Abstract
There have been some studies on the microscopic properties of ester-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs), but the microscopic properties of their mixtures with co-solvents have seldom been reported. In practical applications, ILs are usually used together with co-solvents. Therefore, it is very important to study the microstructure of ester-functionalized ILs and co-solvents. In this work, the hydrogen bonding interactions between ester-functionalized IL 1-acetoxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (AOEMIMBF4) and DMSO were studied using spectroscopic methods and quantum chemical calculations. Non-functionalized IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF4) and DMSO were used for comparison. The results indicate that (1) by adding DMSO, the hydrogen bonding interactions of ν(C2-H) were enhanced, and DMSO could form hydrogen bonds with anions and cations simultaneously. (2) The incorporation of an ester group could enhance the hydrogen bonding interactions. (3) Both the stretching vibration of C2-H and CO indicated changes in the microscopic structure: AOEMIMBF4 ion clusters first interacted with DMSO, then broke into AOEMIMBF4-DMSO complexes and finally existed as [AOEMIM]+/[BF4]--DMSO complexes.

Abstract
The development of metal-free, high effective and recyclable catalysts plays a pivotal role in transforming CO2 into high value-added products such as cyclic carbonates. In this paper, we introduced the hydrogen bond donor (HBD) groups into poly(ionic liquid)s via free radical polymerization, which successfully combined the HBD and ionic liquids (ILs) into one heterogeneous catalyst. The HBD could synergistically activate epoxides with hydroxyl functionalized ionic liquids and efficiently catalyze the cycloaddition of CO2 into cyclic carbonates. The yield of propylene carbonate (PC) reached 94% (at 105 °C, 2 MPa CO2, 3 h), which far exceeded poly(ionic liquid)s without HBDs functionalization (PC yield 72%), and even approached bulk ionic liquids (PC yield 95%). Moreover, HBD-functionalized poly(ionic liquid)s (HPILs) exhibited excellent recyclability after five runs and afforded wide substrate scope. According to the experimental results, 1H NMR spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and the hydroxyl of ILs would form strong H-bonds with epoxides contributing to the ring-opening process of epoxides, and a possible HBD and nucleophilic anion synergistically catalytic mechanism was proposed. The method herein paved a brand new way for green technology and utilization of poly(ionic liquid)s.

Abstract
Bioactive compound 3-aryl-2-oxazolidinone could be synthesized by a green method mixing carbon dioxide, aniline, and ethylene oxide. Our group previously proposed a parallel mechanism for this conversion catalyzed by ionic liquids. Recently, a new study on a similar reaction system of styrene oxide, carbon dioxide, and aniline under the catalysis of K3PO4 gave a different serial mechanism. In order to explore the mechanism of reaction, we conducted a combined theoretical and experimental study on a one-pot conversion of styrene oxide, carbon dioxide, and aniline. In experiments, two isomer products, 3,5-diphenyl-l,3-oxazolidin-2-one and 3,4-diphenyl-l,3-oxazolidin-2-one, were observed. The computational results show that the parallel mechanism is more favored in thermodynamics and in kinetics due to the instability of isocyanate and hardness of its generation. Hence, we believe the previous parallel mechanism is more reasonable under our catalysts and conditions.

Abstract
A series of aqueous solutions of 1-(n-hydroxyalkyl)-3-(n-hydroxyalkyl) imidazolium bromide ([HOCnCmOHIm][Br], with n and m = 2, 6,10 and 14) were studied by atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. Structural properties were characterized by the radial distribution functions between different pairs, angular distributions and aggregation numbers. Dynamics of the system has been investigated by computing the diffusion of the ions and molecules. Structures of the aggregates formed depend upon the length of the hydroxyalkyl chains. The long-distance spatial correlations observed in solutions with cations having long chain substituent are arising due to the formation of intercalated structures. A thin film like structure is formed in solutions having longer hydroxyalkyl chains, with the structure stabilized by the dispersion interactions between the interdigitated alkyl chains and the hydrogen bond formation between the hydroxyl group of a cation with head group of a different cation. Anions are dispersed near the surface of the film.

Abstract
The development of solvent-free, metal-free, recyclable organic catalysts is required for the current chemical fixation of carbon dioxide converted into cyclic carbonates. With the goal of reducing the cost, time, and energy consumption for the coupling reaction of CO2 and epoxides, a series of highly active heterogeneous catalysts, based on a thiourea and quaternary ammonium salt system, are synthesized by using a thiol-ene click reaction under ultraviolet light. Benefitting from synergistic interactions of the electrophilic center (thiourea) and the nucleophilic site (ammonium bromide), the catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic selectivity (99 %) for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with a diverse range of epoxides under mild conditions (1.2 MPa, 100 °C). Moreover, the catalyst can be easily recycled by facile filtration and reused for 5 times without noticeable loss of activity and selectivity. This work provides a potential heterogeneous catalyst for the conversion of carbon dioxide into high value-added chemicals with the combined advantages of low cost, easy recovery, and satisfactory catalytic properties.

