A Theoretical Study on the Influence of Five- and Six-Membered N-Heterocyclic Ring Side Chains of the N-Donor Extractants on Am(III)/Eu(III) Extraction and Separation

According to the green development requirements of carbon neutrality and carbon peaking, the effective separation of lanthanides and actinides is one of the key factors for nuclear energy to become a sustainable energy source. In recent years, o-phenanthroline-based ligands have been proven to be effective in the separation of lanthanides and actinides. In this work, based on 5,9b-dihydro-4aH-cyclopenta[1,2-b:5,4-b']dipyridines, we designed six N-heterocyclic ring ligands and theoretically studied their extraction capacity and separation selectivity for the Am(III) and Eu(III) ions. Various theoretical methods were used to analyze the properties of the ligands and study the bonding nature of the ligands with the metal ions. Thermodynamic parameters were calculated to measure the extraction ability of the ligands to the metal ions and to explore the separation capacity of the ligand for the Am(III) and Eu(III) ions. The calculated results show that the five- and six-membered N-heterocyclic ring side chains of the ligands and the distribution of the N atoms on the side chain rings have obvious effects on the bonding of the ligands to metal ions and on the extraction and separation properties of the ligands for the metal ions. It was found that the extractants with six-membered ring side chains possess an extraction ability slightly better than that of the ligands with five-membered ring side chains and that the ligands with a pair of adjacent N atoms on the side chains have a stronger separation selectivity for the Am(III)/Eu(III) ions. The theoretical research in this work will help to understand the details of binding and extraction properties of similar ligands and provide insights for the future design of five- and six-membered heterocyclic ligands.

Understanding the Interaction of Uranyl Cation with Two C-Pivot Tripodal Amides: Synthesis, Complexation, Microcalorimetry, and DFT Studies

Complexation of uranyl ions with two structurally related C-pivotal tripodal amides with varying spacer lengths, synthesized for the first time, was studied by optical spectroscopy. In the tripodal amides, the coordination was through the carbonyl O atoms where the carbonyl groups were away from the central C-atom by three spacer atoms (LI) and four spacer atoms (LII), respectively. Increasing the spacer atoms going from LI to LII favors the complexation with the linear uranyl cations and results in stronger complex formation. The complexation heat between the uranyl cations and the two amide ligands was directly measured by microcalorimetric titrations. The complexation with both the ligands was driven by exothermic enthalpy and positive entropy changes. Formation of the complex proceeded by the replacement of water molecules from the primary coordination sphere of the uranyl cation. Both ligands formed bisolvated (ML2-type) complexes in which one unit of the ligand binds in a monodentate manner and the other in a bidentate mode. Density functional theory calculations further supported our experimental observations.

Theoretical Study on the Coordination and Separation Capacity of Macrocyclic N-Donor Extractants for Am(III)/Eu(III)

Designing ligands that can effectively separate actinide An(III)/lanthanide Ln(III) in the solvent extraction process remains one of the key issues in the treatment of accumulated spent nuclear fuel. Nitrogen donor ligands are considered as promising extractants for the separation of An(III) and Ln(III) due to their environmental friendliness. Four new macrocyclic N-donor hexadentate extractants were designed and their coordination with Am(III) and Eu(III), as well as their extraction selectivity and separation performance for Am(III) and Eu(III), were investigated by scalar relativistic density functional theory. A variety of theoretical methods have been used to evaluate the properties of the four ligands and the coordination structures, bonding properties, and thermodynamic properties of the complexes formed by the four ligands with Am(III) and Eu(III). The results of various wavefunction analysis methods including NBO analysis, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis, and so on show that Am(III) has a stronger coordination ability with the ligands than Eu(III) due to the Am 5f orbitals more involved in bonding with the ligands than the Eu 4f orbitals, and the bonding environment of the N-donor in the ligand has a significant effect on its coordination ability of the metal ions. Thermodynamic analysis of the solvent extraction process shows that all of the four N-containing macrocyclic ligands have good extraction selectivity and separation performance for Am(III) and Eu(III). This study provides theoretical support for designing potential nitrogen-containing macrocyclic extractants with excellent separation performance.

