"Aggregation induced phosphorescence" active "rollover" iridium(III) complex as a multi-stimuli-responsive luminescence material

Aggregation-Induced Emission Phosphorescence Featured Au-Ag Coordination Polymer with a Diphosphine N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligand for Highly Sensitive Detection of Cr(VI)

Luminescent materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics have been recognized as highly selective and sensitive probes for the detection of toxic metal ions in recent years. In this paper, a Au-Ag cluster-based coordination polymer [Au3Ag3(L)2(CN)6(H2O)2]n [1, L = 1,3-bis((diphenylphosphanyl)methyl)-4,5-dihydro-imidazolylidene] was prepared by in situ generation of the diphosphine N-heterocyclic carbene (PCNHCP)-type ligand L in the presence of the corresponding metal salts. Compound 1 exhibited 530 nm phosphorescence under 380 nm excitation with a QY of 6.30% and a lifetime (τ) of 7.14 μs in the solid state. 1 showed good AIE behavior in the mixture of MeOH/H2O while the best aggregation state (fwater = 90%, QY = 6.79%, τ = 6.70 μs) exhibited selective and sensitive emission quenching toward Cr(VI) ions. Ultralow detection limits of 9.7 ppb (w/w) for Cr2O72- and 17.9 ppb (w/w) for CrO42- were achieved.

Theoretical Investigation of Iridium Complex with Aggregation-Induced Emission Properties

The mechanism of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) for the bis(1-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-1H-pyrazole)(2-(20-hydroxyphenyl)-2-oxazoline)iridium(III) complex, denoted as Ir(dfppz)2(oz), was investigated with use DFT and the TD-DFT level of theory. The mechanism of radiationless deactivation of the triplet state was elucidated. Such a mechanism requires an additional, photophysical triplet channel of the internal conversion (IC) type, which is activated as a result of intramolecular motion deforming the structure of the oz ligand and distorting the iridium coordination sphere. Formally, the rotational movement of the oxazoline relative to the C-C bond in the oz ligand is the main active coordinate that leads to the opening of the triplet channel. The rotation of the oxazoline group and the elongation of the Ir-Nox bond cause a transition between the luminescent, low-lying triplet state with a d/π→π* characteristic (T1(eq)), and the radiationless d→d triplet state (T1(Ir)). This transition is made possible by the low energy barrier, which, based on calculations, was estimated at approximately 8.5 kcal/mol. Dimerization, or generally aggregation of the complex molecules, blocks the intramolecular movement in the ligand and is responsible for a strong increase in the energy barrier for the T1(eq)⇝T1(Ir) conversion of triplet states. Thus, the aggregation phenomenon blocks the nonradiative deactivation channel of the excited states and, consequently, contributes to directing the photophysical process toward phosphorescence. The mechanism involved in locking the nonradiative triplet path can be called restricted access to singlet-triplet crossing (RASTC).

As Fiber Meets with AIE: Opening a Wonderland for Smart Flexible Materials

Aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) have recently been developed at a tremendous pace in the area of organic luminescent materials by virtue of their superior properties. However, the practical applications of AIEgens still face the challenge of transforming AIEgens from molecules into materials. Till now, many AIEgens have been integrated into fiber, endowing the fiber with prominent fluorescence and/or photosensitizing capacities. AIEgens and fiber complement each other for making progress in flexible smart materials, in which the utilization of AIEgens creates new application possibilities for fiber, and the fiber provides an excellent carrier for AIEgens towards realizing the conversion from molecule to materials and an ideal platform to research the aggregate state of AIEgens in mesoscale and macroscale. This review begins with a brief summary of the recent advances related to some typical AIEgens with various functions and the technology for the fabrication of AIEgen-functionalized fiber. The most representative applications are then highlighted by focusing on energy conversion, personal protective equipment, biomedical, sensor, and fluorescence-related fields. Finally, the challenges, opportunities, and tendencies in future development are discussed in detail. This review hopes to inspire innovation in AIEgens and fiber from the view of mesoscale and macroscale.