Abstract
The role of water as highly effective hydrogen-bond donor (HBD) for promoting the coupling reaction of CO2 with a variety of epoxides was demonstrated under very mild conditions (25-60 °C, 2-10 bar CO2 ). Water led to a dramatic increase in the cyclic carbonate yield when employed in combination with tetrabutylammonium iodide (Bu4 NI) whereas it had a detrimental effect with the corresponding bromide and chloride salts. The efficiency of water in promoting the activity of the organic halide was compared with three state-of-the-art hydrogen bond donors, that is, phenol, gallic acid and ascorbic acid. Although water required higher molar loadings compared to these organic hydrogen-bond donors to achieve a similar degree of conversion of CO2 and styrene oxide into the corresponding cyclic carbonate under the same, mild reaction conditions, its environmental friendliness and much lower cost make it a very attractive alternative as hydrogen-bond donor. The effect of different parameters such as the amount of water, CO2 pressure, reaction temperature, and nature of the organic halide used as catalyst was investigated by using a high-throughput reactor unit. The highest catalytic activity was achieved with either Bu4 NI or bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium iodide (PPNI): with both systems, the cyclic carbonate yield at 45 °C with different epoxide substrates could be increased by a factor of two or more by adding water as a promoter, retaining high selectivity. Water was an effective hydrogen-bond donor even at room temperature, allowing to reach 85 % conversion of propylene oxide with full selectivity towards propylene carbonate in combination with Bu4 NI (3 mol %). For the conversion of epoxides in which PPNI is poorly soluble, the addition of a cyclic carbonate as solvent allowed the formation of a homogeneous solution, leading to enhanced product yield.

Abstract
Abstract
In China, the rapid development greatly promotes the national economic power and living standard but also inevitably brings a series of environmental problems. In order to resolve these problems fundamentally, Chinese scientists have been undertaking research in the area of green chemical engineering (GCE) for many years and achieved great progresses. In this paper, we reviewed the research progresses related to GCE in China and screened four typical topics related to the Chinese resources characteristics and environmental requirements, i.e. ionic liquids and their applications, biomass utilization and bio-based materials/products, green solvent-mediated extraction technologies, and cold plasmas for coal conversion. Afterwards, the perspectives and development tendencies of GCE were proposed, and the challenges which will be faced while developing available industrial technologies in China were mentioned.

Abstract
An electrostatically enhanced phenol as a simple and competent bifunctional organocatalyst for the atom-economical conversion of epoxides to cyclic carbonates under environmentally benign conditions is described. Incorporating a positively charged center into phenols through a modular one-step synthesis results in a bifunctional system with enhanced acidity and reactivity, capable of epoxide activation, a halide nucleophilic ring-opening process, and CO2 incorporation in a synergistic fashion. A rational survey of the efficiency of different positively charged phenols and the influence of different parameters, such as temperature, catalyst loading, and the nature of the nucleophile, on catalytic activity was conducted. In addition, the time-dependent conversion of epoxide into the corresponding cyclic carbonate was further explored by FTIR-ATR and 1 H NMR spectroscopy. This bifunctional catalytic platform is among one of the mildest and most efficient metal-free systems that is capable of converting a variety of epoxides into cyclic carbonates under virtually ambient conditions. The 1 H NMR titration experiment validated the bifunctional catalytic mechanism wherein both the epoxide activation and the nucleophilic ring-opening process occur in concert en route to carbon dioxide fixation.

Abstract
Cyclic carbonates as industrial commodities offer a viable nonredox carbon dioxide fixation, and suitable heterogeneous catalysts are vital for their widespread implementation. Here, we report a highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst for CO2 addition to epoxides based on a newly identified active catalytic pocket consisting of pyridine, imine, and phenol moieties. The polymeric, metal-free catalyst derived from this active site converts less-reactive styrene oxide under atmospheric pressure in quantitative yield and selectivity to the corresponding carbonate. The catalyst does not need additives, solvents, metals, or co-catalysts, can be reused at least 10 cycles without the loss of activity, and scaled up easily to a kilogram scale. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the nucleophilicity of pyridine base gets stronger due to the conjugated imines and H-bonding from phenol accelerates the reaction forward by stabilizing the intermediate.

Abstract
Various amino-functional ionic liquids were developed as homogeneous catalysts for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide to different epoxides yielding the corresponding cyclic carbonates under metal- and solvent-free conditions. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, CO2 pressure, and the amount of catalyst on the cycloaddition reaction were investigated. The catalysts could be easily recovered after the reaction and then reused at least eight times without noticeable loss of activity and selectivity. Reaction kinetic studies were undertaken, the reaction was apparently first order with respect to the concentration of epoxide and catalyst. Furthermore, the rate constants were determined over a temperature range of 100–130°C and the activation energy was determined to be 45.9 kJ mol−1. Finally, a possible reaction mechanism was proposed. The amino-functional ionic liquids showed the advantage of high catalytic activity and were easily recyclable for CO2 chemical fixation into valuable chemicals.

Abstract
A novel triphenylphosphine-based porous polymer (TPDB) with a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area was synthesized through Friedel-Crafts alkylation of triphenylphosphine and α-dibromo-p-xylene. Then, the functional hydroxyl groups were successfully grafted onto the polymer framework by post modification of TPDB with 3-bromo-1-propanol (BP) and triethanolamine (TEA). The resulting sample TPDB-BP-TEA was characterized by various techniques such as FT-IR, TG, SEM, EDS mapping, ICP-MS, and N2 adsorption-desorption. This new polymer was tested as the catalyst in the solvent-free cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with epoxides, which exhibited excellent performance, with high yield, selectivity, and stable recyclability for several catalytic cycles. The comparison experiment results demonstrate that the bromide ions and hydroxyl groups, as well as high surface area, are key factors in improving the catalytic activity of this new catalyst.
