Synthesis, Molecular, and Supramolecular Structures of Two Azide-Bridged Cd(II) and Cu(II) Coordination Polymers. Symmetry (Basel) 2023. Abstract
Two 1D coordination polymers were synthesized by reaction of two ligands, 2-amino-4-picoline (2A4Pic) and quinoline-6-carboxylic acid (Qu-6-COOH) with two metal (II) nitrate (M = Cd and Cu) in the presence of azide as a linker. The synthesized metal complexes [Cd(2A4Pic)2(N3)2]n; (1) and [Cu(Qu-6-COO)(N3)(H2O)]n; (2) were isolated in single crystals and their X-ray structures revealed a 1D polymeric structure. Due to symmetry considerations, the asymmetric formula is half a [Cd(2A4Pic)2(N3)2] unit for 1 and one [Cu(Qu-6-COO)(N3)(H2O)] unit for 2. In complex 1, the Cd(II) is hexa-coordinated with two 2A4Pic molecules and four μ(1,1) azide units. Hence, the CdN6 coordination environment has a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. In 2, the Cu(II) is hexa-coordinated with three different ligands (Qu-6-COO¯, H2O and μ(1,1) N3¯) where all are connectors between the crystallographically related Cu(II) sites. Additionally, complex 2 distorted CuN2O4 octahedral geometry. In both complexes, the polymer arrays are connected by N…H hydrogen bonds and π–π stacking interactions. Based on Hirshfeld analysis, the percentages of N…H contacts are 43.1 and 27.4% for 1 and 2, respectively, while %C...C are 5.6 and 9.3%, respectively. Analysis of Cu-N, Cu-O, and Cd-N bonds using DFT calculations showed predominantly closed-shell coordination interactions with little covalent characters. Additionally, the negatively charged ligand groups were found to compensate the positive charge of the central metal ion to a larger extent than the electrically neutral ligands.

Coexistence of Spin Canting and Metamagnetism in a One-Dimensional Mn(II) Compound Bridged by Alternating Double End-to-End and Double End-On Azido Ligands and the Analog Co(II) Compound. Abstract
Two new compounds of general formula [M(N3)2(dmbpy)] in which dmbpy = 5,5′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine, and M = Mn(II) or Co(II), have been solvothermally synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The structures consist of zig-zag polymeric chains with alternating bis-µ(azide-N1)2M and bis-µ(azide-N1,N3)2M units in which the cis-octahedrally based coordination geometry is completed by the N,N’-chelating ligand dmbpy. The molecular structures are basically the same for each metal. The Mn(II) compound has a slightly different packing mode compared to the Co(II) compound, resulting from their different space groups. Interestingly, relatively weak interchain interactions are present in both compounds and this originates from π–π stacking between the dmbpy rings. The magnetic properties of both compounds have been investigated down to 2 K. The measurements indicate that the manganese compound shows spin-canted antiferromagnetic ordering with a Néel temperature of TN = 3.4 K and further, a field-induced magnetic transition of metamagnetism at temperatures below the TN. This finding affords the first example of an 1D Mn(II) compound with alternating double end-on (EO) and double end-to-end (EE) azido-bridged ligands, showing the coexistence of spin canting and metamagnetism. The cobalt compound shows a weak ferromagnetism resulting from a spin-canted antiferromagnetism and long-range magnetic ordering with a critical temperature, TC = 16.2 K.

Abstract
This Article reports the syntheses, structural characterization, and magnetic studies of four different Cu(II)-azido compounds based on imidazole or substituted imidazole ligand. The compounds, [Cu2(μ1,1-N3)2(EtimiH)4(ClO4)2] (1) (EtimiH = 2-ethylimidazole), [Cu2(μ-Meimi(-))(MeimiH)2(μ1,1-N3)2(μ1,3-N3)]n (2) (MeimiH = 2-methylimidazole; μ-Meimi(-) is the bridging mononegative anion of 2-methylimidazole), [Cu2(μ-imi(-))(imiH)2(μ1,1-N3)2(μ1,3-N3)]n (3), and [{Cu2(μ1,1-N3)2(μ1,3-N3)(μ-imi(-))(imiH)3}·H2O]n (4) (imiH = imidazole; μ-imi(-) = bridging mononegative anion of imidazole), have been synthesized by the self-assembly of Cu(II) salts, azide ion, and the corresponding imidazole bridging ligands. By changing the substitution on the second linker (imidazole or substituted imidazole) and varying synthetic conditions, diverse structural and magnetic features have been achieved in compounds 1-4. Compound 1 has a double end-on azido bridged dinuclear core, while the other compounds (2-4) have 2D networks. Compound 2 and 3 contain 1D chains with alternate μ1,1-N3 and μ-Meimi(-) bridging, and such chains are further connected through a μ1,3-N3 bridge to result in the formation of the 2D network. Compound 4 is a novel 2D coordination polymer consisting of a zigzag 1D coordination chain having (μ1,1-N3)2, μ-imi(-), and (μ1,3-N3)2 bridging groups and the chains undergo bridging through a μ1,3-N3 group resulting in the 2D network. Temperature dependent magnetic measurements show diverse magnetic properties of 1-4. Such versatile magnetic behaviors have been correlated to the respective bridging mode of azide and the corresponding imidazole bridging ligands.