Classical vs. Non-Classical Cyclometalated Pt(II) Complexes

Rollover cyclometalated complexes constitute a family of derivatives which differ from classical cyclometalated species in certain aspects. Various potential application fields have been developed for both classes of compounds, which have both similarities and differences. In order to uncover the relationships and distinctions between these two families of compounds, four Pt(II) cyclometalated complexes derived from 2-phenylpyridine (ppy) and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), assumed as prototypical ligands, were compared. For this study, an electron rich isostructural and isoelectronic pair of compounds, [Pt(N^C)Me(PPh3)], and an electron-poorer compound, [Pt(N^C)Cl(PPh3)] were chosen (N^C = ppy or bpy). DFT calculations, cyclic voltammetry, and UV-Vis spectra also helped to shed light into these species. Due to the presence of the more electronegative nitrogen in place of a C-H group, the rollover bpy-H ligand becomes a slightly weaker donor than the classical ppy-H ligand, and hence, generates (slightly) more stable cyclometalated complexes, lower energy frontier molecular orbitals, and electron-poorer platinum centers. On the whole, it was revealed that classical and rollover complexes have overall structural similarity, which contrasts to their somewhat different chemical behavior.

Multi-stimuli distinct responsive D–A based fluorogen oligomeric tool and efficient detection of TNT vapor

P1 shows distinct emission responses with multi-stimuli, i.e., quenching for TNT sensing, red shifting for acid and base vapors, blue shifting against MFC behavior, and solvent polarity-dependent emission.

'Aggregation-Induced Emission' Active Mono-Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complex Mediated Efficient Vapor-Phase Detection of Dichloromethane

Selective vapor-phase detection of dichloromethane (DCM) is a challenge, it being a well-known hazardous volatile organic solvent in trace amounts. With this in mind, we have developed an 'Aggregation-induced Emission' (AIE) active mono-cyclometalated iridium(III)-based (M1) probe molecule, which detects DCM sensitively and selectively in vapor phase with a response time <30 s. It reveals a turn-on emission (non-emissive to intense yellow) on exposing DCM vapor directly to the solid M1. The recorded detection limit is 4.9 ppm for DCM vapor with pristine M1. The mechanism of DCM detection was explored. Moreover, the detection of DCM vapor by M1 was extended with a low-cost filter paper as the substrate. The DCM is weakly bound with the probe and can be removed with a mild treatment, so, notably, the probe can be reused.

Syntheses and structure of dinuclear metal complexes containing naphthyl-Ir bichromophore

A series of novel metal complexes were synthesized containing an Ir-cyclometalated bichromophore as a visible-light sensitizer. A new bichromophoric unit containing a naphthyl substituent and methyl substituents on the 2-phenylpyridine chelating ligand was synthesized and characterized for the first time. According to the increased crystallinity of the bichromophoric unit, novel Ir-M metal complexes (M = Pd, Mn, and Ir) were synthesized and fully characterized. The novel Ir-Pd complex maintained photocatalytic activity toward styrenes under visible-light irradiation, and polymerization with p-chlorostyrene, copolymerization with styrene and p-chlorostyrene furnished corresponding polymers.

Stimuli-Responsive AIEgens

The unique advantages and the exciting application prospects of AIEgens have triggered booming developments in this area in recent years. Among them, stimuli-responsive AIEgens have received particular attention and impressive progress, and they have been demonstrated to show tremendous potential in many fields from physical chemistry to materials science and to biology and medicine. Here, the recent achievements of stimuli-responsive AIEgens in terms of seven most representative types of stimuli including force, light, polarity, temperature, electricity, ion, and pH, are summarized. Based on typical examples, it is illustrated how each type of systems realize the desired stimuli-responsive performance for various applications. The key work principles behind them are ultimately deciphered and figured out to offer new insights and guidelines for the design and engineering of the next-generation stimuli-responsive luminescent materials for more broad applications.

Rollover Cyclometalation as a Valuable Tool for Regioselective C-H Bond Activation and Functionalization

Rollover cyclometalation constitutes a particular case of cyclometallation reaction. This reaction occurs when a chelated heterocyclic ligand loses its bidentate coordination mode and undergoes an internal rotation, after which a remote C-H bond is regioselectively activated, affording an uncommon cyclometalated complex, called "rollover cyclometalated complex". The key of the process is the internal rotation of the ligand, which occurs before the C-H bond activation and releases from coordination a donor atom. The new "rollover" ligand has peculiar properties, being a ligand with multiple personalities, no more a spectator in the reactivity of the complex. The main reason of this peculiarity is the presence of an uncoordinated donor atom (the one initially involved in the chelation), able to promote a series of reactions not available for classic cyclometalated complexes. The rollover reaction is highly regioselective, because the activated C-H bond is usually in a symmetric position with respect to the donor atom which detaches from the metal stating the rollover process. Due to this novel behavior, a series of potential applications have appeared in the literature, in fields such as catalysis, organic synthesis, and advanced materials.

