Abstract
This study presents a new approach to designing a lithocholic acid functionalized oligomer (OLithocholicAA-X) that can be used as a drug carrier with additional, beneficial activity. Namely, this novel oligomer can incorporate an anti-cancer drug due to the application of an effective backbone as its component (lithocholic acid) alone is known to have anticancer activity. The oligomer was synthesized and characterized in detail by nuclear magnetic resonance, attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, thermal analysis, and mass spectrometry analysis. We selected lipid rafts as potential drug carrier-membrane binding sites. In this respect, we investigated the effects of OLithocholicAA-X on model lipid raft of normal and altered composition, containing an increased amount of cholesterol (Chol) or sphingomyelin (SM), using Langmuir monolayers and liposomes. The surface topography of the studied monolayers was additionally investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The obtained results showed that the investigated oligomer has affinity for a system that mimics a normal lipid raft (SM:Chol 2:1). On the other hand, for systems with an excess of SM or Chol, thermodynamically unfavorable fluidization of the films occurs. Moreover, AFM topographies showed that the amount of SM determines the bioavailability of the oligomer, causing fragmentation of its lattice.

Abstract
Purpose Efficient intracellular delivery of a therapeutic compound is an important feature of smart drug delivery systems (SDDS). Modification of a carrier structure with a cell-penetrating ligand, ie, cholesterol moiety, is a strategy to improve cellular uptake. Cholesterol end-capped poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)s offer a promising foundation for the design of efficient thermoresponsive drug delivery systems. Methods A series of cholesterol end-capped poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)s (PNIPAAm) with number-average molar masses ranging from 3200 to 11000 g·mol–1 were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization from original xanthate-functionalized cholesterol and self-assembled into micelles. The physicochemical characteristics and cytotoxicity of cholesterol end-capped poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)s have been thoroughly investigated. Results Phase transition temperature dependence on the molecular weight and hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratio in the polymers were observed in water. Biological test results showed that the obtained materials, both in disordered and micellar form, are non-hemolytic, highly compatible with fibroblasts, and toxic to glioblastoma cells. It was found that the polymer termini dictates the mode of action of the system. Conclusion The cholesteryl moiety acts as a cell-penetrating agent, which enables disruption of the plasma membrane and in effect leads to the restriction of the tumor growth. Cholesterol end-capped PNIPAAm showing in vitro anticancer efficacy can be developed not only as drug carriers but also as components of combined/synergistic therapy.

Abstract
Although nanoparticles of heavy metal xanthates and their hydrosols can play important roles in froth flotation, environmental issues, analytics, and manufacturing of metal sulfide nanocomposites, they have received little attention. We studied colloidal solutions and immobilized particles prepared via interaction of aqueous lead nitrate with alkyl xanthates applying UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential measurement, thermogravimetry analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman scattering, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The hydrodynamic diameter of colloidal particles of Pb(SSCOR)2 decreased from 500 to 50 nm with an increase in the alkyl radical length and the initial xanthate to lead ratio (X/Pb); the zeta potential magnitude varied similarly, although it remained negative. The effect of pH in the range of 4.5-11 was minor, but the colloids produced using excess of Pb2+ in alkaline media were close to PbX and decomposed much easier than PbX2. The uptake of lead xanthates on supports was generally low because of negative charges of the colloids; however, 50-100 nm thick PbX2 films were deposited on PbS and SiO2 from the media of X/Pb < 2 and pH < 9 because of preadsorption of Pb2+, while nanorods formed on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite.

Abstract
The electronic properties of the coordination complex nickel (II) bis-n-propylxanthate, Ni(CH3(CH2)2OC(S)S)2, were studied by a combination of complementary experimental (both laboratory and synchrotron based techniques) and theoretical methods. Energy differences between HOMOs and LUMOs were determined from UV-visible spectroscopy. The assignment of the transitions were performed with the aid of TD-DFT calculations and based in symmetry considerations. The analysis of the Raman excitation profiles of selected vibrational modes of the complex, taken in resonance with a particular electronic transition, was found to reinforce the electronic assignment. Experimental binding energies of inner and core electrons were determined by PES measurements. Ni K-edge, S K-edge, Ni L-edge, O K-edge and C K-edge XANES spectra were interpreted in terms of the promotion of core electrons to unoccupied electronic levels. An experimental quantitative molecular orbital diagram was constructed using the information extracted from the different techniques.

Abstract
ROC(S)SC(O)OCH2CH3, with R=CH3-, (CH3)2CH- and CH3(CH2)2-, were obtained through the reaction between potassium xanthate salts, ROC(S)SK, and ethyl chloroformate, ClC(O)OCH2CH3. The liquid compounds were identified and characterized by (1)H and (13)C NMR and mass spectrometry. The conformations adopted by the molecules were studied by DFT methods. 6 conformers were theoretically predicted for R=CH3- and (CH3)2CH-, while the conformational flexibility of the n-propyl substituent increases the total number of feasible rotamers to 21. For the three molecules, the conformers can be associated in 3 groups, being the most stable the AS forms - the C=S double bond anti (A) with respect to the C-S single bond and the S-C single bond syn (S) with respect to the C=O double bond - followed by AA and SS conformers. The vibrational spectra were interpreted in terms of the predicted conformational equilibrium, presenting the ν(C=O) spectral region signals corresponding to the three groups of conformers. A moderated pre-resonance Raman enhancement of the ν(C=S) vibrational mode of CH3(CH2)2OC(S)SC(O)OCH2CH3 was detected, when the excitation radiation approaches the energy of a n→π∗ electronic transition associated with the C=S chromophore. UV-visible spectra in different solvents were measured and interpreted in terms of TD-DFT calculations. The unknown molecule CH3CH2OC(O)SH was isolated by the UV-visible photolysis of CH3OC(S)SC(O)OCH2CH3 isolated in Ar matrix, and also obtained as a side-product of the reaction between potassium xanthate salts, ROC(S)SK, and ethyl chloroformate, ClC(O)OCH2CH3.
