Synergism of Light-Induced [4 + 4] Cycloaddition and Electron Transfer Toward Switchable Photoluminescence and Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior in a Dy4 Cubane

Molecular materials possessing switchable magneto-optical properties are of great interest due to their potential applications in spintronics and molecular devices. However, switching their photoluminescence (PL) and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior via light-induced structural changes still constitutes a formidable challenge. Here, a series of cubane structures were synthesized via self-assembly of 9-anthracene carboxylic acid (HAC) and rare-earth ions. All complexes exhibited obvious photochromic phenomena and complete PL quenching upon Xe lamp irradiation, which were realized via the synergistic effect of photogenerated radicals and [4 + 4] photocycloaddition of the AC components. The quenched PL showed the largest fluorescence intensity change (99.72%) in electron-transfer photochromic materials. A reversible decoloration process was realized via mechanical grinding, which is unexpectedly in the electron-transfer photochromic materials. Importantly, an SMM behavior of the Dy analog was observed after room-temperature irradiation due to the photocycloaddition of AC ligands and the photogenerated stable radicals changed the electrostatic ligand field and magnetic coupling. Moreover, based on the remarkably photochromic and photoluminescent properties of these compounds, 2 demos were applied to support their application in information anti-counterfeiting and inkless printing. This work, for the first time utilizing the simultaneous modulation of photocycloaddition and photogenerated radicals in one system, realizes complete PL quenching and light-induced SMM behavior, providing a dynamical switch for the construction of multifunctional polymorphic materials with optical response and optical storage devices.

Optical Phenomena in Molecule-Based Magnetic Materials

Since the last century, we have witnessed the development of molecular magnetism which deals with magnetic materials based on molecular species, i.e., organic radicals and metal complexes. Among them, the broadest attention was devoted to molecule-based ferro-/ferrimagnets, spin transition materials, including those exploring electron transfer, molecular nanomagnets, such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), molecular qubits, and stimuli-responsive magnetic materials. Their physical properties open the application horizons in sensors, data storage, spintronics, and quantum computation. It was found that various optical phenomena, such as thermochromism, photoswitching of magnetic and optical characteristics, luminescence, nonlinear optical and chiroptical effects, as well as optical responsivity to external stimuli, can be implemented into molecule-based magnetic materials. Moreover, the fruitful interactions of these optical effects with magnetism in molecule-based materials can provide new physical cross-effects and multifunctionality, enriching the applications in optical, electronic, and magnetic devices. This Review aims to show the scope of optical phenomena generated in molecule-based magnetic materials, including the recent advances in such areas as high-temperature photomagnetism, optical thermometry utilizing SMMs, optical addressability of molecular qubits, magneto-chiral dichroism, and opto-magneto-electric multifunctionality. These findings are discussed in the context of the types of optical phenomena accessible for various classes of molecule-based magnetic materials.

3D-Frameworks and 2D-networks of lanthanide coordination polymers with 3-pyridylpyrazole: photophysical and magnetic properties

A series of 15 lanthanide-containing coordination polymers, both 3D- and 2D-networks, as well as complexes of Ln-trichlorides with 3-(3-pyridyl)pyrazole (3-PyPzH), were synthesized. A large structural diversity is observed depending on the ligand content: 3∞[Ln(3-PyPzH)Cl₃], Ln = Eu and Gd, of sra topology, 2∞[Sm(3-PyPzH)Cl₃], 2∞[Ln₂(3-PyPzH)₃Cl₆]·2solv, Ln = Eu³⁺, Tb³⁺, Dy³⁺, Ho³⁺ and Er³⁺, solv = Tol and MeCN, of sql topology and 2∞[Ln(3-PyPzH₂)Cl₄], Ln = La and Nd, of hcb topology with salt like complexes of the formula [(3-PyPzH₂)][Ln(3-PyPzH)₂Cl₄], Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy and Ho. The products were characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, high-temperature X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetry (DTA/TG) combined with mass spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), IR-spectroscopy, UV-visible spectrophotometry, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility. Absorption spectroscopy shows ion-specific 4f-4f transitions that can be assigned to Sm³⁺, Eu³⁺, Dy³⁺, Ho³⁺ and Er³⁺ in a wide range from the UV-VIS to NIR region. An excellent antenna effect through ligand-metal energy transfer was observed in 2∞[Tb₂(3-PyPzH)₃Cl₆]·2solv, leading to high efficiency of the luminescence indicated by a quantum yield up to 76%. Direct current magnetic susceptibility studies reveal the absence of interatomic interaction for Dy³⁺ and Er³⁺ and weak ferromagnetic interaction for Ho³⁺. Thermal analysis shows good stability up to 365 °C for 2∞[Ho₂(3-PyPzH)₃Cl₆]·2MeCN.

