Synthesis, X-ray Studies and Photophysical Properties of Iridium(III) Complexes Incorporating Functionalized 2,2':6',2″ Terpyridines and 2,6-Bis(thiazol-2-yl)pyridines

A series of iridium(III) triimine complexes incorporating 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (terpy) and 2,6-bis(thiazol-2-yl)pyridine (dtpy) derivatives were successfully designed and synthesized to investigate the impact of the peripheral rings (pyridine, thiazole) and substituents (thiophene, bithiophene, EDOT) attached to the triimine skeleton on their photophysical properties. The Ir(III) complexes were fully characterized using IR, 1H, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray analysis. Their thermal properties were evaluated using TGA measurements. Photoluminescence spectra of [IrCl3L1-6] were investigated in solution at 298 and 77 K. The experimental studies were accompanied by DFT/TDDFT calculations. The photophysical properties of the synthesized triimine ligands and Ir(III) complexes were studied in detail by electronic absorption and emission. In solution, they exhibited photoluminescence quantum yields ranging from 1.27% to 5.30% depending on the chemical structure. The experimental research included DFT/TDDFT calculations. Novel fluorescent probe for sequential recognition of Zn2+ and pyrophosphate in aqueous based on aggregation-induced emission

A new fluorescent probe (E)-4-(4-([2,2':6',2''-terpyridin]-4'-yl)styryl)-1-dodecylpyridin-1-ium (TPy-SD), with the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property in aqueous solution, has been synthesized and characterized. The new probe, TPy-SD exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Zn²⁺ with a relatively low detection limit (1.76 × 10^-7 M). The addition of Zn²⁺ is thought to disrupt the AIE property of TPy-SD, thereby leading to a fluorescence blue shift. Interestingly, the complex of probe TPy-SD with Zn²⁺ (Zn (II) TPy-SD), with molar ratio of 1:1, can be used as a simple, sensitive, and rapid means for the detection of pyrophosphates (PPi) in solution (water/DMSO = 99:1). As evidenced by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and fluorescence emission spectroscopy, this detection is thought to be due to the strong affinity between PPi and Zn²⁺, which brings out Zn²⁺ from the coordination cavity of chemical sensor TPy-SD, thus realizing the detection and recognition of PPi. Therefore, the new AIE fluorescent probe can be used as a dual probe for the detection of cations and anions.

Interfacial Self-Assembly of Organized Ultrathin Films of Tripodal Metal-Terpyridyl Coordination Polymers as Luminophores and Heterogeneous Catalysts for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Metal-directed interfacial self-assembly of well-defined coordination polymer (CP) ultrathin films can control the metal complex arrangement and distribution at the molecular level, providing a convenient route for the design and fabrication of novel opto-electrical devices and heterogeneous catalysts. Here, we report the assembly of two series of CP multilayers with the transition-metal ions of Fe²⁺, Co²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Tb³⁺ as connectors and tripodal terpyridyl ligands of 4,4',4″-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tris(1-(4-([2,2':6',2″-terpyridin]-4'-yl)benzyl)pyridin-1-ium) (TerPyTa) and 4,4',4″-(benzene-1,3,5-triyl)tris(1-(4-([2,2':6',2″-terpyridin]-4'-yl)benzyl)pyridin-1-ium) (TerPyBen) as linkers at the air-water interface. The as-prepared Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films display strong luminescence, with the emission wavelength and relative intensity dependent on both the metal ions and linkers; among them, the Zn-TerPyTa and Zn-TerPyBen CPs give off the strongest luminescent emission centered at about 370 nm with an emission lifetime of approximately 0.2-0.3 ns. The Tb-TerPyTa CPs can give off emission at approximately 490, 546, 586, and 622 nm, attributed to the ⁵D₄ to ⁷F_3-6 electron transitions of typical Tb³⁺ ions. Finally, these CP LB films can act as efficient heterogeneous photocatalysts for the CO₂ reduction to selectively produce CO. The catalytic efficiency can be optimized by adjusting the experimental conditions (light sensitizer, electron donor, and water content) and CP composition (metal ion and ligand) with an excellent yield of up to 248.1 mmol g^-1. In particular, it is revealed that, under the same conditions, the catalytic efficiency of the Fe-TerPyTa CP LB film is nearly 2 to 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of the other metalated complexes investigated in the homogeneous system. UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry studies demonstrated that the dual active sites of Fe-terpyridine and TerPyTa units contribute to the enhanced catalytic activity. This work provides an effective method to introduce the earth-abundant metal complexes into CP films to construct efficient noble-metal-free photocatalysts for the CO₂ reduction.