Theoretical Insights on the Complexation of Americium(III) and Europium(III) with Diglycolamide- and Dimethylacetamide-Functionalized Calix[4]arenes

Separation of minor actinides from lanthanides is one of the biggest challenges in spent fuel reprocessing due to the similar physicochemical properties of trivalent lanthanides (Ln(III)) and actinides (An(III)). Therefore, developing ligands with excellent extraction and separation performance is essential at present. As an excellent pre-organization platform, calixarene has received more attention on Ln(III)/An(III) separation. In this work, we systematically explored the complexation behaviors of the diglycolamide (DGA)/dimethylacetamide (DMA)-functionalized calix[4]arene extractants for Eu(III) and Am(III) using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). These calix[4]arene-derived ligands were obtained by functionalization with two or four binding units at the narrow edge of the calix[4]arene platform. All bonding nature analyses suggested that the Eu-L complexes possess stronger interaction compared to Am-L analogues, resulting in the higher extraction capacity of the these calix[4]arene ligands toward Eu(III). Thermodynamic analysis demonstrates that these pre-organized ligands on the calix[4]arene platform with four binding units yield better extraction abilities than the single ligands. Although DMA-functionalized ligands show stronger complexation stability for metal ions, in acidic solutions, the calix[4]arene ligands with DGA binding units have better extraction performance for Eu(III) and Am(III) due to the basicity of the DMA ligand. This work enabled us to gain a deeper understanding of the bonding properties between supramolecular ligands and lanthanides/actinides and afford useful insights into designing efficient supramolecular ligands for separating Ln(III)/An(III).

Theoretical Insights into the Selectivity of Hydrophilic Sulfonated and Phosphorylated Ligands to Am(III) and Eu(III) Ions

The separation of lanthanides and actinides has attracted great attention in spent nuclear fuel reprocessing up to date. In addition, liquid-liquid extraction is a feasible and useful way to separate An(III) from Ln(III) based on their relative solubilities in two different immiscible liquids. The hydrophilic bipyridine- and phenanthroline-based nitrogen-chelating ligands show excellent performance in separation of Am(III) and Eu(III) as reported previously. To profoundly explore the separation mechanism, herein, we first of all designed four hydrophilic sulfonated and phosphorylated ligands L¹, L², L³, and L⁴ based on the bipyridine and phenanthroline backbones. In addition, we studied the structures of these ligands and their neutral complexes [ML(NO₃)₃] (M = Am, Eu) as well as the thermodynamic properties of complexing reactions through the scalar relativistic density functional theory. According to the changes of the Gibbs free energy for the back-extraction reactions, the phenanthroline-based ligands L² and L⁴ have stronger complexing capacity for both Am(III) and Eu(III) ions while the phosphorylated ligand L³ with the bipyridine framework has the highest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity. In addition, the charge decomposition analysis revealed a higher degree of charge transfer from the ligand to Am(III), suggesting stronger donor-acceptor interactions in the Am(III) complexes. This study can provide theoretical insights into the separation of actinide(III)/lanthanide(III) using hydrophilic sulfonated and phosphorylated N-donor ligands.

Experimental and theoretical studies on the extraction behavior of Cf(iii) by NTAamide(C8) ligand and the separation of Cf(iii)/Cm(iii)

In this work we studied the extraction behaviors of Cf(iii) by NTAamide (N,N,N',N',N'',N''-hexaocactyl-nitrilotriacetamide, C8) in nitric acid medium. Influencing factors such as contact time, concentration of NTAamide(C8), HNO3 and NO3 - as well as temperature were considered. The slope analysis showed that Cf(iii) should be coordinated in the form of neutral molecules, and the extraction complex should be Cf(NO3)3·2L (L = NTAamide(C8)), which can achieve better extraction effect under the low acidity condition. When the concentration of HNO3 was 0.1 mol L-1, the separation factor (SFCf/Cm) was 3.34. The extractant has application prospect to differentiate the trivalent Cf(iii) and Cm(iii) when the concentration of nitric acid is low. On the other hand, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to explore the coordination mechanism of NTAamide(C8) ligands with Cf/Cm cations. The NTAamide(C8) complexes of Cf(iii)/Cm(iii) have similar geometric structures, and An(iii) is more likely to form a complex with 1 : 2 stoichiometry (metal ion/ligands). In addition, bonding property and thermodynamics analyses showed that NTAamide(C8) ligands had stronger coordination ability with Cf(iii) over Cm(iii). Our work provides meaningful information with regard to the in-group separation of An(iii) in practical systems.

