Hydrothermal synthesis of core-shell structured TbPO4:Ce(3+)@TbPO4:Gd(3+) nanocomposites for magnetic resonance and optical imaging

Synthesis of Ce/Gd@HA/PLGA Scaffolds Contributing to Bone Repair and MRI Enhancement

It is important for future clinical applications to design and synthesize multipurpose scaffolding materials for bone tissue engineering with high osteogenic induction and MRI capability. In the present study, we synthesized Ce/Gd@HA by co-doping Ce3+ and Gd3+ into hydroxyapatite (HA) using a hydrothermal synthesis method, and then Ce/Gd@HA composites were synthesized by combining Ce/Gd@HA nanoparticles with polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) to investigate whether implanted Ce/Gd@HA/PLGA composites could promote osteoblast viability, leading to tibia repair of the rats and enhance MRI. The measurement results contain X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) showing that HA doped with Ce3+ and Gd3+ was still a hexagonal crystal with high crystallinity. The synthesized Ce/Gd@HA/PLGA composites have a structure and obvious magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) capability. The in vitro experimental results indicated that Ce/Gd@HA/PLGA composites significantly promoted the performance of MC3T3-E1 cells, containing proliferation, adhesion, and osteogenic differentiation capacities. These include the improvement of alkaline phosphatase activity, enhancement of mineral deposition, and upregulation of OCN and COL-1 gene expression. The in vivo experimental results demonstrated that the Ce/Gd@HA/PLGA composites significantly improved the healing rate of rat bone defects. The MRI images indicated that the Ga-doped composites were observed in the MRI T1 sequence in rats. The aforementioned results suggested that Ce/Gd@HA/PLGA composites not only effectively promoted bone formation but also enhanced MRI capability. The composites synthesized in this study have great potential in bone regeneration with an extensive application in bone tissue engineering.

Novel Enhanced Lanthanide Electrochemiluminescence Luminophores: Ce3+-Doped TbPO4 Facile Synthesis and Detection for Mucin1

Despite the upsurging interest in electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of lanthanides, the research in this field is still in its infancy due to the low intensity. In this work, a series of Ce³⁺-doped terbium orthophosphates (TbPO₄:Ce) in different proportions have been synthesized through the co-precipitation method at room temperature. Meanwhile, through the investigation of morphologies and ECL properties of these TbPO₄:Ce, it is concluded that the ECL intensity reaches the maximum when the molar ratio of Tb/Ce is 9:1 and the material is nanorod-shaped. The ECL intensity of TbPO₄:Ce is significantly improved by doping with Ce³⁺ due to the dual sensitization strategy of the antenna effect from PO₄^3- to Tb³⁺ and the energy transfer from Ce³⁺ to Tb³⁺. Interestingly, doping with Ce³⁺ can not only adjust morphology of TbPO₄:Ce but also improve the ECL intensity. In addition, to verify the application of TbPO₄:Ce, two single mucin1 (MUC1) aptamers are linked together to form a dual MUC1 aptamer chain. Then, a simple and sensitive ECL biosensor is constructed for the detection of MUC1, which can recognize the double amount of MUC1 and quench the ECL signal. As expected, the proposed biosensor shows good stability and acceptable selectivity and achieves sensitive detection of MUC1 with a dynamic range from 1 fg·mL^-1 to 10 ng·mL^-1 and a limit of detection of 0.5 fg·mL^-1. This work may pave a new avenue for the study of direct ECL emission of lanthanides and prove to be ideal for the research of new ECL luminophores in electrochemical analysis.

Effect of Cationic Brush-Type Copolymers on the Colloidal Stability of GdPO4 Particles with Different Morphologies in Biological Aqueous Media

In this study, we present the synthesis of cationic brush-type polyelectrolytes and their use in the stabilization of GdPO4 particles in aqueous media. Polymers of various compositions were synthesized via the RAFT polymerization route. SEC equipped with triple detection (RI, DP, RALS, and LALS) was used to determine the molecular parameters (Mn, Mw, Mw/Mn). The exact composition of synthesized polymers was determined using NMR spectroscopy. Cationic brush-type polymers were used to improve the stability of aqueous GdPO4 particle dispersions. First, the IEPs of GdPO4 particles with different morphologies (nanorods, hexagonal nanoprisms, and submicrospheres) were determined by measuring the zeta potential of bare particle dispersions at various pH values. Afterward, cationic brush-type polyelectrolytes with different compositions were used for the surface modification of GdPO4 particles (negatively charged in alkaline media under a pH value of ∼10.6). The concentration and composition effects of used polymers on the change in particle surface potential and stability (DLS measurements) in dispersions were investigated and presented in this work. The most remarkable result of this study is redispersible GdPO4 nanoparticle colloids with increased biocompatibility and stability as well as new insights into possible cationic brush-type polyelectrolyte applicability in both scientific and commercial fields.