A novel approach for rhodium(iii)-catalyzed C-H functionalization of 2,2'-bipyridine derivatives with alkynes: a significant substituent effect

We described a novel approach for the C-H functionalization of 2,2'-bipyridine derivatives with alkynes. DFT calculations and experimental data showed a significant substituent effect at the 6-position of 2,2'-bipyridine, which weakened the adjacent N-Rh bond and provided the possibility of subsequent rollover cyclometalation, C-H activation, and functionalization.

Formation of Iridium(III) Complexes via Selective Activation of the C-H and N-H Bonds of a Dipyridylpyrrole Ligand

Treatment of [Ir(PPh₃)₃Cl] with 2-[5-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-2-yl]pyridine (Hdpp) in refluxing toluene affords an unexpected pyrrole-metalated iridium(III) hydride complex, [Ir(K²_C,N-dpp)(H)(Cl)(PPh₃)₂] (1), via C_pyrrole-H activation, while the presence of the base KO^tBu as the deprotonation reagent produces a pyridine-metalated iridium(III) hydride complex, [Ir(K³_C,N,N-dpp)(H)(PPh₃)₂] (2), via C_pyridine-H activation. Treatment of [Ir(PPh₃)₃Cl] prepared by a convenient method with Hdpp in the presence of KO^tBu under the refluxing mixture solvent toluene/methanol (2:1, v/v) generates the N,N-chelating complex [Ir(K²_N,N-dpp)(H)(Cl)(PPh₃)₂] (3) together with 1 and the N,N-chelating dihydride complex [Ir(K²_N,N-dpp)(H)₂(PPh₃)₂] (4). Complex 4 is also readily produced by the reaction of [Ir(PPh₃)₃Cl] and Hdpp in the presence of KO^tBu under refluxing methanol or by the reaction of IrCl₃ and PPh₃ in refluxing 2-ethoxyethanol. Complexes 1-4 are fully characterized by NMR, IR, and UV-vis spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The dpp^-/dpp^2- ligand shows rich coordination capability, of which pyridine- and pyrrole-cyclometalated coordination modes are first reported. The formation of structural isomers 1 and 3 involved the selective activation of the C-H and N-H bonds of Hdpp is rationalized by theoretical calculations.

We reported a Rh(iii)-catalyzed switchable C–H functionalization of 2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine with internal alkynes, which provided diversiform functionalized N,N-bidentate chelating compounds.

Rhodium(III)-Catalyzed Regioselective C3-H Acylmethylation of [2,2'-Bipyridine]-6-carboxamides with Sulfoxonium Ylides

A rhodium(III)-catalyzed C-H acylmethylation of tridentate [2,2'-bipyridine]-6-carboxamides was developed. A variety of [2,2'-bipyridine]-6-carboxamides could be monoalkylated exclusively at the C3 position with sulfoxonium ylides as carbene precursors, giving 3-alkylated products in high yields. This protocol proceeds through a rollover cyclometalation pathway, has a broad range scope of substrates, and exhibits excellent functional group tolerance.

A water-soluble cyclometalated iridium(iii) complex for pH sensing based on aggregation-induced enhanced phosphorescence

The novel water-soluble monoanionic Ir(iii) complex Na[Ir(ppy)2(SB-COO)] (2; Hppy = phenylpyridine; HSB-COOH = 4-carboxylanilinesalicylaldehyde Schiff base), which was obtained by the reaction of the novel Ir(iii) complex [Ir(ppy)2(SB-COOH)] (1) with NaOEt, in its aqueous solution, showed hydrogen ion (H+)-responsive aggregation-induced enhanced phosphorescence (AIEP). Both these complexes exhibited very weak and relatively strong emissions in solution and solid states, respectively. The pH-responsiveness of 2 was evaluated from its emission spectra in aqueous solution in the pH range of 8.7-1.8. Above pH 6, 2 showed weak emission with a maximum at 508 nm. Upon decreasing the pH to 4.7, AIEP with a bathochromic shift to 618 nm was induced by the aggregation of 1, whereby the intensity at 618 nm was increased approximately by 50-fold compared to that at pH 6.0. This enhancement is due to restrictions of the geometrical changes in the six-membered chelate ring of the ancillary ligand (Ir-N-C-C-C-O-) and of the intramolecular rotations in the excited state. The enhanced luminescence originates from spin-forbidden metal-to-ligand-ligand charge transfer (3MLLCT). Below pH 2.8, the emission intensity decreased owing to the decrease in the population of the emissive complex 1 upon dissociation of the ancillary ligand from the Ir(ppy)2 unit.