Aggregation Behavior of Nitrilotriacetamide (NTAmide) Ligands in Thorium(IV) Extraction from Acidic Medium: Small-Angle Neutron Scattering, Fourier Transform Infrared, and Theoretical Studies

Two tripodal amides obtained from nitrilotriacetic acid with n-butyl and n-octyl alkyl chains (HBNTA(L_I) and HONTA(L_II), respectively) were studied for the extraction of Th(IV) ions from nitric acid medium. The effect of the diluent medium, i.e., n-dodecane alone and a mixture of n-dodecane and 1-decanol, onto aggregate formation were investigated using small angle neutron scattering (SANS) studies. In addition, the influence of the ligand structure, nitric acid, and Th(IV) loading onto ligand aggregation and third-phase formation tendency was discussed.The L_I/L_II exist as monomers (aggregarte radius for L_I: 6.0 Å; L_II:7.4 Å) in the presence of 1-decanol, whereas L_II forms dimers (aggregarte radius for L_II:9.3 Å; L_I does not dissolve in n-dodecane) in the absence of 1-decanol. The aggregation number increases for both the ligands after HNO₃ and Th(IV) loading. The maximum organic concentration (0.050 ± 0.004 M) of Th(IV) was reached without third-phase formation for 0.1 M L_I/L_II dissolved in 20% isodecanol +80% n-dodecane. The interaction of 1-decanol with L_II and HNO₃/Th(IV) with amidic oxygens of L_I/L_II results in shift of carbonyl stretching frequency, as shown by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) studies. The structural and bonding information of the Th-L_I/L_II complex were derived from the density functional theoretical (DFT) studies. The molecular dynamics (MD) simulations suggested that the aggregation behavior of the ligand in the present system is governed by the population of hydrogen bonds by phase modifier around the ligand molecules. Although the theoretical studies suggested higher Gibbs free energy of complexation for Th⁴⁺ ions with L_I than L_II, the extraction was found to be higher with the latter, possibly due to the higher lipophilicity and solubility of the Th-L_II aggregate in the nonpolar media.

Theoretical Insights into Phenanthroline-Based Ligands toward the Separation of Am(III)/Eu(III)

The bistriazinyl-phenanthroline representative ligand, BTPhen, shows excellent extraction and separation ability for trivalent actinides and lanthanides. Herein, we first designed three phenanthroline-based nitrogen-donor ligands (L¹, L², and L³), and then studied the structural and bonding properties as well as thermodynamic properties of the probable complexes, ML(NO₃)₃ (M = Am or Eu and L = L¹, L², or L³), using scalar relativistic density functional theory. Our charge decomposition analysis revealed an obviously higher charge transfer from the ligand to Am(III) compared with the Eu(III) case for the studied complexes. Spin density analysis further showed a more significant degree of Am-to-ligand spin delocalization and the corresponding spin polarization on the ligands. According to the thermodynamic analysis, ligand L³ has the strongest complexation capacity for both Am(III) and Eu(III) ions, while ligand L¹ has the highest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity in binary octanol/water solutions. We expected that this work can provide valuable theoretical support for the design of effective ligands for actinide(III)/lanthanide(III) separation in high level liquid waste.

Complexation and enantioselectivity of novel bridge-like uranyl- 2-((1Z,9Z)-9-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)-3,5,6,8-tetrahydrobenzo[h][1,4,7,10] dioxadiazacyclododecin-2-yl)-5-methoxyphenol with chiral organophosphorus pesticide enantiomers of R/S-malathions

