Marangoni- vs. buoyancy-driven flows: competition for spatio-temporal oscillations in A + B → C systems

The emergence of self-organized behaviors such as spatio-temporal oscillations is well-known for complex reactions involving nonlinear chemical or thermal feedback. Recently, it was shown that local oscillations of the chemical species concentration can be induced under isothermal batch conditions for simple bimolecular A + B → C reactions, provided they are actively coupled with hydrodynamics. When two reactants A and B, initially separated in space, react upon diffusive contact, damped spatio-temporal oscillations could develop when the surface tension increases sufficiently in the reaction zone. Additionally, if the density decreases, the coupling of both surface tension- and buoyancy-driven contributions to the flow can further sustain this oscillatory instability. Here, we investigate the opposite case of a reaction inducing a localized decrease in surface tension and an increase in density in the reacting zones. In this case, the competition arising from the two antagonistic flows is needed to create oscillatory dynamics, i.e., no oscillations are observed for pure chemically driven Marangoni flows. We study numerically these scenarios in a 2-dimensional system and show how they are controlled by the following key parameters: (i) ΔM and ΔR governing the surface tension and density variation during the reaction, respectively, (ii) the layer thickness of the system, and (iii) its lateral length. This work is a further step toward inducing and controlling chemical oscillations in simple reactions.

Diffusion in liquid mixtures

The understanding of transport and mixing in fluids in the presence and in the absence of external fields and reactions represents a challenging topic of strategic relevance for space exploration. Indeed, mixing and transport of components in a fluid are especially important during long-term space missions where fuels, food and other materials, needed for the sustainability of long space travels, must be processed under microgravity conditions. So far, the processes of transport and mixing have been investigated mainly at the macroscopic and microscopic scale. Their investigation at the mesoscopic scale is becoming increasingly important for the understanding of mass transfer in confined systems, such as porous media, biological systems and microfluidic systems. Microgravity conditions will provide the opportunity to analyze the effect of external fields and reactions on optimizing mixing and transport in the absence of the convective flows induced by buoyancy on Earth. This would be of great practical applicative relevance to handle complex fluids under microgravity conditions for the processing of materials in space.

Influence of Oxygen on Chemoconvective Patterns in the Iodine Clock Reaction

There is increasing interest in using chemical clock reactions to drive material formation; however, these reactions are often subject to chemoconvective effects, and control of such systems remains challenging. Here, we show how the transfer of oxygen at the air-water interface plays a crucial role in the spatiotemporal behavior of the iodine clock reaction with sulfite. A kinetic model was developed to demonstrate how the reaction of oxygen with sulfite can control a switch from a low-iodine to high-iodine state under well-stirred conditions and drive the formation of transient iodine gradients in unstirred solutions. In experiments in thin layers with optimal depths, the reaction couples with convective instability at the air-water interface forming an extended network-like structure of iodine at the surface that develops into a spotted pattern at the base of the layer. Thus, oxygen drives the spatial separation of iodine states essential for patterns in this system and may influence pattern selection in other clock reaction systems with sulfite.

Enhancing the yield of calcium carbonate precipitation by obstacles in laminar flow in a confined geometry

Flow-driven precipitation experiments are performed in model porous media shaped within the confinement of a Hele-Shaw cell. Precipitation pattern formation and the yield of the reaction are investigated when borosilicate glass beads of different sizes are used in a mono-layer arrangement. The trend of the amount of precipitate produced in various porous media is estimated via visual observation. In addition, a new method is elaborated to complement such image analysis based results by titration experiments performed on gel-embedded precipitate patterns. The yield of confined porous systems is compared to experiments carried out in unsegmented reactors. It is found that the obstacles increase the amount of product and preserve its radial spatial distribution. The precipitate pattern is successfully conserved in a slightly cross-linked hydrogel matrix and its microstructure is examined using SEM. The spatial distribution of the precipitate across the cell gap is revealed using X-ray microtomography.

