function and band gap provides in-depth understanding of the electrocatalytic process.

Spin Seebeck Effect in Iron Oxide Thin Films: Effects of Phase Transition, Phase Coexistence, And Surface Magnetism

Understanding the effects of phase transition, phase coexistence, and surface magnetism on the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) in a magnetic system is essential to manipulate the spin to charge current conversion efficiency for spincaloritronic applications. We aim to elucidate these effects by performing a comprehensive study of the temperature dependence of the LSSE in biphase iron oxide (BPIO = α-Fe₂O₃ + Fe₃O₄) thin films grown on Si (100) and Al₂O₃ (111) substrates. A combination of a temperature-dependent anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) and electrical resistivity measurements show that the contribution of the ANE from the BPIO layer is negligible in comparison to the intrinsic LSSE in the Si/BPIO/Pt heterostructure, even at room temperature. Below the Verwey transition of the Fe₃O₄ phase, the total signal across BPIO/Pt is dominated by the LSSE. Noticeable changes in the intrinsic LSSE signal for both Si/BPIO/Pt and Al₂O₃/BPIO/Pt heterostructures around the Verwey transition of the Fe₃O₄ phase and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Morin transition of the α-Fe₂O₃ phase are observed. The LSSE signal for Si/BPIO/Pt is found to be almost 2 times greater than that for Al₂O₃/BPIO/Pt; however, an opposite trend is observed for the saturation magnetization. Magnetic force microscopy reveals the higher density of surface magnetic moments of the Si/BPIO film in comparison to the Al₂O₃/BPIO film, which underscores the dominant role of interfacial magnetism on the LSSE signal and thereby explains the larger LSSE for Si/BPIO/Pt.

Mechanochemically synthesized Fe-Mn binary oxides for efficient As(III) removal: Insight into the origin of synergy action from mutual Fe and Mn doping

Iron manganese oxide resources are widely derived from the geological structure, and their combinations play an important role in the migration and transformation of arsenic. Iron oxide and manganese oxide exist generally in a mixed state in Fe-Mn oxides synthesized via the well studied co-precipitation methods using potassium permanganate and manganese/iron sulfates. Herein, a newly designed Fe-Mn-O compositing oxide with Fe-MnO₂, Mn-Fe₂O₃, (Fe_0.67Mn_0.33)OOH solid solution and FeOOH as the main components, simply through solvent-free mechanical ball milling pyrolusite (MnO₂) and ferrihydrite (FeOOH) together has been reported. Atomic-scale integrations by doping Fe and Mn with each other were detected and an adsorption-oxidation bifunctionality was achieved, where Fe-doped MnO₂ served as oxidizer for As(III) and amorphous/ground FeOOH acted as adsorbent first for As(III) and then As(V) from the oxidization. The maximal adsorption for As(III) could reach 44.99 mg/g and over 82.5% of As(III) was converted to As(V). More importantly, high removal ability of arsenic worked in a wide pH range of 2-10.5%, and 87.2% of its initial adsorption-oxidation capacity could be kept even after 5-cycles reuse for treating 20 mg/L As(III) with a dosage at 1 g/L. Together with the enhanced adsorption capacity by the milled FeOOH, surface electron transfer efficiency of the developed Fe-MnO₂ surrounded with Mn-Fe₂O₃ has been studied for the first time to understand the oxidization effect to As(V). Besides the environment-friendliness of ball milling method, the prepared sample is quite stable without noticeable metal release into solution. Mechanism studies of arsenic removal by the as-prepared Fe-Mn-O oxide provide a new direction for improving the oxidation efficiency of MnO₂ to As(III) based on the widely available cheap Mn and Fe oxides, contributing to the development of advanced oxidization process in the treatment of waste water.