Designing new uranyl complexes with enantioselectivity is of great significance for the identification and separation of enantiomers of chiral pesticides. In this paper, a new asymmetric rigid uranyl-2-((1Z,9Z)-9-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)-3,5,6,8-tetrahydrobenzo[h][1,4,7,10] dioxadiaza-cyclododecin-2-yl)-5-methoxyphenol(Uranyl-HTDM) was designed, we used Uranyl-HTDM as a receptor to selectively coordinate with the guests of the chiral organophosphorus pesticide R/S-malathions(R/S-MLTs) to explore the receptor's enatioselectivity recognition of the chiral guests of R/S-MLTs. Density functional theory (DFT) method was used to comprehensively study the complexation mode of the receptor with enantiomers. The results showed that the U of Uranyl-HTDM could coordinate with both the thiophosphoryl sulfur and carbonyl oxygens of R/S-MLTs in different environments, respectively. The thermodynamics calculations further indicated that the receptor could selectively recognize the thiophosphoryl sulfur and carbonyl oxygen atoms of R/S-malathions, and the complexation abilities of Uranyl-HTDM to the R/S-malathions under different solvents were not the same. The smaller the polarity of solvents, the stronger the complexation ability of Uranyl-HTDM with R-malathion, toluene was an ideal solvent with large △G change and enatioselectivity coefficient of 99.55%. The study provides useful references for the design of new uranyl-salophens and for the experimental study on the molecular recognition of chiral organophosphorus pesticides.

Theoretical Probing of Size-Selective Crown Ether Macrocycle Ligands for Transplutonium Element Separation

Effective separation and recovery of chemically similar transplutonium elements from adjacent actinides is extremely challenging in spent fuel reprocessing. Deep comprehension of the complexation of transplutonium elements and ligands is significant for the design and development of ligands for the in-group separation of transplutonium elements. Because of experimental difficulties of transplutonium elements, theoretical calculation has become an effective means of exploring transplutonium complexes. In this work, we systematically investigated the coordination mechanism between transplutonium elements (An = Am, Cm, Bk, Cf) and two crown ether macrocyclic ligands [N,N'- bis[(6-carboxy-2-pyridyl)methyl]-1,10-diaza-18-crown-6 (H₂bp18c6) and N,N'-bis[(6-methylphosphinic-2-pyridyl)methyl]-1,10-diaza-18-crown-6 (H₂bpp18c6)] through quasi-relativistic density functional theory. The extraction complexes of [Anbp18c6]⁺ and [Anbpp18c6]⁺ possess similar geometrical structures with actinide atoms located in the cavity of the ligands. Bonding nature analysis indicates that the coordination ability of the coordinating atoms in pendent arms is stronger than that in the crown ether macrocycle because of the limitation of the macrocycle. Most of the coordination atoms of the H₂bp18c6 ligand have a stronger ability to coordinate with metal ions than those of the H₂bpp18c6 ligand. In addition, the bonding strength between the metal ions and ligands gradually weakens from Am to Cf, which is mainly attributed to the size selectivity of the ligands. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the H₂bp18c6 ligand has a stronger extraction capacity than the H₂bpp18c6 ligand, while the H₂bpp18c6 ligand is superior in terms of the in-group separation ability. The extraction capacity of the two ligands for metal ions gradually decreases across the actinide series, indicating that these crown ether macrocycle ligands have size selectivity for these actinide cations as a result of steric constraint of the crown ether ring. We hope that these results offer theoretical clues for the development of macrocycle ligands for in-group transplutonium separation.

Theoretical Insights into the Separation of Am(III)/Eu(III) by Hydrophilic Sulfonated Ligands

In this work, we focused on the separation of Am(III)/Eu(III) with four hydrophilic sulfonated ligands (L) based on the framework of phenanthroline and bipyridine through scalar relativistic density functional theory. We studied the electronic structures of [ML(NO₃)₃] (M = Am, Eu) complexes and the bonding nature between metal and ligands as well as evaluated the separation selectivity of Am(III)/Eu(III). The tetrasulfonated ligand L² with a bipyridine framework has the strongest complexing ability for metal ions probably because of the better solubility and flexible skeleton. The disulfonated ligand L¹ has the highest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity, which is attributed to the covalent difference between the Am-N and Eu-N bonds based on the quantum theory of atoms in the molecule analysis. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the four hydrophilic sulfonated ligands are more selective toward Am(III) over Eu(III). In addition, these hydrophilic sulfonated ligands show better complexing ability and Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity compared to the corresponding hydrophobic nonsulfonated ones. This work provides theoretical support for the separation of Am(III)/Eu(III) using hydrophilic sulfonated ligands.