Influence of reaction-induced convection on quorum sensing in enzyme-loaded agarose beads

In theory, groups of enzyme-loaded particles producing an acid or base may show complex behavior including dynamical quorum sensing, the appearance of synchronized oscillations above a critical number or density of particles. Here, experiments were performed with the enzyme urease loaded into mm-sized agarose beads and placed in a solution of urea, resulting in an increase in pH. This behavior was found to be dependent upon the number of beads present in the array; however, reaction-induced convection occurred and plumes of high pH developed that extended to the walls of the reactor. The convection resulted in the motion of the mm-sized particles and conversion of the solution to high pH. Simulations in a simple model of the beads demonstrated the suppression of dynamical quorum sensing in the presence of flow.

Interaction of Pure Marangoni Convection with a Propagating Reactive Interface under Microgravity

A reactive interface in the form of an autocatalytic reaction front propagating in a bulk phase can generate a dynamic contact line upon reaching the free surface when a surface tension gradient builds up due to the change in chemical composition. Experiments in microgravity evidence the existence of a self-organized autonomous and localized coupling of a pure Marangoni flow along the surface with the reaction in the bulk. This dynamics results from the advancement of the contact line at the surface that acts as a moving source of the reaction, leading to the reorientation of the front propagation. Microgravity conditions allow one to isolate the transition regime during which the surface propagation is enhanced, whereas diffusion remains the main mode of transport in the bulk with negligible convective mixing, a regime typically concealed on Earth because of buoyancy-driven convection.

Surface tension- and buoyancy-driven flows across horizontally propagating chemical fronts

Chemical reactions can interplay with hydrodynamic flows to generate various complex phenomena. Because of their relevance in many research areas, chemically-induced hydrodynamic flows have attracted increasing attention in the last decades. In this context, we propose to give a review of the past and recent theoretical and experimental works which have considered the interaction of such flows with chemical fronts, i.e. reactive interfaces, formed between miscible solutions. We focus in particular on the influence of surface tension- (Marangoni) and buoyancy-driven flows on the dynamics of chemical fronts propagating horizontally in the gravity field.

Chlorine dioxide-induced and Congo red-inhibited Marangoni effect on the chlorite-trithionate reaction front

Hydrodynamic flows can exert multiple effects on an exothermal autocatalytic reaction, such as buoyancy and the Marangoni convection, which can change the structure and velocity of chemical waves. Here we report that in the chlorite-trithionate reaction, the production and consumption of chlorine dioxide can induce and inhibit Marangoni flow, respectively, leading to different chemo-hydrodynamic patterns. The horizontal propagation of a reaction-diffusion-convection front was investigated with the upper surface open to the air. The Marangoni convection, induced by gaseous chlorine dioxide on the surface, produced from chlorite disproportionation after the proton autocatalysis, has the same effect as the heat convection. When the Marangoni effect is removed by the reaction of chlorine dioxide with the Congo red (CR) indicator, an oscillatory propagation of the front tip is observed under suitable conditions. Replacing CR with bromophenol blue (BPB) distinctly enhanced the floating, resulting in multiple vortexes, owing to the coexistence between BPB and chlorine dioxide. Using the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with reaction-diffusion and heat conduction equations, we numerically obtain various experimental scenarios of front instability for the exothermic autocatalytic reaction coupled with buoyancy-driven convection and Marangoni convection.

Marangoni flow traveling with reaction fronts: Eikonal approximation

Chemical reaction fronts traveling in liquids generate gradients of surface tension leading to fluid motion. This surface tension driven flow, known as Marangoni flow, modifies the shape and the speed of the reaction front. We model the front propagation using the Eikonal relation between curvature and normal speed of the front, resulting in a front evolution equation that couples to the fluid velocity. The sharp discontinuity between the reactants and products leads to a surface tension gradient proportional to a delta function. The Stokes equations with the surface tension gradient as part of the boundary conditions provide the corresponding fluid velocity field. Considering stress free boundaries at the bottom of the liquid layer, we find an analytical solution for the fluid vorticity leading to the velocity field. Solving numerically the appropriate no-slip boundary condition, we gain insights into the role of the boundary condition at the bottom layer. We compare our results with results from two other models for front propagation: the deterministic Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation and a reaction-diffusion equation with cubic autocatalysis, finding good agreement for small differences in surface tension.
