Abstract
Inclusion complexes of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and tryptophan (Trp) were synthesized using an antisolvent approach, and fully characterized. Scanning electron microscope images proved the formation of the β-CD/Trp NPs and the powder X-ray diffraction pattern indicated the formation of a crystalline channel-like structure for the β-CD/Trp nanoparticles (NPs). The NPs of a β-CD/Trp inclusion complex were used as a natural stabilizer at the oil/water interface of a Pickering emulsion. Pickering emulsions with an oil to water ratio of 1:1 (v:v) were obtained under high-speed homogenization and different mass ratios of the β-CD to Trp (1:0, 1:0.1, 1:0.25, 1:0.5, 1:1), and at different pH levels (3, 5, 7, 9). At pH 9, when the β-CD:Trp mass ratio was 1:0.1, the β-CD/Trp NPs were hydrophilic, and the oil-in-water Pickering emulsions stabilized by those nanoparticles showed the highest storage stability: 180 days at room temperature. In contrast, when the emulsions were prepared at pH 5 with the weight ratios of either 1:0.1 or 1:1, β-CD:Trp, the nanoparticles were hydrophobic and could be used to stabilize water-in-oil Pickering emulsions.

Abstract
Nanoparticles (NPs) have gained significant attention in recent years due to their potential applications in pharmaceutical formulations, drug delivery systems, and various biomedical fields. The versatility of colloidal NPs, including their ability to be tailored with various components and synthesis methods, enables drug delivery systems to achieve controlled release patterns, improved solubility, and increased bioavailability. The review discusses various types of NPs, such as nanocrystals, lipid-based NPs, and inorganic NPs (i.e., gold, silver, magnetic NPs), each offering unique advantages for drug delivery. Despite the promising potential of NPs, challenges such as physical instability and the need for surface stabilization remain. Strategies to overcome these challenges include the use of surfactants, polymers, and cyclodextrins (CDs). This review highlights the role of CDs in stabilizing colloidal NPs and enhancing drug solubility. The combination of CDs with NPs presents a synergistic approach that enhances drug delivery and broadens the range of biomedical applications. Additionally, the potential of CDs to enhance the stability and therapeutic efficacy of colloidal NPs, making them promising candidates for advanced drug delivery systems, is comprehensively reviewed.

Abstract
To investigate the effect of the molecular size of alkanes and the cavity size of cyclodextrins (CDs) on the formation of interfacial host-guest inclusion complexes, the interfacial tension (IFT) of CD (α-CD, β-CD, γ-CD) solutions against oils (hexadecane, dodecylbenzene) was determined by interfacial dilational rheology measurements. The results show that the "space compatibility" between CDs and oil molecules is crucial for the formation of interface host-guest inclusion complexes. Hexadecane with a smaller molecular size can form host-guest inclusion complexes with small cavities of α-CD and β-CD, dodecylbenzene with a larger molecular size can form interfacial aggregates with the medium-sized cavity of β-CD easily, and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules in kerosene can form inclusion complexes with the large cavity of γ-CD. The formation of interfacial inclusion complexes leads to lower IFT values, higher interfacial dilational modulus, nonlinear IFT responses to the interface area oscillating, and skin-like films at the oil-water interface. What's more, the phase behavior of Pickering emulsions formed by CDs with different oils is explored, and the phenomena in alkane-CD emulsions are in line with the results in dilatation rheology. The interfacial active host-guest structure in the kerosene-γ-CD system improves the stability of the Pickering emulsion, which results in smaller emulsion droplets. This unique space compatibility characteristic is of great significance for the application of CDs in selective host-guest recognition, sensors, enhanced oil recovery, food industries, and local drug delivery.