Complexation and Separation of Trivalent Actinides and Lanthanides by a Novel DGA Derived from Macrocyclic Crown Ether: Synthesis, Extraction, and Spectroscopic and Density Functional Theory Studies

A DGA-arm-grafted macrocyclic aza-crown ether ligand (Cr6DGA) was synthesized, and its solvent extraction behavior toward trivalent americium and europium in nitric acid medium was studied. The effects of various parameters such as the contact time, temperature, concentration of the extractant, and acidity on the extraction by Cr6DGA were investigated. It was found that in 3 mol/L HNO₃, the SF_Eu/Am value was about 2. The complexation energies calculated by DFT showed that the Eu(III) complexes were more stable than the corresponding Am(III) complexes in gas, aqueous, and organic phases. Furthermore, the coordination study showed that the metal/ligand ratio of the extracted species was 1:2 by mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. The time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectra (TRLFS) further proved that the extracted species contained one water molecule, and so the composition of the extracted complexes may be [EuL₂NO₃(H₂O)]²⁺ or [EuL₂(NO₃)₂(H₂O)]⁺. Finally, DFT calculations revealed that [EuL₂(NO₃)₂(H₂O)]⁺ is a more stable species and the binding energy of Eu(III) with the DGA unit is lower than that with the crown unit.

Quantum chemical studies of selective back-extraction of Am(III) from Eu(III) and Cm(III) with two hydrophilic 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-bis-triazolyl ligands

We theoretically investigated the selective back-extraction towards Am(III) over Eu(III) and Cm(III) with two water-soluble 2,9-bis-triazolyl-1,10-phenanthroline derivatives BTrzPhen1 (with two ethanol side chains) and BTrz-Phen2 (with two 1,2-butanediol side chains) by density functional theory (DFT). The molecular geometries and formation reactions of the metal-ligand complexes were modeled by using M(BTrzPhen)(NO3)3 and [M(BTrzPhen)2(NO3)]2+. Am(III) selectivity over Eu(III) and Cm(III) with BTrzPhen2 was successfully reproduced by back-extraction reaction free energy analysis. Moreover, bonding properties between the metal cations and coordinated ligands (model complexes) were studied in terms of Mayer bond order and quantum theory of atoms in molecule (QTAIM). The difference in covalency between An–N and Eu–N bonds were found to be the key factors for Am(III)/Eu(III) separation, while the Am(III) selectivity over Cm(III) of BTrzPhen2 might be attributed to the competition of donor atoms for cation binding preference toward Am(III) and Cm(III).

Separation of actinides from lanthanides associated with spent nuclear fuel reprocessing in China: current status and future perspectives

Developing necessary reprocessing techniques to meet the remarkable increase of spent nuclear fuels (SNFs) is crucial for the sustainable development of nuclear energy. This review summarizes recent research progresses related to the SNF reprocessing in China, with an emphasis on actinides separation over lanthanides through three different techniques, hydrometallurgical reprocessing, pyrometallurgical processes, and selective crystallization based separation. Some future perspectives with respect to advanced actinide separation are also given.

Highly Efficient N-Pivot Tripodal Diglycolamide Ligands for Trivalent f-Cations: Synthesis, Extraction, Spectroscopy, and Density Functional Theory Studies

A series of four N-pivot tripodal diglycolamide (DGA) ligands, where three DGA moieties are attached to the central N atom via spacers of different lengths and with varying alkyl substituents on the amidic nitrogen of DGA (L_I-L_IV), were studied for their extraction and complexation ability toward trivalent lanthanide/actinide ions, including solvent extraction, complexation using spectrophotometric titrations, and luminescence spectroscopic studies. Introduction of a methyl group on the amidic nitrogen atom gives rise to a 400 fold increase of the Eu distribution ( D) value [L_III (NMe) vs L_II (NH)] at 1 M HNO₃. Enlargement of the spacer length between the pivotal N atom and the DGA moieties with one carbon atom results in a 14 times higher D_Eu value [L_I (C3) vs L_II (C2)]. Slope analyses showed that Eu³⁺ was extracted as a bis-solvated species with all four ligands. The compositions of the Eu³⁺/L complexes were further confirmed by spectroscopic measurements, its formation constants following the order: L_III > L_IV > L_I > L_II. Luminescence spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry revealed that all four ligands form [Eu(L)₂(NO₃)₃] complexes. Density functional theory and thermodynamic parameters corroborated the existence of [Eu(L)₂(NO₃)₃] complexes.