Synergistic Effects of Fe2O3 Nanotube/Polyaniline Composites for an Electrochemical Supercapacitor with Enhanced Capacitance

α-Fe₂O₃, which is an attractive material for supercapacitor electrodes, has been studied to address the issue of low capacitance through structural development and complexation to maximize the use of surface pseudocapacitance. In this study, the limited performance of α-Fe₂O₃ was greatly improved by optimizing the nanotube structure of α-Fe₂O₃ and its combination with polyaniline (PANI). α-Fe₂O₃ nanotubes (α-NT) were fabricated in a form in which the thickness and inner diameter of the tube were controlled by Fe(CO)₅ vapor deposition using anodized aluminum oxide as a template. PANI was combined with the prepared α-NT in two forms: PANI@α-NT-a enclosed inside and outside with PANI and PANI@α-NT-b containing PANI only on the inside. In contrast to α-NT, which showed a very low specific capacitance, these two composites showed significantly improved capacitances of 185 Fg⁻¹ for PANI@α-NT-a and 62 Fg⁻¹ for PANI@α-NT-b. In the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis, it was observed that the resistance of charge transfer was minimized in PANI@α-NT-a, and the pseudocapacitance on the entire surface of the α-Fe₂O₃ nanotubes was utilized with high efficiency through binding and conductivity improvements by PANI. PANI@α-NT-a exhibited a capacitance retention of 36% even when the current density was increased 10-fold, and showed excellent stability of 90.1% over 3000 charge–discharge cycles. This approach of incorporating conducting polymers through well-controlled nanostructures suggests a solution to overcome the limitations of α-Fe₂O₃ electrode materials and improve performance.

Scraps to superior anodes for Li-ion batteries: Sustainable and scalable upgrading of waste rust

The abundant iron rust of no value generated from industrial scraps presents environmental problem and burden. Chemical etching and related methods deployed to convert rust into α-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles, however, have serious shortcomings namely higher chemical consumption and generation of secondary pollution. In an unprecedented illustration, herein the intercalation of ammonium bicarbonate (ABC) as a gaseous bubble template into bulky iron rust is described; formation of ammonium iron carbonate hydroxide hydrate and the reduction of particle size using a simple ball milling method followed by calcination is accomplished. The salient features of ABC, optimization of ratios (rust: ABC), and the ideal calcination temperature were optimized for attaining desirable properties of meso-α-Fe₂O₃ NPs. The electrode obtained at 500 °C delivered a superior reversible capacity of 1,055 mAh g^-1 at 1 A g^-1 over 100 cycles, which is comparable to the best performance reported for meso-α-Fe₂O₃ NPs. The superior electrochemical performance is ascribed to the porous nature of meso-α-Fe₂O₃ NPs maximizing the surface area, ensuring good charge transfer kinetics and enhanced pseudocapacitive contribution. Thus, we believe that the high-energy ball milling (HEBM) process represents a novel route for the scalable recycling of iron rust scraps for promoting the sustainable production of lithium-ion batteries.

Synergistics of Fe3C and Fe on Mesoporous Fe-N-C Sulfur Host for Nearly Complete and Fast Lithium Polysulfide Conversion

The practical deployment of advanced Li-S batteries is severely constrained by the uncontrollable lithium polysulfide conversion under realistic conditions. Although a plethora of advanced sulfur hosts and electrocatalysts have been examined, the fundamental mechanisms are still elusive and predictive design approaches have not yet been established. Here, we examined a series of well-defined Fe-N-C sulfur hosts with systematically varied and strongly coupled Fe₃C and Fe electrocatalysts, prepared by one-step pyrolysis of a novel Fe_x[Fe(CN)₆]_y/polypyrrole composite at different temperatures. We revealed the key roles of Fe₃C and metallic Fe on modulating polysulfide conversion, in that the polar Fe₃C strongly adsorbs polysulfide whereas the Fe particles catalyze fast polysulfide conversion. We then highlight the superior performance of the rational host with strongly coupled Fe₃C and Fe on mesoporous Fe-N-C host on promoting nearly complete polysulfide conversion, especially for the challenging short-chain Li₂S₄ conversion to Li₂S. The electrodeposited Li₂S on this host was extremely reactive and can be readily charged back to S with minimal activation overpotential. Overall, Li-S batteries equipped with the novel sulfur host delivered a high specific capacity of 1350 mAh g^-1 at 0.1C with a capacity retention of 96% after 200 cycles. This work provides new insights on the functional mechanism of advanced sulfur hosts, which could eventually translate into new design principles for practical Li-S batteries.

