Abstract
In the last few years, tin(IV) complexes have emerged as very attractive candidates in the field of molecular imaging due to their unique photophysical properties. Despite the few reviews published to date covering the chemistry of organotin and tin complexes and their cytotoxic potential, there are no reviews devoted to their live cell imaging properties. Therefore, this feature article summarizes the discussion of the fundamental photophysical properties of fluorescent tin metal complexes focusing on their recent advances in "biomedical molecular imaging". A debate on the design of tin complexes as cellular imaging agents relating to their chemical, electronic and photophysical properties is enclosed. This paper also discusses the imaging applications of tin complexes in cells, tissues, and organisms via confocal and multiphoton imaging for sensing mechanisms in cellular media, bioimaging, and therapeutic labeling. In addition, it explores and explains the current challenges and prospects associated with these tin complexes as emerging luminescent cellular agents for potential clinical use.

Abstract
Compared to general fluorescent dyes, multi-photon fluorescent dyes exhibit deeper tissue penetration and lower auto-fluorescence in the bio-imaging field. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an efficient multiphoton imaging agent for deep tissue imaging. In this work, an organotin derivative (HSnBu3) has been designed and synthesized, which shows multiphoton absorption activity. In constrast to the ignorable three-photon activity of the ligand, the complex (HSnBu3) exhibits three-photon activity under NIR excitation (1500 nm). Results of chemical and biological tests confirmed that HSnBu3 was more easily activated by oxygen resulting in a higher level of 1O2, which could induce a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential in HepG2 cells. It suggests that HSnBu3 has potential in photodynamic therapy.

Abstract
Organotins(IV) exhibit significant in vitro anti-proliferative activity, while the in vivo tests are encouraging. The recent reports on the anti-proliferative activity of organotin(IV) compounds are summarized in this review. The period covered by this work goes back to 2009 until late 2018, while the earlier ones, are included over the previous review of our group published by S.K. Hadjikakou, N. Hadjiliadis, in Coord Chem Rev, 253 (2009) 235-249. During the last decade (2009-2018), >300 organotin(IV) derivatives with oxygen-donor ligands, such as carboxylic acids, amino-acids, Non Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), biological active derivatives or natural products, organotins(IV) with sulfur containing ligands such as thiones, thiosemicarbazones, dithiocarbamates, organotin(IV) compounds of oximes and organotins(IV) with amines or semicarbazones were screened for their anti-proliferative effect against various cancer cell lines and their results are included in numerous reports over this period. Although much work has been carried out on organotin(IV) derivatives with O-donor ligands, however significant fewer reports are found on organotins(IV) with oximes as ligands.

Abstract
Zinc is a biocompatible element that exists as the second most abundant transition metal ion and an indispensable trace element in the human body. Compared to traditional metal-organic complexes systems, d10 metal ZnII complexes not only exhibit a large Stokes shift and good photon stability but also possess strong emission and low cytotoxicity with a relatively small molecular weight. The use of ZnII complexes has emerged in the last decade as a versatile and convenient tool for numerous biological applications, including bioimaging, molecular and protein recognition, as well as photodynamic therapy. Herein, we review recent developments involving ZnII metal complexes applied as specific subcellular compartment imaging probes and their correlated utilizations.

Abstract
Boron and tin complexes have been a versatile and very interesting scaffold for the design of nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores. In this paper we present a wide range of reports since the 1990s to date, which include second-order (e.g., second harmonic generation) and third-order (e.g., two-photon absorption) NLO properties. After a short introduction on the origin of the NLO response in molecules, the different features associated with the introduction of these inorganic motifs in the organic-based NLO materials are discussed: Their effect on the accepting/donating capabilities of the substituents, on the efficiency of the π-conjugated linkage, and on the topology of the chromophores which can be tuned from the first generation of “push-pull” chromophores to more sophisticated two- or three-dimensional architectures.

Abstract
Compared to organotin (IV) compounds with biochemical activity, two-photon absorption (2PA) organotin (IV) complexes for targeting nuclear with anticancer activities are rarely reported. Here, two novel 2PA organotin (IV) cyano carboxylate complexes (C1Sn-1, C1Sn-2) are synthesized and characterized. The two-photon absorption cross section values (δ) in the near-infrared region are significantly enhanced for C1Sn-2 compared to C1Sn-1, thus developing for targeting nuclear by two-photon fluorescence microscopy (2PFM). C1Sn-2 could specifically target nuclear DNA in vitro. The mechanism demonstrated that there are abundant hydrogen bond interactions between hydroxy group of C1Sn-2 and DNA. The animal mode studies are first proposed that C1Sn-2 displayed a certain anti-cancer efficiency with non-significant toxicity.

Abstract
Probe for dual-site target distinct subcellular compartments from cytosol and nucleus is an attractive approach, however, which was scarcely reported. Herein, a series of small-molecular thiophene pyridium salt derivatives (MitoNuc1-4) possessing water-soluble, high quantum yield and two-photon activity were rationally designed, and their structures were crystallographic confirmed. Systematic photophysical and biological imaging property investigations were carried out for them. It was found that MitoNuc1-4 exhibit two-photon absorption properties in the near infrared region, and MitoNuc1 has membrane permeability and cationic nature, rendering it to be double labelling of mitochondria and nucleolus in living cells with superb photo-stability and non-invasiveness. It also demonstrated that MitoNuc1 in living cells can monitor mitochondrial division in real time and revealed nucleolar ultrastructure under stimulated emission depletion nanoscopy.

