Diffusive and non-diffusive photo-induced proton coupled electron transfer from hydrogen bonded phenols to meso-tetrakis-5,10,15,20-pentafluorophenyl porphyrin

Secondary structure effects on internal proton transfer in poly-peptides

A pump-probe approach was designed to determine the internal proton transfer (PT) rate in a series of poly-peptide radical cations containing both histidine and tryptophan. The proton transfer is driven by the gas-phase basicity difference between residues. The fragmentation scheme indicates that the gas-phase basicity of histidine is lower than that of radical tryptophan so that histidine is always pulling the proton away from tryptophan. However, the proton transfer requires the two basic sites to be in close proximity, which is rate limited by the peptide conformational dynamics. PT rate measurements were used to probe and explore the peptide conformational dynamics in several poly-glycines/prolines/alanines. For small and unstructured peptides, the PT rate decreases with the size, as expected from a statistical point of view in a flat conformational space. Conversely, if structured conformations are accessible, the structural flexibility of the peptide is decreased. This slows down the occurrence of conformations favorable to proton transfer. A dramatic decrease in the PT rates was observed for peptides HAnW, when n changes from 5 to 6. This is attributed to the onset of a stable helix for n = 6. No such discontinuity is observed for poly-glycines or poly-prolines. In HAnW, the gas-phase basicity and helix propensity compete for the position of the charge. Interestingly, in this competition between PT and helix formation in HA6W, the energy gain associated with helix formation is large enough to slow down the PT beyond experimental time but does not ultimately prevail over the proton preference for histidine.

Bacterio- and Isobacteriodilactones by Stepwise or Direct Oxidations of meso-Tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin

Porpholactones are porphyrinoids in which one or more β,β'-bonds of the parent chromophore were replaced by lactone moieties. Accessible to varying degrees by direct and nonselective oxidations of porphyrins, the rational syntheses of all five dilactone isomers along stepwise, controlled, and high-yielding routes via porphyrin → tetrahydroxyisobacteriochlorin metal complexes → isobacteriochlorindilactone metal complexes or porphyrin → tetrahydroxybacteriochlorin → bacteriochlorindilactone (and related) pathways, respectively, are described. A major benefit of these complementary routes over established methods is the simplicity of the isolation of the dilactones because of the reduced number of side products formed. In an alternative approach we report the direct and selective conversion of free base meso-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin to all isomers of free base isobacteriodilactones using the oxidant cetyltrimethylN⁺MnO₄^-. The solid-state structures of some of the isomers and their precursors are reported, providing data on the conformational modulation induced by the derivatizations. We also rationalize computationally their differing thermodynamic stability and electronic properties. In making new efficient routes toward these dilactone isomers available, we enable the further study of this diverse class of porphyrinoids.

Deciphering the incognito role of water in a light driven proton coupled electron transfer process

Light induced multisite electron proton transfer in two different phenol (simple and phenol carrying an intramolecularly hydrogen bonded base) pendants on acridinedione dye (ADD) and an NADH analogue was studied by following fluorescence quenching dynamics in an ultrafast timescale. In a simple phenol derivative (ADDOH), photo-excited acridinedione acquires an electron from phenol intramolecularly, coupled with the transfer of a proton to solvent water. But in a phenol carrying hydrogen bonded base (ADDDP), both electron and proton transfer occur completely intramolecularly. The sequence of this electron and proton transfer process was validated by discerning the pH dependency of the reaction kinetics. Since photo-excited ADDs are stronger oxidants, the sequential electron first proton transfer mechanism (ETPT) was observed in ADDOH and hence there is no change in the PCET reaction kinetics kETPT ∼ 6.57 × 109 s-1 in the entire pH range (pH 2-12). But the phenol carrying hydrogen bonded base (ADDDP) unleashes concerted electron proton transfer where the PCET reaction rate decreases upon decreasing the pH below its pKa. Noticeably, the concerted EPT process in ADDDP mimics the donor side of photosystem II and it occurs by two distinct pathways: (i) through direct intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the phenol and amine, kDEPT ∼ 12.5 × 1010 s-1 and (ii) through the bidirectional hydrogen bond extended by the water molecule trapped in between the proton donor and acceptor, which mediates the proton transfer and serves as a proton wire, kWMEPT ∼ 2.85 × 1010 s-1. These results unravel the incognito role played by water in mediating the proton transfer process when the structural elements do not favor direct hydrogen bonding between the proton donor and acceptor in a concerted PCET reaction.

Photoinduced bimolecular electron transfer from aromatic amines to pentafluorophenyl porphyrin combined with ultrafast charge recombination persistence with Marcus inverted region

The dynamics of photoinduced bimolecular reductive electron transfer between meso-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin (H₂F₂₀TPP), an acceptor (A), and five aromatic amines (donor (D)) with varying oxidation potentials (aniline (AN), N-methylaniline (MAN), N-ethylaniline (EAN), N,N-dimethylaniline (DMAN) and N,N-diethylaniline (DEAN)) in dichloromethane (DCM) as a solvent as well as in neat donor solvents were investigated by employing nanosecond to femtosecond time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy and femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy upon S₂ excitation of H₂F₂₀TPP. Systematic studies of time-resolved fluorescence quenching dependent on the donor concentration in the concentration range of 0.01-2 M and finally in neat donor solvents broadly enabled us to determine the electron transfer dynamics in three regimes of electron transfer: stationary or diffusion-controlled electron transfer, non-stationary electron transfer and intrinsic or ultrafast electron transfer. Depending upon the electron-donating ability of the studied donors, intrinsic electron transfer was found to occur in the time domain of ∼1-9 ps and diffusion-controlled ET dynamics was observed in the time domain of 200-500 ps, whereas the maximum limit of non-stationary electron transfer could be observed in the time domain of 15-50 ps. Femtosecond transient absorption studies together with global and target analysis helped to identify the spectral signature of the (H₂F₂₀TPP˙^-) radical anion as the product of ET. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first ever evidence that shows the spectra of an anion as the product of ET for any porphyrin-based electron transfer dynamics. However, transient absorption measurements confirm that intrinsic ET occurs in the Q_y state, whereas diffusion-controlled ET occurs in the hot Q_x as well as in the thermal equilibrium Q_x state. The most remarkable fact derived from the measurements of transient absorption was that the rate of the forward electron transfer (CS) is exactly the same as the rate of the backward electron transfer (CR) for all three regimes of ET. The thermodynamic driving force for CR was found to lie in the range of the total reorganization energy for the studied systems and hence falls in the Marcus optimal region, and the CR process is barrierless. The dependence on the driving force of the combination of forward and reverse electron transfer exhibited a bell-shaped curve for all three regimes of electron transfer, even though the rate of intrinsic ET is higher by a factor of ∼10² than that of diffusion-controlled ET. These results unambiguously favour the Marcus theory, in particular the controversial Marcus inverted region, of outer-sphere electron transfer.