Abstract
β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) can combine with oil and other guest molecules to form amphiphilic inclusion complexes (ICs), which can be adsorbed on the oil-water interface to reduce the interfacial tension and stabilize Pickering emulsions. However, the subtle change of β-CD in the process of emulsion preparation is easily ignored. In this study, β-CD and ginger oil (GO) were used to prepare the Pickering emulsion by high-speed shearing homogenization without an exogenous emulsifier. The stability of the emulsion was characterized by microscopic observation, staining analysis, and creaming index (CI). Results showed that the flocculation of the obtained Pickering emulsion was serious, and the surface of the droplets was rough with lamellar particles. In order to elucidate the formation process of the layered particles, the GO/β-CD ICs were further prepared by ball milling method, and the X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and interfacial tension analyses found that β-CD and GO first formed amphiphilic nanoscale small particles (ICs) through the host-guest interaction, and the formed small particles were further self-assembled into lamellar micron-scale amphiphilic ICs microcrystals. These amphiphilic ICs and microcrystals aggregated at the oil-water interface and finally formed the Pickering emulsion. In this study, by exploring the formation process and evolution of GO/β-CD self-assembly, the formation process and stabilization mechanism of the β-CD-stabilized GO Pickering emulsion were clarified preliminarily, with the aim of providing a theoretical basis for the development of high-performance CD-stabilized Pickering emulsions.

Abstract
The optical and spectral properties of foams and emulsions provide information about their micro-/nanostructures, chemical and time stability and molecular data of their components. Foams and emulsions are collections of different kinds of bubbles or drops with particular properties. A summary of various surfactant and emulsifier types is performed here, as well as an overview of methods for producing foams and emulsions. Absorption, reflectance, and vibrational spectroscopy (Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy-FTIR, Raman spectroscopy) studies are detailed in connection with the spectral characterization techniques of colloidal systems. Diffusing Wave Spectroscopy (DWS) data for foams and emulsions are likewise introduced. The utility of spectroscopic approaches has grown as processing power and analysis capabilities have improved. In addition, lasers offer advantages due to the specific properties of the emitted beams which allow focusing on very small volumes and enable accurate, fast, and high spatial resolution sample characterization. Emulsions and foams provide exceptional sensitive bases for measuring low concentrations of molecules down to the level of traces using spectroscopy techniques, thus opening new horizons in microfluidics.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are biocompatible, cyclic oligosaccharides that are widely used in various industrial applications and have intriguing interfacial science properties. While CD molecules typically have low surface activity, they are capable of stabilizing emulsions by inclusion complexation of oil-phase components at the oil/water interface, which results in Pickering emulsion formation. Such surfactant-free formulations have gained considerable attention in recent years, owing to their enhanced physical stability, improved tolerability, and superior environmental compatibility compared to conventional, surfactant-based emulsions. In this review, we critically describe the latest insights into the molecular mechanisms involved in CD stabilization of Pickering emulsions, including covering practical aspects such as methods to prepare CD-based Pickering emulsions, lipid encapsulation, and relevant stability issues. In addition, the rheological and textural features of CD-based Pickering emulsions are discussed and particular attention is focused on promising examples for drug delivery, cosmetic, and nutraceutical applications. The functionality of currently developed CD-based Pickering emulsions is also summarised, including examples such as antifungal uses, and we close by discussing emerging possibilities to utilize the molecular encapsulation of CD-based emulsions for translational medicine applications in the antiviral and antibacterial spaces.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are edible and biocompatible natural cyclic compounds that can encapsulate essential oils, flavours, volatile aroma compounds, and other substances. Complexation with CD-based materials improves the solubility and stability of volatile compounds and protects the bioactivity of the core materials. Therefore, the development of CD/volatile compound nanosystems is a key research area in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. This review briefly introduces the main types of natural CD; preparation methods of CD-based materials as carriers for aromatic substances or essential oils; characterisation methods used to calculate the interaction between CDs and volatile aroma compounds; molecular docking and simulation methods; and the application of CD-based nanosystems in different industries. The review aims to provide guidance for relevant practitioners in selecting appropriate CD materials and characterisation methods.