Binding affinity of pyridines with AmIII/CmIII elucidated by density functional theory calculations

In recent decades, N-heterocyclic ligands have been extensively used in the separation of lanthanides/actinides, whereas the selective extraction of amercium or curium has been very challenging. Using density functional theory calculations, this study is devoted to the investigation of the binding affinity of a series of modelling pyridine ligands with Am^III and Cm^III. The structure-property correlations between the amercium and curium systems and the binding affinity were obtained, and promising strategies for efficient separation of Am^III/Cm^III were proposed.

Spectroscopic speciation of aqueous Am(iii)–oxalate complexes

Speciation, thermodynamic stability, and structural information of aqueous oxalato-Am(iii) complexes were resolved by combinatorial use of UV-Vis-LWCC, TRLFS, and DFT calculations.

Role of Ligand Straining in Complexation of Eu3+-Am3+ Ions by TPEN and PPDEN, Scalar Relativistic DFT Exploration in Conjunction with COSMO-RS

To search for new ligands suitable for the separation of minor actinides (MA) from lanthanides (Ln) in nuclear waste reprocessing, theoretical (density functional theory) studies were carried out on the complexation (structures, bonding, and thermodynamics) of La³⁺, Sm³⁺, Eu³⁺, and Am³⁺ complexes with moderately soft donor ligands TPEN [N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine] and PPDEN [N,N,N',N″,N″-pentakis(2-pyridylmethyl) diethylenetriamine] in aqueous and nitrobenzene solutions. B3LYP level of theory was used in conjunction with the conductor-like screening model for real systems (COSMO-RS). The metal ions in [M(NO₃)₂(TPEN)]NO₃ and [M(NO₃)(PPDEN)](NO₃)₂ complexes were deca-coordinated with both TPEN and PPDEN. The enthalpy of the complexation with TPEN in an aqueous solution was found to be negative, indicating the exothermic nature of the reaction as observed in the experiments. The calculated values of free energy of complexation follow the experimental trend: Am³⁺ > Sm³⁺ > La³⁺. Furthermore, the calculated free energy with PPDEN is reduced compared to that with TPEN, which may be attributed to the ligand straining during complex formation, which is also reflected in greater residual charges on both the Eu³⁺ and Am³⁺ central ions in the complexes of octadentate PPDEN compared to hexadentate TPEN. The experimental complexation selectivity of Am³⁺ over Eu³⁺ with TPEN is established by employing COSMO-RS. Furthermore, TPEN is Am³⁺-selective, whereas PPDEN is Eu³⁺-selective, which could be exploited for the efficient separation of MA from Ln.

A theoretical study on the coordination behavior of some phosphoryl, carbonyl and sulfoxide derivatives in lanthanide complexation

The selectivity of phosphoryl P(O)R₃, sulfoxide S(O)R₂, and carbonyl C(O)R₂ (R = NH₂, CH₃, OH, and F) derivatives with lanthanide cations (La³⁺, Eu³⁺, Lu³⁺) was studied by density functional theory calculations. Theoretical approaches were also used to investigate energy and the nature of metal-ligand interaction in the model complexes. Atoms in molecules and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses were accomplished to understand the electronic structure of ligands, L, and the related complexes, L-Ln³⁺. NBO analysis demonstrated that the negative charge on phosphoryl, carbonyl, and sulfoxide oxygen (O_P, O_C, and O_S) has maximum and minimum values when the connected -R groups are -NH₂ and -F. The metal-ligand distance declines as, -F > -OH > -CH₃ > -NH₂. Charge density at the bond critical point and on the lanthanide cation in the L-Ln³⁺ complexes varies in the order -F < -OH < -CH₃ < -NH₂, due to greater ligand to metal charge transfer, which is well explained by energy decomposition analysis. It was also illustrated that E⁽²⁾ values of Lp(N) → σ*(Y-N) vary in the order P=O ˃ S=O ˃ C=O and the related values of Lp(N) → σ*(Y=O) change as C=O ˃ S=O ˃ P=O in (NH₂)_nYO ligands (Y = P, C, and S). Trends in the L-Ln³⁺ CP-corrected bond energies are in good accordance with the optimized O_Y⋯Ln distances. It seems that, comparing the three types of ligands studied, NH₂-substituted are the better coordination ligands. Application of a functionalized ionic liquid extractant tributylmethylammonium dibutyldiglycolamate ([A336][BDGA]) in light rare earth extraction and separation