Abstract
In this study, a two-photon active DiphenthioER1 was screened from the four pyridinium sulfonate salt derivatives (TriphenER1-2 and DiphenthioER1-2) for imaging endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and tracking the dynamics of the ER morphology. The photophysical properties of TriphenER1-2 and DiphenthioER1-2 were systemically investigated both experimentally and theoretically, revealing that they possess large Stokes shifts, and large two-photon absorption cross-sections from 163 GM to 2023 GM in the near infrared region using a Z-scan method by avoiding spontaneous fluorescence, deep tissue penetration, and low cell damage in living cells. Among them, the DiphenthioER1 compound was found to exhibit the highest cellular uptake ability and two-photon fluorescence signals using confocal microscopy. DiphenthioER1 successfully targeted the ER and induced ER-stress, subsequently nuclear misshaping and mitochondria-mediated apoptosis have been displayed. This study thus provides great insights into designing novel two-photon fluorescent materials with dual functionality and offers tools to understand the ER-stress related mechanism for cell and chemical biologists.

Abstract
The application of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer is hindered by the intrinsic defects of the currently available photosensitizers (PSs), such as poor water solubility and limited light-penetration depth. In this study, pH-responsive polymeric micelles that co-encapsulate therapeutic PSs and organooxotin two-photon compounds were applied for two-photon PDT (TP-PDT) against breast cancer. The TP-PDT effect of the drug-loaded micelles was “activated” when the micelles turned into aggregates at a triggering pH level. The in vitro therapeutic effect was evaluated on 4T1 murine breast cancer cells by viability assays, real-time morphology collapsing, and reactive oxygen species determination. Time-dependent ex vivo organ distribution and in vivo anticancer efficacy results suggested that the drug carriers could accumulate in tumors and suppress tumor growth by TP-PDT. The delivery system could enhance the solubility and distribution of PSs and, if administered along with a tissue-penetrating prolonged light source, could thus have good potential for cancer therapy.

Abstract
The application of two-photon absorption (2PA) materials is a classical research field and has recently attracted increasing interest. It has generated a demand for new dyes with high 2PA cross-sections. In this short review, we briefly cover the structure-2PA property relationships of organic fluorophores, organic-inorganic nanohybrids and metal complexes explored by our group. (1) The two-photon absorption cross-section (δ) of organic fluorophores increases with the extent of charge transfer, which is important to optimize the core, donor-acceptor pair, and conjugation-bridge to obtain a large δ value. Among the various cores, triphenylamine appears to be an efficient core. Lengthening of the conjugation with styryl groups in the D-π-D quadrupoles and D-π-A dipoles increased δ over a long wavelength range than when vinylene groups were used. Large values of δ were observed for extended conjugation length and moderate donor-acceptors in the near-IR wavelengths. The δ value of the three-arm octupole is larger than that of the individual arm, if the core has electron accepting groups that allow significant electronic coupling between the arms; (2) Optical functional organic/inorganic hybrid materials usually show high thermal stability and excellent optical activity; therefore the design of functional organic molecules to build functional organic-inorganic hybrids and optimize the 2PA properties are significant. Advances have been made in the design of organic-inorganic nanohybrid materials of different sizes and shapes for 2PA property, which provide useful examples to illustrate the new features of the 2PA response in comparison to the more thoroughly investigated donor-acceptor based organic compounds and inorganic components; (3) Metal complexes are of particular interest for the design of new materials with large 2PA ability. They offer a wide range of metals with different ligands, which can give rise to tunable electronic and 2PA properties. The metal ions, including transition metals and lanthanides, can serve as an important part of the structure to control the intramolecular charge-transfer process that drives the 2PA process. As templates, transition metal ions can assemble simple to more sophisticated ligands in a variety of multipolar arrangements resulting in interesting and tailorable electronic and optical properties, depending on the nature of the metal center and the energetics of the metal-ligand interactions, such as intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT) and metal-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) processes. Lanthanide complexes are attractive for a number of reasons: (i) their visible emissions are quite long-lived; (ii) their absorption and emission can be tuned with the aid of appropriate photoactive ligands; (iii) the accessible energy-transfer path between the photo-active ligands and the lanthanide ion can facilitate efficient lanthanide-based 2PA properties. Thus, the above materials with excellent 2PA properties should be applied in two-photon applications, especially two-photon fluorescence microscopy (TPFM) and related emission-based applications. Furthermore, the progress of research into the use of those new 2PA materials with moderate 2PA cross section in the near-infrared region, good Materials 2017, 10, 223 2 of 37 biocompatibility, and enhanced two-photon excited fluorescence for two-photon bio-imaging is summarized. In addition, several possible future directions in this field are also discussed (146 references).