Abstract
Food-grade Pickering high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) stabilized by a mixture of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and sugar beet pectin (SBP) were fabricated for the first time. The factors affecting the microstructures, mechanical properties, and stabilities of the Pickering HIPEs were systematically investigated. The corresponding hybrid particles were also separated and characterized to reveal the formation mechanism. The results indicated that the mixture could induce the formation of HIPEs with an oil phase volume fraction (φ) of 75% using a one-step high-speed shearing process at room temperature. The composition (the mass ratio of β-CD to SBP, Rc/s) and concentration (W) of the mixture had significant effects on the formation and properties of HIPEs. When W ≥ 1.0% and Rc/s = 2:2 or 3:1, HIPEs had smaller oil droplets, higher gel strengths, better centrifugation stabilities and lutein protection effects. The spectral analysis suggested that SBP could adhere to the surface of β-CD particles to form hybrid particles during the homogenization. Compared with native β-CD particles, these hybrid particles had higher ζ-potential absolute values, and the SBP could also increase the viscosity of the aqueous phase, which contributed to the formation and properties of these HIPEs.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are oligosaccharides, comprising 6 (α), 7 (β), or 8 (γ) glucose residues, used to prepare oil-in-water emulsions and improve oil stability towards degradation. In this research, the aptitude of α-, β-, and γ-CDs to form complexes with a supercritical CO2 extracted lycopene-rich tomato oil (TO) was comparatively assessed. TO/CD emulsions and the resulting freeze-dried powders were characterized by microscopy, Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), as well as for their antioxidant activity. Furthermore, carotenoid stability was monitored for 90 days at 25 and 4 °C. Confocal and SEM microscopy revealed morphological differences among samples. α- and β-CDs spontaneously associated into microcrystals assembling in thin spherical shells (cyclodextrinosomes, Ø ≈ 27 µm) at the oil/water interface. Much smaller (Ø ≈ 9 µm) aggregates were occasionally observed with γ-CDs, but most TO droplets appeared "naked". FTIR and DSC spectra indicated that most CDs did not participate in TO complex formation, nevertheless structurally different interfacial complexes were formed. The trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) activity of emulsions and powders highlighted better performances of α- and β-CDs as hydrophobic antioxidants-dispersing agents across aqueous media. Regardless of CDs type, low temperature slowed down carotenoid degradation in all samples, except all-[E]-lycopene, which does not appear efficiently protected by any CD type in the long storage period.

Abstract
β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) was modified using octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) to introduce amphiphilic groups (hydrophilic carboxyl and lipophilic octenyl chains) by esterification under alkaline conditions. The FT-IR results indicated that the OSA-modified β-CD (OCD) showed new absorption peaks of an ester bond and a carboxylate (RCOO-) at 1724 and 1570 cm-1, respectively, confirming the successful preparation of OCD. Then the embedding effects of β-CD and OCD on β-carotene and the emulsifying and antioxidant properties of their inclusion complexes were evaluated. The results of XRD showed that the β-CD (or OCD)/β-carotene inclusion complexes were converted from a cage-type structure to a channel-type structure. AFM and SEM showed that the crystal characteristics and surface morphologies of the inclusion complexes were different from those of the physical mixture. The emulsion stabilized by OCD exhibited smaller droplet sizes and larger zeta-potentials than that stabilized by β-CD. In addition, the inclusion complexes-prepared emulsion exhibited lower POV values and TBARS contents than did the physical mixture. OCD/β-carotene inclusion complexes can improve the physical and oxidative stability of the emulsion, which is of great significance to the food industry.

Abstract
The main principles of green chemistry and engineering were extended to pharmaceutical formulations to prepare eco-friendly surfactant-free dry emulsion tablets (SFDETs) devoid of solvents or synthetic surfactants. Surfactant-free emulsions were stabilized by in situ cyclodextrins/sweet almond oil inclusion complexes and assessed for creaming stability. Formulation variables' effects on the emulsion droplet size and tadalafil solubility were studied using 22 × 3 factorial design. The emulsions exhibited nanometric and micrometric droplet sizes. The optimized nanoemulsion was loaded with tadalafil, morphologically evaluated, and utilized for preparing lyophilized SFDETs using different gelatin/Pearlitol® ratios. The tablets were characterized and the selected formulation was subjected to storage for 6 months. The emulsions prepared using β-cyclodextrin or higher concentrations of α-cyclodextrin showed little or no phase separation. Statistical analysis revealed significant influence of cyclodextrin type and amount on droplet size, while cyclodextrin type and oil volume exhibited significant effect on drug solubility. Morphological examination revealed non-aggregated spherical emulsion droplets. The prepared tablets showed satisfactory mechanical strength, short disintegration times, and enhanced drug dissolution. The selected tablet formulation (gelatin/Pearlitol®, 4:2 w/w) showed acceptable stability at 25°C/60% relative humidity. An overall conclusion claims that the absence of surfactants is expected to minimize the proposed tablets' in vivo toxicity and environmental concerns.