A type of functionalized ionic liquid extractant, tributylmethylammonium dibutyldiglycolamate ([A336][BDGA]), was synthesized, and its extraction ability of light rare earth elements, namely, La(III), Ce(III), Pr(III) and Nd(III), wascompared with that of other functionalized ionic liquid extractants, including tributylmethylammonium dioctyldiglycolamate and diglycolic amide extractants N,N,N,N-tetrabutyl-3-oxapentane-diamide (TBDGA) and N,N,N,N-tetraoctyl-3-oxapentane-diamide (TODGA). The study of extraction behavior indicated that the ionic liquids exhibited better extraction properties than the amides under lower acidity conditions. The effects of the pH and concentration of the extractant on the extraction behavior of [A336][BDGA] on light rare earths were determined. A separation strategy of mixed light rare earths was investigated by means of extraction chromatography using [A336][BDGA] as the stationary phase. As a result, nearly pure La(III), Ce(III), Pr(III) and Nd(III) were obtained, respectively. A new strategy of separating mixed light rare earths was established by means of extraction chromatography. The stationary phase of [A336][BDGA] was used in this strategy. The four rare earths elements, La(III), Ce(III), Pr(III) and Nd(III), achieved baseline separation.

Quantum Chemistry Study on the Extraction of Trivalent Lanthanide Series by Cyanex301: Insights from Formation of Inner- and Outer-Sphere Complexes

The extraction of lanthanide series by Cyanex301, i.e., bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)dithiophosphinic acid (HC301), has been modeled by density functional theory calculation, taking into account the formation of both inner- and outer-sphere complexes. The inner-sphere complex Ln(C301)₃ and the outer-sphere complex Ln(H₂O)₉(C301)₃ are optimized, followed by the analysis of interaction energy, bond length, Laplacian bond orders, and Mulliken populations. The covalency degree increases in Ln-S and Ln-O bonds in the inner- and outer-sphere complexes, respectively, as the lanthanide series is traversed. Mulliken population analysis indicates the important role of the 5d-orbital participation in bonding in the formation of inner- and outer-sphere complexes. Two thermodynamic cycles regarding the formation of inner- and outer-sphere complexes are established to calculate the extraction Gibbs free energies (ΔG _extr), and relaxed potential energy surface scan is utilized to model the kinetic complexation of C301 anion with hydrated metal ions. Light lanthanides can form both inner- and outer-sphere complexes, whereas heavy lanthanides only form outer-sphere complexes in biphasic extraction. After adopting the data of forming inner-sphere complex for light Ln(III) and that of forming outer-sphere complexes for heavy Ln(III), the trend of the calculated -ΔG _extr agrees very well with that of the experimental distribution ratios on crossing the Ln(III) series. Results from this work help to theoretically understand the extraction behavior of Cyanex301 with respect to different Ln(III).