A remarkable phosphorescent sensor for acid–base vapours based on an AIPE-active Ir(iii) complex

Emissive Iridium(III) Complexes with Phosphorous-Containing Ancillary

Ir(III) metal complexes and related emitters bearing all kind of cyclometalated chromophoric chelates and non-chromophoric ancillary are extensively studied during the past three decades. Many of them have been found to display bright room temperature phosphorescence from triplet excited states in both solution and solid states, offering a possible application in contemporary optoelectronic technologies, including organic light emitting diodes, electrochemiluminescence, biological imaging and chemical sensing. Among reported materials, there are Ir(III) complexes with at least one phosphorus (P)-containing ligand and/or ancillary chelate, together with cyclometalates or equivalents that are in control of the actual emission energy. Particularly, possession of P-based donor can lead to divergent structural and photophysical properties compared to the traditional designs. This review aims to provide a literature overview as well as the authors' personal account to the development of relevant Ir(III) based phosphors bearing these P-donors. To the readers' convenience, the contents are subdivided into six sessions, according to whether or not they are charge natural, or with mono- or dianionic electronic character, and in accordance to their divergent bonding modes, i. e. monodentate, bidentate and tripodal coordination. In many cases, the P-based ancillaries offer an easy accessible route to the formation of efficient sky-blue and true-blue emitters due to their π-accepting property, together with enlarged emission energy gap and destabilized upper lying quenching state.

Palladium-Catalyzed Site-Selective C-H Arylation of 2,2'-Bipyridine-6-carboxamides via a Rollover Cyclometalation Pathway

The first example of Pd(II)-catalyzed arylation of 2,2'-bipyridine-6-carboxamides via a rollover cyclometalation pathway is reported. A diverse range of (hetero)aryl iodides could be directly coupled with various 2,2'-bipyridine-6-carboxamides in exclusive site-selectivity, which offers a distinct entry to arylated 2,2'-bipyridine-6-carboxamides. A preliminary mechanistic study supports the Pd(II)-rollover cyclometalation pathway.

C-H addition reactivity of 2-phenylpyridine and 2,2'-bipyridine with pentaphenylborole

The reactions of pentaphenylborole with pyridines with a pendent aryl group in the 2-position, specifically 2-phenylpyridine and 2,2'-bipyridine, readily afforded adducts. Upon thermolysis, the adducts converted to ortho C-H addition products with the two substituents introduced onto the diene on the boracyclic carbon atoms adjacent to boron in a syn fashion. Photolysis of the syn 2-phenypyridine product led to isomerization to the anti conformer which did not readily occur for the 2,2'-bipyridine complex. Such C-H bond reactivity is uncommon for main group elements and provides insight into methodologies to access boron frameworks.

Palladium-Catalyzed Directed Halogenation of Bipyridine N-Oxides

The palladium-catalyzed directed C-H halogenation of bipyridine N-oxides was investigated. Using NCS or NBS (N-chloro- or N-bromosuccinimide) and 5 mol % Pd(OAc)₂ in chlorobenzene (0.10 molar) at 110 °C, pyridine-directed functionalization took place and 3-chloro- or 3-bromobipyridine N-oxides were obtained in high yields. The reaction is sensitive to steric hindrance by 4- and 6'-substituents. Only in the latter case, where coordination of palladium by the pyridine is hindered, 3'-halogenation directed by the N-oxide function was observed. The halogenated products were deoxygenated by PCl₃ or PBr₃.

From blue to full color – theoretical design and characterization of a series of Ir(iii) complexes containing azoline ligand with potential application in OLEDs

Based on bisthienylethene BrLH, [Ir(dfppy)₂(BrL)]·3CH₃OH (1) and [Pt(dfppy)(BrL)]·CH₃OH (2) have been prepared. The two complexes are significantly different in structure, luminescence and photochromic behavior, due to their different metal centers.

Two bisthienylethene–Ir(iii) complexes showing acid/base-induced structural transformation and on–off luminescence switching in solution

Compounds [Ir(dfppy)₂(pbdtiH)](PF₆)·2CHCl₃ (1-H) and [Ir(dfppy)₂(pbdti)] (1) were synthesized based on bisthienylethene pbdtiH, showing NEt₃/TFA-induced structural transformation and on–off luminescence switching.