Abstract
The effect of emulsifiers, emulsion stabilizer (maltodextrin, MD), and β-cyclodextrin (BCD) on physical and oxidative properties of oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions (5%, 20%, 40% of oil, w/w) was investigated. Four different emulsifiers were selected based on their structure: two types of protein-based emulsifiers (sodium caseinate, SC; and whey protein isolate, WPI), and two types low molecular weight emulsifiers (LMEWs: lecithin, LEC; and Citrem, CITREM). Physical and oxidative stability of emulsions prepared with these emulsifiers together with MD were compared based on their creaming index (CI), viscosity, droplet size, zeta potential, peroxide and p-anisidine values. LMWE-stabilized emulsions (with LEC or CITREM) had better creaming stability with lower droplet sizes whereas protein-stabilized emulsions (with SC or WPI) had higher viscosities. Droplet size was the lowest when CITREM was used, which increased with increasing oil concentration for all emulsifiers. Formulation with the lowest CI value and droplet size was considered to be more prone to oxidation; therefore, a 1:1 (w/w) combination of CITREM with BCD was used to stabilize the emulsions to improve the oxidative as well as physical stability. Added BCD significantly increased the storage stability of emulsions by reducing CI and droplet size values with a simultaneous increase in the viscosity, both at room temperature and at storage conditions (at 4 and 55 o C). However, the oxidative as well as physical stability of BCD added emulsions were not improved, neither toward heat- nor light-induced lipid oxidation. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This work investigated the effects of emulsifiers and dextrins on the stability of oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. Both maltodextrin (MD) and β-cyclodextrin (BCD) addition resulted in enhanced physical stability, the latter being more effective. The findings can be applied to formulate emulsions with improved shelf life within the limits of allowed daily intake (ADI) level of BCD (5 mg/kg bw per day).

Abstract
The ability to make stable water-in-oil and oil-in-water millimeter-size Pickering emulsions is demonstrated using Janus particles-particles with distinct surface chemistries. The use of a highly cross-linked hydrophobic polymer network and the excellent water-wetting nature of a hydrogel as the hydrophobic and hydrophilic sides, respectively, permit distinct wettability on the Janus particle. Glass capillary microfluidics allows the synthesis of Janus particles with controlled sizes between 128 and 440 μm and control over the hydrophilic-to-hydrophobic domain volume ratio of the particle from 0.36 to 12.77 for a given size. It is shown that the Janus particle size controls the size of the emulsion drops, thus providing the ability to tune the structure and stability of the resulting emulsions. Stability investigations using centrifugation reveal that particles with the smallest size and a balanced hydrophilic-to-hydrophobic volume ratio (Janus ratio) form emulsions with the greatest stability against coalescence. Particles eventually jam at the interface to form nonspherical droplets. This effect is more pronounced as the hydrogel volume is increased. The large Janus particles permit facile visualization of particle-stabilized emulsions, which result in a better understanding of particle stabilization mechanisms of formed emulsions.