One-Pot Reductive Methylation of Nitro- and Amino-Substituted (Hetero)Aromatics with DMSO/HCOOH: Concise Synthesis of Fluorescent Dimethylamino-Functionalized Bibenzothiazole Ligands with Tunable Emission Color upon Complexation

One-pot reductive N,N-dimethylation of suitable nitro- and amino-substituted (hetero)arenes can be achieved using a DMSO/HCOOH/Et₃N system acting as a low-cost but efficient reducing and methylating agent. The transformation of heteroaryl-amines can be accelerated by using dimethyl sulfoxide/oxalyl chloride or chloromethyl methyl sulfide as the source of active CH₃SCH₂⁺ species, while the exclusion of HCOOH in the initial stage of the reaction allows avoiding N-formamides as resting intermediates. The developed procedures are applicable in multigram-scale synthesis, and because of the lower electrophilicity of CH₃SCH₂⁺, they also work in pathological cases, where common methylating agents provide N,N-dimethylated products in no yield or inferior yields due to concomitant side reactions. The method is particularly useful in one-pot reductive transformation of 2-H-nitrobenzazoles to corresponding N,N-dimethylamino-substituted heteroarenes. These, upon Cu(II)-catalyzed oxidative homocoupling, afford 2,2'-bibenzazoles substituted with dimethylamino groups as charge-transfer N^N ligands with intensive absorption/emission in the visible region. The fluorescence of NMe₂-functionalized bibenzothiazoles remains intensive even upon complexation with ZnCl₂, while emission maxima are bathochromically shifted from the green/yellow to orange/red spectral region, making these small-molecule fluorophores, exhibiting large emission quantum yields and Stokes shifts, an attractive platform for the construction of various functional dyes and light-harvesting materials with tunable emission color upon complexation.

The Role of Zinc(II) Ion in Fluorescence Tuning of Tridentate Pincers: A Review

Tridentate ligands are simple low-cost pincers, easy to synthetize, and able to guarantee stability to the derived complexes. On the other hand, due to its unique mix of structural and optical properties, zinc(II) ion is an excellent candidate to modulate the emission pattern as desired. The present work is an overview of selected articles about zinc(II) complexes showing a tuned fluorescence response with respect to their tridentate ligands. A classification of the tridentate pincers was carried out according to the binding donor atom groups, specifically nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur donor atoms, and depending on the structure obtained upon coordination. Fluorescence properties of the ligands and the related complexes were compared and discussed both in solution and in the solid state, keeping an eye on possible applications.

Tuning the amphiphilicity of terpyridine-based fluorescent probe in water: Assembly and disassembly-controlled H g2+ sensing, removal, and adsorption of H2S

A water-soluble terpyridine-based cationic fluorescent probe (SP-TPy) was synthesized, which emerged with pH-dependent amphiphilicity, resulting in self-assembly and disassembly in aqueous media with the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property. In neutral water (pH 7.4), a moderate sensing response to Hg²⁺ ions was given by the self-assembly of SP-TPy. However, in acidic aqueous media, the monomer of SP-TPy not only appeared to be highly selective and sensitive for Hg²⁺ ions, but also displayed highly efficient removal of Hg²⁺ ions from solution by rapid precipitation, which was attributed to the coordination-triggered reassembly of SP-TPy. The removal efficiency of SP-TPy for Hg²⁺ was found to be over 99%. Further study indicated that the precipitates were composed of various polyhedral porous frameworks, a property that was further used to adsorb H₂S gas to form HgS complexes with higher uptake capacities. In addition, SP-TPy can be efficiently regenerated and recycled using a simple treatment with acidic water after adsorption of the H₂S gas.

Platinum(II) coordination compounds with 4'-pyridyl functionalized 2,2':6',2″-terpyridines as an alternative to enhanced chemotherapy efficacy and reduced side-effects

Two platinum(II) coordination compounds, [PtCl(4'-R¹-terpy)](SO₃CF₃) (1) and [PtCl(4'-R²-terpy)](SO₃CF₃) (2), with 4'-(2-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (4'-R¹-terpy) or 4'-(3-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (4'-R²-terpy) were synthesized and the impact of the pendant pyridyl ring on the structure and cytotoxic activity of Pt(II)-terpyridine complexes was explored. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed square planar coordination of the cations [PtCl(4'-Rⁿ-terpy)]⁺. The mode of binding of 1 and 2 to calf thymus DNA was examined by UV-Vis absorption titration, ethidium displacement assay and reaction with 9-ethylguanine, and the mixed covalent-intercalative mode was demonstrated. The cytotoxicity of the Pt(II) complexes against six cancer cell lines and three normal ones was determined using MTS (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium) assay and compared to cisplatin. The IC₅₀ values for the compound 2 towards the cancer cell lines are in the low micromolar range. Most remarkably, 2 was over 4 times more effective than 1 and cisplatin against non-small lung adenocarcinoma (A549), and its selectivity index was ~60-80 times higher than that for 1 and cisplatin. The mechanisms underlying the loss of viability under treatment of 2 was further investigated including F-actin staining, mitotic index analysis, cytometric cell cycle analysis, Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) -conjugated Annexin V antibody and propidium iodide (PI) staining, measurements of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells, analysis of changes in the mitochondrial mass and potential and quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) genes analysis. The compound 2 was found to have a pro-oxidative effect by strong stimulation of cells for the production of reactive oxygen species and cytostatic effect through cell cycle arrest.