Controlling dynamic magnetic properties of coordination clusters via switchable electronic configuration

Large-sized coordination clusters have emerged as a new class of molecular materials in which many metal atoms and organic ligands are integrated to synergize their properties. As dynamic magnetic materials, such a combination of multiple components functioning as responsive units has many advantages over monometallic systems due to the synergy between constituent components. Understanding the nature of dynamic magnetism at an atomic level is crucial for realizing the desired properties, designing responsive molecular nanomagnets, and ultimately unlocking the full potential of these nanomagnets for practical applications. Therefore, this review article highlights the recent development of large-sized coordination clusters with dynamic magnetic properties. These dynamic properties can be associated with spin transition, electron transfer, and valence fluctuation through their switchable electronic configurations. Subsequently, the article also highlights specialized characterization techniques with different timescales for supporting switching mechanisms, chemistry, and properties. Afterward, we present an overview of coordination clusters (such as cyanide-bridged and non-cyanide assemblies) with dynamic magnetic properties, namely, spin transition and electron transfer in magnetically bistable systems and mixed-valence complexes. In particular, the response mechanisms of coordination clusters are highlighted using representative examples with similar transition principles to gain insights into spin state and mixed-valence chemistry. In conclusion, we present possible solutions to challenges related to dynamic magnetic clusters and potential opportunities for a wide range of intelligent next-generation devices.

Redox-Modulations of Photophysical and Single-molecule Magnet Properties in Ytterbium Complexes Involving Extended-TTF Triads

The reaction between the 2,2’-benzene-1,4-diylbis(6-hydroxy-4,7-di-tert-butyl-1,3-benzodithiol-2-ylium-5-olate triad (H₂SQ) and the metallo-precursor [Yb(hfac)₃]⋅2H₂O led to the formation of a dinuclear coordination complex of formula [Yb₂(hfac)₆(H₂SQ)]⋅0.5CH₂Cl₂ (H₂SQ-Yb). After chemical oxidation of H₂SQ in 2,2’-cyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-diylidenebis(4,7-di-tert-butyl-1,3-benzodithiole-5,6-dione (Q), the latter triad reacted with the [Yb(hfac)₃]⋅2H₂O precursor to give the dinuclear complex of formula [Yb₂(hfac)₆(Q)] (Q-Yb). Both dinuclear compounds have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, DFT optimized structure and electronic absorption spectra. They behaved as field-induced Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) nevertheless the chemical oxidation of the semiquinone to quinone moieties accelerated by a factor of five the relaxation time of the magnetization of Q-Yb compared to the one for H₂SQ-Yb. The H₂SQ triad efficiently sensitized the Yb^III luminescence while the chemical oxidation of H₂SQ into Q induced strong modification of the absorption properties and thus a quenching of the Yb^III luminescence for Q-Yb. In other words, both magnetic modulation and luminescence quenching are reached by the oxidation of the protonated semiquinone into quinone.

Hysteresis Photomodulation via Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Isomerization of a Photochromic Chain of Dysprosium Single-Molecule Magnets

A one-dimensional coordination solid 1_c is synthesized by reaction of a bispyridyl dithienylethene (DTE) photochromic unit with the highly anisotropic dysprosium-based single-molecule magnet [Dy(Tp^py)F(pyridine)₂]PF₆. Slow magnetic relaxation characteristics are retained in the chain compound 1_c, and photoisomerization of the bridging DTE ligand induces a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation that can be monitored using photocrystallography. Notably, the resulting chain compound 1_o exhibits faster low-temperature relaxation than that of 1_c, which is apparent in magnetic hysteresis data collected for both compounds as high as 4 K. Ab initio calculations suggest that this photomodulation of the magnetic relaxation behavior is due to crystal packing changes rather than changes to the crystal field splitting upon ligand isomerization.

