Abstract
Novel conjugates consist of 4-styrylpyridinium dye and 2,2-diphenyl-2H-chromene moiety were obtained, and their affinity to double stranded DNA and cucurbit[7]uril was investigated. With a combination of absorption, fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopies as well as MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, we demonstrate that these compounds can interact with macromolecules to form of the supramolecular assemblies due to two suitable binding sites. The ternary complex is formed as a result of the intercalation of a positively charged styryl part between DNA base pairs, while cucurbit[7]uril is located on the alkyl chain between two moieties of conjugate. All these findings provide valuable information into controlling the interaction between organic molecules, DNA and cucurbit[7]uril.

Abstract
Understanding and controlling the reversible isomerization of photoactive molecules in order to obtain a tunable optical response is desirable for many photofunctional applications. This study describes the interesting effects of an anionic cyclodextrin host (sulfated-βCD, SCD) on the photoisomerization and protonation equilibrium of an important hemicyanine dye (trans-4-[4-(dimethylamino)styryl]-1-methylpyridinium iodide, DSP). The SCD host assists in unlocking the photoisomerization potential of DSP by promoting protonation of the dye. It also assists in stabilizing the cis isomer of the protonated dye, thereby significantly delaying the reverse cis to trans isomerization of DSPH+. Furthermore, the interplay of both hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions in the complex formation of SCD with DSPH+ makes the reverse cis to trans isomerization of DSPH+ amenable to influence by the added salt. The stimuli-responsive reversible isomerization of SCD-DSPH+ is an interesting case from the perspective of chemical sensing or light operated functional materials with host-guest systems.

Abstract
A simple and efficient method for the synthesis of dialdehyde aniline in good yields (up to 83%) is explored using Cu(OTf)2 as the catalyst, Selectfluor as the radical initiator, and DMSO as both the carbon and oxygen sources. Experimental studies indicate that the reaction is achieved by the formylation of two CAr-H bonds, first at the para-position and then at the ortho-position. A possible mechanism is proposed, including the thermal homolysis of Selectfluor, the Cu(II)-facilitated formylation of the CAr-H bonds, and the hydrolysis of the amide under alkaline conditions in air atmosphere.

Abstract
During the past ten years, the importance of cucurbiturils (CB[n]) as macrocyclic hosts in supramolecular assemblies with various types of natural and synthetic nucleic acids (NAs) has increased explosively. As a component of such systems, CB[n] macrocycles can play a wide spectrum of roles from drug and gene delivery vehicles to catalysts/inhibitors of biochemical reactions and even building blocks for NA-based materials. The aim of this highlight article is to describe the development of the CB[n] applications in nucleic acids research and to outline the current situation and perspectives of this fascinating synergistic combination of supramolecular chemistry of CB[n] and NAs.

Abstract
In order to explore how cucurbituril hosts accommodate an N-phenyl-pyridinium derivative guest, the complexation of the solvatochromic dye, 4-(4-(dimethylamino)styryl)-1-phenylpyridinium iodide (PhSt) with ,',δ,δ'-tetramethyl-cucurbit[6]uril (Me4CB6) and cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) was investigated by absorption spectroscopic, fluorescence and NMR experiments. In aqueous solutions, PhSt forms 1:1 complexes with both cucurbiturils, the complex with CB7 has a higher stability constant (Ka = 6.0 × 106 M-1) than the complex with Me4CB6 (Ka = 1.1 × 106 M-1). As revealed by NMR experiments and confirmed by theoretical calculations, CB7 encapsulates the whole phenylpyridinium entity of the PhSt cation guest, whereas the cavity of Me4CB6 includes only the phenyl ring, the pyridinium ring is bound to the carbonyl rim of the host. The binding of PhSt to cucurbiturils is accompanied by a strong enhancement of the fluorescence quantum yield due to the blocking of the deactivation through a twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state. The TICT mechanism in PhSt was characterized by fluorescence experiments in polyethylene glycol (PEG) solvents of different viscosities. The PhSt-CB7 system was tested as a fluorescence indicator displacement (FID) assay, and it recognized trimethyl-lysine selectively over other lysine derivatives.

Abstract
The design of small organic molecules with a predictable and desirable DNA-binding mechanism is a topical research task for biomedicine application. Herein, we demonstrate an attractive supramolecular strategy for controlling the non-covalent ligand-DNA interaction by binding with cucurbituril as a synthetic receptor. With a combination of UV/vis, CD and NMR experiments, we demonstrate that the bis-styryl dye with two suitable binding sites can involve double stranded DNA and cucurbituril in the formation of the supramolecular triad. The ternary assembly is formed as a result of the interaction of macrocyclic cucurbituril with one pyridinium fragment of the bis-styryl dye, while the second pyridinium fragment of the dye is effectively associated with DNA backbones, which leads to a change in the ligand-DNA binding mode from aggregation to a minor groove. This exciting outcome was supported by molecular docking studies that help to understand the molecular orientation of the supramolecular triad and elucidate the destruction of dye aggregates caused by cucurbituril. These studies provide valuable information on the mechanisms of DNA binding to small molecules and recognition processes in bioorganic supramolecular assemblies constructed from multiple non-covalent interactions.

Abstract
A simple three component array of host-fluorophore complexes is capable of sensitive and selective discrimination of heavy metal ions, including lanthanide and actinide salts in aqueous solution. Instead of applying optical sensors that only use "single-mode" detection, i.e., coordination of the metal to a specific ligand and monitoring the change in emission of an appended fluorophore, we exploit a series of host-fluorophore complexes that are affected by the presence of small amounts of metal ions in aqueous solution in different ways. Variable host-metal and host-guest-metal interactions lead to both turn-on and turn-off fluorescence sensing mechanisms, enhancing the discriminatory properties of the array. The limit of detection for certain metals is as low as 70 nM, and highly similar metals such as lanthanides and actinides can be easily distinguished at low micromolar concentrations in complex salt mixtures.