Self-assembly of emissive metallocycles with tetraphenylethylene, BODIPY and terpyridine in one system

Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) related (supra)molecules have been intensively investigated due to their aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect based on the restriction of intramolecular rotation (RIR). Meanwhile, boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) tends to emit intense fluorescence with high quantum yields. Herein, we combined TPE, BODIPY and terpyridine (TPY) into one system to study the emissive behaviour of organic building block as well as a self-assembled metallo-supramolecule. The TPY and BODIPY substituents with bulky sizes provide strong hindrance to restrict the rotation of the phenyl groups on TPE, leading to enhancement of emissive properties in both solution and aggregation states. Furthermore, the BODIPY-TPE-TPY ligand (L) was assembled with Zn (II) through coordination-driven self-assembly to form a cyclic dimer (D) with typical AIE characteristics.

Synthesis, structure, and photophysical and electrochemical properties of Ru(ii) complexes of arylene-vinylene terpyridyl conjugates

A series of arylene-vinylene π-conjugated terpyridyl ruthenium(ii) complexes, [Ru(PPh3)2Cl(tpy-C6H4-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-Ar)][PF6] (1-4; tpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridyl, where Ar = phenyl, tolyl, 1-naphthyl and 9-anthracenyl as substituents at the 4' position of tpy), have been synthesized and characterized by multinuclear NMR, IR, HRMS and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The influence of the electronic nature of arylene groups on their photophysical and electrochemical properties has been investigated to understand the electronic interaction between the metal-organic redox centers. Furthermore, a σ-donor phenylacetylide group has been incorporated to accomplish [Ph-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Ru(PPh3)2(tpy-C6H4-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-Ar)][PF6] (5-8) complexes by the substitution of a coordinated chloride ligand and to investigate the change in their redox and photophysical properties. DFT studies have been performed to gain an insight into their electronic properties by determining the HOMO-LUMO energy levels and frontier molecular orbitals of all the synthesized Ru(ii) complexes.

Multicomponent Self-Assembly of Metallo-Supramolecular Macrocycles and Cages through Dynamic Heteroleptic Terpyridine Complexation

Spontaneous formation of the heteroleptic cadmium(II) bis(terpyridine) complex under ambient conditions can be achieved by a combination of 6,6''-di(2,6-dimethoxylphenyl)-substituted and unsubstituted terpyridine-based ligands. Building on this dynamic heteroleptic complexation, diverse metallo-supramolecular macrocycles and cages were readily assembled in quantitative yields from the predesigned multicomponent systems. The complementary ligation reinforced self-recognition to facilitate the shape-dependent self-sorting of a four-component dynamic library into two well-defined parallelograms. In addition, the subtle lability difference between homoleptic and heteroleptic complexes led to the site-selective Cd^II -Zn^II transmetalation in the Sierpiński triangle. Facile construction of a dodecanuclear tetrahedral metallocage was also realized by using two self-recognizable tritopic building blocks. The photophysical study of the metallo-supramolecules assembled from the d¹⁰ metal ions revealed intense ligand-based photoluminescence in solution. The self-assembly strategy described here provides an efficient methodology for building pre-programmable, sophisticated supramolecular architectures furnished with photoactivity.

Synthesis and properties of fluorescent 4'-azulenyl-functionalized 2,2':6',2″-terpyridines

4′-Azulenyl-substituted terpyridines were efficiently synthesized following the Kröhnke methodology via azulenylchalcone intermediates. These azulenyl-containing terpyridines showed fluorescent emission with a fluorescence quantum yield varying from 0.14, in the case of parent terpyridine, to 0.64 when methyl groups are grafted on the azulenyl seven-membered ring. According to the crystal structures and TDDFT calculations, different twisting of the aromatic constituents is responsible for the observed fluorescent behavior. The electrochemical profile contains one-electron oxidation/reduction steps, which can only be explained on the basis of the redox behavior of the azulene unit. The ability of the 4′-azulenyl 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine to bind poisoning metal cations was studied by UV–vis titrations using aqueous solutions of Hg(II) and Cd(II) chlorides as illustrative examples.