External stimuli modulate the magnetic relaxation of lanthanide single-molecule magnets

The magnetic relaxation of lanthanide single-molecule magnets (Ln-SMMs) can be modulated reversibly by external stimuli including light irradiation, thermal treatment, protonation/deprotonation and oxidation/reduction etc.

Switchable slow relaxation of magnetization in photochromic dysprosium(iii) complexes manipulated by a dithienylethene ligand

The admirable photochromic and magnetic properties of two dithienylethene-based complexes can be modulated with UV/Vis light irradiation.

Interplay of anthracene luminescence and dysprosium magnetism by steric control of photodimerization

Systematic control of the intermolecular pair-wise [4 + 4] photocycloaddition of a series of dysprosium phosphonates through fine-tuning of two different phosphonate ligands, one with a bidentate blocker and one with an anthracene antenna, both with alkyl substituents, reveals a size dependent rate. With bulky isopropyl on the diphosphonate blocker little response to UV light is observed. In contrast, compounds with ethyl which has less steric hindrance exhibit almost complete photocycloaddition. Interestingly, the alkyl substituents attached to anthracene monophosphonate have no evident effect on the reaction rate. Although no direct relationship can be found between the substitutions and the observed differences in field-induced single molecule magnetism, remarkable changes in magnetic dynamics are observed for complexes before and after the complete photocycloaddition reactions.

Lanthanide anthracene complexes: slow magnetic relaxation and luminescence in DyIII, ErIII and YbIII based materials

Four mononuclear lanthanide complexes, [Ln(depma)2(H2O)6]Cl3·xH2O·yCH3OH [Ln = Dy (1Dy), x = 6, y = 0; Gd (2Gd), x = 3, y = 1; Er (3Er), x = 6, y = 0; Yb (4Yb), x = 3, y = 1; depma = 9-diethylphosphono-methylanthracene], are reported and structurally characterized. The octa-coordinated environment of LnIII is composed of two oxygen atoms from two different depma ligands and six oxygen atoms from each bound water molecule. All four complexes show photoluminescence in the solid state at room temperature, originating from the ligand-centered emissions of depma. Furthermore, slow magnetization relaxation is found in 1Dy, 3Er and 4Yb with the energy barriers (Ueff) of 40.5 K (1 kOe), 9.8 K (1 kOe) and 28.9 K (0.75 kOe), respectively.

A supramolecular chain of dimeric Dy single molecule magnets decorated with azobenzene ligands

Dy^III dimers decorated with photo-isomerizable azobenzene ligands behave as single-molecule magnets and self-organize into a supramolecular chain. Ab initio calculations, magnetic and optical properties are reported.

The present work reviews switching of single-molecule magnetic behaviour achieved through various stimuli such as temperature, light irradiation, redox processes, solvation/desolvation, and magnetic field.

Reversible ON-OFF switching of single-molecule-magnetism associated with single-crystal-to-single-crystal structural transformation of a decanuclear dysprosium phosphonate

A decanuclear dysprosium phosphonate (I) undergoes two consecutive SC–SC transformations, associated with OFF–ON–OFF switching of its single-molecule-magnetism.