High-efficient fabrication of core-shell-shell structured SiO2@GdPO4:Tb@SiO2 nanoparticles with improved luminescence

SiO₂@GdPO₄:Tb@SiO₂ nanoparticles with core-shell-shell structure were successfully synthesized by a cheap silane coupling agent grafting method at room temperature. This method not only homogeneously coated rare-earth phosphate nanoparticles on the surface of silica spheres but also saved the use of rare-earth resources. The obtained nanoparticles consisted of SiO₂ core with a diameter of approximately 210 nm, GdPO₄:Tb intermediate shell with thickness of approximately 7 nm, and SiO₂ outer shell with thickness of approximately 20 nm. This unique core-shell-shell structured nanoparticles exhibited strong luminescence properties compared with GdPO₄:Tb nanoparticles. The core-shell-shell structured nanoparticles can effectively quench the intrinsic fluorescence of bovine serum albumin through a static quenching mode. The as-synthesized nanoparticles show great potential in biological cell imaging and cancer treatment.

Scheelite like NaTb(WO4)2 nanoparticles: Green fluorescence and in vitro cell imaging applications

This study highlights the investigation of the green fluorescence in NaTb(WO₄)₂ materials (NaTbW Bulk and NaTbW Nano) synthesized via template free hydrothermal method as a function of particle size and morphology. Herein, we demonstrated the biocompatibility and intracellular green fluorescence of NaTbW Nano samples using HeLa cells for cell imaging applications. Powder X-ray diffraction studies showed that the as synthesized NaTbW Bulk and NaTbW Nano crystallize in the Scheelite like tetragonal crystal system with the I4₁/a space group. The reaction pH and solvent is observed to play a critical role in determining particle size, shape and morphology of these luminescent materials. Furthermore, size dependent optical properties were systematically studied by diffuse reflectance, steady state photoluminescence; time resolved fluorescence lifetime and quantum yield measurements. Both the materials have shown bright green fluorescence upon UV excitation as a function of particle size. Remarkable high quantum yield of NaTbW Bulk indicated its greater luminescence efficiency and the closer CIE coordinates to the commercial green illuminant suggested their potential use in solid state display systems. On the other hand the observed biocompatibility of NaTbW Nano particles towards mammalian cancer HeLa cells, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and the intracellular green fluorescence rightly proved its functionality as active bio-probes. Thus, our work summarize the potential use of these Scheelite like NaTb(WO₄)₂ material for solid state display and bio-imaging applications.

Nanoheterostructures (NHS) and Their Applications in Nanomedicine: Focusing on In Vivo Studies

Inorganic nanoparticles have great potential for application in many fields, including nanomedicine. Within this class of materials, inorganic nanoheterostructures (NHS) look particularly promising as they can be formulated as the combination of different domains; this can lead to nanosystems with different functional properties, which, therefore, can perform different functions at the same time. This review reports on the latest development in the synthesis of advanced NHS for biomedicine and on the tests of their functional properties in in vivo studies. The literature discussed here focuses on the diagnostic and therapeutic applications with special emphasis on cancer. Considering the diagnostics, a description of the NHS for cancer imaging and multimodal imaging is reported; more specifically, NHS for magnetic resonance, computed tomography and luminescence imaging are considered. As for the therapeutics, NHS employed in magnetic hyperthermia or photothermal therapies are reported. Examples of NHS for cancer theranostics are also presented, emphasizing their dual usability in vivo, as imaging and therapeutic tools. Overall, NHS show a great potential for biomedicine application; further studies, however, are necessary regarding the safety associated to their use.

Synthesis and photoluminescence properties of novel core–shell–shell SiO2@CePO4:Tb@SiO2 submicro-spheres

The low-cost preparation of the core–shell–shell SiO₂@CePO₄:Tb@SiO₂ was achieved, and the biocompatibility was improved with the use of SiO₂.

Highly bright multicolour emission through energy migration in core/shell nanotubes

Multicolour photoluminescence was achieved in gadolinium-based core/shell nanotube structures via energy migration of Ce³⁺→Gd³⁺→Ln³⁺ and Ce³⁺→Ln³⁺ (Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy and Sm) in separated layers.
