An integrated microspectrometer for localised multiplexing measurements

Rapid detection of sulfamethoxazole in plasma and food samples with in-syringe membrane SPE coupled with solid-phase fluorescence spectrometry

In this work, in-syringe membrane solid-phase extraction (MSPE) device was fabricated for the on-site sampling of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in food samples followed by solid-phase fluorescence spectra analysis. The samples and fluorescamine (FA) were added to a syringe for derivation. Then, the derivative of SMX was extracted by a membrane in the syringe SPE device. Subsequently, the derivative on the membrane was measured immediately without additional elution procedure. The method was successfully applied in plasma, milk, and egg samples for the trace SMX detection, with the recovery of 98%-102%, RSDs from 1% to 6%. Compared with liquid chromatography, direct detection of the concentrated analyte significantly improved the sensitivity. Moreover, fluorescamine made it unnecessary to separate SMX from the interference. Consequently, it was a time-saving, low-cost, and easy-operation method, which demonstrated the potential of in-syringe SPE as a promising candidate for on-site analysis.

A dynamic strategy for wavelength sensing using the diffracted orders of a grating

We propose a strategy for real time multicolour detection of light emitting particles under flow conditions, using the diffracted orders of a grating. The method relies on the fact that the spatial (angular/linear) separation between the orders of a diffraction grating is a wavelength dependent quantity. Thus, the difference in arrival times at a fixed detector for neighbouring orders produced by a moving, light-emitting particle can be used as a wavelength sensing mechanism. We demonstrate this functionality using a prototype PDMS microfluidic device that incorporates a focusing transmission grating. A key attribute of this approach is that it requires only a single sensitive detector, such as a photomultiplier tube, in contrast to many conventional approaches which require multiple sensitive detectors or a detector array.

All-polymer arrayed waveguide grating at 850 nm: design, fabrication, and characterization

In this Letter, a novel all-polymer arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) device with an operating wavelength around 850 nm is reported. The all-polymer AWG consists of polymer ridge waveguides fabricated on a thin poly(methyl methacrylate) foil via microscope projection photolithography. The developed device is suitable to be integrated into optical circuits, e.g., a planar polymer foil and, along with other optical integrated devices, to be used for different sensing applications. The functionality of the device is demonstrated by using a fiber Bragg grating sensor and performing strain measurements.

Multi-Pixel Photon Counters for Optofluidic Characterization of Particles and Microalgae

We have developed an optofluidic biosensor to study microscale particles and different species of microalgae. The system is comprised of a microchannel with a set of chevron-shaped grooves. The chevrons allows for hydrodynamic focusing of the core stream in the center using a sheath fluid. The device is equipped with a new generation of highly sensitive photodetectors, multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC), with high gain values and an extremely small footprint. Two different sizes of high intensity fluorescent microspheres and three different species of algae (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii strain 21 gr, Chlamydomonas suppressor, and Chlorella sorokiniana) were studied. The forward scattering emissions generated by samples passing through the interrogation region were carried through a multimode fiber, located in 135 degree with respect to the excitation fiber, and detected by a MPPC. The signal outputs obtained from each sample were collected using a data acquisition system and utilized for further statistical analysis. Larger particles or cells demonstrated larger peak height and width, and consequently larger peak area. The average signal output (integral of the peak) for Chlamydomonas reinhardtii strain 21 gr, Chlamydomonas suppressor, and Chlorella sorokiniana falls between the values found for the 3.2 and 10.2 μm beads. Different types of algae were also successfully characterized.
