Experimental and in silico insights: interaction of dimethyl sulphoxide with 1-hexyl-2-methyl imidazolium bromide/1-octyl-2-methyl imidazolium bromide at different temperatures

Ionic liquids have gained attention as 'designer solvents' since they offer a broad spectrum of properties that can be tuned by altering the constituent ions. In this work, 1-alkyl-2-methyl imidazolium-based ionic liquids with two different alkyl chains (alkyl = hexyl and octyl) have been synthesized and characterized. Since the binary mixture of ionic liquids with molecular solvents can give rise to striking physicochemical properties, the interaction of the synthesized room temperature ionic liquids, 1-hexyl-2-methyl imidazolium bromide [HMIM][Br]/1-octyl-2-methyl imidazolium bromide [OMIM][Br] with DMSO has been examined through density and specific conductance at T = (303.15, 308.15, 313.15 and 318.15) K under atmospheric pressure. The obtained molar volume and excess molar volume are fitted to the Redlich-Kister polynomial equation, and the standard deviation is noted. The positive excess molar volume at elevated temperatures indicates volume expansion due to the mutual loss of dipolar association and differences in the sizes and shapes of the constituent molecules. To have a better understanding of the reactivity and efficacy of 1-hexyl-2-methyl imidazolium bromide and 1-octyl-2-methyl imidazolium bromide with DMSO, the Becke, 3-parameter, Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) correlation function of density functional theory (DFT) has been used. The ORCA Program version 4.0 calculates the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy. The effective reactivities of both the compounds that showed an energy band gap (ΔE), i.e., the difference between ELUMO and EHOMO, are 7.147 and 8.037 kcal mol-1.

Ion Dissociation in Ionic Liquids and Ionic Liquid Solutions

The extent to which cations and anions in ionic liquids (ILs) and ionic liquid solutions are dissociated is of both fundamental scientific interest and practical importance because ion dissociation has been shown to impact viscosity, density, surface tension, volatility, solubility, chemical reactivity, and many other important chemical and physical properties. When mixed with solvents, ionic liquids provide the unique opportunity to investigate ion dissociation from infinite dilution in the solvent to a completely solvent-free state, even at ambient conditions. The most common way to estimate ion dissociation in ILs and IL solutions is by comparing the molar conductivity determined from ionic conductivity measurements such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) (which measure the movement of only the charged, i.e., dissociated, ions) with the molar conductivity calculated from ion diffusivities measured by pulse field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (PFG-NMR, which gives movement of all of the ions). Because the NMR measurements are time-consuming, the number of ILs and IL solutions investigated by this method is relatively limited. We have shown that use of the Stokes-Einstein equation with estimates of the effective ion Stokes radii allows ion dissociation to be calculated from easily measured density, viscosity, and ionic conductivity data (ρ, η, λ), which is readily available in the literature for a much larger number of pure ILs and IL solutions. Therefore, in this review, we present values of ion dissociation for ILs and IL solutions (aqueous and nonaqueous) determined by both the traditional molar conductivity/PFG-NMR method and the ρ, η, λ method. We explore the effect of cation and anion alkyl chain length, structure, and interaction motifs of the cation and anion, temperature, and the strength of the solvent in IL solutions.

Molecular origin of enhanced proton conductivity in anhydrous ionic systems

Ionic systems with enhanced proton conductivity are widely viewed as promising electrolytes in fuel cells and batteries. Nevertheless, a major challenge toward their commercial applications is determination of the factors controlling the fast proton hopping in anhydrous conditions. To address this issue, we have studied novel proton-conducting materials formed via a chemical reaction of lidocaine base with a series of acids characterized by a various number of proton-active sites. From ambient and high pressure experimental data, we have found that there are fundamental differences in the conducting properties of the examined salts. On the other hand, DFT calculations revealed that the internal proton hopping within the cation structure strongly affects the pathways of mobility of the charge carrier. These findings offer a fresh look on the Grotthuss-type mechanism in protic ionic glasses as well as provide new ideas for the design of anhydrous materials with exceptionally high proton conductivity.