Enhanced free energy of extraction of Eu3+ and Am3+ ions towards diglycolamide appended calix[4]arene: insights from DFT-D3 and COSMO-RS solvation models

Density functional theory in conjunction with COSMO and COSMO-RS solvation models employing dispersion correction (DFT-D3) has been applied to gain an insight into the complexation of Eu³⁺/Am³⁺ with diglycolamide (DGA) and calix[4]arene appended diglycolamide (CAL4DGA) in ionic liquids by studying structures, energetics, thermodynamics and population analysis. The calculated Gibbs free energy for both Eu³⁺ and Am³⁺ ions with DGA was found to be smaller than that with CAL4DGA. The entropy of complexation was also found to be reduced to a large extent with DGA compared to complexation with CAL4DGA. The solution phase free energy was found to be negative and was higher for Eu³⁺ ion. The entropy of complexation was not only found to be further reduced but also became negative in the case of DGA alone. Though the entropy was found to be negative it could not outweigh the high negative enthalpic contribution. The same trend was observed in the solution where the free energy of extraction, ΔG, for Eu³⁺ ions was shown to be higher than that for Am³⁺ ions towards free DGA. But the values of ΔG and ΔΔG(= ΔG_Eu-ΔG_Am) were found to be much higher with CAL4DGA (-12.58 kcal mol^-1) in the presence of nitrate ions compared to DGA (-1.69 kcal mol^-1) due to enhanced electronic interaction and positive entropic contribution. Furthermore, both the COSMO and COSMO-RS models predict very close values of ΔΔΔG (= ΔΔG_CAL4DGA - ΔΔG_nDGA), indicating that both solvation models could be applied for evaluating the metal ion selectivity. The value of the reaction free energy was found to be higher after dispersion correction. The charge on the Eu and Am atoms for the complexes with DGA and CAL4DGA indicates the charge-dipole type interaction leading to strong binding energy. The present theoretical results support the experimental findings and thus might be of importance in the design of functionalized ligands.

Electronic g Tensors in UV Complexes-A Computational Study

The theory and computation of EPR parameters from first principles has seen a great deal of development over the past two decades. In particular, various techniques for the computation of the electronic g tensor have been implemented in many quantum chemistry packages. These methods have been successfully applied to paramagnetic organic species and transition metal systems. The situation is less well-understood and established in the case of actinide-containing molecules and there is a dearth of experimental data available for validation of computations. In this study quantum chemical techniques have been used to evaluate the g tensor for U^V complexes, for which experimental data are available for comparison. The g tensors were calculated using relatively simple, state-averaged complete active space self-consistent field (SA-CASSCF) calculations. This approach is shown to be capable of providing useful accuracy. Aspects of the computations that should be refined to provide a more quantitative approach are discussed. The key features of the underlying electronic structure that influence the computed g values are delineated, providing a simple physical picture of these subtle molecular properties.

Insight into the Complexation of Actinides and Lanthanides with Diglycolamide Derivatives: Experimental and Density Functional Theoretical Studies

Extraction of actinide (Pu⁴⁺, UO₂²⁺, Am³⁺) and lanthanide (Eu³⁺) ions was carried out using different diglycolamide (DGA) ligands with systematic increase in the alkyl chain length from n-pentyl to n-dodecyl. The results show a monotonous reduction in the metal ion extraction efficiency with increasing alkyl chain length and this reduction becomes even more prominent in case of the branched alkyl (2-ethylhexyl) substituted DGA (T2EHDGA) for all the metal ions studied. Steric hindrance provided by the alkyl groups has a strong influence in controlling the extraction behavior of the DGAs. The distribution ratio reduction factor, defined as the ratio of the distribution ratio values of different DGAs to that of T2EHDGA, in n-dodecane follows the order UO₂²⁺ > Pu⁴⁺ > Eu³⁺ > Am³⁺. Complexation of Nd³⁺ was carried out with the DGAs in methanol by carrying out UV-vis spectrophotometric titrations. The results indicate a significant enhancement in the complexation constants upon going from methyl to n-pentyl substituted DGAs. They decreased significantly for DGAs containing alkyl substituents beyond the n-pentyl group, which corresponds to the observed trend from the solvent extraction studies. DFT-based calculations were performed on the free and the Nd³⁺ complexes of the DGAs both in the gas and the solvent (methanol) phase and the results were compared the experimental observations. Luminescence spectroscopic investigations were carried out to understand the complexation of Eu³⁺ with the DGA ligands and to correlate the nature of the alkyl substituents on the photophysical properties of the Eu(III)-DGA complexes. The monoexponential nature of the decay profiles of the complex revealed the predominant presence of single species, while no water molecules were present in the inner coordination sphere of the Eu³⁺ ion.