Spectroscopic studies of MFI and USY zeolite layers over stainless steel 316L wire gauze meshes

The objective of our study was to develop and optimize the in situ synthesis of zeolitic thin coatings with USY (ultrastabilised form of faujasite) and MFI (Model Five) type structure on metallic structured catalysts supports using the hydrothermal method. Thus, obtained zeolitic materials were studied in terms of their prospective activity in selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (SCR of NO_x) with ammonia. Optimization of the preparation method consisted of several steps including: the pretreatment of steel carrier to obtain an adhesive surface, hydrothermal synthesis of zeolites at different conditions and adjustment of the zeolite structure type (MFI vs. USY). As a result, uniform zeolitic layers were deposited on steel supports. Prepared structured supports were ion-exchanged with copper or cobalt precursors to obtain active catalysts and then characterised by various physicochemical methods with a particular reference to the in situ Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Ultraviolet-Visible Diffusion Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS-UV/VIS) and Raman spectroscopy. For CuUSY sample, slightly better catalytic properties are related to higher copper content. In the case of Co-samples, worse catalytic properties in comparison with Cu counterparts might imply from higher concentration of Brønsted acid sites, lower cobalt loading (thus concentration of Lewis acid sites) and the presence of cobalt cation significantly in oxide form (evidenced by Raman, DRS-UV/VIS spectroscopy and by in situ FT-IR sorption studies).

MOF-derived 1D hollow bimetallic iron(iii) oxide nanorods: effects of metal-addition on phase transition, morphology and magnetic properties

It is demonstrated that 1D hollow bimetallic iron oxide nanorods containing Mn, Ru, Ni, La and Ag ions can be obtained regardless of the different values of ionic radius and hardness of metal dopants from NH₄OH-etched MIL-88A MOF particles.

Low temperature fabrication of Fe2O3 nanorod film coated with ultra-thin g-C3N4 for a direct z-scheme exerting photocatalytic activities

We engineered high aspect ratio Fe₂O₃ nanorods (with an aspect ratio of 17 : 1) coated with g-C₃N₄ using a sequential solvothermal method at very low temperature followed by a thermal evaporation method. Here, the high aspect ratio Fe₂O₃ nanorods were directly grown onto the FTO substrate under relatively low pressure conditions. The g-C₃N₄ was coated onto a uniform Fe₂O₃ nanorod film as the heterostructure, exhibiting rational band conduction and a valence band that engaged in surface photoredox reactions by a direct z-scheme mechanism. The heterostructures, particularly 0.75g-C₃N₄@Fe₂O₃ nanorods, exhibited outstanding photocatalytic activities compared to those of bare Fe₂O₃ nanorods. In terms of 4-nitrophenol degradation, 0.75g-C₃N₄@Fe₂O₃ nanorods degraded all of the organic pollutant within 6 h under visible irradiation at a kinetic constant of 12.71 × 10⁻³ min⁻¹, about 15-fold more rapidly than bare Fe₂O₃. Further, the hydrogen evolution rate was 37.06 μmol h⁻¹ g⁻¹, 39-fold higher than that of bare Fe₂O₃. We suggest that electron and hole pairs are efficiently separated in g-C₃N₄@Fe₂O₃ nanorods, thus accelerating surface photoreaction via a direct z-scheme under visible illumination.

The engineered high aspect ratio of Fe₂O₃ nanorods coated with g-C₃N₄ demonstrates z-scheme mechanism, showing the best performance in 4-nitrophenol photodegradation and H₂ evolution.