Abstract
The development of specific and age-appropriate pediatric formulations is essential to assure that all children and their care-givers can easily access to safe and effective dosage forms. The need for developing specific pediatric medicinal products has been highlighted by the European Medicines Agency. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of combining the advantages of both cyclodextrin (CD) complexation and loading into nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC), to obtain a liquid oral pediatric formulation of hydrochlorothiazide (HCT), endowed with safety, dosage accuracy, good stability and therapeutic efficacy. Equimolar drug combinations as physical mixture (P.M.) or coground product (GR) with hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) or sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SBEβCD) were loaded into NLC, then characterized for particle size, homogeneity, Zeta potential, entrapment efficiency, gastric and storage stability. The presence of HPβCD allowed higher entrapment efficacy than NLC loaded with the plain drug, and enabled, in the case of GR systems a complete and sustained drug release, attributable to the wetting and solubilising properties of HPβCD toward HCT. In vivo studies on rats proved the superior therapeutic effectiveness of HCT-in HPβCD-in NLC formulations compared to the corresponding free HCT-loaded NLC, thus confirming the successfulness of the proposed approach in the development of an efficacious liquid oral formulation of the drug.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) coupled with oils forms an insoluble inclusion complex that is able to adsorb to the interface between oils and aqueous phases; it thereby stabilizes Pickering emulsions. Three types of oils (triglyceride, linear chain oil, and ring-structured oil) were chosen to work with CDs to prepare bupivacaine (BPC)-encapsulated Pickering emulsions. We also investigated the relationship between oils and CDs; as well as their influences on stability, drug-releasing capability and skin permeability. Particle sizes and microstructures were determined by dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. In vitro drug release studies and in vitro skin permeation studies were evaluated by using Franz diffusion model. Particle sizes of all Pickering emulsions were larger than 1μm, and the morphology was spherical and covered with rough surfaces. BPC was released over an extended period, and the releasing ratios from Pickering emulsions were only 12.2%-23.1% after 48h. In skin permeation studies, compared with other formulations, a formula involved with ring-structured oil allowed the highest permeation amount through skin. However, after 24h of exposure, formulation operated with linear chain oil showed the highest skin-retaining amount. These results suggest that Pickering emulsions could regulate the target site of skin depending on various types of oil used.

Abstract
Pickering emulsion, a kind of emulsion stabilized only by solid particles locating at oil-water interface, has been discovered a century ago, while being extensively studied in recent decades. Substituting solid particles for traditional surfactants, Pickering emulsions are more stable against coalescence and can obtain many useful properties. Besides, they are more biocompatible when solid particles employed are relatively safe in vivo. Pickering emulsions can be applied in a wide range of fields, such as biomedicine, food, fine chemical synthesis, cosmetics, and so on, by properly tuning types and properties of solid emulsifiers. In this article, we give an overview of Pickering emulsions, focusing on some kinds of solid particles commonly serving as emulsifiers, three main types of products from Pickering emulsions, morphology of solid particles and as-prepared materials, as well as applications in different fields.

Abstract
The ability to form transient, self-assembling solid networks that 'cocoon' emulsion droplets on-demand allows new possibilities in the rapidly expanding area of microfluidic droplet-based materials science. In this communication, we demonstrate the spontaneous formation of extended colloidal networks that encase large microfluidic droplet ensembles, thus completely arresting droplet motion and effectively isolating each droplet from others in the ensemble. To do this, we employ molecular inclusion complexes of β-cyclodextrin, which spontaneously form and assemble into colloidal solids at the droplet interface and beyond, via the outward diffusion of a guest molecule (dichloromethane) from the droplets. We illustrate the advantage of such transient network-based droplet stabilization in the area of pharmaceutical crystallization, where we are able to fabricate monodisperse spherical crystalline microgranules of 5-methyl-2-[(2-nitrophenyl)amino]-3-thiophenecarbonitrile (ROY), a model hydrophobic drug, with a dramatic enhancement of particle properties compared to conventional methods.

Abstract
The stability of cyclodextrin (CD)-based emulsions is attributed to the formation of a solid film of oil-CD complexes at the oil/water interface. However, competitive interactions between CDs and other components at the interface still need to be understood. Here we develop two different routes that allow the incorporation of a model protein (sodium caseinate, SC) into emulsions based on β-CD. One route is the components adsorbed simultaneously from a mixed solution to the oil/water interface (route I), and the other is SC was added to a previously established CD-stabilized interface (route II). The adsorption mechanism of β-CD modified by SC at the oil/water interface is investigated by rheological and optical methods. Strong sensitivity of the rheological behavior to the routes is indicated by both steady-state and small-deformation oscillatory experiments. Possible β-CD/SC interaction models at the interface are proposed. In route I, the protein, due to its higher affinity for the interface, adsorbs strongly at the interface with blocking of the adsorption of β-CD and formation of oil-CD complexes. In route II, the protein penetrates and blends into the preadsorbed layer of oil-CD complexes already formed at the interface. The revelation of interfacial assembly is expected to help better understand CD-based emulsions in natural systems and improve their designs in engineering applications.
