Abstract
Metal ions such as Co2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+ have extensive applications in biological and industrial realms, but the toxicity caused by these ions poses a serious threat to mankind. However, there is no report in the literature on the development of a chemosensor for distinguishable detection of these toxic ions. Addressing this challenge, a multifunctional probe as a basic pH indicator with both colorimetric and fluorescence turn-on responses has been reported. The probe selectively discriminates Co2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions with brown, dark yellow and greenish yellow colors, respectively, in DMF : water (9 : 1 v/v, HEPES 10 mM). Additionally, a fluorescence turn-on response specific to Zn2+ has also been observed. The sensing mechanism has been explored using UV-Vis, fluorescence spectroscopy and 1H NMR titration and confirmed with computational results. The inhibition of CN isomerization and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) along with chelation enhanced fluorescence emission (CHEF) result in fluorescence enhancement with Zn2+. Job's plot and HRMS spectra confirm a 1 : 1 (L : M) stoichiometry between the probe and metal ions. The probe is able to exhibit excellent viscochromism in DMF : glycerol medium. Live cell imaging on SiHa cells has been successfully performed for intra-cellular detection of Zn2+ at basic pH. Furthermore, the probe displays its utility in mitotracking and monitoring cytoplasmic viscosity changes in SiHa cells. It is efficiently used to recognize the apoptosis process by displaying an enhancement in fluorescence intensity from cancerous SiHa cells to apoptotic cells.

Abstract
A new chemosensor 1 was synthesized by reacting rhodamine B hydrazide and 2,3,4-trihydroxybenzaldehyde, which was then characterized by spectroscopic techniques and single crystal X-ray crystallography. Sensor 1 has the ability to sense Co2+/Cu2+ ions by "naked-eye" with an apparent colour change from colourless to pink in different solvent system, MeCN and DMF respectively. Furthermore, it can selectively detect Co2+/Cu2+ among wide range of different metal ions, and it exhibits low detection limit of 4.425 × 10-8 M and 1.398 × 10-7 M respectively. Binding mode of the two complexes were determined to be 1:1 stoichiometry for Co2+ complex and 1:2 stoichiometry for Cu2+ complex through Job's plot, IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Moreover, reversibility of the sensor 1 as copper (II) ion detector was determined by using EDTA and the results showed that sensor 1 can be reused for at least 6 cycles. Other than that, a low cost chemosensor test strips were fabricated for the convenient "naked-eye" detection of Co2+ and Cu2+ in pure aqueous media. The MTT assay was conducted in order to determine the cytotoxicity of sensor 1 towards human cell lines.

Abstract
A julolidine-based boron-phenylpyrrin small molecule has been designed and synthesized through a one-pot condensation-complexation procedure. Systematic optical studies show that this compound displays two distinct optical responses to the addition of HCl and Fe[Formula: see text] in succession: the addition of HCl induces an obvious red shift in its maximum absorption and fluorescence emission bands accompanied with the fluorescence quenching, whereas after synchronously adding H[Formula: see text] and Fe[Formula: see text], the maximum absorption and fluorescence emission wavelength were found to shift little but with an obvious decrease in the absorbance and fluorescence intensity, suggesting the dual-detecting nature of this compound to H[Formula: see text] and Fe[Formula: see text] under acid conditions. More interestingly, based on the HCl/Fe[Formula: see text]-mediated absorption and fluorescence signal features, JBPP can function as AND, NAND, INH and IMP logic gates which can be further developed into a 2:4 digital demultiplexer These will endow this small molecule compound with great potential for applications in molecular logic material, chemosensors and biological fields.

Abstract
Synthesis of terpyridyl based ligands 3-([2,2':6',2''-terpyridin]-4'-yl)-7-methoxy-2-(methylthio)-quinolone, (L1); 3-([2,2':6',2''-terpyridin]-4'-yl)-6-methoxyquinolin-2(1H)-one, (L2); 3-([2,2'-:6',2''-terpyridin]-4'-yl)-6-methylquinolin-2(1H)-one (L3) and cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes [[Ir(ppy)2L1]+PF6- (1), [Ir(ppy)2L2]+PF6- (2), [Ir(ppy)2L3]+PF6- (3) (2-phenylpyridine = Hppy)] involving these ligands has been described. The ligands L1-L3 and complexes 1-3 have been thoroughly characterized by elemental analyses, spectral studies (IR, 1H, 13C NMR, UV/vis and fluorescence) ESI-MS, and the structure of 3 has been unambiguously authenticated by single crystal X-ray analyses. UV/vis, fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopic studies showed rather efficient binding of 1 with CT-DNA (calf thymus DNA) and BSA (bovine serum albumin) relative to 2 and 3. Molecular docking studies unveiled binding of 1-3 with minor groove of CT-DNA via van der Waal's forces and electrostatically with the hydrophobic moiety of HSA (human serum albumin). The ligands and complexes exhibited moderate cytotoxicity towards MDA-MB-231 (breast cancer cell line) and significant influence on HeLa (cervical cancer cell line) cells. Cytotoxicity, morphological changes, and apoptosis have been followed by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromide) assay, Hoechst 33342/PI (PI = propidium iodide) staining, cell cycle analysis by FACS (fluorescence activated cell sorting), and ROS (reactive oxygen species) generation by DCFH-DA (dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate) dye. Confocal microscopy images revealed that the drug efficiently initiates apoptosis in the cell cytosol. The IC50 values showed superior cytotoxicity of 1-3 against the HeLa cell line relative to cisplatin, and their ability to induce apoptosis is in the order 1 > 2 > 3.

Abstract
A series of new benzimidazole containing compounds 2-((1-R-1-H-benzimidazol-2-yl)phenyl-imino)naphthol HL(1-3) (R = methyl, ethyl or propyl, respectively) have been synthesized by Schiff base condensation of 2-(1-R-1-H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)aniline and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde. The reactions of HL(1-3) with Cu(NO3)2·2.5H2O led to the corresponding copper(II) complexes [Cu(L)(NO3)] 1-3. All the compounds were characterized by conventional analytical techniques and, for 1 and 3, also by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The interactions of complexes 1-3 with calf thymus DNA were studied by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques and the calculated binding constants (K(b)) are in the range of 3.5 × 10(5) M(-1)-3.2 × 10(5) M(-1). Complexes 1-3 effectively bind DNA through an intercalative mode, as proved by molecular docking studies. The binding affinity of the complexes decreases with the size increase of the N-alkyl substituent, in the order of 1 > 2 > 3, which is also in accord with the calculated LUMO(complex) energies. They show substantial in vitro cytotoxic effect against human lung (A-549), breast (MDA-MB-231) and cervical (HeLa) cancer cell lines. Complex 1 exhibits a significant inhibitory effect on the proliferation of the A-549 cancer cells. The antiproliferative efficacy of 1 has also been analysed by a DNA fragmentation assay, fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS) and nuclear morphology using a fluorescence microscope. The possible mode for the apoptosis pathway of 1 has also been evaluated by a reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation study.