{Dy₅(EDDC)₂(μ₃-AcO)₂(μ₅-C₁₅H₁₁PO₃)(μ₄-C₁₅H₁₁PO₃)(μ₂-AcO)₂(AcO)₂(H₂O)(CH₃OH)₂}₂(μ₄-C₂O₄)·xH₂O (I), where H₂EDDC is N′,N′′,E,N′,N′′,E-N′,N′′-(ethane-1,2-diylidene)dipyrazine-2-carbohydrazide and C₁₅H₁₁PO₃H₂ is 9-anthrylmethylphosphonic acid, is found to undergo two consecutive single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations. The first is under UV irradiation (λ = 365 nm for 3 d in air) to {Dy₅(EDDC)₂(μ₃-AcO)₂(μ₅-C₁₅H₁₁PO₃)₂(μ₂-AcO)₂(AcO)₂(H₂O)₃}₂(μ₄-C₂O₄)·xH₂O (I-UV) where the two CH₃OH are replaced by two H₂O and the second by annealing under N₂ at 100 °C on a diffractometer or under Ar in a glovebox to {Dy₅(EDDC)₂(μ₃-AcO)₂(μ₅-C₁₅H₁₁PO₃)₂(μ₂-AcO)₄(H₂O)}₂(μ₄-C₂O₄) (I-A-N₂ or I-A-Ar) where it has lost two H₂O molecules. The second transformation is reversible by exposure to air at room temperature (I-A-N₂-cool). While the overall structures are the same (retaining the space group P2₁/c), there is a considerable expansion of the unit cell from I (8171 ų) to I-UV (8609 ų) and I-A-N₂ (8610 ų) and the coordinations of the Dy atoms undergo major reconstructions. This is associated with switching the single-molecule-magnetism (SMM) from OFF for I to ON for I-UV and to OFF again for I-A-Ar in air. Such a switching mechanism associated with the retention of crystallinity is unique in the chemistry of dysprosium. The structure of the molecule is formed from two symmetry related pentamers joined by an oxalate. A related compound containing two isolated neutral pentamers {Dy₅(EDDC)₂(μ₃-AcO)₂(μ₅-C₁₅H₁₁PO₃)₂(μ₂-AcO)₃(AcO)₂(H₂O)₂}{Dy₅(EDDC)₂(μ₃-AcO)₂(μ₅-C₁₅H₁₁PO₃)(μ₄-C₁₅H₁₁PO₃)(μ₂-AcO)₃(AcO)₂(CH₃OH)₂}·2CHCl₃ (II) has also been isolated with closely related Dy coordination and it exhibits similar SMM behaviour in zero field.

Photo-activation of Single Molecule Magnet Behavior in a Manganese-based Complex

A major roadblock to fully realizing molecular electronic devices is the ability to control the properties of each molecule in the device. Herein we report the control of the magnetic properties of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), which can be used in memory devices, by using a photo-isomerizable diarthylenthene ligand. Photo-isomerization of the diarylethene ligand bridging two manganese salen complexes with visible light caused a significant change in the SMM behavior due to opening of the six-membered ring of diarylethene ligand, accompanied by reorganization of the entire molecule. The ring-opening activated the frequency-dependent magnetization of the complex. Our results are a major step towards the realization of molecular memory devices composed of SMMs because the SMM behaviour can be turned on and off simply by irradiating the molecule.

Bisthienylethene Th2im and its complex (Th2imH)2[ReCl6]: crystalline-phase photochromism, and photochemical regulation of luminescence and magnetic properties

Molecular assembly of bisthienylethene Th2im (1) and [ReCl6]2− anions leads to the complex (Th2imH)2[ReCl6] (2), in which a [ReCl6]2(-) anion connects two equivalent Th2imH+ cations through Cl⋯N/C hydrogen bonds. Crystal structures of 1 and 2 indicate that two thiophene groups of each Th2im/Th2imH+ molecule adopt a photoactive antiparallel conformation. Thus, two compounds show crystalline-phase photochromism (CPP), i.e. reversible structural transformation between the open form and the closed form upon alternately irradiating the sample with UV light (365 nm) and visible light (574 nm for 1, 624 nm for 2). It was found that the CPP behaviors of 1 and 2 could regulate their luminescence and/or magnetic properties. Their solid-state emissions (433, 448, 482, 531 and 570 nm for 1, and 460, 489, 535 and 593 nm for 2) exhibited weaker intensities after UV irradiation with 365 nm light. Besides CPP and luminescence, compound 2 shows field-induced slow magnetic relaxation. Before and after UV irradiation, this compound revealed different magnetic behaviors, including the differences in the shape of the χMT vs. T plot, D parameter, and the values of the relaxation barrier Ueff and the preexponential factor τ0.

W-shaped 1,3-di(2,4-dicarboxyphenyl)benzene based lanthanide coordination polymers with tunable white light emission

A series of trinuclear LnCPs with unprecedented (3,8)-connected 3D (4.5²)₂(4².5¹².6⁶.7⁵.8³) architectures were synthesized. White light emission was realized by the Eu(iii)-doped Dy(iii) complexes.
