Topological Impact of Delocalization on the Stability and Band Gap of Partially Oxidized Graphene

Strategic perturbations on the graphene framework to inflict a tunable energy band gap promises intelligent electronics that are smaller, faster, flexible, and much more efficient than silicon. Despite different chemical schemes, a clear scalable strategy for micromanaging the band gap is lagging. Since conductivity arises from the delocalized π-electrons, chemical intuition suggests that selective saturation of some sp² carbons will allow strategic control over the band gap. However, the logical cognition of different 2D π-delocalization topologies is complex. Their impact on the thermodynamic stability and band gap remains unknown. Using partially oxidized graphene with its facile and reversible epoxides, we show that delocalization overwhelmingly influences the nature of the frontier bands. Organic electronic effects like hyperconjugation, conjugation, aromaticity, etc. can be used effectively to understand the impact of delocalization. By keeping a constant C₄O stoichiometry, the relative stability of various π-delocalization topologies is directly assessed without resorting to resonance energy concepts. Our results demonstrate that >C=C< and aromatic sextets are the two fundamental blocks resulting in a large band gap in isolation. Extending the delocalization across these units will increase the stability at the expense of the band gap. The band gap is directly related to the extent of bond alternation within the π-framework, with forced single/double bonds causing the large gap. Furthermore, it also establishes the ground rules for the thermodynamic stability associated with the π-delocalization in 2D systems. We anticipate that our findings will provide the heuristic guidance for designing partially saturated graphene with the desired band gap and stability using chemical intuition.

A Mechanistic Study of Thermal Decomposition of 1,1,2,2-Tetramethyldisilane Using Vacuum Ultraviolet Photoionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry

Thermal decomposition of 1,1,2,2-tetramethyldisilane was performed by flash pyrolysis in a SiC microreactor in the temperature range from 295 to 1340 K, followed by molecular beam sampling and vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry analysis. Density functional theory investigations on the energetics of reactants, intermediates, and products were carried out to support the experimental observations. Energetics for 1,1,2,2-tetramethyldisilane initiation decomposition reactions and important secondary reactions were calculated. Dimethylsilane, dimethylsilyl radicals, dimethylsilylene, trimethylsilane, and tetramethyldisilene were determined as the primary reaction products in the initiation thermal decompositions of 1,1,2,2-tetramethyldisilane. Further decomposition reactions of tetramethyldisilene, such as production of dimethylsilene (m/z = 72) and eventually SiC₃H₄ (m/z = 68) fragments, were examined. Other products from secondary reactions of dimethylsilane and dimethylsilylene such as SiC₂H_2-6 and SiCH_0-4 were also observed. The comprehensive pyrolysis mechanism of 1,1,2,2-tetramethyldisilane was proposed.

Molecular Silicon Clusters

The continuously decreasing size of device features in microelectronics draws growing attention to the structuring of silicon at the molecular level with powerful tools provided by synthetic chemistry. Silicon clusters are of particular importance in this regard not only as potential precursors for silicon deposition but also as well-defined model systems for bulk and surfaces of silicon at the nanoscale as well as possible starting points for future construction of molecularly precise device structures. This review aims to give a comprehensive overview about the state of the art in the synthesis of molecular silicon clusters, which are grouped into (1) electron-precise saturated clusters, (2) soluble polyhedral Zintl anions, and (3) unsaturated silicon clusters, the so-called siliconoids. Particular attention is paid to functionalization as it is generally considered a necessary prerequisite for the design and construction of more extended systems. The interrelations between the three different classes of molecular silicon clusters, e.g., arising from the introduction of negatively charged functional groups, are highlighted on grounds of NMR properties and computed electronic structures.

Stable unsaturated silicon clusters (siliconoids)

Unsaturated silicon clusters are key intermediates of silicon deposition processes from the gas phase, which is reflected in the recently introduced term "siliconoids" for silicon rich clusters with at least one hemispheroidally coordinated vertex. Unlike the case of metalloid clusters of heavier Group 14 elements, stable homonuclear derivatives containing silicon have become available just recently. This review summarizes the developments since the first report on a stable unsaturated silicon cluster in 2005. The synthesis, structure and reactivity under retention of the unsaturated vertices (i.e. the functionalization) of stable siliconoids is discussed within the broader context of soluble Zintl anions of silicon and metalloid clusters. A structural parameter is introduced as a quantitative measure to characterize the "hemispheroidality" of an unsubstituted vertex of a siliconoid.

π-Electron systems containing Si=Si double bonds

Sterically large substituents can provide kinetic stabilization to various types of low-coordinate compounds. For example, regarding the chemistry of the group 14 elements, since West et al. introduced the concept of kinetic protection of the otherwise highly reactive Si=Si double bond by bulky mesityl (2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) groups in 1981, a number of unsaturated compounds of silicon and its group homologs have been successfully isolated by steric effects using the appropriate large substituents. However, the functions and applications of the Si-Si π-bonds consisting of the 3pπ electrons on the formally sp2-hybridized silicon atoms have rarely been explored until 10 years ago, when Scheschkewitz and Tamao independently reported the model systems of the oligo(p-phenylenedisilenylene)s (Si-OPVs) in 2007. This review focuses on the recent advances in the chemistry of π-electron systems containing Si=Si double bonds, mainly published in the last decade. The synthesis, characterization, and potential application of a variety of donor-free π-conjugated disilene compounds are described.

Propellanes-From a Chemical Curiosity to "Explosive" Materials and Natural Products

Propellanes are a unique class of compounds currently consisting of well over 10 000 representatives, all featuring two more or less inverted tetrahedral carbon atoms that are common to three bridging rings. The central single bond between the two bridgeheads is significantly weakened in the smaller entities, which leads to unusual reactivities of these structurally interesting propeller-like molecules. This Review highlights the synthesis of such propellanes and their occurrence in material sciences, natural products, and medicinal chemistry. The conversion of [1.1.1]propellane into bridgehead derivatives of bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane, including oligomers and polymers with bicyclo[1.1.1]penta-1,3-diyl repeat units, is also featured. A selection of natural products with larger propellane subunits are discussed in detail. Heteropropellanes and inorganic propellanes are also addressed. The historical background is touched in brief to show the pioneering work of David Ginsburg, Günther Snatzke, Kenneth B. Wiberg, Günter Szeimies, and others.
