Supramolecular assemblies derived from methyl-substituted cucurbit[5]uril and lanthanide nitrates

Interaction of the lanthanide nitrates M(NO3)3 (M = Gd, Eu) with methylcucurbit[5]uril (Me10Q[5]) in the presence of transition metal chlorides (ZnCl2 and FeCl3) in acidic media resulted in the isolation of the complexes [Me10Q[5]Gd(H2O)2Cl Gd(H2O)6](ZnCl4)2∙Cl∙8.9H2O (1) and [Me10Q[5]Eu(H2O)3Cl(H3O)](FeCl4)3 (2). The molecular structures of 1 and 2 have been determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography, and reveal discrete complexes which are involved in dense stacking with adjacent Me10Q[5]s linked via H-bonding and/or metal anions resulting in a supramolecular assembly.

Theoretical Study of Effects of Solvents, Ligands, and Anions on Separation of Trivalent Lanthanides and Actinides

Due to its associated low CO₂ emissions, nuclear energy production is rapidly growing. In this context, the treatment of high-level liquid waste (HLLW) of nuclear plants is of high concern to both scientific and industrial communities. Specifically, the separation of An(III) and Ln(III) cations when processing nuclear fuel is a vitally important, yet challenging, step within HLLW because An(III) and Ln(III) have similar chemical properties in solution. To guide the choice of relevant ligands, anions, and solvents for this separation step, in this work, we calculate and compare the free energy of formation of different Am(III) and Eu(III) complexes (which are typical and important An(III) and Ln(III) cation examples), involving two different ligands and three different counter ions in four different solvents. Based on our calculations, we predict that the chosen solvent is a key factor in the extraction of Am(III) and Eu(III) in treatment of HLLW. This study supports a systematic, computation-assisted screening of solvents and extractive ligands with counter anions as a proficient method to optimize the separation of Ln(III) and An(III).

Thorium decorporation efficacy of rationally-selected biocompatible compounds with relevance to human application

During civil, nuclear or defense activities, internal contamination of actinides in humans and mitigation of their toxic impacts are of serious concern. Considering the health hazards of thorium (Th) internalization, an attempt was made to examine the potential of ten rationally-selected compounds/formulations to decorporate Th ions from physiological systems. The Th-induced hemolysis assay with human erythrocytes revealed good potential of tiron, silibin (SLB), phytic acid (PA) and Liv.52^® (L52) for Th decorporation, in comparison to diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid, an FDA-approved decorporation drug. This was further validated by decorporation experiments with relevant human cell models (erythrocytes and liver cells) and biological fluid (blood) under pre-/post-treatment conditions, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, density functional theory-based calculations and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy confirmed the formation of Th complex by these agents. Amongst the chosen biocompatible agents, tiron, SLB, PA and L52 hold promise to enhance Th decorporation for human application.

Complexation of U(VI) with Cucurbit[5]uril: Thermodynamic and Structural investigation in aqueous medium

The assessment of cucurbituril (CBn) for selective removal of actinides from nuclear waste streams requires comprehensive understanding of binding parameters and coordination of these complexes. The present work is the first experimental report on complexation of actinide ion with Cucurbit[5]uril (CB5) in solution. The thermodynamic parameters (ΔG, ΔH and ΔS) for complexation of CB5 with U(VI) in formic acid water medium were determined using microcalorimetry and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The enthalpy and entropy of complexation revealed the partial binding of U(VI) to CB5 portal. The partial binding was confirmed by spectroscopic techniques viz. extended X absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS), ¹H and ¹³C NMR. The EXAFS χ(r) versus r spectra for U-CB5 complex has been fitted from 1.4 to 3.5 Å with two oxygen shells and a carbon shell. The presence of three carbon atom in secondary shell shows the involvement of only three carbonyl oxygens directly bonding to U(VI) which is in contrast to that calculated from gas phase DFT calculation of unhydrated system. The combined effect of hydration and formic acid encapsulation led to the enhanced stability of partially bound U(VI) to CB5. In the present work the binding of formic acid has also been studied by fluorescence spectroscopy. ESI-MS data shows the unusual stabilization of U(VI) by CB5 in gas phase.
